New year, new book! I had front row seats to @banyanas' Day One Dark since it still went by its working title of 'Chasing Daybreak.' This one has been a work in progress for a while: I actually finished the text formatting last year, and then spent a few months figuring out the best way to incorporate some of the extra touches like the full color illustrated spread -- and now that the author copy has safely made it home, I'm finally ready to gush about it!
This is definitely a longer work, capping out at 200 pages exactly, but based on experience it wasn't long enough to warrant another attempt at a rounded back, so I kept with the flat back format. Given the subject matter, I aimed for a volcanic motif with the case and endpapers: the black bookcloth and cover papers with the partly-cooled magma look combined really well with the brighter magmatic colors of the flyleaves.
Overall I'm so happy with how this turned out, especially given the long hiatus from crafting. I'm so happy with how this one turned out, and I'm delighted that the author now has a copy to hold in their hands! ❤

Relief from the Tomb of Kemsit
Middle Kingdom, 11th Dynasty, ca. 2055-2004 BC. Painted limestone. Now in the British Museum. EA1450
Kemsit sits on a wide, low-backed chair holding a vase of scented ointment to her nose. In front of her was the smaller figure of a male servant, of which only his hand remains, holding a small cup that is receiving the stream of liquid he was pouring into it with his other hand.
This servant was obviously facing leftward, and since the inscription in front of him has its signs also facing left, we can be sure that the inscription belongs to the servant. Kemsit has short, curly hair. Her necklace is a broad collar with many strands and an outer row of drop-shaped pendants, and she wears cuff-shaped bracelets made of many strands of tiny beads held in place by a spacer bead.

La Mode nationale, no. 299, 16 janvier 1892, Paris. No. 2. — Bordure en dentelle irlandaise. Bibliothèque nationale de France
No. 2.
No. 2. — Irish lace border. In this border begins a series of lace stitches often found in old Venetian lace; we can therefore rightly call them Irish lace stitches. In these backgrounds, the assembly and superposition of the rows of points produce fairly transparent days. We will notice, in this work, cone-shaped spacers which are made with widely spaced Russian points and wheeled spacers which are fixed in the middle of one of the short sides of the spacer. two by throwing it over the void.

sneak peek - warrior nun Alien(1979) au
cw. mild sexual content
///
Beatrice rubs fretfully at the smudge, leaning against the spillage of wires from the console on the far side of the room. She has the helmet of Ava’s suit cradled in the crook of one elbow, visor flush with her forearm, and Ava is trying not to laugh or to sob, because she knows that Beatrice is holding it hostage from her.
‘You could refuse,’ Beatrice suggests, rocking from side to side in the small space. ‘Tell him this isn’t your job.’ She’s taking deep, controlled breaths, like at any moment it all might descend into hyperventilation, into screaming or crying or any number of inadmissible actions.
Beatrice frowns. More than that, really, but the expression is beyond Ava’s vocabulary.
‘This was a mistake from the beginning! Sending them out into a dust storm to investigate… what? Some snatch of signal we picked up half a million clicks from anything remotely civilised? You didn’t sign up for this! I-’
‘Bea.’ Ava speaks very softly, but she dips some steel into it. Just a trace, just a slight downturn of the many, many vowels in Beatrice’s name, but it’s enough to make her look up from where her thumb is worrying the hard plastic coating on the helmet.
‘What?’ She sounds aggrieved, and maybe she’s right to be. Their shuttle is sitting, damaged, on a hostile planet, rocks pinging against the hull at 17m/s when the winds are at their highest.
Ava sighs, stands up, the joints in her suit protesting because, like everything on the Nostromo, it’s a piece of crap. She moves over to Beatrice, only glancing once at the cameras lodged in the far corner of the room.
She knows that they offer a sweeping perspective on the bench and the wall behind, where rows of EVA suits are slotted into their cases, helmets sitting on top.
They don’t reach into the alcove where Beatrice has slotted herself. Ava knows the cameras, all the hidden places - and she knows that for now, at least, Beatrice is invisible.
She’s dressed in her navy overalls, unbuttoned down to the waist with a grease-stained shirt underneath and another, skin-tight tank top as a base layer.
Beatrice is always complaining about the cold, even when she’s down in the maintenance levels, where thermal engines work to keep their cargo above freezing.
Her hands are always heat-seeking; forever slipping up underneath the hem of Ava’s hoodie when she comes down to drink Bea’s terrible coffee and complain about Duretti and Vincent and the whole goddamn motley crew.
Ava has spent months in transit convincing herself that Beatrice is just a touchy person, that there’s nothing to it beyond her perfect strangeness. Engineers are always a little odd, and Beatrice, with her grease-dark fingers and her habit of sticking a pencil behind her ear, is no exception. She shivers, now, even as Ava approaches, fingers tightening on the crown of the EVA suit’s helmet as though afraid that Ava will simply snatch it away from her.
‘Listen,’ Ava pleads, and Beatrice makes a low noise in her throat. It’s the same sound she makes when she falls asleep in the middle of a holo and twists on the sofa beside Ava, plagued perpetually by bad dreams. It almost steals the rest of what Ava has to say, but she perseveres.
‘I know your contract is, like, basically built around the phrase ‘please hold this piece-of-shit ship together,’ but the rest of us aren’t so… well, lucky.’
Beatrice flinches – she has a habit doing of that; reacting violently to simple speech. ‘I’m not-‘ she starts, but her voice strangles back into silence. She looks down at the helmet, frowning. Doesn’t finish her sentence.
‘I’m just a spacer, Bea.’ Ava tries to make her voice light, but it’s like argon, pressing all the air out of the room. ‘We don’t get to choose what they put in our contract; we get half-shares and we say please and thank you and if by some miracle we make it back home, there’s always another contract waiting. That’s just the way it is.’
People like Beatrice don’t understand.
She’s gifted, and gentle, and to the ship she is sacred. Living down in the belly of the Nostromo with her noise-cancelling headphones and the tang of engine grease and the ceaseless roar of the ship’s heart beating through a maze of narrow ductways and pipes and cargo holds.
Ava’s a spacer, and her whole job is to get spaced. To climb into a cheap EVA suit and go out there, in the emptiness that you can’t imagine until it’s holding you. People like her are just labour, dispatched in droves to go mining in the quick of asteroid fields, to break shipwrecks or plug mineral samples out of lonely planetoids.
She was coming off a two-day bender when she signed this contract, words swimming on the page even more than usual. Fucking with her and she thought fuck it, what could they ask me to do that’s worse than my actual job?
Then the signal, Lilith leaning over her console, rangy and intent and making Ava hungry where she stood, watching with a half-eaten bowl of cereal balanced in her hand. She half-expected Lilith to report yet another shipwreck and start gunning for it, setting the ship on autopilot so that Ava could stroll over and touch her arm or her neck.
She was half-convinced that she’d get to leave her bowl unfinished, mag-locked to the table with the spoon tipping around as the ship changed course.
Lilith leaned towards her console and Ava was already thinking of her naked and familiar, fussing with the strap while Ava lay looking at her. A year should have made her boring – the long lean length of her, the latent strength in her arms and her shoulders and her hips – but Ava was anything but bored.
Trying not to let that frighten her.
But it never happened. Lilith didn’t tap coordinates into her nav-computer. She didn’t click her comm button and tell Duretti that she’d spotted another Class-C ship shattered out in deeper space. Instead, she picked up her headphones – the ones Ava had sneakily festooned in stickers of old soda brands; Pepsi Cola by her left ear and Coke sitting close to the plane of her occipital bone. With her maddening fingers she plugged the jack into her console and sat hunched in her seat, listening.
Then, low, she said, ‘Fuck,’ and whipped up out of her seat. Vanishing, and silent, and very much herself.
Ava left her cereal on the table anyway, standing abject and listening to the treads of Lilith’s boots tapping towards the upper decks. An hour later Duretti sent out a call for all the “EVA-specialists” to gather in the briefing room. Ava shuffled over to where Lilith stood against one wall, tapping a whiteboard marker against her thigh. She reached out, brushed her fingers, and Lilith wasn’t one to flinch but she did stiffen.
‘What the fuck is going on?’ Ava hissed, but it was too late.
Duretti stood and gestured to Lilith, who sighed and tore the cap off her marker. She sketched a rough map of the system as a serious of dots and ellipses and relative distances, wearing her officer’s jacket which was worn at the elbows from the way that Lilith sat with her arms propped on her desk. The half-rainbow patch of the USSCS NOSTROMO stood out starkly on her shoulder, stitched on by Ava, inexpertly.
It was lopsided, but everyone was looking at the map and the dot that Lilith drew a little larger than the rest, muttering that it wasn’t to scale, obviously, but you get the idea. It’s more of a rock than a planet. Some atmosphere, but only enough to make landing the shuttle a nightmare.
Michael raised his hand. ‘And, uh, respectfully Captain,’ he nodded to Duretti. ‘Why do we give a damn?’
‘Because,’ Duretti said repressively, ‘We just picked up a signal on the ground. An SOS.’

I should've been in bed over an hour ago, but I am dumb. Please enjoy (or "enjoy") another installment of Kyrian's career somehow going even worse in ficverse than in game.
Watcher X Escapes
Kyrian slowed the speeder to a stop outside the row of docking bays and shut off its engine and repulsor field. Not that either could have been heard over the heavy equipment loading the large freighter in the first bay.
It was a cargo port. Not one of Nar Shaddaa’s finest and not one of its grimiest. Some of the cargo being loaded might even have been legal in the civilized parts of the galaxy. Regular passenger services ran from Mezenti and Ducalon Spaceports, as did more reputable charter services. There were no fellow passengers here to get lost among, no crowds for Watcher X to disappear into, just a scattering of droids and dockworkers and a few guards in mismatched body armor.
Yet Watcher Two had been certain this was the port her long disgraced former colleague had chosen. Docking bay Isk-7, a short-range cargo shuttle bound for Hutta. How he’d contacted the pilot was just as much a mystery as how he’d disabled the cranial bomb that should have prevented his escape. He’d had access to far more than a prisoner should have, even one in so loose a prison as Shadow Town.
Watcher X—just X now that he was only an escaped prisoner?—wouldn’t quietly return to his quarters, no matter what Kyrian promised. He’d only aided the mission under threat of punishment from his conditioning; what loyalty he’d had to the Empire had ended with his imprisonment. He’d all but said as much.
Kaliyo glared at the guards as they passed, daring them to raise a weapon or object. They ignored her, focused only on the docking bay they protected.
No one spared them more than a quick appraisal as they made their way to Isk-7. With Kaliyo’s well-used armor and his dark clothing, they looked like they belonged. Just another ship captain or businessman and his bodyguard. That he was only armed with a blaster pistol at present simply added to that impression.
Infiltrating VerveGen had necessitated leaving his rifle and armorweave coat behind. There’d been no time afterward to retrieve them from Shadow Town. Not if they wanted any chance of stopping X’s flight.
Watcher Two certainly wanted them to. And Kaliyo was angry he’d used them.
Kyrian could see a corner of the blocky shuttle through the docking bay’s open doorway. It was the second time that day he’d been faced with a mission that had no hope of a peaceful resolution. VerveGen had been a mission to stop terrorists, a situation in which there’d truly been no other option, involving people who thought nothing of dooming others to a hideous death. Watcher X…
Kaliyo nudged him, none too gently. “C’mon, Agent. He’s getting away.”
Kyrian drew the blaster pistol and cautiously stepped through the doorway. If X had already boarded the ship, there would be little they could do.
The former watcher stood by one of the shuttle’s landing struts. He’d taken the time to clean up and change into sturdy spacer’s clothes. He looked ordinary, relaxed; even the cybernetics at his left ear and eyebrow wouldn’t have kept him from blending into any crowd.
He looked up almost as if he’d been expecting them.
“Scan your target,” he said, as coolly as ever. “Check him for weapons—held, concealed, improvised.” There was a holdout blaster clipped to his belt and something small in his left hand. “Now scan the rest of the area. Does he have allies? Are they hiding?”
Kyrian resisted the urge to look away from the man, to follow his direction and scan the docking bay for hiding places, for the shuttle’s pilot, for hired mercenaries. The bay had been empty save for the ship and X when he’d entered it. It was still empty.
“Are you outmatched without realizing?”
“Shut up,” Kaliyo snapped. “You’re just fucking with us.”
“I’m disappointed, Cipher.” X continued as if she hadn’t spoken. “I offered you information that could have given you power over your masters.”
“Don’t even.”
“Your help was invaluable,” Kyrian said. “Perhaps something could be arranged.”
“Oh, Cipher, you know that isn’t possible.” He looked thoughtful. “I misjudged you. I offered you power, information most Ciphers would leap at. I should have offered you freedom.”
“Shut up!” Kaliyo repeated. “Drop your weapons, don’t try anything funny, and maybe we don’t shoot you.”
“Yes.” X nodded slightly. “You balked at our methods, shied away from the hard necessities of your work, offered soft, inefficient solutions. I should have realized you’re too young, too naïve to be an actual Cipher agent. You’re in over your head.”
“You’re stalling,” Kyrian said. “You know you can’t escape. Let me find another solution.”
X chuckled. “Even now, you hesitate. Would you like a way out? A traitor’s end is far less pleasant than my own was meant to be.”
“I’m loyal to the Empire.”
“Are you?”
“Just shoot him!” Kaliyo raised her blaster.
“You should have taken my offer.” His left hand moved.
White agony blazed up Kyrian’s spine. He didn’t hear his blaster clatter to the docking bay floor or feel the ground slam into him as he collapsed. There was nothing but all-consuming pain. Then cold darkness swallowed him.
.
Blurry shapes bent over him. Indistinct voices muttered. The world tilted, slipped sideways, and vanished.
.
When he finally came to, it was to the familiar antiseptic smell of an infirmary. He felt drained, his muscles rubbery, and there was a foul taste in his mouth. The pain had faded to a dull ache along his spine.
“I kinda thought you were dead,” Kaliyo said.
“You’re lucky you’re not.” The doctor was middle aged, her steely gray hair cropped short. She shook her head. “Those implants could just as easily have killed you.”
Kyrian sat up stiffly, the thin sheet pooling around his hips.
“Careful.” The doctor put a steadying hand on his shoulder. “You’d be in a kolto tank if I had any free.”
“Thank you.” He could think of nothing else to say.
The room was small, the walls Imperial gray, the overhead light just a little too bright. A monitor beside the bed helpfully displayed his vitals. Kaliyo slouched against the far wall, her arms folded.
“You look like shit, Agent.”
“I’ve had better days.”
“I know you Intelligence folks don’t listen to the rest of us, but don’t stick experimental tech in your spine in the future.” The doctor set a clear jar on the table next to the bed. The implants lay at the bottom, fine strands of wire curling out of them like the legs of dead insects.
Kyrian swallowed, suddenly queasy.
“Rest,” the doctor ordered. “Eat something when you’re able to. Keep kolto patches on those incisions until they’re healed and there shouldn’t be any scarring. You’ll be fully recovered in a day or two, if you manage not to do anything else foolish.”
Kaliyo snorted.
“I should have time to rest.”
“That wasn’t a suggestion,” the doctor said. “You’re not cleared for duty until you’ve fully healed. I’ll explain it to your superiors if I have to.”
He nodded. “I understand.”
“Good.” She tossed a comm to him. “You’re to check in now that you’re awake.” The door closed behind her.
Kaliyo pushed off from the wall. “Bastard got away. You probably figured that.”
“I’m sorry.”
“You gotta get smarter, Agent. That freak was right about one thing: you’re too soft. It’s gonna get you killed.”
Kyrian turned the comm in his hands. “I don’t think that’s what Watcher X intended.”
“Naw, he thought it’d be more fun to leave you screaming on a docking bay floor. People aren’t like you think, Agent.”
“I know.” He switched on the comm.

Welcome to my shamblr!
Name's Heather! I mostly post about video games, but I tend to talk about anything whenever I feel like it.
I set some tags to make my stuff more readable and they are visible on my website, but I figured a pinned post might help some souls on mobile.
text.qd - mostly text posts about anything. edit.qd - sometimes I do some photo editing in GIMP, video editing in Kdenlive etc. screen.qd - screenshots. I enjoy snapping pics in video games, and as long as there is some artistic intent to them, if that makes sense, they'll be under this tag. anim.qd - very rarely used, screen.qd but gifs. ask.qd - me answering questions tag.qd - tag games
I enjoy old fps games - Quake, Half-Life and stuff from around that era - and the Legacy of Kain franchise is near and dear to my heart. I spend a lot of time playing these, but I barely talk about them here.
Currently I'm on Cyberpunk 2077 and Signalis brainrot so most of my original posts, as well as reblogs, are from these games. I do reblog some Metal Gear and Half-Life stuff, though, and occasionally you can spot me posting some of my own Half-Life sets made in gmod.
Terms of service:
- this blog is strictly 18+ - minors DNI - sometimes I post/reblog nsfw content - viewer discretion is advised - do not edit/repost my stuff/use my OCs without my blessing

Block Tumblr Live
Hey, want to know how to block tumblr live (on desktop) permanently?
The only official option available in tumblr settings is to 'snooze' it for 7 days. You do this by going to Settings > Account > Dashboard Settings > Snooze Tumblr Live for 7 days. But what if you don't want to do this every week?
It's very simple! Just make sure you have a good adblocker installed, such as uBlock Origin (for Chrome), right click on the video thumbnails and then choose to Block Element. In the option menu that comes up to allow you specify which element, you may be able to select the whole row by placing your cursor in the little spacer between the video thumbnails and the little '+' or whatever on the right. This should highlight the whole row and you should be good.
I hope this helps.
