Saturday marks the 80th anniversary of that declaration, but long after Earhart's disappearance, theories about what happened to her remain the subject of popular debate.

Earhart, born on July 24, 1897, in Atchison, Kansas, fell in love with flight in her 20s, and later became the first woman and second person to fly solo non-stop across the Atlantic.

In 1937, as her 40th birthday approached, Earhart decided to attempt a flight around the world, according to her official biography.

On June 1, Earhart, along with her navigator, Fred Noonan, departed from Miami and completed approximately 22,000 miles of the 29,000-mile flight before disappearing on July 2.

Earhart's biography says there is no proof of what happened to her, but bones found in 1940 on Nikumaroro Island, which is in the western Pacific Ocean, might have belonged to her.

A skull and bones from an arm and leg were found on the island, but in 1941, a scientist interpreted those bones as belonging to a man. However, in 1998, University of Tennessee anthropologist Richard Jantz reinterpreted them as coming from a woman of European ancestry, and about Earhart's height.

But in 2015, other researchers concluded the original assessment of a man was correct.

Jantz did another analysis in 2018, in which he used an inseam length and waist circumference from a pair of Earhart's trousers and again asserted the bones belonged to Earhart.

"I think we have pretty good evidence that it's her," he said in March of 2018.

Nonetheless, other theories about what happened to Earhart have prevailed.

One theory posits that Earhart and Noonan were captured by the Japanese after landing on the then Japanese-controlled Marshall Islands, according to National Geographic.

This theory claims that the Japanese thought the pair were U.S. spies, and that they were later killed or died while in captivity.

Many Earhart enthusiasts say this theory is too outlandish, according to National Geographic, and that the pilot likely crashed in the ocean and the plane has been lost to the sea.

The official belief by the U.S. government is that Earhart and Noonan crashed into the Pacific Ocean while attempting to reach Howland Island, which is approximately 946 miles from the Marshall Islands and approximately 406 miles from Nikumaroro Island.

Earhart's fate remains a mystery, but before her disappearance, she said she hoped her legacy would continue to inspire others to take on challenges.

“Please know I am quite aware of the hazards,” she said. “I want to do it because I want to do it. Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be but a challenge to others.”

Movie Thoughts: Documentary Shorts

5. Three Songs for Benazir (Netflix): I'm really sorry, I found this so boring. Best wishes for their family.

4. Audible (Netflix): Why did this feel like a string of trailers for a scripted film? Be normal! Be a documentary! Good kids, though. I'm excited by the uptick in deaf/mute characters at the Oscars in the last couple of years (Sound of Metal, Feeling Through, CODA, Drive My Car) and inspired to seek out more.

3. The Queen of Basketball: Ben Proudfoot was nominated for A Concerto Is a Conversation last year, featuring and co-directed by Kris Bowers. Both films are lovely portraits of charming subjects. I find them mildly pointless, but heartwarming, informative celebrations of black excellence. Sadly, Luisa Harris died in January, and I'm grateful she could leave behind this reflection on her legacy.

2. Lead Me Home (Netflix): This is technically flawed, but it was the one that upset me the most. It needed to be shorter: the transitions juxtaposing the shiny city with the homeless encampments were so cool, but eventually they kept repeating with nothing new to say. 1. When We Were Bullies: I love documentaries that are just a filmmaker sitting down and telling you a story. I found it interesting the entire time, I appreciated Jay Rosenblatt's frankness and the organic messiness of the story, and the collage film technique grew on me even if I found it a bit twee. It raises MANY fascinating ethical questions I haven't worked through yet; I expect to have an interesting discussion with my parents.

Sontag first came to fame with her essay “Notes on Camp” (published in the Partisan Review in 1964), which analyzed camp as a specific aesthetic phenomenon. She went on to publish several notorious books (nonfiction, fiction, and plays) on themes that ranged from photography and culture to AIDS and human rights: among others, Against Interpretation (1966), Styles of Radical Will (1969), On Photography (1977), Illness as Metaphor (1978), The Way We Live Now (1990), In America (1999), and Regarding the Pain of Others (2003). She also got actively involved in many political issues, visiting and writing about areas of conflicts, such as Vietnam and Sarajevo. Her commitment to tackling a broad range of issues, bridging through her work the intellectual and the activist worlds, and the first impressions she often made as hostile, aloof, condescending, earned her quite a reputation – she definitely drew ire and criticism for a few of her positions. Sontag’s journals have also been published – Reborn: Journals and Notebooks 1947-1963 and As Consciousness Is Harnessed to Flesh: Journals and Notebooks, 1964–1980, both edited by her son David Reiff. Early on, she lost herself in books, dedicated herself to the intellectual life. She married at 17, to a professor 10 years older than her, after just a few dates; she had a son with him; she left him nine years later, when her son turned seven. She needed something else, though it’s hard to say she truly found it in her career – which often felt to her as a kind of impersonation. She suffered from something akin to impostor syndrome. Fiction helped her feel less stifled, liberated her to experiment more in her writing.

When she passed away, controversy arose because many of her obituaries barely mentioned her relationships, even though she had lived with well-known figures like María Irene Fornés, the Cuban-American playwright, Lucinda Childs, the dancer, or Annie Leibovitz, the photographer, with whom she spent more or less the last fifteen years of her life. In this sense, her bisexuality has been a point of debate. Not that it’s up for debate – in a 2000 interview with The Guardian, she was fairly open and straightforward about it, even though she kept denying that Annie Leibovitz and her were anything more than close friends. Rather, she acknowledged the complexity of labels, of the coming out process in remarks she made to Brendan Lemon, the editor-in-chief of OUT:

“I grew up in a time when the modus operandi was the 'open secret'. I'm used to that, and quite OK with it. Intellectually, I know why I haven't spoken more about my sexuality, but I do wonder if I haven't repressed something there to my detriment. Maybe I could have given comfort to some people if I had dealt with the subject of my private sexuality more, but it's never been my prime mission to give comfort, unless somebody's in drastic need. I'd rather give pleasure, or shake things up.”

People justify the continued erasure of her sexuality because who cares about labels anyway? How did her being bi matter to the genius of her work? While I do understand the rationale behind the “I don’t want to be seen as a gay writer, but just as a writer,” things are, of course, more complex than that. We’re never just writers. Our identities – the ones we construct for ourselves and the ones we’re imposed – don’t go away when we write and publish and interact with others. To me, Sontag’s life and work is a reminder of the importance of representation and visibility. Dismissing discussions about her sexuality as something not relevant to her work, or unfounded speculations, means dismissing her own articulation of her identity.

US officers fired over photos imitating chokehold on Black man | USA News

Three police officers have been fired over photos showing them re-enact a chokehold used on Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old Black man who died last year after police stopped him on the street in a Denver suburb.

Officers Erica Marrero, Kyle Dittrich and Jaron Jones had imitated the chokehold used to subdue McClain in October last year.

In a statement posted online, interim police chief of Aurora Vanessa Wilson confirmed on Friday that Marrero and Dittrich had been fired. The third officer, Jones, resigned on Tuesday, she said.

She added that she understood “the devastating impact this incident has had on the relationship between the community and the [police] department”.

A fourth officer, Jason Rosenblatt, was also fired on Friday, she said. He was sent the photo by one of the three and had responded with a text saying “haha”, local US media reported.

Rosenblatt, a white Aurora officer, had helped stop McClain in August last year for wearing a ski mask and “being suspicious”.

After police put McClain in a chokehold, paramedics injected him with a sedative and he later suffered cardiac arrest.

Officer Nathan Woodyard, who put McClain in the chokehold, also got the photos but he was not disciplined because he did not respond.

“We are ashamed, we are sickened, and we are angry,” Wilson said. The officers may not have committed a crime, but the photographs are “a crime against humanity and decency”, she said.

McClain’s death had become a rallying cry amid a national reckoning over police brutality and racial injustice, with the state reopening the case for possible criminal charges and federal officials looking into a civil rights investigation.

In several places, the chokehold has been banned and other police reforms passed after nationwide protests.

‘Rotten to the core’

McClain’s family, friends and community activists noted during a rally that justice was swifter for the mocking photograph than the use of force that led to McClain’s death.

The two other officers who stopped the young man are still on the force as authorities look again into possible criminal charges after clearing them last year. 

“Rosenblatt got fired not for killing Elijah, not for murdering Elijah, but for making fun of Elijah,” said Terrence Roberts, a community organiser and family friend.

“That is the culture that we’re fighting, where a police officer can murder a Black man, a Black child, and keep his job and stay on the force so he can go make fun of this child.

Several police agencies have taken swift action to punish officers, including those involved in George Floyd’s death on May 25 in Minneapolis that ushered in global demonstrations. 

For Elijah McClain’s mother, Sheneen McClain, “it was just devastating to see that people were mocking the murder of her son”, family lawyer Mari Newman said.

“The fact that three on-duty, in-uniform police officers thought that it was appropriate to re-enact the murder, jokingly, shows that the department is rotten to the core,” she said.

Facing increasing pressure as celebrities and others on social media called for justice, Colorado Governor Jared Polis last week ordered the state attorney general to reopen McClain’s case.

‘Stop tensing up!’

The officers stopped McClain, a massage therapist, after a 911 call on August 24 reported him as suspicious because he was wearing a ski mask and flailing his arms. He begged them repeatedly to let go of him, according to body-camera video.

After the chokehold that cut off blood to his brain, paramedics administered 500 milligrams of a sedative to calm him down. A forensic pathologist could not determine what exactly led to McClain’s death but said physical exertion during the confrontation likely contributed.

Police body-camera video shows an officer getting out of his car, approaching McClain and saying, “Stop right there. Stop. Stop … I have a right to stop you because you’re being suspicious.”

In the video, the officer turns McClain around and repeats, “Stop tensing up!” As McClain tries to escape the grip, the officer says, “Relax or I’m going to have to change this situation.”

As other officers join to restrain McClain, he begs them to let go and says, “You guys started to arrest me, and I was stopping my music to listen.”

Aurora police have said McClain refused to stop walking and fought back when officers tried to take him into custody.

In the video, McClain tells officers: “Let go of me. I am an introvert. Please respect the boundaries that I am speaking.”

The US attorney’s office, the US Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division and the FBI announced this week they are looking into whether to launch a civil rights investigation. Federal authorities said they were also considering an investigation into the photos.

The 23-minute discussion was embargoed until yesterday morning for whatever reason (maybe it had something to do with the Super Bowl), but this was the list of invitees:

I think all of us would probably say that those are six of the “main guys” on the beat. They’re usually up front, asking the bulk of questions during press conferences and scrums. They work for legacy and/or respected media outlets with significant readership. Their stuff is going to move the needle more than the guy writing for the Hazleton Standard-Speaker.

The public relations concept is simple enough; if you put Carson Wentz in front of the entire group, it’s just going to turn into a shit show of people yelling over each other to try to get their questions in. Doing it in the auditorium and passing a microphone around might make sense, but a scrum would be a nightmare.

So you take a small group of reporters who are on the beat daily, put them in a more intimate setting, and let your quarterback be more comfortable facing half a dozen people instead of 25 people all fumbling to get a recorder or a TV camera in his face.

To their credit, the six people who participated got a lot of great quotes from Wentz. I didn’t finish any of their articles thinking, “why didn’t they ask him about (this topic) instead?”

But some people were annoyed that they weren’t invited, which is understandable.

The other reporters aren’t a “circus act,” but the group as a whole can be. There are a TON of people down there regularly, and while the Sixers beat doesn’t feature half as many folks as the Eagles beat, we’ve had some Bryan Colangelo and Markelle Fultz availabilities that turned into people sort of fumbling over one another trying to shout out their questions.

Mike is right; Jeff McLane is hardly a homer. I mean, Howie Roseman laughed in his face less than a month ago in front of the entire press corps. So it’s not like McLane was invited to the secret Carson Wentz meeting because he would go easy on Carson or fall in line, it was because he’s there every single day and writes for the city’s premier newspaper and legacy media outlet.

Yeah, I don’t think anyone was going to get this invitation and say, “thanks, but no thanks.”

Thing is, this happens all the time in sports media. It’s not just exhibited in these kinds of situations.

For instance, if a front office executive is looking for a leak, is he going to the Philadelphia Inquirer or the Pottstown Mercury? He’s going to the Inquirer, because it’s a massive media organization in a large market while the Mercury is a smaller and hyper-local newspaper. That’s not to insult the fine folks in Upper Montco, it’s just pointing out the fact that their reach and their ability to disseminate information takes place on a much smaller scale by the nature of what they are.

Beyond that, the reason no local beat reporters ever break anything is because team leaks come from the top down. They’re given to national guys like Adam Schefter or Adrian Wojnarowski via front office executives, agents, and people in the NFL and NBA league offices. It doesn’t mean local beats are incapable, it just makes more sense for sources to spread information via national media instead.

I don’t think Eagles PR did anything wrong here. They avoided the “circus atmosphere” by picking out six of the main beat guys and putting them in a setting with Wentz that was more conducive to fair questions and honest answers. I wouldn’t label any of those six as “homers,” though maybe Roob can be that way sometimes.

The only thing that might have made more sense was to only have one person from the Inquirer and one person from NBCSP, because you had six guys representing four outlets, two of which put their content behind a pay wall. You could have invited Jimmy Kempski or Mike Kaye or Zack Rosenblatt or one of the WIP guys instead, which would have given you six reporters from six different outlets.

Either way, interesting public relations case study for the aspiring reporter.
