I think one of the slept on things that makes The Secret History feel like a real world is Donna Tartt's willingness to introduce a character that is just never brought up again (or brought up once or twice again.)
Because i'm real life, not every person you meet is going to have significance in your life. Not everyone is going to change that plot. Think about the teacher that takes over when Julian leaves. Or the farmer who claims to have seen Bunny. Or Richard's one night stand. Even the man stalking Henry and Bunny in Italy doesn't show up later.
And not only does this fill the gaps in the world, it absolutely helps build suspense. You never know if a character might have significance later, because there's simply no pattern to follow. It keeps you guessing.
Did I mention I started rereading The Secret History

Francis Abernathy’s Relative was on the Titanic.
I know Jack, and Rose, and their whole story were nonexistent.
But The Titanic is my comfort film and The Secret History is my comfort book. And I don’t really know what I’m trying to say; it just makes me smile.

Finally did a Glee fic after a bajillion years... I think this one is gonna become some of my best work, as I have a different perspective on writing now than I did when I first started writing fanfics. This'll be something I write in between my Catwoman story, and my original work.

trick or treat!
treat!! have an excerpt from my nevermoor fic that was originally for mogtober but which i haven’t finished. it’s a 5 + 1 with five times wundersmiths added to the gossamer spun garden and one time a wundersmith began it again. the excerpt is the first part of it
Ariel Kingston
Ariel had been imagining this moment for almost a year. At first, it was a faint what-if while they were teaching one of the younger Wundersmiths, Cathaoir Corcoran, the Art of Weaving. Then, it was something that they thought of more and more often, and it became serious.
Wundersmiths hadn’t been around a long time, only about three or four generations. Almost everyone (even some Wundersmiths) still wondered if their cycle was going to be around forever, or if it was simply a short phenomenon that they were lucky to see. Ariel wanted to create something permanent. Something that would last, and show the legacy of Wundersmiths, even if they would fade into the past.
Something that would show what they had stood for.
Ariel stood in the vast chamber of Van Ophoven, a stately but empty room often used for the few formal functions and traditions the Wundersmiths hosted. Ariel remembered Emmeline Van Ophoven, a Wundersmith who’d been old when they’d been found. She’d been larger than life to that ten year old, but she’d taught them well.
She’d taught them Weaving first.
Ariel was excellent at all of the Wundrous Arts, as were all of the Wundersmiths (except Cathaoir Corcoran, but he’d come along. After all, they were only nine), but they especially delighted in Weaving.
Ariel started with flowers, magnificent magnolias and sunflowers rising high. With them, Weaving was a dance, a joyful, ever-evolving one like the ones that swept through the city on Morningtide. From their fingers sprung roses, dahlias, and the carnivorous white pitcher plants (which they’d been taken with as a child), fully grown and in full bloom.
Next, they moved onto the trees they’d always imagined after hearing folk tales by the fire, before he was brought to the Wundrous Society. Starting as small sprouts, they led them up towards the ceiling with his fingers, as elegantly as a conductor of an orchestra. The trees were silver and gold, with leaves that changed color when Ariel tilted their head.
For the last piece of their plan, they walked around the beginnings of the garden, and where their feet stepped, stepping stones were left. They shimmered like stained glass, but were as hard as diamond.
As Ariel left Van Ophoven, they looked over their shoulder with a smile. They’d have to show Cathaoir soon. The kid loved plants, and would probably delight in being able to practice in a place that felt fun, and, most importantly, comfortable.

do you have any wlw book recommendations?
Yes I do! I'm going to start with books I have read then put others I'm aware of at the bottom. I will say make sure you properly research any beforehand just in case there are any potential trigger warnings you want to avoid but I'll try and include them in this list for you with a brief description. Also I lean heavily toward Fantasy in my genre but here you go:
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon (Standalone) This is going down as one of my favourites but I know the size of it is quite daunting to some people. It's high fantasy so you do spend a good portion of the beginning trying to get a grip on the world and the characters, there's a few different stories happening with one of the main POV's being wlw. If you like Lord of the Rings, Dragons, powerful women, huge world building and magic then definitely give it a go!
Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan (Trilogy, Complete) This one does come with some Trigger Warnings so definitely research this series instead of going in completely blind! That being said I liked how it was handled and I feel a lot of people avoid this trilogy because of those warnings but this has one of my favourite wlw couples in. Again if you're looking for a book rich in culture, magic, women, women with swords, and a central wlw couple then give it a go (But please do look into it beforehand).
A Dark and Hollow Star by Ashley Shuttleworth (Series, Ongoing) I believe currently the author has 4 books planned, the second to be released this year. There's 4 main characters in this one, one wlw relationship and one mlm, the POV crosses between them. I don't want to give too much away but this is a modern day setting fantasy with world building on top, very Fae and magic heavy. But i'll say it again, women with swords.
Crier's War by Nina Varela (Duology, Complete) This one I found people raving about online before the second part was released and I wasn't a huge fan of the first book however I fell in love with the second one. I've reread it since and enjoyed the first a lot more than I did on my first read through (Probably because I had more time with the characters). Again it has a central wlw romance and is fantasy!
We Set the Dark on Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia (Duology, Complete) There is not enough people recommending this duology online, not only is it a central wlw romance in the middle of a rebellion but it actually deals with immigration and equality.
Malice by Heather Walter (Duology, Ongoing) I am cautiously adding this one because it's not finished and I actually don't know how the story ends for these two yet but I did really enjoy it. A sleeping beauty retelling with the villain at the centre. If you want morally grey then I recommend! The second book is released this year.
Once & Future by Amy Rose Capetta and Cori McCarthy (Duology, Complete) Futuristic King Arthur retelling with a sapphic female Arthur at the centre! It also has a gay Merlin and other diverse characters including Non-Binary! wlw and mlm romance, POV switches between characters and AGAIN, women with swords! Like with Crier's War I preferred the second book but would recommend a read.
Queen of Coin and Whispers by Helen Corcoran (Standalone) Queen falls in love with her spymaster? What more do we need in life. Underrated book, don't see a lot of people talking about it but I enjoyed it.
Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust (Standalone) Cursed Princess falls in love with a demon and learns to actually embrace who she is? A nice short standalone fantasy read.
The Scapegracers by Hannah A Clarke (Series, Ongoing) Not sure how many are in this series but I enjoyed the first one. A modern day setting, there's not really a central wlw romance yet in the story but it's hinted and the friendships make up for it in the first book so I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes. I'm going to also list other books that are Sapphic though I haven't read them yet so I can't give much more information on them:
A lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee
Wild and Wicked Things by Frencesca May
You Exist Too Much by Zaina Arafat
This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar
The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow
The Winter Duke by Claire Eliza Bartlett
Plain Bad Heroines by Emily M. Danforth
Ash by Malinda Lo
Gearbreakers by Zoe Hana Mikuta
One Last Stop by Casey Mcquiston
Honey Girl by Morgan Rogers
The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea by Maggie Tokuda-Hall
Afterlove by Tanya Byrne
The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri
Also Remember the writing styles vary across the board so whilst you may not enjoy one of these books that's not say you wont' find something you like in these. Hopefully you can find something you enjoy here!

Welcome to the Dead Guy Death Match Elimination Round!
Due to the broad nature of death as a concept, most of the submitted characters only received a few votes each causing a massive tie. I figured the fairest way to sort out this issue would be to hold an elimination round to let you guys vote on who you want to make it into the bracket.
There will be two elimination rounds the first of which will start on Monday the 3rd of April at 3pm BST and the second will start on Saturday the 8th of April at 3pm BST.
Elimination Round 1 will feature polls of 5 or 6 unrelated characters (all of the matchups were generated randomly) for you to vote on. The lowest voted character will be eliminated and all of the remaining options will progress to the bracket.
Elimination Round 2 will feature polls of differing numbers of characters from the same or similar media and only the highest ranked character among them will progress to the bracket, all of the others will be eliminated.
Both sets of polls will last 24 hours.
I've tried my best to only include official images for all of the characters on the polls but I'm not familiar with every series listed so, when the polls go up, if you notice I've used a fanart or cosplay image without permission or credit please let me know and I'll add credit and correct it for any future appearances of that character.
The matchups are listed under the read more and hyperlinked to the polls
I apologise if I’ve accidentally spelled something wrong or used a wrong name for something, I’m not familiar with every series listed.
There will be spoilers for many series ahead.
