A New Calamity: Page 464 Chapter 16 Cover
I'm back! (Dec. 6 2023) It's been a VERY rough road since the end of Ch 15. I found out I have two new tumors in my brain. Soon I will have to do precision brain radiation on top of the chemo I've been receiving. I'm not sure what the side effects will be, probably memory loss, pain, shaky hands and confusion (if my experience with brain radiation in 2019 turns out to be similar). I'm just going to take it slow and try to make really good work. Thank you to all my readers and patrons. :) Donations are appreciated. Patreon / Ko-fi / Paypal

Ronin picks fluff up gently and gives gentle pets and cuddles, and sits on the couch and commits soothing nap cuddles
Tumblr media
Inside the house things are more laid back and calm. Giving it's just Red and the surprise guest for now.
Seeing Ronin on the couch Red casually leans over. His eyes split between himself and Br.
"Oh? You a friend of Vio's? Nice to see you also like Fluff"

WIP of a batch of sprites I'm making for a new Visual Novel (because I love adding new projects to my already very long list) set in my Blue Bones universe. I haven't started writing the script yet, but I do have detailed notes and, as you can see here, I'm currently working on the art for it.
I might randomly switch between this story and my remake of AVIS., if only because I was getting frustrated with the code of my two Unity projects and I'd like to get this story out of my head sooner rather than later (with breaks in between of course).
All of the art will be uploaded to my Patreon in due time, with Ronin's concepts and sprites already uploaded and Calliope's scheduled for tomorrow.
(Ronin [left] and Flynn [middle] use he/him, Calliope [right] uses she/her)
Reblogs appreciated, thank you! 💖✨

Help me out here: in early Yugioh Zexal, Yuma saw all the statues Roku had, and could instantly identify them, implying that everyone in Zexal knows about Yugi & Jaden's stories. Yet in Duel Links Trey implied he & Quattro know nothing about Kaiba corp (which is impossible if we cross reference Roku's statues). How does Trey not knowing Kaiba corp make sense in that case?
Hmm, never thought about that. Best guess is the writers and creators didn't think of that.

CW WARNING FOR SIBLING/FAMILY DEATH, CW DEATH. Please let me know if I need to add more warnings!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally finished this comic redraw of one of my oldest and also saddest comics to date :)
I originally planned for this comic to become a part of a bigger future/apocalypse au, but with the tmnt iteration and other projects I wanna work on, I figured it's best to shelve it. Not to mention I didn't have too many plot ideas anyway! It was pretty much a lost ronin lost years type au where Leo is haunted by his brothers :)
I also wanted to post this all at once due to the sort of...twist? I didn't want to have it sit there where you guys wouldn't know what was happening next. Best to get the hurt out of the way all at once!
I hope everyone enjoys it, I really enjoyed doing the extra color and finishing on this comic!! Also F!Donnie's design was pretty fun to draw!!
I don't have a link to the og version because I never posted it here, but I love seeing the huge improvement in dialogue and just drawing in general. It looks a lot more finished <3
Anyway, new birthday special update tomorrow! I hope that is enough comfort for you all because I will also get back to posting the spinoff comic and it is....similarly devastating to this one (no spoilers though <3)

quick design I made for this au I've been thinking abt ^_^
Everything I have to say about it rn is in the post I just linked so I'd recommend reading that lols
otherwise I think when they first found out they were system was around 14-15 yrs old and when everyone first split off they were around 2-5. So abt 4 yrs old. I'd imagine the trauma was Shredder related, and the things that snapped the plate was probably the shredder / foot clan invading them and Splinter's home. There was a HUGE disconnect between their fight-flight-freeze response which is what initially caused the split, with Ronin freezing at first but the brain knowing if they didn't fight right fucking now that them and their dad would die, so Raph split off to well, fight as well as he could. (Giant magic ninpo outburst is probably what saved them)
That's why raphs the oldest but also the least emotionally stable, because I'd imagine he'd be the Main trauma holder, with Leo not having any knowledge of the invasion happening or the circumstances leading up to it. He's still aware it happened though just from Splinter talking abt it, but for his whole life felt disconnected from everything that happened.
So their roles would be:
Leo; technically host but shares front with everyone pretty often. ANP and physical caretaker
Raph; Trauma holder and physical protector. EP whose only really out during training or when they're in danger
Donnie; Emotional protector and gatekeeper. ANP trauma holder . Likes making shit and resident braincell haver
Mikey; Emotional caretaker EP. not a trauma holder but is aware of it. Mostly there to make sure the body expresses their emotions and doesn't have a panic attack

what do you make of samurai remnant so far? As it's a weeb game, I don't expect any of the normal review sites I trust to cover it
I /hate/ Musou combat and I'm sick of Servants, so me avidly talking about this game means it's way better than even my biases can overlook.
Here's the thing: the vast majority of Type-Moon games fucking suck, because they make visual novels, not video games. "The story's good enough to make you play through this abomination" is the battlecry of Fate/Extra fans. If it wasn't for Melty Blood they might not even have any games where people play for the actual game.
This is not the case with Fate/Samurai Remnant. It's not here to blow your mind out of the water, but it's clearly a title made by people who are both great fans of the source material and are very experienced with producing games on a budget. Solid execution all-around from combat design to character art to environments.
The most notable thing about FSR though is that this game cares a lot about how things are supposed to feel. I've talked enough about how great it is to have Servants feel like real powerhouses again, but this level of care exists within the rest of the game.
"How would it feel to be partners with a superpowered being?" is the defining question informing the majority of the game design. If there's a high place you can't climb without a ladder, Saber simply throws you up there with their superhuman strength. If you're squeezing through a tight alleyway, Saber simply reappears via magic on the other side, sometimes getting ahead of you and waving mockingly while Iori can only grumble and slowly pull his fleshy human body along a tight crevice. There is actual destruction in the aftermath of the first Servant battle that you can see for yourself, which informs Iori's motivation of putting an end to this death game. Iori's neighbors express relief that he's safe because they saw his house explode, or tell him about the whereabouts of his sister Kaya, making the town feel just a little bit more like a setting Iori actually lives in.
As Iori's relationship with Saber grows, the game also tacks on more and more mechanics involving their cooperation. At the very start, Saber cannot be controlled whatsoever and is entirely dependent on the AI. As you progress though, you unlock the ability to give Saber commands and even play as them for a short time. But that's not all, Saber's AI will also start to cooperate with you, following up on enemies that Iori knocks away with a finishing move, or calling for special partner moves called Link Strikes. When you're in trouble, there's even a chance Saber will come rescue you, activating a quick time event where they lock blades with the enemy, attempting to push them back.
This is what the whole game is like. Samurai Remnant doesn't have the resources of an AAA game with an army of developers to create features like ultra HD 4k textures for all environments or realistically shrinking testicles, but you can feel most ideas started with a question of "What would it be like to have Saber here and how do we depict that in some way?" Saber would be fascinated at modern (17th century) Japan, so they often run from place to place pointing out new things to gawk at and demanding explanations from Iori. They didn't have food stalls, paper, or money in their life, so Iori has side missions to buy from every food stall to satiate Saber's hunger, which murders your wallet in-game as you are a poor ronin living hand to mouth every day and need odd jobs to make money.
It feels good to play, and not even as a Type-Moon fan where a lot of these things are something I've been asking for. I mean it's good to see another mid budget game that's neatly focused on simple, solid execution. Most review sites are giving it around a 7.5-8/10, and I'm telling you this isn't a 7.5 from a Type-Moon fan pleading with you that playing Fate/Extella's Altera route makes it actually worth it, this is a 7.5 from people seeing a decently hefty, well-made title.

Fantasy Cities Volume 1
Tumblr media
Around a year ago, I published a series looking at city settings from various fantasy games. I looked at 7 cities including Doskvol, Spire, Eversink, The City from a|state, Into the Cess and Citadel, Infinigrad, and Endon from Magical Industrial Revolution. I’ve now taken those 7 essays and expanded and improved them, added 2 more essays on Lankhmar from DCC’s boxed set and Freeport, a Pathfinder 1e city from Green Ronin. This PDF, Fantasy Cities Vol 1, is available now on my patreon.
Here’s an excerpt from the introduction
In the history of the fantasy genre, cities have an interesting place. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, which created so much of what we consider generic about fantasy, doesn't really care for cities. Which makes sense because the books themselves feel like an elegy for a time before industrialization, a love letter to the countryside - to woods and streams and the sands below your feet. The cities of Middle Earth are, at their best, noble and static, and at their worst, corrupt and fallen to the hubris of man.
The earliest thriving fantasy cities are probably in the sword and sorcery of writers like Fritz Lieber or Michael Moorcock. These stories were influenced by, among other things, the machismo of pulp magazine stories. The cities reflect this. At their best, they're a canvas for male bravado and havens for debauchery and dissolution. At their worst, they're predatory and authoritarian.
In modern fantasy, the city is ascendant. The old tropes withered under post-modernism's sarcastic glare. Now, you get Ankh-Morpork and Bas Lag and many more that capture the contradictions, potential, and romance of cities as places to spend your lives. But what about games? A city in a novel has to be interesting on the page. A city in a game has to be interesting at the table, it has to bear the weight of the imagination of 3-5 people over a shitty internet connection. That's where I started the series affectionately known (by me) as WWTAWWTAC (pronounced whatawhatac), i.e. What We Talk About When We Talk About Cities.
And here’s an excerpt from the new entry on Lankhmar:
Creating a roleplaying game supplement for an existing fantasy city is tricky. It's trickier when it's a place as famous as Lankhmar, the City of the Black Toga, the City of Sevenscore Thousand Smokes. Not only are the stories well-loved, the city is an inspiration for other well-loved cities, notably Discworld's Ankh-Morpork which started out as a loving pastiche before evolving into something deeper. (Even the word "ankh" comes from Lankhmar). This means that you have to walk the line between giving fans what they want and making it a useful, usable supplement. Basically, DCC's approach is to not invent any new lore whatsoever - as far as I can see. They lay out what Leiber's originally stories say about Lankhmar and then give themselves permission to colour within the lines with small, inoffensive details. The end result isn't radical or surprising but it does seem genuinely quite good.
I’ve titled it Volume 1 because if we hit the patreon drive’s goal, I’ll do a Volume 2. Maybe I can finally tackle Waterdeep or Ptolus. Maybe I can expand to cities in novels and actually compare them to cities in games directly. Maybe I can look at cities in video games. Where does Dunwall from Dishonored end and Duskwall begin? There’s lots of things to explore!
Thanks to the 30+ folks who signed up last week, we’re currently at 94 out of 150. So if you’re doing okay and able to support, please head over to patreon and subscribe!
