Tips for portraying the chemistry between your characters in front of their friends or family:
1. Non-verbal cues: Show their natural gravitation, shared glances, and subtle physical contact.
2. Inside jokes and laughter: Highlight their shared humor and lighthearted moments.
3. Magnetic presence: Make others notice their captivating energy when they enter a room.
4. Genuine interest and support: Illustrate their caring and supportive interactions.
5. Subtle displays of affection: Include brief touches or tender gestures that hint at their connection.
6. Protective instincts: Showcase their instinct to shield and defend each other.
7. Body language mirroring: Describe how they mirror each other's gestures and emotions.
8. Genuine admiration: Show them openly expressing admiration for each other's qualities.
9. Unspoken understanding: Highlight their ability to understand each other without words.
10. Observant friends or family members: Include characters who notice and comment on their chemistry.
Remember, these moments should feel natural and add depth to your characters' relationships.

Is it me, or is Vivziepop bad at writing romantic relationships? It feels like she wants to write "problematic", drama-filled romance where the characters start out toxic, there are misunderstandings, betrayals etc cuz the show is supposed to be about "problematic gays", and that's perfectly valid, but she can't write chemistry. So far, it feels like Blitzo clings to Stolas because he's afraid he will end up alone and unloved, but doesn't actually care for him as a person. He often looks uncomfortable with Stolas' flirting even if he reciprocates sometimes.
I've seen couples in children's media with much better written-relationships and chemistry, like Roxanne and Megamind. It's clear they enjoy each other's company, they have mutual banter and flirting and he respects her intelligence.
I know Stolitz is supposed to be "toxic" pre-character development but at this point it still sucks that so far, it's impossible to tell what the characters like about each other other than the sex.
(I've been told that Stolas enjoys how Blitzo made him laugh when they met during the circus but that's not been developed enough as a concept to count).
Yeah here's a thought: When has he made Stolas laugh during adulthood?! Where was that moment? What do they even have in common other than liking dudes?
Oh shit. I think I get why fans of this show accuse critics of being homophobic. It's because this relationship has literally no substance other than "they're gay". (Or Stolas might be, anyway. Their specific orientations are never clarified in the show that I can recall.) Oh, you don't like this mlm relationship? You must hate ALL mlm relationships. Funny how the fans are the ones fixated on that aspect while no one I've seen criticize the show has ever cited the homoerotica as evidence that this relationship sucks. No, it sucks because there's absolutely no depth to it. There's nothing to make us root for it to work.
Sure, the characters have their own personalities as individuals, and there's potential for chemistry in how those personalities and backgrounds oppose each other, but the show never explores it. What would happen if Stolas tried to fit into Blitzo's poverty-stricken school of hard knocks, or if Blitzo tried to fit in with high society? What if they just had a conversation about what life has been like for each of them? Where are the bonding moments that show us this is more than just a transactional arrangement (or at least that it could be)? What made Stolas suddenly fall in love with Blitzo offscreen between Episodes 6 and 7, after treating him like an object the entire season? Why the fuck does he care if Blitzo comes to see him in the hospital or not? Why should we care as viewers?
Funny enough, this neat video by LocalScriptMan just came out (check out this channel, seriously), and it talks about going deeper into writing relationships than just smashing two characters with differing personalities together. Again, differing personalities can create potential for chemistry (as each character learns new perspectives from the other), but a pairing of opposites isn't chemistry in and of itself.
If Helluva Boss's writers gave us a good mlm relationship with actual substance, more power to 'em! Maybe we'll get one with Asmodeus and Fizzarolli, but... ehh. It's doubtful at this point.

I want more actors to talk about their experiences with romance roles. I wanna know what kind of things they do to improve their chemistry, or practice being physical. I wanna know their thought process behind it, how much of the little details are discussed beforehand or improvised. I wanna know how they go from “friendly costars” when the cameras are off to “I am going to kiss you like we’re in love”.
Maybe it’s just my demisexual brain, but I can’t help but wonder how they all do it. How do you look at your best friend or costar and feel nothing, then kiss and touch them like a lover so convincingly?? Then go back to normal afterwards??
Like maybe I’m just an awkward gremlin, but if I was filming with a friend, I would feel pretty weird about kissing them, and certainly would feel embarrassed afterwards.
When two people have that much chemistry between them, it’s super hard for my brain to not wonder about cause like… I feel like I would be catching feelings so fast. I have so much respect for actors who portray intimate relationships on film.
(I have thought about this constantly, but yes, this post is brought to you by Red, White, & Royal Blue. And no, I’m not tryng to ship the actors; I am just in awe of their chemistry.)
The way Nick holds Taylor’s face, like how does he not swoon?
Tumblr media
Scenes like these! Did they talk before hand like “okay I’m gonna kiss your bicep” “k it’s chill”
Tumblr media
Seriously the way Nick pulls Taylor, and has his hand in his hair, I would fall in love so fast

I find it amusing that “chemistry” between two people is literally biochemical interactions in our brains that drive feeling.
We choose the people that make us feel the most ourselves.
And in the absence of this person, I pray you to find the courage to be alone, as it is better to be alone than with the wrong person.
Oh, but how would be distinguish between love and chemistry?

You People; Great cast, no commitment.
Tumblr media
If you're going to do social commentary, do social commentary. If you're going to do romance, do romance. Social commentary is hard to get right and I don't think it's one of those things that will ever be done right, but that doesn't mean it can't be good. This movie never fully commits and that makes it grating.
Ezra is a white man who considers himself a voice on BLACK culture. Eddie Murphy and Kim are the only people to call him out on it. Ezra never has an answer. Also, he only has one black friend. I get they're all Jewish. It makes sense, but you are supposedly so engrossed in black culture, yet you only have one black friend? Also, he's never dated a black woman. Like ever? I don't know about you but that makes my negro senses tingle. It's feeling very Drake, constantly saying he loves black women yet has never been seen dating one and having a white baby momma. His connection to the culture is finicky. He grew up affluent in white Jewish suburbs, with all white friends, you work in a mostly white finance firm what the fuck is your connection to the culture? Hip hop raised you? I think the fuck not. In what world are your suburban white parents listening to hip hop or freely allowing him to listen? You like hip hop, a lot, that is enough.
Eddie Murphy is right!
This is why social commentary never works, especially if you're combining it with something else. One area will always fall short and in You People's case, it's both.
I'm supposed to believe that Amira and Ezra's love is stronger than their parents butting heads and prejudices. Amira looks like she doesn't want Ezra to even touch her. This cannot be the love for which Loving v. Virginia was fought.
Where is the CHEMISTRY! Where has it gone? Stop casting because someone has lots of Instagram followers cast the people who are going to give you chemistry on screen. They do not kiss in this movie. Not once. It is jarring.
I like Lauren London, but be fucking for real. She is not the actress you cast for a romantic comedy or any part where she has to give a performance beyond bougie hood girl. She doesn't have the range. Even when she's doing scenes with other characters it feels like she doesn't want to be there and that everybody was someone else. This movie needed an actress who could come back at Hill joke for joke but also handle the seriousness.
There is a world in which this works, but I don't think Kenya Barris is the one to do it.
What a waste of Nia Long and David Duchovny.

Romantic chemistry between characters
Crafting romantic chemistry between characters can add depth and interest to your story. Here are some tips to help you create compelling romantic chemistry:
1. Develop Individual Personalities: Create well-rounded, distinct characters with their own unique personalities, strengths, and weaknesses. Each character should have their own desires, goals, and quirks. The more developed and multi-dimensional the characters are, the more interesting their interactions and chemistry will be.
2. Establish Conflict and Tension: Conflict and tension are essential elements in building romantic chemistry. Introduce obstacles, disagreements, or differences in values between the characters. These challenges create opportunities for growth, emotional connection, and intense interactions.
3. Show Mutual Attraction: Depict subtle cues and signals that demonstrate mutual attraction between the characters. Use body language, eye contact, and small gestures to convey their interest in each other. Show that they are attentive, responsive, and invested in each other's well-being.
4. Build Emotional Intimacy: Emotional intimacy is crucial for romantic chemistry. Allow the characters to open up to each other, share vulnerabilities, and confide in one another. Create moments of deep connection and understanding that foster a sense of trust and closeness.
5. Foster Shared Experiences: Develop situations where the characters can bond and create shared experiences. This could involve going through challenges together, embarking on adventures, or sharing hobbies and interests. These shared experiences strengthen their connection and create a sense of camaraderie.
6. Use Dialogue and Banter: Engaging dialogue and playful banter can enhance romantic chemistry. Create witty exchanges, teasing remarks, and moments of humor that showcase the characters' chemistry and compatibility. Their verbal interplay can reveal their attraction and spark between them.
7. Incorporate Subtext: Utilize subtext to add depth to the romantic chemistry. Sometimes what is left unsaid can be just as powerful as what is spoken aloud. Use subtle glances, meaningful silences, or actions that imply a deeper connection and unspoken understanding between the characters.
8. Show Vulnerability and Support: Allow the characters to be vulnerable with each other. Show them offering support, encouragement, and understanding during difficult times. By demonstrating their willingness to be there for each other, you deepen their emotional bond and intensify the romantic chemistry.
9. Balance Similarities and Differences: Balance similarities and differences between the characters to create an intriguing dynamic. Shared values and interests can create a sense of connection, while contrasting personalities and backgrounds can add depth and spark to their interactions.
10. Allow for Growth and Development: Characters should evolve and grow individually as well as within the romantic relationship. Give them opportunities for personal growth and allow their romantic chemistry to evolve naturally over time. Show how the relationship challenges and changes them for the better.
Remember, romantic chemistry is a complex and subjective element in storytelling. These tips provide a starting point, but ultimately, the specific dynamics and nuances of the characters' chemistry will depend on your creative choices and the needs of your story.

Yeah I was right and there was no way I was getting the rest of this done without making you all wait another month or two, so I just went to the next good break point. We're officially past the halfway point with Astarion though, so not too much longer before you actually get to see Rolan again!
