HiPOD 30 Sept 2022: The Complexities of Rock
This stunning image gives us a glimpse of rock structures in Aram Chaos. Our goal is to study the complex superposition relationships among the fractured blocks. A digital terrain model can help us to understanding the orientation of the bedding as well. Aram Chaos is at the eastern end of Valles Marineris and is a circular depression created by various geological processes.
Enhanced color image is less than 1 km across; black and white is less than 5 km.

Today’s compilation:
British Rock, Vol. 3 1991 Rock & Roll / British Invasion / Pop-Rock / Pop / Hard Rock / Folk-Rock
This is a great, little compilation of popular tunes from 60s and 70s Britain, although some are far more popular than others, and some of them, I think, are really testing the bounds of what anyone could sensibly consider to be “rock music.” Like, Petula Clark’s “Downtown,” for instance. Somehow, that song won a Grammy in 1965 for Best Rock and Roll Recording, but I defy anyone to actually seriously describe that thing as rock to me. Great mid-60s orchestral pop tune, yes, but rock music? How?
Anyway, I’m burying the lede a little bit here. The absolute best part of this compilation is Donovan’s “Catch the Wind,” because it’s not the very popular version you might be thinking of. See, Donovan released his Dylanesque debut hit, “Catch the Wind,” in 1965 and it was a huge folk smash in both the US and UK. But when Epic Records wanted to release a Donovan greatest hits compilation in 1968, they either couldn’t or didn’t want to acquire the license to use “Catch the Wind,” which was released by Pye Records in the UK and Hickory in the US. So they had him record a different version.
And that version is simply incredible. You may not think so in the early going, as it’s a much softer, slower, and less polished version to start out, and he doesn’t sound anything like he does on the original either, but just you wait for those slow, heavy, booming drums and crashing cymbals to kick in about midway through. They have a way of totally transforming the vibe from a romantic lightness into something truly epic. And that’s now the second time I’ve used the word ‘epic’ in recent weeks to describe a song, and I cringe every time I type it, but there’s really no better word to describe this Donovan recording, unfortunately.
Funny thing is, I actually have that Donovan Greatest Hits album on CD, but it doesn’t have this 1968 version of “Catch the Wind” on it. I guess a license was eventually acquired at some point for the original version and it replaced the 1968 version on future pressings 🤔. But that has me wondering then, when the label that released this British Rock, Vol. 3 comp, Original Sound Entertainment, was putting this album together, did they, too, fail to acquire a license for the original version of “Catch the Wind,” or did they actually want to go with this rarer, and dare I say, better, version? Whatever the case may be, I think having this 1968 recording instead of the 1965 one enhances the quality of the release!
Oh, and the version of Rod Stewart’s “Maggie May” on here is weird too! It has dialogue at the tail-end of it after the music’s done playing that sounds like in-studio banter or something, and I don’t think any of the talking is done by Sir Rod himself. The song itself sounds like regular, ol’ “Maggie May,” but I’ve never heard that talking at the end there before. Anyway, I couldn’t find it on YouTube 😩 .
I think Volume 1 is still the best release that this British Rock series has to offer, but that Donovan song actually makes this one more worth having, in a way.
Highlights:
Rod Stewart - “Maggie May” The Yardbirds - “Shapes of Things” The Zombies - “She’s Not There” The Kinks - “A Well Respected Man” The Searchers - “Needles and Pins” Petula Clark - “Downtown” Donovan - “Catch the Wind”
