#rocket agent butch

Did you know that the agents of team rocket are named after the outlaws jessie james and butch cassidy? Literally just found out today and it just clicked
I did! They do the same for Annie and Oakley and (kind of) Attila and Hun! That's also why I named my old TR ocs Belle and Star heehee. And @pkmndaisuki had a GREAT headcanon that Jessie's mom's dub name would be Jane, like Calamity Jane (who also had a daughter named Jesse), and that's simply truth to me now
Their naming convention in Japanese is also real fun

What the fuck is Team Rocket’s position in the force? By Team Rocket here I specifically mean Meowth’s unit comprising of himself, Jessie, and James (yes he is their direct superior).
In their debut episode ‘Pokémon Emergency’ they seem to be elite mooks at the lowest. They’re actually very competent, taking over an entire Pokémon center in a major city by themselves, and Meowth is actually called Giovanni’s personal favourite. It’s even possible that their white outfits denote something like admin status in comparison to normal grunts.
After Pikachu takes them out the first time though, it’s all downhill. At first Giovanni assumes ash’s Pikachu is some kind of super Pokémon considering it defeated his top agents, and so sends team rocket on the mission to capture the darn rat. But then it just keeps happening. After a while he gets tired of it and decides to finally replace Meowth with a Persian as his personal lap Pokémon. By the end of the Indigo League Saga, even high ranking grunts like Butch and Cassidy seem to outrank them.
Odd thing is, they keep being sent on very high level missions. My favorite example of this is in the Unova Saga where they were literally sent there to set up a new branch of Team Rocket in the region. And for some bizarre reason up until recently they’ve still been chasing after Pikachu. Now what are our options here to explain this?
Option A: Team Rocket gets special treatment for background reasons.
There’s a bit of evidence for this one. Obviously we have Meowth who as far as Giovanni’s concerned is the only Pokémon that can talk and isn’t a literal god. Then we have James who is revealed pretty early on to be from a highly wealthy family, Giovanni probably knows this and even though James has no connection to the family’s wealth he’d probably figure out that they want James back to marry him off. Keeping James around as a bargaining chip when times get rough seems like a solid option. Meanwhile you have Jessie. Not gonna lie I’m kinda stumped with her. She doesn’t seem particularly skilled nor is her family rich in any capacity, girl literally had to eat snow for crying out loud. Maybe Meowth or James just liked her enough for Giovanni to put her on the team??
Option B: They serve as an example.
While they’re technically still high ranking, Giovanni keeps them around to send a message more than anything. At this point Giovanni 100% knows they cannot beat that stupid ass mouse and yet still makes them do it on the weekly. Why? To effectively torture them. Almost every episode they are nearly killed and humiliated. Why? To show other grunts what happens when you fail him. There are holes in this theory though, like how Team Rocket are still occasionally sent on genuine high value missions sometimes.
Option C: They didn’t actually get demoted that far/ actually got promoted
Sure Meowth lost his favourite status (which is debatable anyway) but aside from that and the taunting from Butch and Cassidy there aren’t many other signs that their rank is any lower now. It’s very possible Giovanni recognises their impressive skill in mechanics and disguises and simply doesn’t hire them for Pokémon capturing jobs anymore, and now Meowth and Co are really just doing it for the sport while their real job is covert operations such as the one in Unova. All the movies? They’re reporting all those legendary sightings to Giovanni ASAP. This is the funniest one and my personal favourite explanation.
These are just my ideas but what are yours? Please tell me I need to knoww.

I like that there seems to be a sort of visible progression with your crushes/Venus' partners.
We go from Petrel to fellow Team Rocket member James, to fellow Anime Rocket Agent Butch, to fellow lesser known Pokémon villian Shelly, to fellow pirate Sanji, to fellow Straw Hat Usopp.
Haha, thanks. 😆

Do you think that Butch and Cassidy care for their Pokémon at all? (If you don't consider them wearing the Rage Crowns as cruel.)
I think they do. I had wondered, at times, but I think their most recent appearance confirms that they do at least now. Whether that means they always did or had a change of heart, I’m less sure.
Cassidy had wood carvings of all her pokemon she had used in the past, and the fact that she kept Raticate shows she cares for it as well (my headcanon here is that they weren’t supposed to take it with them when they quit, but Cassidy wouldn’t leave it behind since she cares for it, so she stole it. It seems like it was issued to them by TR in Training Daze, and later on in Journeys, the TRio seemed really worried they were in deep trouble when they lost Grookey, which was a Team Rocket pokemon. That’s my basis for thinking they weren’t supposed to take Raticate.)
Butch’s Meowth is wearing bows. That’s evidence enough - you don’t take time to put bows on your Meowth if you don’t adore it 🤣💯
I think that Butch and Cassidy were somewhat indoctrinated, like I think all TR agents are to a point, while working for them. So I’m not sure if they always cared for their pokemon on the level they do now. My basis for that is actually from Legend of Thunder - Attila and Hun had some really interesting lines to justify what they were doing, like saying what they were doing is no different than pokemon trainers, etc. Now I don’t know for sure, but I don’t really think those are ideas Attila and Hun came up with on their own (cunning as they are, this is not a knock on their intelligence). I think they were parroting back some of the ideals/justification that was drilled into them during their Team Rocket training. I honestly don’t believe that Attila and Hun thought what they were doing was wrong because of how they spoke about it (although Hun obviously has some underlying personal issues, but that’s a rant for another post 😂). I think they thought they were just doing a job they were hired to do, and were able to do it easily because they had been conditioned to believe that pokemon are tools and don’t feel things the same way humans do. I think that Butch and Cassidy were in the same mindset, which is why they were able to do things like subject their pokemon to the Rage Crown despite being shown to care for them later on.
I would have loved to see what happened that caused them to change their way of thinking prior to JN095.

lgbt+ team rocket
headcanons down below bc
they didn’t call it team
rainbow rocket for nothing
— as some of you may know , i am an obnoxious she/they lesbian with a team rocket fixation. so, obviously, for pride this year i had to sit my little gay ass down and and come up with a shit ton of lgbt headcanons for (almost) every team rocket agent. if you follow me on twitter you’ve most likely already seen the thread. if you’re not following me on twitter, go do that. im actually really funny.
dni interact w/this post if ur homophobic or a terf. i’ll kick your ass down to hell.
🌹 jessie and james:
jessie is definitely bisexual. i think she definitely realized it about herself a bit earlier on then james did (pre-teen age maybe?) because she had an . . . unconventional childhood and was more exposed to the idea of being ‘not straight’ unlike james who spent his pre-runaway years in the Worst Environment Possible and his parents give me the kind of vibes that would gasp in horror when their kid even brings up the topic.
jessie brought gay influence into james’ life so quickly after they became teammates because she knew this confused lil magikarp needed some help. shout out to her <3
james is pansexual and *chucky voice* gender fluid. no doubt about it. i like to think that jessie and meowth stayed up late once making james different pronoun bracelets so they’d know what james was feeling like that day. he cried about it for an hour. labeling himself as pan just seemed so right because everyone out there was so hot it should’ve been a crime.
🌼 butch and cassidy:
cassidy (my beloved <3) , like jessie , is also apart of the bi club. the two of them dated years back. they will deny that that ever happened though. it was a . . . messy break up to say the least. Anyways i think she had that ‘oh i like women’ realization amongst going into the training academy for tr. blondie here most definitely took the are you gay test under her covers late at night.
she came out to butch v aggressively. like she was waiting for him to say something the least bit unsupportive so she could clock him in the face. butch just said “really happy for you, cass, but we’re gonna miss the pudding down in the cafeteria.”
butch uses he/they pronouns. currently questioning his own sexuality because yes cassidy is totally the love of their life but uh it’s totally not normal to walk into a pole twice because james was shirtless at the gym.
🪴 atilla and hun:
atilla is a gay man. he screams homosexual i know you hear it. there isn’t a straight bone in his body and yk what good for him. atilla defends the fruit salad gang with his life say one homophobic/transphobic thing and prepare to get well acquainted with his fists, thelma and louise. he plans all the team rocket pride events and they never disappoint. atilla is also guilty of making ‘happy coming out’ cakes for any grunts or new recruits.
hun is pansexual and non - binary. they never really felt like they ‘fit’ into a gender category so after some research, they learned what being non-binary meant and cried out of happiness. they identified as just straight for awhile but then they joined team rocket and giovanni waved his little gay wand and dubbed hun a pansexual. (jk hun realized they were pan after going through a lot of their trainee class)
the two of them are dating and aren’t exactly on the down low about it but they just keep to themselves outside of a few friends.
🌻 wendy, domino, and tyson:
wendy and domino are lesbians. they’ve been together for five years now. you didn’t hear this from me but apparently one of them is planning to propose. (atilla is going to plan their engagement party). the two first met when domino was sent down to HR for a brief counsel session about throwing one of her boots at a grunt. domino was in love with wendy at first sight.
domino and tyson are both trans. domino is mtf and tyson is ftm. the two of them run a little rocket support group for other trans members that meet up once a week. best believe if there’s another rocket being transphobic to another that domino is going to use her gf’s position in HR and her own position as the boss’ favorite to make their lives hell.
tyson is also asexual !! he’s straight and while he still feels romantic attraction, tyson realized during his teen years that seggs Was Not for him and that was okay. he bullies butch and cassidy every time he’s caught them in the act during team rocket parties.

So a little headcanon on my theory of how I think Cassidy and Domino feel about each other?
Domino and Cassidy are both very similar because they're both blonde, are elite Team Rocket members with matching uniforms and are both quite stuck up. But if they know each other, then how do they interact? (This is just fanfiction rather than a theory, but still read because it's fun to think about.)
I don't think that they get along very well, they might even be enemies. In Cassidy's case, she's her second archenemy after Jessie. Both Cassidy and Butch wanted to be Giovanni's favorites but Domino was the only rival within their rank and the fact that Domino was way younger than Cassidy and the fact that she pretty much met her match at that point, is what made Cassidy hate her especially when she acts like she's the favorite instead of her. And it's possible that many other agents and grunts were attracted to her and are quicker to look at her than with Cassidy.
Plus, Domino was assigned to look for Mew or Mewtwo and regardless of who she finds first, is good for Giovanni either way. That's another thing that makes Cassidy really hate Domino, as having someone younger than her taking arguably the most important mission of Team Rocket seemed wrong and insulting to her. Butch and Cassidy's failed missions are definitely part of the problem but they are still good at capturing Pokémon to sell to the black market (I mean just because we only see Team Rocket fail on screen doesn't mean that they always lose because if they did, wouldn't the organization go bankrupt and be disbanded? And wouldn't the boss fire them and possibly kill them? They couldn't just let them go, if we ignore Journeys as canon but that's a subject for another day.) but didn't succeed in the big projects and Domino slowly was about to replace her and Butch.
And vice versa; Domino hates Cassidy too but not as intensely as Cassidy does with her. Most of the time, she'll always come around her acting sassy, rude and condescending, especially after Cassidy thought that she was ahead of everyone else but the thing that she hates is that she has a handsome man like Butch for a partner which makes her feel insecure about herself and Cassidy knowing that, she'll always try to get on her case about it. She sometimes might try to split them up by starting conspiracies and frame them to break them up. But unsurprisingly, it doesn't last even if she succeeded and Cassidy gets the last laugh, causing Domino to grow bitter and take it out on anyone nearby.
In conclusion, I feel like they both see each other as a shady reflection of each other which is why I think that they'd hate each other. Because Cassidy could have other enemies besides Jessie and Domino doesn't seem like the type that anyone would make friends with because underneath that fake cheerful act, she seems like a pretty grumpy, rude and unpleasant person to be around even by Butch, Cassidy, Hun, Attila, etc but grunts would still hit on her which Domino would turn down very hard.
Thanks for reading! What do you guys think? Do you think that Cassidy and Domino would be friends, enemies or just not care about each other? Let me know. XD

Jessie and Cassidy reconciliation fanfic thing
I was going through my notes app just now to just clear out some junk and I found something I'd written like a year ago and totally forgot about hahhaha. I don't usually do fanfics but I guess I was in a writing mood that night. I can't remember why I stopped. I either got stuck, didn't know how I wanted it to end or was just having a hard time figuring out like,,,, the arcs and what I wanted the main focus of the story to be. Anyhow, here it is if you wanna read the set up I made for it haha
Jessie, James and Meowth have once again failed to complete a mission and Matori is TIRED of it. She brings it up go Giovanni who tells her not to worry about them. Matori can’t figure out why Giovanni puts up with them and starts digging on possible reasons why Giovanni would keep them around. She decides to go to HR to find answers. There, she meets Wendy.
“Ah– Matori!”
“Pull up records for Jessie, James and–“, Matori notices that Wendy already has Jessie’s files pulled up and gives her a strange look.
“I see you’re already doing your research on Miss Jessie…”
“N-no! Well, yes. It’s just that Jessie has continuously failed almost all missions she’s been assigned! Not to mention she’s singlehandedly almost made the organization go broke. Well, not really but she still owes a lot of money!”
“And the other two?”
“Huh? Oh yeah them, too I guess.”
“I just don’t understand what Giovanni could possible see in them. They’re not good for Team Rocket.”
“Tell me about it, I’ve been trying to get the boss to fire them for years. But he’s got a real soft spot for them apparently. Tch, to think they were the top of their class once.”
“Hmph, I find that hard to believe.”
“I can’t speak for James and Meowth, but Jessie really was a promising recruit. So much so that when she threatened to quit, she somehow manipulated every exec into fulfilling her demands.”
“Threatened to quit?” The gears in Matori’s head began to turn. Sure Giovanni wouldn’t fire the trio, but if they were to quit, there would be nothing he could do.
“Yeah, she had a falling out with her first partner. And instead of being PROFESSIONAL she wined until she got a new one. Then she proceeded to go through like 10 more partners until James came along. If you’ve ever talked to her I’m sure you can tell she’s not the easiest person to work with.”
“Hm. Perhaps it’s time to switch up some teams.”
“C-can you do that? Is that allowed?”
“I could pull some strings.”
“Isn’t that sabotage?” Wendy asks. Matori shoots her a look.
“Call it what you want, but it’s my job to make sure this organization is successful as possible. Getting rid of some problem lackeys will only benefit Team Rocket. If Giovanni won’t do anything about them, then I will.”
“Matori. You are my hero”
“Are there any potential candidates we could temporarily team them up with? Or members they’ve been known to… not get along with?”
A big, Gengar-like smile creeps on Wendy’s face. “I know just the agents.”
_____________________________________________________________
Early in the morning in Jessie and James’ base, they get a call from Matori. Jessie is already annoyed, knowing who’s calling, but she wakes up her team members just in case it was Giovanni.
“A little early don’t you think, Matori?” Matori composes herself and ignores Jessie’s jab.
“Giovanni hasn’t arrived yet, but I have very important news.” Jessie, James and Meowth’s interests are piqued. “Your success rates have been… less than exemplary. But, you have previously shown you are exceptional agents.”
Jessie is taken aback by the, sort of, compliment from Matori. “So what’s the issue?”
“We have reason to believe that, while neither of you are individually the reason for your constant failures, you are incompatible as a team and you are going to be reassigned to different partners, effective immediately.”
James and Meowth look at each other shocked, and the thoughts going through their head were interrupted by their soon to be, not-leader. “WHAT?! You can’t split us up! We–“
“I apologize for the inconvenience. But this is for the benefit of Team Rocket. I do not have time to argue this. It has already been decided and your new partners have been decided. James, you are to return to headquarters where you will meet your new partner and Jessie, you will remain where you are and your new partner will arrive tomorrow.”
“What about, Me-owth?”
Matori pauses. She hadn’t thought about the cat. “You can decide who you wish to go with. Thank you for your time. Best of luck with your new arrangements.”
Matori hangs up. Jessie, James and Meowth stand staring at the screen, solemn. What doe they do now? Years of working together over, just like that.
“UGH THAT LITTLE FOUR EYED BOWL CUT HAIRED FREAK! I’m gonna do something about this! They can’t do this to us!” James gently puts his had on Jessie’s shoulder.
“There’s nothing we can do,”
James packs up, Meowth has decided to go with James. They say their goodbyes. James and Meowth grab the rest of their things and leave. Jessie is left alone with her thoughts.
_____________________________________________________________
Back at headquarters, we see James and Meowth being led by Matori to her office where she says his new partner is waiting. She talks about how this member is in a very similar situation. They walk in and see short, green hair. “BUTCH???”
“Oh no not you guys!”
“If you’re my new partner, that must mean…”
“Oh no,” they all say in unison.
_____________________________________________________________
Jessie still lying in the same place on her bed. Why was she feeling this way? She’d been through so many parters before. Sure she’d been with James and Meowth longer, but she wasn’t one to get attached. Well, not anymore. In the middle of her thought, she hears the elevator to the base coming down. She gets up and makes herself as presentable as possible (over shirt is off, makeup kinda smeared, boots off). Before she can get her shit together, a pair of white boots click, clack in. Jessie looks up, and the flash of orange, blonde seared her eyes.
“CASSIDY?!”
“JESSIE?!”
“No, no, no there has to be some sort of mistake. I can’t be teamed up with you! I hate you!”
“The feeling’s mutual.”
“I can’t believe I going to have to work with your ugly ass every day.”
“You’re one to talk. Have you looked in the mirror lately?” Jessie turned to the standup mirror leaning against the wall. She was definitely not looking her best.
“You caught me at a bad time!”
“You sure? I recall you always looking this ratty. I guess it has been a while since I’ve seen you, thank goodness," Cassidy said smugly. Jessie was already pissed off.
“We’re calling Matori RIGHT NOW to fix this.”
“Gee, while you’re looking like that?”
“I DON’T WANNA HEAR IT.” Jessie picked up the communicator, which brandished a large R on the wall. Matori picked up.
“Good afternoon Jessie, are you aware that you’re not in uniform?”
“Cut the crap you clod! You set me up with Cassidy on purpose!”
“Ah I see you’ve met your new partner! Hello, Cassidy.”
“Matori,” Cassidy said with a small bow. Of course Cassidy was trying to stay composed. Just another way to try one-up Jessie.
“We can NOT work together. I demand you put me back on my old team!”
“While I’m not one to disagree with higher ups, Miss Matori, I unfortunately have to side with Jessie on this one. You might not be aware but Jessie and I were partners once in our training days. We simply are not compatible,” Cassidy explained as politely as possible.
“Was there a reason for this, incompatibility? I was looking through your records and it appeared that you two were quite the team back in the day. I had assumed that the executives just wanted two top agents to be on other teams with some less skilled trainees.” Both Cassidy and Jessie blushed.
It was true that Jessie and Cassidy were at the top of their class for quite some time. But the reasons for them being split up were quite… personal.
“Listen, we just can’t work together. Try getting that through that helmet head of yours.”
_____________________________________________________________
~aaaaand this is where i got to~
Anyone wanna finish this for me? /j
I can't remember where I wanted this to go. I think I was gonna have Jessie and Cassidy try to suck it up and work together so they don't lose their jobs. They fight Ash and Goh, trying to get Pikachu as usual and quickly fail because of their bickering. They eventually have a heart to heart, wondering where they went wrong back when they were a team. They say a lot of things that they'd failed to communicate in the past and reconcile.
THEN this is where I kinda got stuck on what I wanted the focus/them to me. There was a version in my head where after they reconcile they like,,, make out and start falling in love again (for those new here, I firmly believe Jessie and Cassidy are bitter exes and had a falling out during their training days). After this their chemistry and communication improve immensely resulting in them succeeding to catch Pikachu. Matori comes to retrieve it but Ash and Goh get it back while it's in Matori's hands (making it her failure). And then I wasn't sure how to end this version. Maybe things going back to normal after Giovanni finds out that Jessie and Cassidy are dating and deems it unprofessional. Jessie, James and Meowth are reunited and Cassidy and Butch are as well. Happy ending were things are as they were but now Cassidy and Jessie are on good terms and still together maybe???
The oooother version was centering the story more around Jessie and her inability to keep her partners/not appreciating them. If I went with this I think I'd start off the story differently with her being a dick to James and Meowth (which she is a lot of the time but this time she crosses a line). After the team switch she finds that she really had been taking her teammates for granted. I think Cassidy and Jessie still have that heart to heart but then it's more about how Jessie hurt Cassidy and Jessie kinda realizes that she's still making the same errors currently. They reconcile buuut the both of them still want their old partners back so they hatch a plan to successfully steal Pikachu but ensure that Ash gets it back when it's in Matori's hands. They request that they be paired up with their old teammates and in exchange, wouldn't tell Giovanni that Matori messed up. Everything goes back to normal the end.
I had too many jumbled ideas and because I don't have the attention span to write for more than a couple hours I just dropped this LOL. Just thought I'd share in case anyone found this remotely interesting or entertaining hehe
