Luckily the "what if the SHARK impregnated our ray???" seems to be dying down and bigger news organizations have the corrected information in their articles, but I wanted to share this great blog post by marine conservation biologist David Shiffman that covers both the cool actual science that got overshadowed while actually calling out the facility for how unscientifically they handled it and for the fact that they doubled down (esp since newer media they've put out is softly backtracking and it looks like they're attempting to play it off as a joke that the news misreported. Nope. They put the idea out there like it was as possible as parthenogenesis while calling themselves scientists at a "shark lab")
From the conclusion:
Unfortunately, poor handling of this story has made it likely that we are on track for another year where the most-shared news story about a shark or ray is pseudoscientific nonsense, rather than about their dire conservation needs, their importance to marine and coastal ecosystems, or amazing new discoveries about them. As a longtime supporter of zoos and aquariums and the roles they play in public science education, I am especially troubled by some of the public-facing communications here. If your goal is sharing knowledge with the public, there’s value in gaining accurate knowledge about the subject yourself first. Sharing wrong facts is not “raising awareness” or educating the public, and falsely claiming “anything is possible, don’t trust the experts” is, to put it mildly, not helping the ocean.
It's a great article to drop in if the "omg shark/ray babies???" keeps spreading. Or if you just enjoy niche science drama. The aquarium world doesn't get much of that

Thinking about, like… a very niche kind of sad here, but:
In a world where something magical becomes mundane, and loses all sense of ‘special’, and then is treated poorly for it.
Let’s say you take a magical creature. Take it from the wild, and bring it into captivity- for a little while, it’s a big deal, of course. Everyone wants to see it, and that makes it unhappy. But then, after a while, it becomes… average. You see one shark at the aquarium, you’ve seen them all. You could say the same for a siren.
Maybe the creature makes it worse, without meaning to- snarling and snapping it’s teeth at the onlookers until they’re frightened of it. Maybe it spends all day hiding, because what else is it going to do. It doesn’t want to be here. Maybe it throws itself around in a fit of rage because it wants to be out.
And it hates the attention, it does, but when people stop coming… it gets boring. It gets lonely. It’s the only one of its kind here, and humans are the whole reason it’s trapped, but when nobody comes anymore, it has nothing. It’s left all alone.
Maybe, when onlookers stop coming, the caretakers stop too. It’s often forgotten about, because a well-run facility wouldn’t keep such creatures in the first place. Not like this, anyways. And that just sort of becomes its life. Sitting alone in an enclosure, bored, and neglected like a pet that someone doesn’t want anymore.

I’m trying to embody that proverb or whatever about saying ‘maybe’ and not judging whether or not something is bad before it happens because I have been burned by that before with my brother’s family. They make plans that I’m thrilled for then change them last minute. They make plans that I’m terrified for then change them last minute.
But it’s very difficult to hold equanimity when their truck is broken down, they have no money to fix it, and they’re staying with us. They were supposed to leave tomorrow but it’s looking like it might be indefinite and I’m very scared of that. I cannot live with them.

Summary- Coriolanus returns to the Capitol with his most prized possession.
Warnings- MDNI 18+ Female reader. Technically TBOSAS spoilers. Reader is essentially Lucy Gray. Really incredibly toxic relationship. Choking. Fingering. P in V sex. This is technically kidnapping.
Author’s Note- I wasn’t sure if this was ever gonna actually see the light of day but I am a lush little creature so enjoy. This is part 2 to In the Woods Somewhere but can probably be read as a standalone?? Either way full story linked below :)
Tumblr media
She hates the Capitol. She has hated it since the first moment she set eyes on it. Admittedly, she had not seen much when she first arrived- thrown in a cage at the zoo, paraded through the streets, dragged into the arena- but it had been enough to forge an opinion. She hates the opulence, the disgusting displays of wealth. The way everything of value is flaunted and passed around as if it’s frivolous and easily replaced. How the towers loom over the wide streets, so different from the ramshackle buildings that make up Twelve. The way garbage is swept from the roadside the moment it appears, refusing for even a moment to appear as anything less than immaculate. Everything manicured. Everything perfect. Designed to make an impression, everything about it seems to grab you by the jaw and force you to look at the perfection of it all, nails dug in lest you attempt to look away. A perfectly ripe peach, all sunset pink with its soft, near endearing fuzz, hiding the rotten, maggot-ridden center underneath.
It's enough to make her miss the coal dusted streets of home.
The Snow penthouse- Coriolanus’s penthouse- seems to be the perfect example of Capitol excellence. The perfect patterns built into the tile in the bathrooms, the marble floors that seem to glitter beneath her feet, the paintings displayed behind thin sheets of glass to keep them perfectly preserved. She can see everything from up here, the highest apartment in the tallest building, and the longer she stares out the window, the more she comes to realize she hates to be so high up.
Or perhaps she simply hates that this bay window is the only view she gets of the outside world. The only view she has gotten in weeks.
She had regretted following Coriolanus onto that train the moment she set foot inside it but by then it had been too late. The doors had slid shut as silent as a wraith and she knows her face must have changed as he had half hauled her into one of the padded chairs and made her sit, watching her with his too blue eyes as if he were waiting for her to run. And had she thought she stood a chance, perhaps she would have. She should have. But then she had caught sight of the Avoxes serving them, standing silent and resigned in the corner and knew that should she cause a scene, she would likely share their fate.
So she had sat there uncomplainingly. Let him parade her back home and listened as the lies he told Grandma’am and Tigris flowed off his tongue like honey, hating the bits of truth sprinkled throughout. Holding her hand like a shackle as he told them how they had fallen in love. That he couldn’t possibly leave her behind. That she wasn’t really district, was she? Not like the others, not when she had never truly been one of them, not now that she was a Victor. The perfect lovestruck boy and his pretty little prize. Who could make them part now, separate them so soon after they had found each other? They had fawned all over him- and Tigris over her- so quickly it had made her skin crawl but still, she had said nothing, offering smiles she knew didn’t reach her eyes.
She had continued to say nothing when she heard him tell the Plinths just how sorry he was for Sejanus, that if he had known what he was doing, he would have stopped him. As he told them how dear his dead friend had been to him. Best friends. She had listened silently as the Plinth’s rewarded him for his devotion, handing him the keys to a lavish new penthouse for little more than his supposed loyalty, for loving their sweet, kind Sejanus. The keys to her self imposed prison.
Coriolanus had never told her how the Capitol had gotten its hands on the jabberjay that damned his lone friend to the hanging tree but he didn’t have to. She has had plenty of time to put that story together herself, sitting alone in his locked apartment while he attended the university and worked under Doctor Gaul planning for the next Games.
She is a Victor and though perhaps that should mean something, it has become clear that it doesn’t. Though people watched her Games, though she made an impression, the memories of those in the Capitol are fleeting. No Victor is remembered following their Games. They are congratulated for their victory and sent home on the first train, never to be seen or heard from again. They fade from the public eye quickly, forgotten before the next moon, and perhaps she would have been as well had she not caught Coriolanus’s attention. Had he not been her mentor, so enamoured with her that he would cheat to save her.
She blames herself just as much as she blame him. Curses herself for not being able to see behind that perfectly curated mask he presents to everyone who looks at him, for being distracted by his pretty blonde curls and handsome face. Had he been ugly or cruel or anything other than deceptively kind, perhaps she could have escaped all this unscathed. Gone back home to Twelve without having him falling behind her like some forgotten shadow. Even if she had lost the Games, at least then she would be free of him. But instead she had been little more than a moth drawn to a flame, her wings now singed and leaving her an easy meal to the predator who first spotted her.

Had a dream I was on a field trip at school or something (I’m a 26 year old adult and not a student anywhere but hush) to a shitty roadside zoo that had all sorts of issues (a group of bears and leopards living together, the girl feeding the lions did so wearing tattered scrubs and placed the meat directly in front of them), and I got in trouble when the zoo director asked me what I thought and I started going on (respectfully) about AZA regulations
I also mentioned that I felt that their piebald long-furred hippos were likely a result of unethical breeding practices

Brian Thomas x Tim Wright Headcanons
This was kinda written erratically cause I'm sleep deprived lol, enjoy!
-They first became friends when they were assigned as dormmates in College-
-They started talking and hanging out more ( kinda hard not to do when you live in the same place), and it didn't take long for Brian to realize that Tim had a lack of social experience-
-So he takes Tim everywhere, Aquariums, Zoos, Museums, restaurants, places Tim didn't go to often as a child-
-He doesn't judge Tim for not knowing social cues or how certain things work, even if Tim asks what would be an obvious question to most people, Brian will reply with that sweet smile and a helpful answer-
-Anyone who ostracizes Tim for how he act or behaves will most certainly be getting more than a mouthful from Brian-
-In return, Tim also teaches Brian many things, and sticks up for him when Brian won't stick up for himself-
-He introduces Brian to tacky horror flicks, and gets Brian interested in dark literature and woodworking, things Brian would come to like a lot!-
-If anyone is being a d!ck to Brian (*cough cough* Alex *cough cough*), Tim will not hesitate to let that person know how he feels and demand an apology from them-
-They both do lots of acts of service for each other, Tim makes lunches for Brian, and Brian always likes to do hard labor like mowing the lawn / fixing their car for Tim ( even though Tim can do it himself and always argues so)-
-Brian confessed to Tim at a Frat Party, while they were on the roof of the house, looking at constellations in the sky-
-While Tim has been pining for Brian for awhile, he felt reluctant at the start but pretty quickly opened up to the idea of dating Brian-
-They're both head over heels for each other-
-They date privately for at least a year though, cause y'know, it's Alabama-
-The first person they come out to is Jay-
-Then eventually Jessica, Amy, Alex, and Sarah, in that order-
-While on school vacation, they take trips together across the state-
-They always stop for roadside attractions, and take their time looking at everything they see, they're in no hurry-
-Brian takes a lot of photos of Tim, on his laptop he has a whole folder dedicated to photos of him-
-Whenever Brian takes Tim out on date, he is the sweetest gentleman ever-
-One time he even put his coat down over a puddle for Tim to step on-
-Tim got so flustered over it and could only mumble things like "you didn't have to do that" and "oh stawp it you"-
-You know they're gonna spoil each other on Christmas, Birthdays, and Valentines Day-
-The only difference is that Tim starts crying because he has never had anyone show him so much love and kindness before-
-This definately throws Brian off the first time it happens and he's so worried that Tim didn't like his gift and offers to get him something better and all that-
-They rent and watch movies a lot together, the people at the movie store know them as "the two guy friends that always come in and sometimes smack each other's ass"-
-Tim eventually opens up to Brian about his past and his condition, which further motivates Brian to do good in his Psychology class so that he can help Tim somehow ( don't forget he's a Psychology major girlies)-
-Tim likes the sound of Brian's heartbeat, whenever they cuddle Tim is always on Brian's chest-
-Brian doesn't mind because he loves being able to run his fingers though Tim's smooth hair and being able to kiss his temple-
-Tim is also very warm too, and Brian is cold all the time so needless to say they cuddle a lot-
-Brian's main way of showing affection is through physical contact, and Tim is suuupper touched starved so it's a match made in heaven-
-Tim thinks Brian is like the Sun, always bringing warmth and happiness with him wherever he goes, while glowing with a radiance that brings you comfort and makes you feel secure-
-Brian thinks Tim is like a pearl, a coveted rarity that everyone desires, standing out in a crowd of oysters. If they were ever to get married Brian would totally propose to Tim with a ring that has pearls in it-

Having a crocodilian in our house is unethical. But is it unethical to visit the crocodilians in their house? Can I ethically go see a croc chilling on their home??
Depends.
Do the crocodilians live somewhere like here, in a river with shallow banks? Is it nighttime specifically?
Do not enter the crocodilians' house, observe only from a distance! ❌❌❌
Tumblr media
Is the crocodilian at a roadside zoo or other ill-reputed establishment? Do not patronize! Avoid establishments that have baby alligators for visitors to hold. ❌❌❌
Tumblr media
Are you visiting the crocodilians' home while taking care to be mindful of the nature around you, avoiding feeding them and getting too close to them? Perhaps taking part in a reputable nature tour?Have fun, that's an ethical way to see crocodilians! ✔✔✔
Tumblr media
Is the crocodilians' home an AZA-accredited zoo or licensed santuary? Have a great time visiting them! ✔✔✔
Tumblr media
In short:
Getting too close to wild crocodilians or patronizing unethical establishments: ❌❌❌
Observing wild crocodilians from a distance and visiting ethical zoos and sanctuaries: ✔✔✔

Good news for animals in captivity in Canada!
Tumblr media
The Jane Goodall act was introduced to the Canadian senate originally in 2020 and again in 2022. It represents some of the strongest legislation for animal protection in the world for species and contains new legal protections for captive big cats, bears, wolves, seals, sea lions, walruses, certain primates, and dangerous reptiles, such as crocodiles and giant pythons. If it passes, the bill will:
Phase out elephant captivity in Canada. Elephants are complex and intelligent animals that require large social groups and often do poorly in captivity, so this would mean an effective end to the practice nation wide.
Ban new captivity at roadside zoos for big cats, bears, wolves, seals, sea lions, walruses, certain primates, and dangerous reptiles. No more private owners profiting off of wild animals kept in unethical conditions!
Require permits for individuals and organizations to acquire or breed big cats and other species.
Create a new designation for Jane Goodall Act ‘animal care organizations,’ including zoos, aquariums and sanctuaries. An effective form of accreditation to make it easier to support appropriate care for captive animals.
It would also support action against wildlife trafficking and improving the conditions of animals currently in captivity. Read more about the act here.
As of June 8, 2023 the bill has passed its first vote in the Senate.
