Elevation Is at Sea Level (Death Valley National Park)

Elevation Is at Sea Level (Death Valley National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: At a roadside pullout along California SR 190 with a view looking to the northeast to to a nearby sea level sign. This location is in Death Valley National Park. What's this image, I pulled back on the focal length to include some of the nearby surrounding landscape with the plant-life, as well as a backdrop of ridges and peaks of the Amargosa Range.

A Quiet Hillside in Kansas
I went to Coronado’s Castle just outside Greensburg Kansas recently and this quiet beautiful cemetery was next to the castle entrance. First I should explain that the castle was built during the 1930s as part of a WPA project and Coronado had nothing to do with it other than to use his name. The cemetery is along a rolling hillside and even had a few cattle grazing at a distance.

Hermes Deity Deep Dive
This was a requested deep dive on Hermes, you can request a deep dive on my ko-fi for $5!
Hermes is one of the 12 Olympian Gods and is known as the herald or the messenger of the gods. Often depicted wearing winged shoes and holding a staff or wand, he was known to be the patron of heralds and messengers.
As with many deities, Hermes is the god of many things, such as poets, athletics, luck, travel, trade, omens, animal husbandry, and thieves. This multi-faceted god was often conflated with the Roman Mercury, though there are some key differences.
With that, let’s get to know Hermes!
Parents and Siblings
Zeus (father)
Maia (mother)
Lovers or Partners
Theses are the more common lovers found referenced with Hermes.
Aphrodite
Brimo
Daeira
Peitho
Persephone
Penelopeia
Children
These are all of the cited children I found, there may be some discrepancies depending on which myth you read and who tells the story.
Evander
Pan*
*The primordial god Pan has many origins, being the son of Hermes and Penelopeia is just one of these origins. The next three are thought to be aspects of Pan that may also be personified separately. Pan may be a tripartite deity, this will have to wait until Pan gets his own Deep dive.
Agreus
Nomios
Phorbas
Hermaphroditus
Abderus
Autolycus
Eudoros
Angelia
Myrtilus
Palaestra
Aethalides
Arabius
Astacus
Bounos
Cephalus
Cydon
Pharis
Polybus
Prylis
Saon
Epithets
The Greek gods have massive lists of names, here are some I’ve found on multiple lists.
Atlantiades
Argeïphontes
Cyllenian
Kriophoros
Notes
One of the more popular myths of Hermes is the myth of him stealing Apollo’s cattle as a baby. Hermes was freshly born, escaped his crib and stole his half-brother’s herd of cattle. In order to avoid getting caught, Hermes plays some devious and clever tricks, though the tricks he plays depends on the myth-teller. At some point on his journey with the cattle he finds a tortoise whose shell he turns into the very first lyre. Inevitably he gets caught by Apollo but the sun god is so charmed by the lyre that he allows Hermes to keep the cattle or at least forgives him.
Not only this myth, but others depict him as a trickster who enjoys a good prank.
Hermes was known to be the patron god of Arcadia as he was born in Mount Cyllene in Arcadia according to Homer.
Philostratus places Hermes’ birthplace in Olympus, however.
Hermes is also a psychopomp, a traveler between the realms of the living and dead who aides souls headed to the underworld.
It’s possible that Hermes’ name derives from the Greek herma which meant “heap of stones” or “cairn”. These heaps of stones, or cairns, were roadside markers for travelers and may have also acted as small shrines for the deity.
Hermes was notably charming even as a baby, considered a darling of the gods (ref) where many of the deities in the pantheon would teach or entertain young Hermes.
Hermes was said to have invented wrestling and racing.
One of his more prominent cults was in Attica during the Classical period. By this time he was considered to be the god of travelers and sailors.
Thoth was another deity conflated with Hermes.
Hermes in many myths and traditions is seen to be a liminal deity. Not only is he able to travel between the underworld and overworld with ease, but he is often depicted as both young and old, as a mediator between god and man, and as a dream bringer.
It’s possible that this ties into his involvement as an initiator for young adulthood.
The Hermea were festivals held in honor of Hermes.
Hermes’ staff or wand, the caduceus (staff with two snakes wound around it), is often mistaken for the Rod of Asclepius (staff with one snake wound around it).
Modern Deity Work
Explanations are placed next to each item on the list.
Correspondences
Rocks/Stone/Crystals
Copper - I couldn’t find a source for this but I’ve seen it on multiple posts now and my friends who follow Hermes cite this as well so it is worth a mention!
Gold
Silver
Rocks - Just rocks, specifically stacked rocks from the roadside. Cairns were
Herbs/Plants
Crocus flower - based on the myth where he accidentally kills Krokos and turns him or his blood into a flower.
Strawberry Trees (botanical name Arbutus unedo) - he had been nursed under one according to some myths.
Animals
Hare - he placed the hare amongst the stars as the constellation Lepus.
Tortoise - created the lyre out of a tortoise shell.
Cattle - stole Apollo’s cattle as a baby and is known to be a god of cattle rearing.
Hawk - he transformed two men, Hierax and Daidalon, into hawks.
Symbols
Caduceus - the name of the staff or wand he is depicted as carrying.
Shepherd’s Pipes - he created the shepherd’s pipes.
Winged shoes - the type of shoe varies by myth or artistic depiction but the “winged” part remains the same.
Winged hat - he is often depicted wearing a winged hat.
Traveler’s hat - he is often depicted wearing a traveler’s hat.
Offerings
Shepherd’s Pie - This is purely based on the fact that it’s similar to shepherd’s pipes and I find it amusing, I’m sure a god who enjoys jokes would enjoy this too but that’s my bias.
Koumara - I found this post by @grecowitch explaining that while strawberries are often cited as offerings for Hermes, this misconception comes from the misleading name of the “strawberry tree” which actually produces fruit called koumara! That said, I imagine Hermes wouldn’t be upset at receiving delicious strawberries.
Animal skins - Hermes
Coins - he is known to be a patron of not only merchants but thieves!
Other standard offerings to Grecian deities are olive oil, honey, cheeses, various fruits, milk, and candles.
Acts of Devotion
Write poetry - he is a god of poetry.
Travel - he is the patron god of travelers.
Learn how to play the lyre - he created the lyre.
Play sports - he is known as a god of athletics and during his festival days people would play sports.
Play pranks - I won’t advocate for harsh pranks, personally, but he is known as a trickster so do with that what you will.
Pray to him - pretty standard devotional act.
Go to the gym or otherwise exercise - he has been cited as the patron deity of gyms.
Build a cairn - DO NOT STACK ROCKS IN NATURE as it disrupts the natural environment! However, feel free to build one on your porch or in your house with rocks you may already have.
Celebrate Hermea - I was unable to find a set date-range for these festivals. Some suggested around the beginning of August, possibly due to his conflation with the Irish god Lugh’s holiday Lughnasadh; others suggested May 15 due to the Roman god Mercury’s holiday Mercuralia. That said, he was known to be worshipped during other holidays in Greek tradition alongside other deities.

Diego Javier Luis is assistant professor of history at Tufts University in Massachusetts. He is the author of The First Asians in the Americas: A Transpacific History (forthcoming, 2024).
Edited by Sam Haselby.
Cape Sebastian in Oregon perches above two forested declivities along a rocky patch of the state’s southern coast. Travel there today, and you are likely to miss a roadside marker that reads:
Spanish navigators were the first to explore the North American Pacific Coast. Beginning fifty years after Columbus discovered the Western continents, Sebastian Vizciano [sic] saw this cape in 1603 and named it after the patron saint of the day of his discovery. Other navigators, Spanish, British, and American, followed a century and a half later.
Standing before this sign, I winced rather predictably as I read ‘discovery’. But simmering beneath my displeasure with this word was a deeper conviction that Sebastián Vizcaíno’s voyage was, indeed, significant, though not in the ways that the sign suggests. Thousands of miles to the east, in Seville, the old centre of the Spanish Empire, I had stumbled upon Vizcaíno’s voyage in the dusty volumes of treasury records for the port of Acapulco, Mexico. Buried in line after line of winding, Baroque script were curious notations – ‘chino’ and ‘japón’ – next to the names of seven sailors that Vizcaíno had recruited for his voyage up the North American coast. To the tune of carriages rumbling through Seville’s cobbled streets and the crinkle of centuries-old pages turning, I read the names again and again:
Antón Tomás Antonio Bengala Francisco Miguel Cristóbal Catoya Agustín Longalo Lucas Cate Agustín Sao
Seven Asian sailors – entombed by an archive and forgotten by human memory – had sailed with Vizcaíno to what is now Oregon. Where in the chronology of Asian American history could these sailors fit? Flip to the beginning of most books on Asian America, and you will find no content earlier than the 19th century. You will be in the world of the Gold Rush, the transcontinental railroad, indenture, and the San Francisco and Los Angeles Chinatowns.
These seven names transport us to a different world, a different timeline, a different Asian America. These sailors’ presence off the coast of Oregon predated not just the entire Asian American canon but also the founding of the United States and even of the Thirteen Colonies. The histories of the first Asians in the Americas do not take place in the nations born from the fires of British colonialism but, rather, they guide us to a region rarely considered relevant to Asian American history: Latin America.

Plastic Hearts - (21)
<<<Prev Next>>>
---
Brothers.
Also it's a short chapter cause I couldn't find much time.
---
He fit the googles around his eyes and fastened the biker gloves around his wrist. This was it. This was the great adventure. It just didn’t feel like it though.
He got onto his motorcycle, when Allan joined him as he took a seat behind him. Ken was glad that he had company, doing this task alone would have been more nerve wracking.
But he needed to get his head in the game, he had to, so he tuned out his thoughts as he heard Allan’s clear instructions. So he rode off, watching the darkened sun begin to rise as the early morning dust storm had begun to settle. The journey to the mount of great faces was simple enough. It was a well known spot, so the roads were wide and the signs were clear.
But as he rode, he would catch a glimpse of those posters again or run down Nomad vehicles or an abandoned gun by the roadside. He had to remember there was a darkside to this land now that it's innocence had been ripped away.
His grip tightened around the handle but he was grateful for his helmet, no one could read his expressions. Even without his helmet most people couldn’t decipher him well.
Well, except for you. He found it comforting, jus thoughts about you, the soft memories in his head seemed to offer him peace without fail.
He felt Allan tap his shoulder but he knew the reason for, the four Barbie faces loomed over them. All of it had been sculpted from pink rock but now it looked like concrete.
He brought the bike to a stop and parked it under a cover, to keep its presence hidden such that it was not stolen. The sun was now high in the sky signifying the change in time that only half a day was left. All the way through the drive was mostly silent, Allan seemed too stressed to hold a conversation and so Ken left him to his comfort.
“So it gets a little tricky from here.”, Allan spoke as he read the map and Ken removed his helmet, the warm dry air greeted him.
Allan was engrossed in reading the different coloured marker lines on the map he held in his hands, trying to find the path that could lead them to the big X. But as he observed him, he couldn’t help but take notice of the similarities.
When he was at the school, he would often see brothers come walk in together. The older boys would come by to drop off their young brothers in their class for their first day and as days went by even though these little kids showed up on their own, it was evident to see the comfort they had knowing their brothers were around.
But it wasn’t just there. At grocery stores, in the men’s department of a clothing store, at restaurants and bars. Siblings seemed to have a special connection and he had heard you ask him if he contemplated about those parts of life he never got to experience, he could now say that he was jealous of those who had a sibling.
Having parents was one thing but getting to have that brotherly bond was often an intrigue for Ken.
Allan showed up in his life much like a younger brother, if he drew comparison to the real world. One day Ken woke up to find that he had now had a designated buddy who could fit into his clothes.
But when he was going through a rough patch, Allan was the only one who cared after. What was more special was that there was only one of him and in the vast crowd of all the Kens who lived here, he felt fortunate to be the one to connect with him.
“Thank you for doing this.”, Ken stood his ground, not wanting to waste this second, this moment.
The surprise was evident on Allan’s face but it softened as he waved his hand as though it didn't matter.
“We’re friends. Don’t mention it.”, he smiled.
“No we’re not.”, Ken shuffled the helmet in his hand and observed the smile fade from Allan’s face.
“We’re more like brothers, if you’ll have me that is.”, he smiled, half expecting him to say no. But instead he was greeted by a hug.
“I’ve always hoped we could be.”, Allan said joyfully.
Ken completed the hug and his heart felt whole. He had a family now, he had always longed for love his entire life. And though since meeting you he had found his dream girl, his exposure to the real world had opened up a new wound. A wound that had slowly crept onto him like a passing shadow. He longed for a childhood he could never get.
But, that gapping hole was filled. He too had a brother now.
“Alright, lead the way.”, Ken chuckled as he pulled away because if he didn’t he was sure to shed a tear.
Allan stood taller, more confident as he held up the map towards the light before he placed in on the ground and began to fold the edges. A few seconds later, he held a paper heart that had rearranged the whole map such that it revealed the pink line was the only path that led to the proper destination.
Instead of entering the rocky pass, Allan began to walk into a different cavern opening. Ken followed and the moment he stepped in he was engulfed by utter darkness.
“Good thing we’ve got flashlights.”, Allan chuckled as he switched on his light and Ken halted immediately. He was one step away from falling off the edge.
He slowly shifted back as he caught up to Allan, this part of Barbieland felt too real. The rock formations and crumbling boulders, all this was beginning to show clear signs of wreckage.
“Has this place always been unstable?”, Ken questioned.
“According to our geotechnical books, this place is our foundation. With the deterioration though, it must have been the first to get hit.”, Allan explained.
It was simple, time was running out, the rocks chattered and grumbled around him, this whole area looked like it was going to cave in.
“It should hold up for us. Based on where we are, it looks like we should be close.”, he heard Allan speak but Ken could feel the hair on the back on his neck begin to rise.
Out of instinct, he pushed Allan away as loose stalactities came crumbling down where he had stood a second ago. Ken’s heart was in his throat but he heard Allan reassure him he was alright from the other side.
He let out a breath.
“That was a close call.”, Allan joked again but before Ken could react, the gap between them got filled with rocks that poured down from above.
Now they were separated.
One with the map and the other without.

Forensic science - the "CSI stuff" is one of the least tested areas of the sciences there is, and deserves an overhaul. It does nothing but break peoples lives apart with false courtroom testimonies. The CSI effect means that people believe it is real when it's mostly bullshit.
Stop believing the courts every time an expert testifies. (Or at all. Most judges are cop-loving bootlickers who will gladly send you to your ruin if it speeds up their case log.)
Bite mark analysis is indisputibly fake and wrong, but courts still use it. The very first case was later proven to have had the results faked to fit, but any results after are also
Travel analysis (Where a person has been) from shoes is impossible to prove
Fingernail evidence is easy to fuck up, or confuse the courts with because many cosmetics and foods may distort findings
Hair analysis, hard to prove beyond a reasonable doubt, as it's interpretive. It uses a shitty test that can false positive hairspray or shampoo to frame people as alcoholic or drug-using (which should not be a crime). It also is used to this day. Look up Motherisk Lab for how garbage the science can be!!! None of the lab members were ever trained. This practice is same all over the world. The science is pretty bad
Fingerprints. Both not unique to each person, and the results easy to fudge. Super interpretive and hard to prove it was them or another with a similar print. Partials used as evidence too often imo
Roadside drug tests cops give? Eaaaasy to set off that mouthwash residue, aspirin, or even chewing gum can get you a positive.
DNA is also interpretive. Sure, you may be able to match it with someone, but what markers say about that person is nothing but a maybe. This is doubled or tripled as a maybe for animals - animal DNA testing is absolutely terribly regulated
Actual science welcomes challenge. Forensics often bars it, and stands by faulty labs and science that often was just imagined up as giving results by a random guy a century ago

Roadside Memorials
This article is not a long read, or listen (both in the download above). No matter your opinion on roadside memorials, I had never taken a side, the words are meaningfully from a different point of view. Community Viewpoint: Honor the roadside memorials As I write this, with about one week left in February, some trees, bushes and daffodils have already begun to bloom around Danville. — Read on…
