I heard a lot of things I wanted to share earlier today, but haven't reached a non-work computer until recently and was distracted by the airdrop news so I had to talk about that first. Most of the things that stood out to me were in the Democracy Now podcast, but I'll be linking the headlines from their website, which has text versions of the articles instead of just audio.
The Intercept: New York Times Exposé Lacks Evidence to Claim Hamas Weaponized Sexual Violence Oct. 7: Shortly after the first Hamas attack, the New York Times published an inflammatory article about systematic rape by Hamas soldiers. It initially intended to have an episode of The Daily (its podcast) about the topic, but the podcast's fact-checkers found that the article's writers had bent a lot of truths and their sources were often questionable at best; the needed rewrites for honest reporting were so comprehensive that the episode script was scrapped entirely. Goes over the ways in which the reporters manipulated facts and opinions, the NYT not really acknowledging the conflict, and how heavily it impacted international response to Israeli actions, especially by the US government.
From their Headlines page, the bold is their titles and the reset is my summary or additional references:
Defense Sec. Austin Refuses to Draw Line in Sand for Israel After Food Aid Massacre in Gaza - DS Austin is grilled by a congressmember and still doesn't commit to anything; notable is that he cites a death toll that is probably accurate to the estimates of real death, but not accurate to the confirmed deaths and so the numbers had to be later walked back by the Pentagon.
Washington’s Largest Union Backs Democratic Vote for “Uncommitted” Ahead of Primary - UFCW is joining the movement that Michigan got rolling. I talked about it more in a recent addition to this post, if you want to know more about which states are organizing to do the same.
Lebanese PM Says Gaza Ceasefire Would End Conflict on Its Border with Israel - Lebanon has been bombing northern Israel for a while now; this is just the 'if you leave Palestine alone, we'll stop sending explosives your way' message that's been broadcast for a while.
There are a number of other stories going on that aren't getting a huge amount of coverage on most platforms, like Texas's wildfires, or are just too complex for me to summarize (they have a longer article on the border visit and policy debate), but these three stood out to me, which is probably why they're the first ones mentioned.

Brilliant. Congressman Ro Khanna brilliantly and expertly gets to the heart if the truth immediately , directly pinpointing the clear reality of unethical and disproportionate Israel and US conduct in Palestine during a congressional hearing on Thursday 29th February 2024, questioning US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin.

News Article Here
On Friday morning, Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) will kick off a four-hour live stream from a Washington rooftop overlooking the White House with some of the biggest political Twitch and YouTube live-streamers. The creators include Clara Sorrenti, known online as Keffals; Steven Bonnell, known online as Destiny; and Ian Kochinski, known online as Vaush. The agenda says they will discuss issues such as climate change, affordable housing and student debt relief. But the significance of the event may be what it says about the way Democrats and Republicans are seeking to engage with potential voters online. “The new generation of Americans aren’t getting their news from MSNBC, CNN or Fox,” Khanna, who represents Silicon Valley in Congress, told The Washington Post. “That’s just not how millennials and Gen Z consume news or get inspired. One of the ways they’re making decisions is engaging with streamers. It’s the equivalent of talk radio or cable for the new generation.”[cont. on MSN]
Better than expected. Ro Khanna converse with Emma and Ian along with other popular YouTubers/streamers is something I never thought I'd see. I would love to see this sort of stuff continue; especially cause this gives insight to disaffected youths online, instead of the same politicians and talking heads beating around the bush in every topic and receiving light punches.

What’s Next After The Midterms? Ro Khanna & Robert Reich Discuss
Democrats will retain control of the Senate. Republicans captured the House.
There was no red wave. But there was no blue wave, either.
What does it all mean? I sat down with my good friend Congressman Ro Khanna (D-CA) to discuss.
Aside from a few remaining contests (and the upcoming Georgia runoff), the results of the election are in and one thing is certainly clear — Americans chose not to make any more waves this time around. Despite voters embracing stability over chaos and election denialism, many outstanding questions remain.
Is Donald Trump over? Should Joe Biden run in 2024? What should Democrats do in the lame-duck session before Republicans take over the House?
These are just a few of the hot button issues that I cover with Congressman Khanna — a member of the House Progressive Caucus who represents Silicon Valley, and someone whose name has been floated as a potential future presidential candidate.
I hope you’ll enjoy our conversation as much as I did.

Bernie Sanders, US Progressives Meet Lula Ahead of Brazilian President's First White House Visit
The Congressional Progressive Caucus, of which Sanders is a member, said Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's election "has given hope to democratic and progressive movements around the world."
Tumblr media
Ahead of his first White House meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva met Friday with members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, including Sen. Bernie Sanders, who said topics of discussion included the far-right threat, combatting the climate and environmental emergencies, and supporting workers.
"I enjoyed a productive meeting this morning with President Lula of Brazil and his cabinet," Sanders said in a statement. "Our countries share many challenges, including the threat of right-wing authoritarians who seek to undermine democratic institutions in both countries."
"I am very impressed that in his short visit to the United States, Lula chose to speak to the AFL-CIO," he added. "In that regard, we discussed ways to build an economy that serves all people, not just the wealthy and large corporations. We also discussed ways to advance workers' rights and build strong unions."
Three other members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus—Chair Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) and Reps. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.)—also met with da Silva.

Democrats quietly move to succeed Biden
From the November 2, 2023 article:
The ambitious, next-generation Democrats all support Biden's re-election — but they're drawing battle lines for the next race for the White House.
The early jockeying is also a hedge against Biden, 80, having a health scare or deciding not to run for re-election before the Democratic National Convention next August, several high-ranking Democratic officials tell Axios.
The article goes on to describe what these Democratic politicians are up to:
Governor J. B. Pritzker (Illinois)
Governor Josh Shapiro (Pennsylvania)
Representative Ro Khanna (California)
Senator Cory Booker (New Jersey)
Governor Gretchen Whitmer (Michigan)
Governor Gavin Newsom (California)
Vice President Kamala Harris
The article goes on to warn:
If Biden were to leave the race before the end of this year, there likely would be time for candidates to get on enough state ballots to determine the nomination.
But if he were to exit after Jan. 1, the nomination fight more likely would go to the Democrats' convention in Chicago because candidates wouldn't be able to get on the ballot in enough states....
In that case, Biden likely would have some delegates and could ask them to support a candidate — but the delegates would be free to support who they want.

“I will vote no on this bill that bans aid to children in Gaza who are dying of hunger. Forget the politics & procedural jargon. This is a test of first principles. The America I believe in must never be indifferent to the man made starvation of children.”

From the article:
The takeaway from progressives to getting their clocks cleaned by Black voters in two subsequent national primaries shouldn't be that they haven't done enough class reductionism. And yet, instead of explaining to their own flock that the preferences, outlook, and leadership of communities of color should be centered, they appear stuck trying to lecture Black voters about why they should come on board with class solidarity, something that inherently centers white grievance.

From the April 20, 2023 column by Art Cullen:
Khanna was at Des Moines Community College’s Urban Campus April 13 to tout an effort with Google to train about 20 students per year in digital technology, with stipends to acquire specific computer skills so they can work remotely in the tech industry.
This follows on his work with DMACC and Iowa Central Community College to school students in digital coding in Jefferson. He said that program is going well, with about a half dozen students matriculating annually into jobs from Silicon Valley that do not require them to leave home.
...
It doesn’t hurt Khanna’s political ambitions to be a Democrat who is received warmly in Greene County, Iowa. He is among the few members of Congress who actually understand why Iowa switched from Obama to Trump: It’s all about the economy, stupid!
The reason he understands is because he keeps showing up in Ankeny and Jefferson, and West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Which is why he could be the Democratic presidential nominee in 2028 — he gave a damn about rural America when the rest of the Democratic Party told us to get lost.
