honestly love the parallel of gina and nini having these massive opportunities and seeing how ricky responded to it but most importantly how they respond to ricky’s support.

with nini she didn’t like how ricky was so clingy to the relationship and didn’t like that he would ever entertain the idea that she would stay for him. even though ricky was very supportive and all he said was that he wished she could be there with him. as much as they loved each other, they just weren’t compatible.

with gina she wants the complete opposite. she wants ricky to be clingy and love her selfishly (within reason of course). funny enough, gina is actually the perfect recipient of the text he sent nini in season 2 because that’s exactly what she wanted to hear from him. they are so incredibly compatible in the way they love each other and they deserve that type of love so much.

and i think for ricky it was a lesson for him to know that he should never stop being himself in his relationships because the right person would love him the exact same way he loves them. with all his clingy and dorky traits.

the creator of hsmtmts released a script from 2019 showing that rina were supposed to kiss in the og script and not only does this refute the “ricky and gina were platonic/ricky didn’t like gina in s1” narrative rinis and pws love to say but it also proves even more that rina was always planned like the creator has been saying since s3.

no rina was not planned from the very beginning but they in no way happened because olivia decided to leave/jolivia irl drama (their breakup was written before olivia blew up and before drivers license even came out and there’s evidence for this). he’s said multiple times that he planned on them getting together at some point after filming the car scene because of their chemistry and that their chemistry changed the trajectory of the show for him. he’s been saying he’s wanted to write towards them since all the way back during s1 era as well.

this script proves that even more and the fact they most likely changed it to a cheek kiss because they wanted it to be slow burn like the creator has said multiple times. making them kiss that episode wouldn’t work for a slow burn and the narrative of their relationship. it would also make them look like a plot device for rini which is what they were supposed to be originally before the creator realized he wanted rina to be endgame.

such a good script to release for all these reasons. showing us that their relationship was always written as romantic and WHY they changed it; to fit their slow burn better.

in honor of people saying that gina doesn’t deserve to be gabriella because they aren’t similar, I’m gonna do a post celebrating gina + showing exactly why she’s fit to play her. I wanna say that these arguments are pointless because it doesn’t matter if gina is like gabriella or not because at the end of the day she's acting. however, gina and gabriella are cut from the same cloth so onwards!

starting with the obvious, at the beginning of hsm and s1 respectively, gabriella and gina are new girls who have moved to east high. not only that, but they've moved schools several times with their single mother, never staying in one place for too long

gabriella encourages troy to do musical theater. after singing with him on new year's eve and then coming to east high, she sees troy's potential and passion for the theater and pushes him to do it. with gina, though her intentions are initially cunning, it's her words that keep ricky in the theater club, not his desire to win back nini.

gabriella is pretty resistant to forging close relationships because of being used to moving all the time, but meeting troy helps her to get out of her shell. the same happens with gina and ricky

both gabriella and gina have incredibly impressive accolades in their past (gabriella with scholastic decathlon and gina starring in annie as a child)

people often say that gabriella is very sweet and almost passive, the latter of which does not describe gina at all. however, gabriella never allows anyone to walk over her. additionally, gina is very sweet and I would argue is the kindest character on the show. below are just some examples of that.

the way that gina is with ricky deserves a whole post on its own, but the way she encourages his talent constantly throughout the series, supports him and helps him process his feelings surrounding his mom, and is generally one of his biggest supporters is so sweet I love their love :’)

her baking gluten-free cupcakes for the theater kids at ashlyn's thanksgiving party and for opening night, despite flying across the country in the latter scenario <333

speaking of s1 opening night, stepping into the role of taylor to help kourt's anxiety despite not being an east high student anymore

constantly affirming ashlyn when she cast doubt on her casting as belle

joining kourt and ashlyn to audition to counter lily's bullying, even when she could've auditioned alone and accepted lily's words that didn't disparage her. also her defending all of her friends!

helping to calm everyone down during the storm and organizing their response to ensure that they'd be okay

this one is kinda sad, but putting her hopes and dreams aside (starring in the musical, living with her mom, choreographing the show, her feelings for ricky) to make her friends and loved ones happy

planning carlos's quince for him and choreographing a whole dance as a gift for him

helping ej with the morning show thingie + encouraging him about himself post-duke

connecting nini with her music producer brother to help her friend with her music career

the grace she extended ej during their relationship throughout s3 (and with the whole date scenario in the s2 finale), including organizing a camp prom-posal for him

the mentorship role she kinda fills for emmy

supporting ashlyn throughout her ensemble crisis

changing the camp movie night to kourt's favorite film to soothe her anxieties and homesickness, helping to fix the stuff backstage for let it go after channing messed with it, and just really all of kourtgina's friendship

there are probably a bunch of other examples but gina is an angel and I'm sick of people acting like she's some awful person for the couple of things she did in the first half of season 1, things that were no worse than all the other main characters' actions. wrapping this up by saying that gina deserves to play gabriella because she's incredibly talented and will knock the role out of the park.

I dont think there will ever be another ship that gives me the buzz that Rina gives. This was a real slowburn where I loved the characters as individuals and together as a couple. They both had relationships that failed but they overcame obstacles to stay together because they both wanted it. They grew together. They support each other. They want each other. They LOVE each other.

Gina going “Ricky intrigues me and I don’t get intrigued” and then her reaction to his audition makes a lot more sense now. The fact that she felt this strange connection with him right from their very first conversation. The fact that she is not only the reason he even ended up being Troy, but did not leave the show the first time and went back on stage the second time, just adds to the fact that were always meant to be. More than once she helped him be the Troy that he is now. One way or another their paths were always meant to cross.

okay just rewatched the last episode of season four of hsmtmts and noticed something I hadn't noticed before that's making me scream and kick my feet in the air...

so you know at the end of the musical when they're taking their bows and singing "high school musical" iconic yes? and Ricky and Gina take their bow and they look at each other as they are holding hands as they're singing "memories that last forever." you can particularly hear Ricky's voice over everyone else's as well as Gina's. now whether this was on purpose I don't know, but remember at this point Ricky and Gina never really got to talk about Gina going to New Zealand. The bomb was sort of dropped on Ricky and then he dropped the bomb on Gina that he knew and they didn't have time to talk about it or resolve anything. because yes, while Ricky wanted his beautiful amazing Uber talented girlfriend to follow her dreams and be the big star he knows she is, he also wants her for himself. he doesn't want to let her go yet. It's not selfish, it's high school. but anyways, I just think it's so special that even though, at this point, rina is going to have to go their separate ways and leave so many people heartbroken forever, they're thinking about forever. Ricky and Gina are singing to the memories that they made this past year and a half, basically, with each other (as well as with everyone else, but for the sake of this post I'm sticking with Gina and Ricky) and also, in my mind, to the memories that they'll make in the future. at this point they don't know when, they have no idea when they will reunite, but I can imagine they feel like one day they will. they're certain. because the stars won't keep them separated for long. and so I just think that's so special and so meaningful and deep and amazing. that little detail about forever - when the song Ricky's about to go sing to her is basically about forever - melts my heart. The details put into this series - whether on purpose or on accident, I don't really know - are incredible. so yeah, just thought I would point that out.
