hey. if you're a live tapes enjoyer, do yourself a favor and go listen to the 03-01-2024 Grace Cathedral solo show tape. i listen to a lot of live tapes and this has hands down the most breathtakingly gorgeous acoustics I've ever heard. the way the church echoes is absolutely ethereal and the performance is haunting and beautiful. this tape is one for the books, for sure.

time to talk about a single mountain goats line again!!!! this one means so many things. the first time it’s a cry for help, it’s a “this place doesn’t feel like the home it should be” and god does that hurt. i’m in a place like that right now. the physical place where i am should be home. i live here. i sleep here, eat here, cry here, but i’m alone here. and there is very little home in this little room, despite how hard i try.

the second way we hear this line, it’s a confession. it’s delivered with sheepish guilt. “i am healthy, i am whole, but i have poor impulse control. and i want to go home, but i am home.” it’s admitting that the people you’re with aren’t quite what you want yet. you know you should but part of you still longs for whatever home was for you. an ex-lover, a childhood bedroom, a family. but that doesn’t Get to be the home you have right now. You want to go there, but it’s not the home you have, because the home you Have has to be in front of you.

the last way i hear this line is a declaration of love. we are filled with riches and wonders. we are treasure vaults wrapped in soft skin and pain and when we learn how to see the beauty in each other people start to look a lot more like home. we want to go to a home; but when we’re being held we are home, and it is finally enough. it’s enough to be held and loved sometimes. and that can be home too.
