If you want women’s restrooms to exist for the reason of safety, I believe that makes advocating for not just gender neutral restrooms, but having the option of a single-stall one (like most neutral restrooms are). If the concern is security, safety, and privacy, a sign with a skirt will not give you that. Restrooms are such a terrible anxiety-inducing place because of the people in there, so why not the single-stalled option?

Hi there. I’m an architecture student working on my thesis project, which is focused on PUBLIC RESTROOM DESIGN.
I don’t just want to do what I think is a good idea in a restroom, but want to make sure I’m getting a wide variety of opinions on restrooms to make it better for everyone, not just me. So I’ve made this survey.
I would really appreciate it if you guys would fill this out and maybe force your friends and loved ones to fill it out too; I want as much data as possible
Thanks!

"I don’t mind paying to use public restrooms because the paid ones are cleaner!” Then you clearly do not experience the profound frequency that can make paying-per-pee an itemized travel expense akin to an extra meal in my food budget, nor the level of urgency that has prevented me from ever turning down a restroom opportunity when I need it, which is constantly. We are not the same.

Hey.
Tumblr media
You see this box right here? As someone who has to clean public bathrooms quite regularly, stop fucking putting toilet paper in here. These bins are for things like used pads, tampons, hell, diapers if you have them (though the trash cans you throw paper towels in have more space for those things I don't think most people would like to see them), you know, all the things you can't flush down a toilet.
Stop filling it up with used toilet paper, the one thing you're meant to put down there. It takes up space for the things that are supposed to go the bin when people do this regularly, which means emptying it out more often, which wouldn't be necessary in the first place if more people actually used them for their intended purpose.
Repeat after me: toilet paper. Goes. In the toilet. That's why it's called toilet paper.

Minnesota just signed adult changing tables in public restrooms into law!
This is a HUGE win for the disabled community, and I hope other states follow in our footsteps soon.

Based on experience, as a guy, just assume any working class white man over the age of 60 does not wash their hands after using a public restroom.

I see restroom signs like this a lot when I’m out traveling, vacationing, whatever. And it’s a gender-neutral restroom, right? You have whoever whenever walking in and out of your hot sauce and novelty coaster shop, and it seems like a generally good idea to just convert both of your single-person restrooms in an older building to serve anyone because maybe sometimes 2 guys need to pee at once. I saw these much differently after gender transition. I see them as a form of folksy, “Safe Allyship.” Like maybe the political climate in Downtown Prescott is not such that you can openly support queer customers without inviting angry Conservatives to start a fight with you in your shop. A sign that’s explicitly a “GENDER NEUTRAL RESTROOM” would get at least one Fox News dronemind a month to cry foul that the shop is too woke for their delicate sensibilities, or worse commit indirect or physical violence upon the shop owners. They’re out there, particularly in historic or more rural areas. Signs like this serve the same purpose, speak to the same people, but can mask their politics with folksy humor.Very few militant bigots will bat their eyes at a restroom sign with two cartoon aliens in shorts on it that say “Human.” I see you guys, you shop owners, you dive bar proprietors who can’t be kind by threat of violence. Thanks.

can someone explain to me why so many places that have “all gender/gender neutral” restrooms actually just replace the women’s restroom with that then leave the men’s restroom as is?
