Ethan Isn’t Entirely Made Of Mold & Technically He’s Alive, Eveline Is Just Being A Brat: A Tumblr Essay
Okay, this isn’t really an essay, I just wanted to present my case on this matter. I’ve seen more than one person question how Ethan was able to have a kid or do any of what he did if he’s a dead mold man, and...well, the thing is, I don’t think we were meant to take that comment from Eveline literally. She’s ten, she’s definitely trying to mess with Ethan’s head (probably has some hard feelings after Dulvey), so her being hyperbolic makes sense. So, with that in mind...what is Ethan by the end of Village?
Not Dead, But Resurrected: This one more comes down to common sense than any explicit canon backing, but like...the dude wouldn’t be able to eat, sleep, and father a child if he were dead-dead. He was definitely killed in Dulvey, but the mold infection was enough to resurrect him, just like it did Jack Baker (like fifty times, dude exploded his own head and came back). The only difference between him and the Bakers is that he wasn’t a cannibal serial killer, and that’s most likely because he wasn’t under Eveline’s influence.
Not Literally Mold, But A Mutant: This one does have some canon backing. So, mutants do exist in the Resident Evil Franchise. I’m pretty sure most of the enemies you fight are straight up mutants (see: Birkin/G as a fun example). There ARE enemies made entirely of mold, to be sure, as described in the second R&D report you can find in Biohazard:
The term "organism" is used loosely here; strictly speaking, they are superorganisms formed of countless mycelia. [...] The researches have been calling these super-organisms the "Molded"; made of mold, and also molded as in "shaped". The name has a certain elegance to it.
So they’re fully formed from the mold, but they’re not the only mold-based monsters, and the others are completely different. The language around the Lords, for example, always speaks of implanting and mutation from there, not being made whole-sale from the mold, and Eveline herself is a hybrid, created from human DNA and the samples provided by Miranda. So, with Ethan being more like them, it’s safe to say that he’s a mutated hybrid of the mega/mutamycete and his own human bits.
Also like. He literally wouldn’t be able to have a human child if his body was just mold, so with that in mind...yeah, he’s definitely a mutant hybrid. He’s just lucky to have stayed sane and not turned into a dragon or some shit. (Probably helped that he was living a normal life and not in a bizarro gothic horror cult or under Eveline’s mind control.)
In Conclusion: Mold Dad Not Really Mold, And Also Alive Not Dead (For A Little While, Anyways).
