༻ The Golden Ratio ༺
Another deleted scene from Chemistry which I just had to recycle. May you all enjoy this fluffy, non-yandere take on Dottore and the science of love (≡^∇^≡)
♡ 0.9k words under the cut ♡
Tumblr media
“Zandik, look over here! Aren’t these specimens remarkable?”
“Yes, they are,” he replies dismissively.
You frown, turning away the patch of Rukkhashava Mushrooms. Your classmate is still tinkering with the Ruin Guard, completely absorbed in his research.
“Liar. You didn’t even look at it.”
He doesn’t even try to deny it. “Can’t you see that I’m busy? If you allow me to finish my research, I can promise my full attention later.”
“But that’s what you said with the last sample,” you point out. “Is it too much to stop and admire the scenery for a few minutes? You are utterly rigid.”
Though you wouldn’t have fallen for him otherwise.
Zandik gives you an unamused look. “And you are too carefree, though I may recognize such childlike curiosity as befitting of your Darshan.”
You give him a bright smile. “Thank you for the acknowledgement!”
Was that a compliment or an insult? Either way, Zandik has been observing you!
As of now, your research expeditions have yielded little progress in your relationship. Your crush remains distant, focused on his work, at odds with your research approach. Still, you are thankful for the opportunity to witness him in action. To spend time with him.
Your own research is sufficient. You sit on the grass and watch Zandik, committing his visage to memory. After a few minutes, he breaks the silence.
“I am intrigued,” he says, “by your attitude to my research. The Sages always scold me whenever I express my fascination in these ancient machines.”
His research notes are neatly arranged beside his tools. The pages are marked with meticulous reports and detailed drawings. His enthusiasm practically bleeds into the paper.
You approach him, uncaring of your close proximity to the Ruin Guard.
“Well, I must disagree with them. No matter how dangerous those machines can be, they are still something to study. One might claim they are no different from my research specimens.”
“Ah, yes. Your little plants and animals,” he replies, glancing at your research notes. “And why do you research those subjects, may I ask?”
“Should there be an important reason?” you ask, adjusting your Amurta scarf. “It’s because they’re beautiful. Simple as that.”
Beautiful, mysterious, vital to this world.
“I did not take you for the poetic type,” he muses. “Anything can be deemed beautiful from one’s subjective perspective.”
“That is true,” you agree, “like your interest in the Ruin Machines. But objectively speaking, there are mathematical theories which can explain our prevalent standards of beauty. The golden ratio, for instance.”
“Ah, yes. That old thing.” A confident smile appears on his face. “I’ve read a thesis about the golden ratio in relation to facial aesthetics. Apparently, I am a good example.”
“Not a surprise. Many people find you handsome.”
“And what about you?” Zandik resumes eye contact, scarlet eyes tinged with amusement. “Do you agree with that conclusion?”
Your cheeks flush. “W-Well…yes, since you claim that your face fits the golden ratio.”
“That is an inadequate basis for your answer.” He stands in front of you and caresses your cheek, preventing you from looking away. “Why don’t you personally test that hypothesis? I will do the same with your face.”
He’s so close.
“All…all right.” You stay still and focus on his face, making the mental measurements.
His facial proportions are more or less congruent with the golden ratio. There are some details which may serve as basis for a counterargument, however.
His bangs obstruct your complete analysis. You’ve always adored his messy hairstyle, those stray curls which complement his character. You know from previous interactions that his hair is soft to the touch.
There is also his boyish, sharp-toothed grin which is equal parts manic and mischievous. His calm, close-mouthed smile is more aesthetically pleasing, but it lacks his unabashed ardor. Nevertheless, you are captivated with both versions, especially when those smiles are directed at you.
His eyes. They are like red suns, always bright and intense. There is a fascinated gleam in his gaze whenever he comes across something new.
It is beautiful. All of him.
His voice is what brings you back to reality.
“I am done with my measurements,” he announces.
“I…I see.” You give him a nervous smile, acutely aware that he is still touching your face. You’re blushing; can he tell? “So am I. Why don’t you go first?”
“You are beautiful.”
What?
Zandik taps his fingers on your cheek, tracing lines on your face. He’s close—too close, your flustered expression trapped in his ruby eyes. His expression is serious yet neutral, as though he is merely studying a specimen.
“A…according to which theory?” you stutter. “The golden ratio?”
He smiles at you. “I am speaking from my own personal opinion. If the laws of nature say otherwise, I must disagree and prove them wrong.”
A specimen worthy of his full attention.
Words fail you. What can you possibly say after receiving such a compliment?
Ever the diligent scholar, Zandik lets go of you and returns to the Ruin Guard.
“That is all I have to say,” he says. He picks up a rusty cog and takes notes. “And what of your observation? Do you find me beautiful, ______?”
You remain in your spot. “...Yes, I do.”
His tone is smug. “Objectively or subjectively?”
Honestly, why did you fall for someone like him?
“I’m not sure,” you admit.
“I see.” Zandik gives you one last smile, a knowing twinkle in his eyes. “Let us continue this experiment later. I am not one to be satisfied with ambiguous results.”
This was originally written for the second chapter of Chemistry, but it felt too “close” for Dottore and Assistant! Darling’s early relationship. So I just edited and moved it to the last few chapters. But I couldn’t waste the lovely thought of Dottore’s s/o falling for the parts of him which aren’t considered beautiful by the golden ratio, so here we are~
Anyway, I hope y’all enjoyed this deleted scene ft. college crush Dottore ૮ ˶´ ᵕˋ ˶ა

7 important tips and advice every PhD student should know
PhD is considered the highest level of qualification and is not for the faint of heart. The difficulties and frustrations are real. You are constantly looking for motivation to keep up with your hectic schedule.
We understand your situation, and to assist you, we have compiled a list of seven essential tips and advice that will come in handy during your PhD journey.
These tips and advice are backed by scholars and industry experts based on their experience, and if you are in the early stages of your PhD, you will be astounded by the information.
So, without further ado, let’s get started:
Read a lot
Read, read, and read some more. This will be a very useful step in creating a research roadmap. Read as many research papers as you can on your chosen topic.
It will provide you with in-depth knowledge of your subject, what previous researchers have done, and how you can begin your own research. By reading other people’s work, you can learn what has already been done and avoid duplicating existing research.
Aside from reading old papers, remember to keep an eye out for new developments also in your field. All of this reading will help you gain a thorough understanding of your chosen subject.
Write more
When you’re reading this much, you should also be writing. Write down your progress, new discoveries, and any other important information you believe is relevant.
It is always preferable to begin writing as soon as possible. Because it will ultimately assist you in writing your thesis. Writing on a regular basis will help you hone your writing skills.
It may appear to be a daunting task, but with practice, you will notice that the quality of your research paper will improve and you will take less time to complete it.
You don’t have to write every day, but try to write at least three times a week, if not more.
Be positive
PhD research is a long and time-consuming process in which you must constantly work on finding new solutions in your field. As a result, if your research paper is not accepted or people do not support your idea, you may become demotivated.
However, keep in mind that these are all part of the process. You will not always be successful. So it’s okay if you don’t achieve your goals sometimes. Concentrate on the good things you have.
Divert your attention to topics that interest you, surround yourself with positive people, take short breaks, and engage in activities that you enjoy.
PhD may appear to be a difficult journey but believe in yourself because you will succeed and your efforts will be rewarded.
Don’t isolate yourself.
PhD candidates frequently become so engrossed in their work that they completely isolate themselves from the rest of the world. They worked hard all hours of the day and night, but the feeling of missing out never left them.
However, stressing yourself may harm your health, which is ultimately detrimental to your research. So take some time to unwind. Connect with others who share your interests and have a productive discussion about your topic.
It will provide you with new perspectives and allow you to connect with people in your field.
Do an internship
An internship can provide you with valuable insight and a deeper understanding of how research is conducted in other environments and what tools are used.
An internship can help you learn a lot. You can broaden your network with other researchers and learn a lot of details. It can be a fantastic way to gain a thorough understanding of your topic.
Reach out to people.
Building a network is critical regardless of what you do. A valuable network can provide you with endless possibilities. Don’t waste the opportunity to meet a lot of influential people and industry experts during your PhD.
Create a strong network for yourself. Reach out to people and have a good conversation with them. Make the most of your opportunity, as a worthwhile network can help you not only in your career but also in your life after your PhD.
Appreciate your small wins
Many students lose interest or productivity halfway through their PhD studies. It can happen because they have unrealistic expectations of themselves.
You don’t have to make the same mistakes in your PhD. Set attainable goals. Appreciate your small victories because they are also significant. You must accept the fact that you will not always be successful. You will have failures, but they will be temporary, and with consistency, you will be able to achieve your goals.
As a result, it is critical to keep yourself motivated and productive by focusing on your progress.
Conclusion
Pursuing a PhD is a little challenging, but if you believe in yourself, you can achieve your doctorate dream.  The only thing that matters is that you need to stay consistent and focused. Read a lot and try every possible method to learn about new discoveries in your field. Take advice from experts in the field, and your fellow researchers and stay motivated.

Aaaaaaa OlliAllu crushing on each other aaaaaaa 🥺💖💕
I wanna know everything about the timeline! 😍
Tumblr media
Thanks for asking!! My favourite topic!! 🥺
So just as a disclaimer: the following is based on nothing much but my vivid & delusional imagination (except that it's all totally true and real 😌)
Behold,
💖 The Olli/Allu Love Story Timeline* 💖
(*according to theflyingfeeling / this is gospel truth okay don't fight me)
Pre-Aleksi-joining-the-band / Timebomb -> becoming friends 👨🏼‍🤝‍👨🏻
So I imagine that before Aleksi joined the band, he and Olli were friendly but maybe not super close (or as close as Aleksi may have been to Joel/Joonas/Niko). They respected each other as musicians and, as time passed, figured the other is a pretty cool dude to hang out with and fun to play shows with 🤝 By the time Aleksi joined the band, they were already good friends 😌
(I love how from the very beginning it was not unusual to spot them next to each other in pictures (yes yes I know about their team short/team tall arrangement in pictures, humour me a little here though)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Can we also cry about this (irrelevant to Olli/Allu (unless Olli wrote this)):
Tumblr media
"our lovely friend" 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
*
2021: UMK / Eurovision / post-Eurovision -> developing the crush 💕
They started working on Dark Side pretty much right/around when Aleksi first joined the band, right? By then they all, including Olli, had spent more and more time with Aleksi in the studio as well as on stage before he officially joined the band. During the UMK/Eurovision project, however, they were suddenly working together way more intensely (especially after winning UMK), so I like to think that was when their friendship deepened and they found out just how much they have in common (e.g. all their nerdy mutual interests). They probably started to chat more just the two of them (in the UMK video 15 facts about Blind Channel, Aleksi mentioned calling Olli (and always catching him biking lol)) and sort of just drifted towards each other so that they were frequently seen together (the screencap on the right is taken seconds before they stop to stare each other in the eyes, sorry I don't have a gif of that) 💕
(and no I haven't done extensive research on how much more often they were spotted together in comparison to how often they were spotted with other band members just sshhhhhh it's not like this is a doctoral thesis)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If I recall correctly, they also did some interviews together, at least this one where they look like they had just woken up from a nap with lots of cuddles (and maybe even some shy kisses for fun (because sometimes good friends make out for the lols, right??), I mean come on, they look so soft 🥺💓
Tumblr media
They also sat (and partied) next to each other during the finale, and shared that one looooooooong hug I mean COME OOOOOON they don't want to let go of each other 😭
Tumblr media
Of course, we cannot forget about the tipsy/drunken cuddles during that interview (and in the hotel room a bit later, source: I just know it in my heart) 💞
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(remember also the other, less known drunk interview that showed Olli staring at Aleksi dreamily 🥺)
I think around this time they also got a bit flirty with each other for the first time? At least if one is to interpret the way Olli "mocks" (lovingly <3) how Aleksi says his middle name in the hotel room IG stream they did (and of course we're going to interpret the heck out of that, that's why I'm writing this whole thing for 😌 (I still crack up at Niko's "I thought it was Mattson" every time though lol))
Another highlight from 2021 was obviously the moments they shared in the Posse shower stall we have been discussing lately, which show exactly how comfortable they are with each other 😩
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, I can't remember for sure and I can't find the ask for reference, but was it the summer of 2021 when Aleksi had to miss a show (because he was sick or something?), and reportedly Olli had been all quiet and gloomy that day, to the point that Niko pointed it out on stage during their show, telling the audience (jokingly) that they're sorta worried about Olli because he has barely said a word all day? I remember talking about this with someone and they had videos/pictures/?? about it too, but until I have some actual evidence of this, you're just gonna have to take my word of it 😌 In any case, it goes to show how much they meant to each other already back then 😭
To conclude, I think the year 2021 was the year they slowly developed their (mutual) crush, but without fully realising what was happening. There were some cheeky cuddles (perhaps even sleepy/drunken kisses) and friendly teasing which was totally NOT flirting although it totally was, they weren't just ready to admit it and butterflies in the stomach that they tried to ignore; they're fairly certain they like each other platonically and nothing more, even though they can't help but smile a little more brightly when they get a text from each other and they miss each other a little too much when they're apart... 💕

Spring/summer 2022: the US tour / the EU tour / the summer (tour) -> getting together 💞
Let's start off with this poor-quality gif I just made, for no particular reason except that I want y'all to look at how cute they are 🥰
Tumblr media
According to Niko (source: just trust me alright, I think he said it on twitter but naturally I can't find anything rn), as I'm sure many of you know by now, during the US tour Olli and Aleksi were often the last ones awake in the tour bus, drinking Mountain Dew and chatting away about nerdy stuff. I think this is when they really grew closer and I can easily imagine that around this time the first thoughts of "what if..." entered their minds 😳
Maybe they sometimes ended up just staring into each others eyes lovingly, before realising neither has said anything for a while (and it was sort of awkward when they did realise, but they just laughed it off), or maybe there were accidental/absentminded touches; maybe they both just felt so warm and cozy in each other's company, and even though they were both getting a little sleepy, they kept on talking for a few more moments because they weren't ready to let go of the moment and "burst the bubble". Maybe they were joking around and being low-key flirty, and when they finally went to bed, they'd be going out of their minds in their bunkbeds, trying not to think about all that too hard.
I like to think that eventually they got more daring, sat more closer to each other, and suddenly the small touches weren't accidental anymore. They could have an entire conversation with Aleksi's hand on Olli's thigh or vice versa and it would feel so nice and so natural 💞 There may have been a few kisses too, just for fun and because the vibes are right, and maaaaaaybe they don't really talk about it that much, but they definitely can't wait to try that again somewhere a bit more private 👀
Speaking of which, we also know that they roomed together at least once ("Little Man asked first"), and by some inexplicable coincidence, the two of them were the only ones in the band who got ill during the tour? Huh, that's strange 🤔😌 So I have a reason to believe the US tour was when they first got together, even if they thought they were just fooling around back then 🥰
(can't think of anything in particular to say about the EU tour in the spring, but we can look at these pictures nevertheless 💗_💗)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and then 🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭😭😭😭
Tumblr media
Getting emotional receiving the gold records in Ruisrock, hugging each other the first thing because who else would they hug, what more prove do you even need to see how much these two love each other 😭
We also know that in the summer 2022 Olli stayed at Aleksi's when he was in Helsinki (not sure if this happened every time he was in the capital but there were a few occasions), I think they were spotted grocery shopping together or something? They also participated in this interview together, providing us moments such as
1) the two of them sitting tightly in Aleksi's (?) car,
2) hearing that they had spent the night together watching old tour videos,
3) Olli commenting on Aleksi's outfit ("I warned you..." = he had been looking at Aleksi's dick through his pants 🥰 (at least I assume it's about the romper that showed the outline of his peepee? he says "last summer" but I don't think his outfit in the 2021 summer tour was as controversial? it was literally just a black t-shirt (with a white long-sleeve underneath sometimes) and black trousers, so I assume he means "the summer that has passed" (the interview took place in August))
4) Olli's surprise when Aleksi says he, too, would like to collaborate with Skrillex and Aleksi teasing Olli about "having thought about Skrillex last night" (don't worry Aleksi, I'm sure he was thinking more about you than Skrillex 🥺)
To sum up, in the first half of the year 2022, they got together for the first time and formed a special kinda bond, slowly falling in deep, soft love 🥺💕
*
Autumn 2022: the EU headline tour, the London & LA song-writing camps -> honeymoon time 💖
...yeah, I wonder what happened during the EU headline tour 😳
Tumblr media
(they fucked. a lot. rough. this is the truth.)
...and before they left for the honeymoon song-writing camp, they did the cutest thing that any two humans have ever done in the history of the universe 😭
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean 😭😭😭😭 are y'all still crying about this?! because I never stopped 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 you can just imagine them grocery shopping for studio snacks together and they spot this card (I do wonder what the picture on the front is) and have this grand idea and aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa the giggles when they wrote the card and gave it to daddy!Johnny AAAAAAAAAAA I'm going to explode if I think about how unbelieavably cute it all is, is this not something you do with a very special bro of yours?! I cannot handle it 🥺💕
In London they went on a date on Olli's birthday (yes I have decided the others weren't there 😌) and Aleksi took the most boyfriend picture of him because they're boyfriends in love 🥺
Tumblr media
In LA we know they shared the bed (source: you can't prove they didn't!!) and looked very very soft and boyfriends; in conclusion, they were on a honeymoon 💖
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*
2023: boyfriends boyfriending 💓💞💕💖💗
And yeah, that sort of brings us to this year and the way they are now, so cute and sweet and boyfriend and touching each other for no reason thinking they're being discreet and playfighting and giggling at each other's joke like they're the most hilarious person that ever lived and smiling sweetly when they see the other has replied to their text and being so fucking cute in Aleksi's twitch streams without Olli even physically being there and getting engaged for real and just 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
Of course there are soooooooooo many moments over the years that I also want to mention but can't really pinpoint in the timeline, such as all the clothes/accessory-sharing and adopting each other's style (cuffed jeans and tucked-in shirts) and the wine drinking while listening to soft music and cuddling in meet-and-greet pictures and looking so happy about it too and in general always sitting/standing next to each other in pictures ("but they don't always--" YES they do always, don't even fight me about this 😤), the evidence is right there in front of your own two eyeballs if only you choose to see it and live like a king the way we do here in the Olli/Allu Delulu Land ✨
Finally, let me do a random photo dump to further illustrate my point if you're not yet convinced for some reason (and to reach the 30 pictures per post limit) 💖
(sorry for no sources, if this is the reason I go to jail I'm going happily)

It's no surprise to anyone, I'm sure, but god it's insane how like all of Antarctica is just named after the same guys and their boats.
Your Ross Dependency, your Ross Ice Shelf, your McMurdo Sound, your mcfuckin' Cape Crozier - the most easterly point of Ross Island. Mountains named after their ships, Ancient Greek Concept of the Personification of Darkness and Howling Dread.
Either that or monarchs. It's just insane. I kept thinking that, watching The Terror, how have these people already fucking named everything? They don't even know what's an Island yet, and it's still all Prince Edward This and King William That. It's the same in Antarctica, of course.
Anyway: Back when I was doing my ESCI paper on Antarctic fieldwork* I didn't think much of it while I was doing my map memorizing and recreations (a requirement of the course), but I DID finally kind of crack and write this mammoth essay about the expedition of Sir Douglas Mawson, who was, predictably, trying to find the South Pole. He did not, of course, manage it and the two guys with him died, one of them named Ninnis has the glacier he died on named after him.
The thesis of this essay was that Mawson had no business being there besides imperialism and that it was ridiculous to regard people as heroes for willingly putting themselves in situations extremely likely to kill them for the sole purpose of claiming land. Doing this in Antarctica is not as egregious as doing it in the Arctic, of course, as there is no indigenous population to steal from down there especially, but it's still goddamned bonkers. And yet Mawson was so resoundingly lauded simply for not dying that he was at one time on the Australian $100 note.
Tumblr media
One point of interest is that while Mawson was criticized for not having his party wear snow shoes (which would have distributed their weight more evenly and made them less prone to falling in crevasses) he absolutely did beat the cannibalism allegations. He was simply too pious a man for anybody to believe he'd've done that. Mertz, the third man in the party**, died either of eating dog livers (concentration of vitamin A will kill you if not careful), or of a broken heart from the loss of Ninnis (listen, I have read the diaries, okay. It was a very detailed and exquisitely researched essay.)*** Like, exploration is so romantic, romanticized, it's so easy to do it, and yet it's like bonkers stupid that there was literally no reason for them to be there but to claim the land. To make the "discovery". To manifest destiny. I've got no point here, I was just remembering how wild it was to remember all the different things named Ross all the way back in my Antarctic Fieldwork 101 paper. And how The Terror was basically made for me in a lab lol. *The school I went to had a really close relationship with Scott Base, and while I'd never be allowed to work down there - people who work down there have multiple graduate degrees, not just undergrad with field assistant training, but I was interested as hell and I learned a lot. Like for example how to put up a Scott - there's that name again - tent in a snowstorm. Remember Scott's expedition? That was the one that had Cpt. Oates on it. Of "I am just going outside and may be some time" fame. **No relation to Shackleton's third man. Another time. *** Also I wrote a song for the banjo about it. This was a long time ago and no records of the song survive.

Thoughts on Frankenstein and the trans experience
Hi! So some months ago I finished my Final Degree Thesis on monsters and the theory behind why queer people tend to relate with them easier than with heroes on the pieces of media that features them and I've been sitting on my thoughts on Frankenstein and how it is a source of identification for both the trans feminine and the transmasculine experience.
My credentials are I'm trans (non binary)! and also I've been researching this for like. Four years. So if you want to read the part of my disertation about Frankenstein and gender (I also have a lot written about otherness, the concept of the monster, queer narratives and vampires but this is not the post for that) you can find it under the cut! (be warned its gonna be long because it's straight up copy-paste from the disertation)
If vampires are a mirror for sexuality, there is little doubt that the “monsters” that haunt gender are Frankenstein and his creature. That is hardly a stretch, since he is an Adam —he calls himself that at one point (Shelley, 1818, p.69), recognizing himself as the creature casted out of the Garden of Eden unfairly by Victor, who is at the same time a creator God and the Eve who rebelled against “natural order” making them both fall out of grace—in a stolen body made out of someone else’s expectations of what a “man” is supposed to look like, how he should act  and think and move (how he should perform his gender, that Victor seems so utterly obsessed with, and then devastated about until he became the monster his creator wanted him to be); rejected by the one who created him, forced by society to stay hidden, unable to ever “pass” and misunderstood (Fox, 2017).
There is something interesting about this book, and it is that different sources of identification for both transmasculine and transfeminine people’s experience with gender can be found within it.
On the one hand: the creature, an individual whose creator conceived as “male”. But then again, gender is a performance, gender is something taught (Preciado, 2018, p. 27) and nobody told the creature how to dance to that rhythm. Instead, the creature was explained how the world works through Safie’s feminine lens, listening to the lessons that were given to her about how to behave and understand everything. And then, looking at the image reflected in a pond, the creature realized they were not the same Other because, unlike in hers, beauty will not buy society’s acceptance in that case.
Still, there is an attempt at getting affirmation from the old man of the De Lacey family, the grandfather that, because of his blindness, is not able to see the creature and have prejudices based on the appearance that is offered but only on the words spoken and the kindness shown. But unfortunately, the other De Laceys are sighted individuals —although blind because of their prejudices—, and what they behold is someone far too big and too coarse. A threat.
That is very much the same risk transgender women face when going out as people who may or may not conform to society’s view of gender presentation, because as it has already been demonstrated, transgender people who are perceived as such face much more problems (like bigotry or unequal treatment among many others) than cis or cis-passing people (Dias et all, 2021, p.695), because, just like the creature, they are regarded as less than human, something unnatural and wretched.
On the other hand, Victor Frankenstein: pale, thin, dramatic, and beautifully at the verge of death at every point during the book (Cale, 2018). He would have been such a gorgeous lady of his time…if he had ever been one.
His resemblance to the transmasculine experience is even more tangible than the creature’s, from his obsession with the male figure to the “natural philosophy” that his father disapproved of and that helped him create, with the help of science, a “male” body that destroyed his conection with his family (as homophobic people threaten queernes does to people, being a threat to others, to the community and to oneself (Benshoff, 1997, p.1)).
Long story short, Victor Frankenstein’s inner struggle can be read as that of a transgender man who, facing the rejection of his family and his own internalized prejudices tries to come back and live his life as he normally would have done before realizing about his queerness, but the shadow of the man he has created —the man he is— follows him around throughout his life because as much as he tries to get rid of him, the creature will keep coming back as he is a part of him that  he projects as unconnected to him because he refuses to accept it. That last point is clear at the end of the book, because it takes for Victor Frankenstein to die for the creature to do so too.

what media would you actually recommend? you seem to have very discerning taste
geeeeee... I don’t know. there are multiple metrics by which a piece of media can have value to me... but maybe not to you.
1) sheer entertainment value (personal, subjective - in my case usually humor-oriented, less focused on action and explosions and violence and gore and hacking and slashing and sex meant to titillate ... but humor is subjective in its own right)
2) rhetorical value (based on the presence and effectiveness of conveying intent - a thesis, a point to make, something new and interesting to say unique to the creator’s perspective. also, prose/dialogue/text that sounds good, hits right, says exactly what it wants to say with brevity and precision)
2a) IMO, “objective” judgments of a piece of media’s quality should rest most strongly on this point. 2b) sometimes the meat of my analysis is based in an interpretation of how a creator failed to say something or what they unintentionally revealed about themselves and their views in the process. and that can be interesting, but it doesn’t necessarily make the work any less shit
3) informational value (for research purposes, which may not be relevant to anyone else. definitely a step down in importance because I can read something and find it informative without enjoying it or thinking it’s “good”)
it’s impossible for everything I consume to meet all of those standards all the time... and I like to have a diverse media diet. I enjoy plenty of things which don’t really affect me or make me think too deeply. but it’s hard to recommend anything because people’s priorities and tastes vary so much.
as far as what I’ve enjoyed and found value in? I’ve already gone over books, so let’s do movies. I love Bob Roberts; had a point to make and made it with aplomb. it was very funny - and useful as a point of reference for my own work(!) Dr. Strangelove was also great. I’m a big fan of satirical dark comedies that leave you with this sense of gruesome hilarity... beyond the funnies, I like things that are sort of distant from their subjects, inhuman and quirky, using them as tools to move us along on a painterly backdrop - A Zed & Two Noughts and other Greenaway fare + and arguably Kubrick as well - but I also enjoy studies that lavish attention on their subjects, like Girl, Interrupted. I still love that one. in spite of it all. and I liked One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s nest despite its treatment of Ratched/the vile protagonist lol. Network was “good” no matter how badly they fumbled Dunaway and how much that fucking pissed me off. oh and anything about Watergate... I love a good documentary
but anyway, I know saying any of this invites speculation about the Problematic or questionable elements present therein. why not more lesbian media? why not more woman directors? how could you enjoy x knowing what y did to z? I don’t know. I respect an auteur, a clear and defined vision. I have had fun with many things that are not that. but at the end of the day, regardless of content, it all serves to entertain me, to shape and inform my artistic endeavors writing about what I want to read and saying what I want to say. so, you know, your mileage may vary. also I like musicals

Efficiently Reading, Researching, and Approaching Academia
❈ Making Academic Texts Less Daunting ❈
One of the largest issues regarding accessibility in academic spaces is the daunting nature of a lot of academic works, whether they're books, dissertations, or articles. This is usually caused by academic jargon, nightmarishly long run-on sentences, and sometimes the writing is just plain dense.
This first lesson will be some tips and tricks for making reading academic texts more digestible!
First and foremost, getting to the point matters, understanding the theme, argument, thesis, what-have-you will make everything else make sense. In order to do this, you will want to read three things, that are usually signposted or labelled within a text: the abstract, the introduction, and the conclusion. This is also a good trick to get the gist of a text if you have to read in a rush and don't need to use citations.
What Do These Components Tell You? ❈ The Abstract - An abstract is basically a summary of the entire paper or text, this will tell you the thesis, maybe some points of data, and the conclusion reached by the author ❈ The Introduction - The introduction will provide a more detailed thesis and will detail what theories or interpretations are being used in the paper. In some cases they may also provide historic or cultural contexts for an argument or point. ❈ The Conclusion - The conclusion will provide the finishing points of the text, it will touch on key points of information or debate, explain what this thesis or proven point means for the understanding of the event, item, site, etc. that is being written about.
All in all, these three points in a text will give you an overview of the purpose of the text, and typically these sections don't get too heavily muddled down in academic lingo, which makes them more accessible to a broader base of readers. You don't always need a detailed understanding, sometimes just getting the point is enough.
Taking Notes
Whether you're reading something for applying it to your own writings or just to consume information, annotate the shit out of it. It doesn't matter if you're writing on a digital copy of the text, writing as you read on a separate notepad, or if you print out an article and write your notes on that. Just! Take! Notes!
The purpose of this is to help you process your thoughts, make note of what interests or confuses you, and, in the case that you are writing something that needs citations, prevents plagiarism. Use whatever format (color coding, highlighting, etc.) that works for you, what matters is the act of taking notes will encourage you to be an active reader rather than eventually falling into passive reading (if you notice yourself falling into this, take a break! Your brain needs rest.)
Here are two examples of how I take notes, one is for a chapter I had to read for a discussion, the other is how I take notes for papers and publications: Discussion-focused notes in The Oxford Handbook for The Bronze Age Aegean

Information gathering notes for a paper on the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, text used written in print at top

Finding Sources There are many ways to find sources on a topic no matter the level of obscurity: ❈ Wikipedia - you really don't want to cite Wikipedia as a source, scrolling down to the sources/bibliography section at the bottom can give you a jumping off point. Usually full citations are given and sometimes the text/article in question is linked
❈ Google Scholar - I generally don't consider this the strongest search engine because it's difficult to narrow down by topic, discipline, etc. but it works in a pinch!
❈ JSTOR - A step above Google Scholar and it does allow stuff with a free membership, but you can also get further access with a paid membership or institutional access
❈ EBSCO - definitely has a learning curve but it has a large pool of information to pull from. The biggest downside is you usually can't download content. It has a different site for free content and content available for purchase or via institutional access.
❈ WorldCat - while it usually doesn't have the source itself accessible on the site, WorldCat will tell you where you can find what you're looking for and sometimes offers the ability to contact whoever is nearest to you that has the text
❈ Public Libraries - while public libraries are generally focused on non-research-based use, librarians are trained in research assistance and public libraries generally have access to inter-library loans (ILL) and can likely get books for you without needing you to travel far to get them
❈ Research Libraries - the biggest downside to many academic libraries is that you need to pay to access, however, if you can access them, they are typically more research-oriented than a public library and will often have specialists in certain subjects available to assist. An exception to the "paid" rule are usually state or federal libraries, such as the Library of Congress.
❈ Reaching Out To The Author Directly - with most journal publications, authors don't see a dime. If you can't pay for access, you can usually find the email of the author on an institution website and you can reach out to them there! It never hurts to ask.
Organizing Your Sources
Whether you have a stack of physical books, a long list of downloads, or links to sources, you’re going to want a way to organize them. Here are some ideas: ❈ Zotero - Zotero is a free app and browser extension that can file, organize, and even provide details about the sources you use. I really recommend this if you’re in an academic environment or need to cite sources a lot because one of its functions is that it will automatically cite sources and create bibliography in any format you choose. It functions both in the cloud and on a desktop/hard drive. ❈Google Drive - straightforward and simple to set up, all you have to do is upload files, organize them into as many folders as you please and go. However there are two downsides to Google Drive: They have a limit to the amount of storage you can use before you have to pay & if your sources are from a questionable site or may violate copyright, Google has the ability to remove those files permanently. ❈ CollaNote - CollaNote is a great, free app for storing notes and PDFs that also allows you to write on/annotate said files. It’s biggest downside is that it is iOS only and it’s cloud feature is kind of finicky. ❈ Discord - if you’re a professional Giant Nerd like me, having a personal discord server to sort and upload your sources is great! However, similar to Google Drive, there are file upload limits and Discord has the ability to remove material that violates copyright. ❈ OneNote - similar to CollaNote, OneNote allows you to upload PDFs so you can take notes on them and it is supported across devices. However, Microsoft office can be expensive to pay for. ❈ Your Trusty Computer/Flashdrive - There’s always the old fashioned route of storing your sources in folders on your hard or flash drive. Downside is flash drives are expensive and if your computer goes kaput, you will likely lose work. Make sure to have a cloud backup if you use this method!
Source Vetting
Sometimes vetting sources can be easy, other times it can be a massive pain for a range of reasons.
A good, general test to abide by is the CRAAP test:
Currency Relevance Authority Accuracy Purpose
A more detailed set of prompts to apply with the CRAAP test is available here: https://researchguides.njit.edu/evaluate/CRAAP
What If The CRAAP Test Doesn’t Work or I Don’t Know Have Enough Context for It To Work?
❈ Use Common Sense - does the information sound plausible? Does it make sense?
❈ Triangulate your Sources look at other sources regarding the topic. Do they say something similar? Do they acknowledge the information presented by the source you’re using?
❈ Investigate Credentials just having “PhD” at the end of a name does not a good source make. See what the author(s) credentials are. Are their credentials openly listed? Did they receive them from an accredited institution? Consider what group published the source. Was it a blog site or was it an academic publisher? Is the source peer reviewed or sent out as is?
❈ Look For Citations does the author or creator cite their information? Do they describe a body of work that they either gathered themselves or did research into? Are they transparent about their sources? Are they able to admit to gaps in their knowledge or accessible data or do they just fill it in?

Dwarf planet Ceres was formed in coldest zone of Solar System and thrust into Asteroid Belt In an article published in the journal Icarus, researchers at São Paulo State University (UNESP) and collaborators report the findings of a study reconstituting the formation of the dwarf planet Ceres. The research was conducted by Rafael Ribeiro de Sousa, a professor in the program of graduate studies in physics on the Guaratinguetá campus. The co-authors of the article are Ernesto Vieira Neto, who was Ribeiro de Sousa’s PhD thesis advisor, and researchers affiliated with Côte d’Azur University in France, Rice University in the United States, and the National Observatory in Rio de Janeiro. Ceres is the largest object in the Asteroid Belt, a collection of celestial bodies located between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. It is roughly spherical and comprises a third of the Asteroid Belt’s total mass, with a diameter of almost 1,000 km, less than a third of the Moon’s. Its orbit around the Sun is almost perfectly circular, with 0.09 eccentricity, and an inclination of 9.73° to the invariable plane of the Solar System, much greater than Earth’s, which is 1.57°. Ceres has too little mass to retain an atmosphere by gravitational attraction, but sunlight evaporates the ammonia and water ice below its surface, forming a mist that disperses into outer space. Ice deposits shine brightly at the bottom of its craters. The possibility of primitive life forms has not been ruled out. The craters were mapped by NASA’s 2007-18 Dawn Mission, which orbited Vesta, the second-largest body in the Asteroid Belt, as well as Ceres. A very interesting video of Occator crater made using data from the Dawn spacecraft can be watched on the mission website. The dwarf planet’s core is probably made up of heavy matter – iron and silicates – but what differentiates it from nearby objects is its mantle of ammonia and water ice. Most bodies in the Asteroid Belt do not have ammonia, so the hypothesis is that Ceres was formed outside it, in the colder region beyond Jupiter’s orbit, and then thrust into the middle of the Asteroid Belt by the huge gravitational instability caused by the formation of gas giants Jupiter and Saturn. “The presence of ammonia ice is strong observational evidence that Ceres may have been formed in the coldest region of the Solar System beyond the Frost Line, in temperatures low enough to cause condensation and fusion of water and such volatile substances as carbon monoxide [CO], carbon dioxide [CO2] and ammonia [NH3],” Ribeiro de Sousa said. The Frost Line is now located very near Jupiter’s orbit, but when the Solar System was being formed 4.5 billion years ago, the position of this zone varied according to the evolution of the protoplanetary gas disk and the formation of the giant planets. “The intense gravitational disturbance produced by the growth of these planets may have changed the density, pressure and temperature of the protoplanetary disk, displacing the Frost Line. This disturbance in the protoplanetary gas disk may have led the expanding planets to migrate to orbits closer to the Sun as they acquired gas and solids,” Vieira Neto said. “In our article, we propose a scenario to explain why Ceres is so different from neighboring asteroids. In this scenario, Ceres began forming in an orbit well beyond Saturn where ammonia was abundant. During the giant planet growth stage, it was pulled into the asteroid Belt as a migrant from the outer Solar System, and survived for 4.5 billion years until now,” Ribeiro de Sousa said. To test the hypothesis, Ribeiro de Sousa and collaborators ran a large number of computer simulations of giant planet formation inside the protoplanetary gas disk that surrounded the Sun. In their model, the disk contained Jupiter, Saturn, embryonic planets (precursors of Uranus and Neptune), and a collection of objects similar to Ceres in size and chemical composition. The assumption was that Ceres was a planetesimal, one of a class of bodies thought to have been building blocks of planets, asteroids and comets. “Our simulations showed that the giant planet formation stage was highly turbulent, with huge collisions between the precursors of Uranus and Neptune, ejection of planets out of the Solar System, and even invasion of the inner region by planets with masses greater than three times Earth’s mass. In addition, the strong gravitational disturbance scattered objects similar to Ceres everywhere. Some may well have reached the region of the Asteroid Belt and acquired stable orbits capable of surviving other events,” Ribeiro de Sousa said. Three main mechanisms acted to keep these objects in the region, he added: the action of gas, which smoothed their orbital eccentricities and inclinations; mean motion resonances with Jupiter, protecting them against ejections and collisions caused by that giant planet; and close encounters with invader planets, scattering planetesimals to more stable inner regions of the Asteroid Belt. “Our main finding was that in the past there were at least 3,600 Ceres-like objects beyond Saturn’s orbit. With this number of objects, our model showed that one of them could have been transported and captured in the Asteroid Belt, in an orbit very similar to Ceres’s current orbit,” he said. Other research groups had already estimated this number of Ceres-like objects, based on observation of craters and on the sizes of other populations of celestial bodies beyond Saturn, such as those of the Kuiper Belt, where Pluto and other small planets orbit. “Our scenario enabled us to confirm the number and explain Ceres’s orbital and chemical properties. The study reaffirms the accuracy of the most recent models of the formation of the Solar System,” he said. How the planets formed A Solar System planetary formation scenario based on the latest information available helps understand the study by situating Ceres in the overall process. “From observational evidence, we know that any planetary system, not just our own Solar System, is formed from a disk of gas and dust that surrounds a newborn star. Events that form stars are still poorly understood, but the consensus so far is that stars are born from the gravitational collapse of a giant molecular cloud,” Ribeiro de Sousa said. The existence of protoplanetary disks is not mere supposition. On the contrary, there have been robust observations, such as images obtained by the European Space Agency (ESA) using the 66-antenna Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile, with impressively high resolution and a wealth of details showing protoplanetary disks around very young stars. “In the case of the Solar System, the data we have suggests the protoplanetary disk was 99% gas and 1% dust. The dust probably came from older stars that had ended their lifecycle and ejected heavy matter into space,” Ribeiro de Sousa explained. “The dust that accumulated around the Sun was sufficient to form at least the smaller bodies, the terrestrial planets, and the cores of the gas giants. The first solids to condense in the protoplanetary disk were calcium-aluminum inclusions (CAIs), which have been found in meteorites and dated as far back as 4.568 billion years ago.” Several young stars have been observed in environments characterized as planetary nurseries, and have been dated to between 1 million and 10 million years ago. This is important information because it shows that the formation of gas planets, like Jupiter or Saturn, or planets with a gas envelope, like Uranus and Neptune, should occur within the first 10 million years of a star’s life at most. After that, protoplanetary disks no longer have enough gas. Rocky planets of the terrestrial type could emerge earlier or later. No one knows, but other available information shows that the formation of Earth and the Moon was one of the latest events in the genesis of the Solar System, and occurred 4.543 billion years ago. The smaller bodies in the system (dwarf planets, satellites, comets, asteroids, dust, etc.) are the remains of planet formation, and evolved physically and dynamically before and after the gas stage via processes such as interaction with gas, collision, and gravitational capture. The planetary formation process is complex, comprising stages that go from dust with a particle size as tiny as a micron (10−6 m) to planets several times larger than Jupiter. “Dust accumulates through adhesions and collisions inside the protoplanetary disk. Gravitational attraction between particles isn’t relevant, but the Sun’s gravitational pull makes gas rotate more slowly than dust, and this produces very strong aerodynamic drag on the dust, which sweeps the particles into the plane of the gas disk and drives them radially toward the Sun. When the dust reaches a size of a few centimeters, it forms pebbles, which make all the difference in the process of planetary growth because they influence the speed at which the gas rotates. When the velocities of the gas and pebbles become the same, the gas drag practically disappears, giving the pebbles a chance to accrete sufficiently to give rise to planetesimals – bodies with sizes ranging from 10 km to 1,000 km. These are the building blocks of planets and precursors of small bodies,” Ribeiro de Sousa said. In the next stage, larger and larger objects are formed by gravitational capture of pebbles and dust, or by collisions. When an object grows large enough to have the mass of three to ten Earths, the gravitational disturbance it produces in the gas disk makes it migrate to an orbit closer to the star. When it grows larger than ten Earths, it starts accreting a gas envelope, and the build-up of gas makes its growth very fast. “Formation of the giant planets Jupiter and Saturn produced such a huge gravitational disturbance that it modeled the gas disk and triggered a new type of planetary migration. This violent stage made planets collide and ejected planets from the Solar System until gravitational balance enabled the system as a whole to acquire a degree of stability,” Ribeiro de Sousa concluded. The study was funded by FAPESP via a doctoral scholarship and a scholarship for a research internship abroad awarded to Ribeiro de Sousa, and via the Thematic Project “On the relevance of small bodies in orbital dynamics”.

It's finally happened. While I haven't touched patch content yet for endwalker, I have been slowly making my way through other misc questlines, one such being the studium quests for disciple of the hand/land, and there is some very interesting stuff there. When I start nerding about lore, I inevitably start trying to come up with theories about where the story/lore is going next.
Endwalker spoilers are under the cut for general MSQ stuff and the studium quests if you haven't finished them yet. The long and short of it, some stuff is mentioned in those quests that perhaps hints at future plotlines.
The two quest lines, in particular, that stand out are the Faculty of Archaeology (BM/ARM/GM) and the Faculty of Aetherology (Fishing)
We will start with the fishing quest line first because the stuff mentioned in this feels like it may have far-reaching consequences.
To summarise the questline, you aid T'laqa Tia in researching underwater aetheric currents for his thesis by catching fish and measuring their aetheric levels to back up his theories. The aether currents ebb and flow with the tides, and fish follow those patterns during migrations and such. Over the course of it, you discover that the death of Zodiark messed with the aether currents over Etheirys, causing various fish to get extreme aether sickness and end up in places they shouldn't.
This would make a lot of sense, given what we know of Zodiark. He was created to essentially control/restore the various forms of aether to restore the world to how it was before the Final Days. However, there is another arguably more important thing that will likely have consequences I believe we have yet to see. The death of Hydaelyn and the presumed draining of the Mother Crystal. It can be argued that Zodiark and Hydaelyn were a central part of controlling aether flows on Etheirys; the lack of one of them would throw things out of balance, but both?
Etheirys as we know it has never existed without the influence of both Zodiark and Hydaelyn. While we do not know the specifics of what they affected or didn't, it feels like their absence will likely have some tangible impact on things. What that impact will be remains to be seen, but it may have to do with the Lifestream. The end of the fishing questline mentions T'laqa Tia's research could go some way to helping understand the Lifestream further. Perhaps this new understanding will help with travelling between shards, or maybe making using spells like Flow less risky or possibly even finding a way to "heal" the damage done by those spells.
However, there is something else their absence could lead to. Less or more rejoinings, the one of importance being that of the 13th.
While we only have the word of Ascians to go by, and their lore has been rewritten and changed a few times already, the 13th was the first shard they sought to rejoin with the source, but for some reason, it failed. We know the 13th still exists, so it's not as if the rejoining happened but wasn't recorded in history. It still meets the criteria for a rejoining even now, but something is, or was, preventing that from happening. So we can presume there is either something in the 13th preventing it from happening, or there was something on the source. We could assume it was Hydaelyn's influence, light fending off shadow and all that, but she has not been able to stop other rejoinings, so why would she be able to protect against this one?
Regardless, energies of the 13th have been bleeding into the source for millennia, given the presence of voidsent. Before, it may have only been a little bit, but with the absence of Hydaelyn and Zodiark, it could potentially become a flood. We could start seeing more and more voidsent appearing in greater numbers.
Like I said at the start, I haven't started patch content yet, so some of this stuff may come up in 6.1/6.2 MSQ stuff; if it does, then tell me.
Now, onto the Faculty of Archaeology.
This is the more interesting, if vague potential hint for what's coming. In this questline, you help restore a relic called the Golden Dhyata, once at the end of the questline, you restore the weird little mammet and find that it is, in theory, a type of auto translator. It is a full NPC come the end but only has this to say.
Tumblr media
This certainly sounds like a calamity like event…
As for who or what the sleeping serpent is, I cannot say, but the description sounds very much similar to the symbol of the ouroboros, which according to Wikipedia.
"The ouroboros or uroboros is an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or dragon eating its own tail. The ouroboros is often interpreted as a symbol for eternal cyclic renewal or a cycle of life, death, and rebirth."
Now we know Azdaja is in the void, again I haven't played through the patch, so I'm unsure if we actually meet her or if she's still lost there; the long and short of it, though, this could mean we end up fighting either her or another dragon, perhaps one artificially made.
There is however another theory we can apply here. It is not a physical serpent at all but a metaphor. The Great Serpent of Ronka is a metaphor for the Lifestream in the first; if the Lifestream is now uncontrolled by Zodiark or Hydaelyn, perhaps it is doomed to become chaotic and has the potential to influence other shards as well.
As for the seven wedges driven into its back…well…there are seven remaining shards, and there are seven scions as of right now; it could be alluding to either, honestly. Could we have to trigger rejoinings ourselves? Maybe finding a less destructive way than the Ascians used? Or would bridges/connections between the shards be enough?
Writing all of this just makes me want to play the patch content even more, but I'm trying to be patient and wait for 6.3 at least T.T

Pokemon crack
Yuichiro finally shows up at blueberry academy
Lan: took your time
Mega: "Lan, don't be rude!"
Yuichiro: hello boys. Lan, is that a school uniform? I thought you didn't like uniforms
Lan: I still don't, but I have to.
Mega: "Lan, behave"
Lan: I'm behaving!
Mega: *sigh* "let's just find the professor and let's get this over with"
At the professor school lab
Prof: it's an honor to meet you Dr. Hikari. I followed your work for a long time
Yuichiro: oh! Really?
Prof: of course! You've done so much in your career, and your research
Yuichiro: well it's always nice to meet people who have the same type of interest in research
Mega: "I thought we were supposed to get this thing over with so he could leave us alone?"
Lan: looks like they're in some kind of deep research discussion. Let's get lunch and hope they're ready after that
Prof: I read your thesis about pokemon behaviors and how humans can better interact with them from front to back! It was so insightful and inspired me!
Yuichiro: Well thank you, that’s very flattering
Prof: I’m so curious though about your relationship with this alpha cofagrigus. Your son is so young and not as experienced as other trainers who own the remaining alphas in the world. And it’s quite intelligent. What’s the deal with it?
Yuichiro: Well, Mega is very special. He was ostracized by his own species as a Yamask and wandered around the region until he met Lan. Saved the kid from an aggressive poochyena. He’s been part of the family ever since!
Prof: But that’s atypical behavior for an alpha! They’re normally very aggressive by nature! How was he ostracized from his own when he’s the biggest and therefore the designated leader of the pack? And to save an unfamiliar child? He should have attacked him along with the poochyena!
Yuichiro: I know it’s hard to believe, but like people, pokemon are capable of personalities that may differ from what is expected. It doesn’t make him any less of an alpha though
Prof: I-I guess I understand…
Yuichiro: Now, my son informs me you want to perform another test on Mega. What would that entail?
Prof: Oh, yes, of course! Well, you see, since he’s a very unusual alpha case—and based on what you’ve told me about him—I was wanting to observe his behaviors and maybe do some scans on him
Yuichiro: Scans? Scan what?
Prof: Well his mind of course. I mean there has to be something wrong with him to have this strange mentality
Yuichiro: There is nothing wrong with Mega. He’s just a docile alpha pokemon, as we’ve discussed
Prof: But as a behavior specialist, even you must admit—
Yuichiro: Mega has gone through a traumatic experience that he does not want or wish anyone that isn’t immediate family to know about. I request you not try to push this, good professor
Prof: Pl-Please don’t be offended Doctor, I only—wait…traumatic experience? As a yamask, or…are you implying he still remembers his past—
Lan: Hey Dad, are you still talking? Me and Mega are ready for—
Yuichiro: Actually we were just finishing up. It was nice to meet you Professor but I must go. Come along, boys, you must show me around the place before I have to leave!
Lan: Uhhh okay???
Mega: ????
They leave
Prof: …Curiouser and curiouser

7 important tips and advice every PhD student should know
Tumblr media

Unraveling the Mysteries: The Art of Exploratory Essay Writing
Embarking on the journey of an exploratory essay is like setting sail into uncharted waters, armed with curiosity and a thirst for knowledge. Unlike other forms of academic writing, an exploratory essay doesn't seek to argue a specific point; instead, it aims to explore a subject, delve into its complexities, and present diverse perspectives. If you find yourself navigating the seas of uncertainty, fret not – this guide will serve as your compass, providing essential insights and tips to master the art of exploratory essay writing.
Understanding the Essence:
At its core, an exploratory essay is a quest for knowledge. It encourages writers to investigate a topic without preconceived notions or a predetermined thesis. The process involves thorough research, thoughtful analysis, and an open-minded exploration of various viewpoints. This type of essay is less about reaching a definitive conclusion and more about illuminating the intricacies of a subject.
Selecting a Compelling Topic:
The journey begins with selecting a topic that piques your interest. Whether it's a contemporary social issue, a scientific phenomenon, or a philosophical question, choose a subject that allows for diverse perspectives. Remember, the goal is to explore, so opt for a topic with multiple facets that can be examined and discussed.
Conducting In-Depth Research:
Once you've chosen your topic, dive into the realm of research. Explore academic articles, books, reputable websites, and other credible sources to gather a comprehensive understanding of your subject. Take notes, highlight key points, and immerse yourself in the wealth of information available. The more you know, the better equipped you'll be to navigate the complexities of your chosen topic.
Developing a Tentative Thesis:
While the exploratory essay doesn't have a traditional thesis statement, it's beneficial to develop a tentative thesis or guiding question. This will serve as a roadmap for your exploration, providing a sense of direction without limiting your investigation. Keep it flexible, allowing room for adjustment as you uncover new information during the writing process.
Organizing Your Thoughts:
Structure is key in any form of writing, and an exploratory essay is no exception. Begin with an introduction that introduces the topic and sets the stage for exploration. The body of the essay should be dedicated to presenting different perspectives, supported by evidence and analysis. Finally, conclude by summarizing your findings and reflecting on the complexities you've uncovered.
Embracing Flexibility:
One of the hallmarks of an exploratory essay is its flexibility. Don't be afraid to adapt and refine your approach as you delve deeper into your subject. New information may reshape your understanding, and that's perfectly acceptable. Embrace the fluid nature of the exploratory essay, allowing your exploration to evolve organically.
Conclusion:
In the realm of academic writing, the exploratory essay stands as a unique and enlightening endeavor. It challenges writers to step beyond the confines of traditional argumentation and instead embark on a journey of discovery. As you navigate the intricate waters of exploratory essay writing, remember to choose a compelling topic, conduct thorough research, develop a flexible thesis, and embrace the inherent fluidity of the process. With these tools in hand, you're well-equipped to unravel the mysteries of any subject, one exploration at a time. Happy writing!

NAME. Kadir Osman AGE & BIRTH DATE. 27 & May 25th, 1997 GENDER & PRONOUNS. Male & He/Him SPECIES. Vampire ( Leech ) BLOODLINE. Unknown OCCUPATION. Researcher at Labyrinth FACE CLAIM. Emre Bey
biography
( tw: blood ) Fantasy was an easy escape from the arguments that would go on in the small, cramped apartment. It was always like this for him, his parents would fight over the dishes in the sink, dinner not being on the table, an unpaid bill, money owed. Missing lighters or beers. Anything, everything. There was a time where Kadir thought that if he just stayed out of it then it wouldn’t ever involve him, that whatever was going on outside his door was something he could shut out entirely. His toys were rudimentary, but he’d scrape together enough money to buy notebooks from the local store and in them he’d fill all the stories that ran rampant in his head. Media was another escape and often that influence came out in the pages, brave nights, assassins who took on the world’s most dangerous people and won. In his stories there was always a saviour, a victor who saw the world for what it was, but reality was far less simplistic. In school he was a nobody, someone who was almost always late, whose interests didn’t align with the mainstream. The friends he made were people who he could amalgamate to, with ideas that he could adapt to be his own. He was smart, sharp, observant, and he approached problems creatively - often using tools or formulas he produced on his own or by simply thinking outside of the box.
College was where he thought he’d find himself, the question had come up so many times before: what do you want to do with your life? But Kadir didn’t really have an answer, after years of shutting out the world’s arguments he had a hard time thinking beyond his next class, assignment, or semester. At first the creative arts interested him, but the criticism that came along with producing a personal piece of work didn’t sit well with him. Science, mathematics, something either was or it wasn’t, and if he had an idea then all he had to do was prove it. It was in his second year that he discovered this about himself, what he really loved was breaking ground, thinking outside of the box, and more than anything he loved to be right.
One night when he was walking home from a party he was attacked, though it hardly felt that way at the time. Teeth broke the skin of his neck and immediately Kadir’s brain released a rush of dopamine that made the tips of his fingers tingle, all the way down to his toes. It was unlike anything that Kadir had experienced before, fulfilling and somehow erotic all at once, it was over too soon and the man responsible was gone. A dreamy wonder sat fixed on Kadir’s expression as he gingerly touched the place where he’d been bitten, replaying the sensation in his head over and over. He knew that he should have hated it, that he should have called someone, anyone, but what pained him most was not even knowing the individual’s name. Kadir had never seen him before, he thought if he had then he would certainly have remembered him.
From that night on the passionless student changed to obsessive, the thought of never seeing this man before turned to painful anguish, heartache as he tried to understand what it was that had formed such a considerable tie within him. Kadir didn’t understand why he couldn’t get the man out of his head, but he was a scientist, and when he drew and analysed his own blood using the facilities on campus he found trace amounts of what he’d assumed were the reason for what he was feeling. Something about the creature’s saliva was reacting with his body and as his system gradually rid itself of the intruder, Kadir felt its loss. He went on to finish his degree, completing his undergraduate studies in cellular biology with a paleontological focus. While his thesis on vampires made him the laughing stock of the entire academic community, it attracted the attention of The Eye.
Rome was the centre of the supernatural world, under the tutelage of the overseer Kadir’s range of knowledge vastly increased. The Eye had knowledge that was guarded from the rest of the world, libraries of research going back centuries upon centuries. Previously known as The Eye of Horus, the humans had been studying the supernatural world since ancient Egypt, developing methods of neutralising or weaponizing their abilities every step of the way. In truth, Kadir had very little interest in weapons, but neither did he care if his work resulted in the production of them. What he cared about was understanding how these creatures ticked, and if the sensation could be replicated without the pesky emotional connection that came with being turned into a thrall.
Sacrificed by someone he assumed was a friend, Halloween brought Kadir’s mortal life to a close. His soul offered to the necronomicon, he died with vampire blood in his system and awoke when the chaos of the night had subsided. A creature of the night that craved blood but could do nothing but paw at the walls of the cavern where he’d fallen. The evening’s destruction trapped Kadir within the catacombs and even with whatever strength being undead afforded him, there was nothing that the vampire could do but scratch at the stone while he quietly starved and petrified.
A red wedding brought a river of blood over the streets of Rome and through the old roads blood of the vampires who fought and died trickled below, finding its way into the desiccated Kadir’s system. The conflict above loosened the catacombs around him as aspects of the divine fought in the streets of Rome, putting down and curing those that they could while the wedding attendees retreated to safety and the lycans of Lupercalia clashed with the undead. Feral and starved, Kadir burst from his makeshift crypt as the conflict subsided, burrowed his teeth into the closest vampire he could find and was reborn once more.
Connections to The Eye abandoned, the leech was made to exploit what resources remained for him beyond the facility. A limited supply of drugs meant to suppress creatures like him was a start, and a lycan he’d known in life as the subject of his fixations was another. The rancour brought a steady stream of blood for Kadir to feed from, but if The Eye could manufacture human blood - then why couldn’t he make a surrogate for vampires? He knew what would happen if he returned to The Eye as he was, a monster and a vampire all rolled into one, so his work continued in private from a makeshift laboratory in the very crypts that had been his tomb for so long.

The Writing Process
Ever since I was young I have always enjoyed writing. It was a way to sort out my thoughts, beliefs, and ideas. However, when we began learning how to write essays in school I could never finish them. My points always came out disjointed and I inevitably gave up and threw the assignment away. I fluctuated between following no guidelines then floundering on the next step, and following the writing process to the exact letter that I'd get so caught up in it that nothing seemed complete enough to submit.
Eventually, it clicked writing is personal and so the writing process often must be modified for the authors individual needs. It is helpful to consider it a cyclical guide with these rough steps: prewriting, research, drafting, revising, and editing/proofreading (The University of Kansas). Here is advice on how I use this guide.
The first step of prewriting is to outline your goals. What do you want to accomplish with your work? If you were assigned this by a professor or a boss what are their specifications? What do they want you to accomplish? If you were not assigned a topic you will need to brainstorm a topic. Then choose an audience you want to address your work to. If it's possible choose a topic you are interested in and an audience you relate to.
Research is not always a necessary task in everything you will write. However, I find that it is always a helpful one. You should research facets of your topic you like. If you are genuinely interested in your topic you be less likely to succumb to writers block and will know better how your topic applies to your audience. This is also a helpful step to come back to when you feel stuck.
The first thing you will want to do when you draft is to come up with your thesis statement. This will be the main idea of your work that you will build your essay around. I usually then build a rough outline detailing the vague concepts I want to go into. I expand on that over and over until I have a final draft. This is also the step to add your in sources.
Your final draft as a Frankenstein's monster of ideas and concepts likely won't make much sense. That is where revising comes in. In this step you rewrite the final draft so it flows well when spoken outloud.
I personal like to edit my work whenever I get stuck. But, you should also do it when you start to feel ready to submit it. In this step you should make sure that all punctuation and spelling is correct. When you feel confident in your work have someone you trust to give good advice proofread it.
The writing process isn't linear. I often go back a step or skip a step or two whenever I am stuck. Because of this the writing process doesn't really end. You simply repeat the the parts of it you need to until your work feels complete.

What's the difference between an M.Phil and a PhD? - Geeta University
Geeta University is a leading institution for higher education, offering a range of programs in a variety of disciplines. Two of the most popular postgraduate degrees offered at the university are the M.Phil and the PhD. While both of these degrees are postgraduate, there are several key differences between them, and it's important to understand these differences before deciding which program to enroll in.
The M.Phil (Master of Philosophy) is a one-year program that provides students with advanced training in a specific area of study. It is designed to help students build a solid foundation of knowledge in their field and to prepare them for further academic research. The M.Phil program at Geeta University typically requires students to complete coursework and a research project, which may include a thesis or a dissertation. The degree is often seen as a stepping stone to a PhD, as it provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary to carry out research at a higher level.
On the other hand, the PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) is a more extensive program that typically takes between three to five years to complete. The PhD program at Geeta University is designed to prepare students for careers in academia, research, or industry. The program requires students to complete extensive coursework and research, which may include a thesis, a dissertation, or a combination of both. The PhD is considered to be the highest academic degree available, and it demonstrates that a student has a thorough understanding of their field of study and has made an original contribution to their area of research.
One of the main differences between the M.Phil and the PhD is the level of research required. The M.Phil program is designed to provide students with a solid foundation of knowledge in their field, whereas the PhD program is designed to produce original research. In the PhD program, students are expected to carry out original research, contribute new insights to their field, and publish their findings in academic journals. In the M.Phil program, students are typically required to complete a research project, but the focus is on gaining knowledge rather than making a new contribution to the field.
Another key difference between the two programs is the length of time it takes to complete them. The M.Phil program is a one-year program, whereas the PhD program typically takes between three to five years to complete. This means that students who enroll in the M.Phil program will receive their degree much faster than those who enroll in the PhD program. However, it's important to keep in mind that the length of time it takes to complete a PhD program can vary greatly depending on the field of study, the student's progress, and the requirements of the university.
The cost of the programs is also a significant difference between the M.Phil and the PhD. The M.Phil program is typically less expensive than the PhD program, as it is a one-year program. However, it's important to keep in mind that the cost of the programs can vary greatly depending on the university, the field of study, and the location. It's a good idea to research the cost of the programs at Geeta University before making a decision.
In conclusion, the M.Phil and the PhD are both postgraduate degrees that are offered at Geeta University. While they share some similarities, there are several key differences between them, including the level of research required, the length of time it takes to complete the programs, and the cost of the programs. It's important to consider these differences before deciding which program to enroll in, as each program offers its own unique advantages and disadvantages. Ultimately, the choice between the M.Phil and the PhD will depend on the student's individual goals and interests, as well as their career aspirations.

If you're an IB student, chances are that you're already aware of the Extended Essay (EE). The EE is a 4000 word research paper that you'll need to complete as part of your IB Diploma Programme.

1. Talk to your IB coordinator. Your coordinator is there to help you to select the topic that you want to do. Not only that, your coordinator has the statistics that can assist you to select which topic has the higher chance of getting an A. Not only that, you should also ask the IB teachers that will be your EE co-ordinator.
2. Do some research. Once you have a general idea of what you want to write about, do some research on your topic. This will help you narrow down your focus and come up with a more specific thesis statement. Furthermore, you would want to find a topic that more both practical and interesting, as being too practical may be less motivating but something too interesting may be too difficult for you to do. Therefore, like IA, finding the balance is important.
3. Brainstorm with friends. Sometimes it helps to talk to someone else about your ideas before you start writing. One way of doing this would be talking to former IB students who have experienced the same as you, their feedback can play key importance as you can steer away the mistakes they made.
4. Get organized. Once you have a general idea of what you want to write about, start organizing your thoughts by creating an outline. This will help you structure your essay and keep your thoughts focused; but also keep your points into one place so that it will not look too jumbled. Not only your ideas, organizing your data will help you when you start writing, as it will decrease the amount of time that it will take to complete your essay.
