The unveiled plaque read “This Building Is Named In Honor of Susan A. Davis by an Act of Congress, Public Law 117-314, December 27, 2022.” However, a legend will remain for the foreseeable future in large letters atop the Post Office Building stating: “United States Post Office, Andrew Jackson Station, San Diego, California 92115.” No congressional appropriation has been made to replace the lettering, and according to Davis, such an appropriation is problematic because such legislation would have to incorporate not only this post office branch but other renamed post office branches throughout the nation.
I am not so sweet on old Andy [Jackson]. He is the one that run us Cherokees out of Georgia and North Carolina… Old Andy, every time he couldn’t find anyone to jump on, he would come back and pounce onto us Indians… Then he would go to Florida and shoot up the Seminoles. Then he would have a row with the government, and they would take his command and his liquor away from him, and he would come back and sick himself onto us Cherokees again… They sent the Indians to Oklahoma. They had a treaty that said, ‘You shall have this land as long as the grass grows and the water flows.’ It looked like a good treaty, and it was, till they struck oil. Then the Government took it away from us again. They said the treaty only refers to water and grass; it don’t say anything about oil.”
7/31/2021 - Rep. Jacobs is still committed to renaming the Andrew Jackson Post Office. Stay tuned to her newsletter to find out how you can participate in the naming process.
I have been working on your reference question and so far have not found anything regarding the naming of the Post Office in Rolando. The first time it’s listed in the City Directories is 1967 (we don’t have a 1966 edition), and the San Diego Union index lists an article on July 5, 1965 about a construction contract being awarded. The annotated index does not mention any name for the Post Office.
I will continue working on your request to see if I can find anything regarding the naming process. If I find anything, I will contact you and let you know.

Hello, Mr Anderson:
I found some additional information regarding the Andrew Jackson Post Office, but still nothing significant in terms of the name. The first Andrew Jackson Post Office was located in City Heights East at 5400 El Cajon Blvd. It is listed in the 1950 City Directory; the John Adams Post Office is listed in that directory as well. There is a mention in the San Diego Union regarding the establishment of a substation in the vicinity of 30th and Adams that would be in operation by 1949, but it is not identified by name as the John Adams Post Office. There is nothing in our newspaper index regarding a substation at 5400 El Cajon Blvd.
There is a citation in History of California Post Offices (RCC 383.49794) for an Andrew Jackson Post Office in San Diego—no exact address—the was established 6/1/1950. Based on the date it appears to refer to the first Andre Jackson Post Office, not the one in Rolando. According to this source it was “Named by the POD to commemorate our 7th president.” It doesn’t say anything further as to why that particular president was chosen as the namesake.
I hope this additional information will be of use to you,
