(Un)popular SK Opinion: Ren&Jeanne make no sense and Men's existence is the most questionable of all
Alright, let me first get this out of the way because I'm a known Ren fangirl- no I don't hate Jeanne. I kinda used to after watching the original anime, but the manga as well as growing up and realizing she was just a brainwashed little kid who should be playing with dolls made me a defender of Jeanne and I firmly believe Marco should be in jail for what he did to her.
But that still doesn't mean Jeanne and Ren started making sense, not even after Red Crimson. The only thing they share is a similar pain from their pasts, and that's not enough to make a relationship work for the long-term. Ask my parents.
A relationship is build on so much more then just having a similar backstory and regrets. What do these two have in common, except for perhaps a better-then-you mindset on top of the aforementioned similar background?!
We see NO build-up at all. Even in Red Crimson, all we get is as much as a two page scene of them being a couple.
Yet even during that one scene between Yoh and Ren about having a family, it was implied he might already have a crush on Jeanne
HOW?!
In every scene they were in during the main series, he was pretty much annoyed with her and the X-LAWS.
So HOW?!
And then we get to their actual relationship, which seems messy AF. Like, Jeanne and Ren got engaged before she was pregnant, but she had short hair during their wedding. Ren said she cut her hair short after she had Men.
So, did she get pregnant during their engagement and is Men being babysat by the Jiang Shi during the wedding or something?
Also, the 'holy maiden', giving birth to a child out of wedlock?! Are you kidding me?! Am I seriously supposed to believe that considering Marco was so strict and religious, Jeanne grew up to be like, 'A baby before getting married? Okay, no problemo.'
It's not unheard of for teen moms to be allowed to get married when they are above 16, so why the fuck didn't Jeanne and Ren get married first in order to legitimize Men as their child?
And then we get to their actual married life.
Iron Maiden Jeanne, THAT Jeanne, who would shoulder all the sins of the world on her shoulders through regular self-torture, would travel through war conflicts to aid the people in need and would sleep in camps having barely anything, who turnt the X-LAWS into the world's largest charity organization, THAT Jeanne became a STAY AT HOME HOUSEWIFE?!
EXCUSE ME?!
Where the fuck did her noble mission go?!
She's an ambitious martyr, yet she gave everything up that she worked so hard for to mope the floors of her home?
That's character assasination if you ask me.
As parents, they make zero sense either.
Ren's pain and hatred of his family came from them robbing him of his childhood. Yet he's perfectly fine to send his SEVEN year old son into a dangerous tournament where nobody can be revived from the dead for the SLIM chance of them getting back Jeanne.
EXCUSE ME?!
This doesn't fit Ren AT ALL.
The more you actually think about Ren sending his son into the Flower of Maize and how it is in stark contrast with how he wants to be different from his family's ways and his established character, the more confusing it gets.
And I didn't understood why until I watched a YT video about Ren's character the other day, in which they pointed out the Shonen trope of having a rival-friend that the audience could root for in case they didn't like the main character like Goku and Vegeta.
That's what Ren and Yoh are in the series, and obviously, a lot of the people reading the sequal read the main series.
The more I think about it, the more I feel like Takei created Men and the Jeanne storyline to keep the Ren fans invested in the sequel.
Which is why, its definitely poor lazy writing, and not even the only problem of poor writing in the sequel (I am looking at you Miss Alumi, you're way too much like some fanfic's poorly written OC).

i think they’re a very cute ship . from the snippets we did get in the spin-off manga, i love how cute they are and with their little boy♡ also loved their interactions in the main story. not much but it wasn’t surprising they ended up together♡
of course i do wanna know how they got together and all so i can feel more attached to them but yeh. they’re cute and that’s good enough for me :3

Ren yelling at Jeanne is not abuse.
Because I have seen some people outright saying it is, which is an incredibly GOD AWFUL take I have ever seen, it really isn’t. At all.
Let’s take a look at these two specific pages shall we?
(Source: Shaman King chapter 180)
Before the 1st revival with Ren, we have to remember that before any of this happened, Ren allowed himself to get KILLED by nichrome due from the guilt he has committed from murdering his brother, Chrome from the Shaman Fight qualification test. Ren wanted to at least wanted to make up for his sins and it didn’t mattered to him anymore if he lived or died. On the other hand, Jeanne and the X-Laws made a deal with Yoh, being that should Jeanne revive Ren then Yoh must drop out from the Shaman fight in which he did, all so that Ren can get revived. During the process where Jeanne was getting ready to revive him, we have seen Ren’s spirit being against this decision and he was well aware of the deal that Yoh has made with the X-Laws. Ren was angry that Yoh have to drop out from the Shaman Fight all in order to revive Ren and Ren did not wanted that to happen for Yoh so Ren chooses the path to help Yoh instead.
But unfortunately in the end, Ren still gets revived but eventually much later, Yoh does get to rejoin the Shaman Fight again and the story moves forward. And honestly, Ren had every right to be angry about him getting revived because he cares a lot about Yoh and he does NOT want him to drop out of the Shaman fight just to revive him. Ren didn’t want that. Not only that, while Ren was “dead”, Ren also did not gave his consent to being revived either, as well as him being disgusted having his first kiss stolen by a spirit (Shamash) of all people and this all happened while he was a spirit that watched his dead body getting touched without his explicit permission.
After Ren gets revived, he does not show any gratitude towards Jeanne or the X-Laws. All he did here was express his honest feelings and was pretty straightforward about it. This in return, makes Jeanne cry due to his harsh response.
Now the reason for Jeanne crying is obviously because Ren responded that he did not recall asking for help and said it was a nuisance, expressing his ungratefulness and Jeanne was saddened by the fact he didn’t need her help on reviving him. (Also to add into the fact that Jeanne is also a very sensitive and emotional person)
However this is NOT in any way verbal abuse.
While it’s true that Ren yelled towards at Marco and Jeanne, doesn’t automatically mean it’s verbal abuse. Verbal abuse is a pattern of speaking with the intent to demean, humiliate, blame or threaten the victim. Though an abuser may raise their voice in mean and threatening ways, verbal abuse does not always include shouting. And once again, Ren had every right to be upset about the situation that happened beforehand. Ren is angry because Yoh is dropping out of Shaman Fight for him. Ren did NOT wanted that. All Ren said in response was that he never recalled asking for help and said it was a nuisance and from that mere word, “nuisance” implies that Jeanne reviving him was something he did NOT needed or asked for.
None of the action and words Ren had said is in any way a form of verbal abuse and never is.
If anything, this is what verbal abuse actually really is all about when an abuser does the following:
They will manipulate you, emotionally blackmail you and make threats
They will hurl insulting names at you until you comply with their demands.
They will communicate with you in a sarcastic tone and will be patronizing and disdainful
They will constantly criticize you
They will make unhealthy and demeaning comments about your life, background and family
They will often blame you verbally for the mistakes they make
They will feel jealous and accuse you of doing wrong things and make you feel guilty about them
They will give you the silent treatment, refuse to receive your calls, refuse to look at you or even sit in the same room
They will gaslight you and make you question your own thoughts and emotions
They will keep arguing with you about the same issues and the arguments will go around in circles without reaching a meaningful conclusion.
NONE of this is happening here during this scene at all and this does not = Ren being an abuser in any way. Ren is and never was an abuser.
Another evidence that contributes to this despite after Ren had yelled and left afterwards on their very first actual meeting, leaving a crying Jeanne behind, Jeanne does not harbor any negative feelings towards Ren as she was shown to later side with Yoh and his entire group he was currently affiliated with (Funbari onsen, Team the Ren and X-Laws) on chapter 219, as well as later coming along with Yoh with the others during the plant arc to stop Hao and also reviving Ren the 2nd time (In which there has been an implication that Ren and Jeanne interacted when she revived him- This implication can be found in Chapter 277) In Mentalite, Jeanne has an interview where she get questioned and one of question that asked her was “What incident she went through that changed her life”, with Jeanne responding "Fufufu, that's right. The Shaman fight is over but I have met many people and learn many things. Amid from all of this, the encounter with "that person" that took place was very shocking because it was the first time someone has spoken to me like that since I was born... Thinking about it now, ever since that event all I could ever think about was "that person". The “person” Jeanne was referring to was Ren.
And because we also later have Ren and Jeanne’s dynamic and chemistry being shown explicitly much later in their official artworks (Wedding artwork) Remix track, sequels and spinoffs (Red Crimson and Marcos) and seeing that they have a healthy loving relationship proves this point even further that Ren is not an abuser.
It’s true that Ren and Jeanne had a rough start at first in the beginning but by the end of the day what really matters is that they both grew up and changed for the better; When people used to be kids and were young, they would always do stupid things any other kids would normally do. Not all kids are perfect at the beginning and there will always be flaws they have to work on. People are always bound to change as they grow up and this is evident with Ren x Jeanne as they later reunite again in their older years, with Ren being now more mature and becoming even more softer after meeting Jeanne again and falling in love / marrying her and starting a family with her.
