The Sacred Swords are all fairly large as a rule, but Kurayami has never looked so comically massive to Kento as it does now, layed across Sophia's knees with her hands resting folded on the guard. Not that she's a very small woman, she's taller than Mei and has a dignity of carriage that makes her seem taller still, but somehow the dark sword dwarfs her when placed against the backdrop of all that snow-white silk. And her head is tipped back, eyes closed, brow wrinkled in what looks like dismay, so without thinking Kento rushes over to her chair and drops to one knee beside it, reaching out to tap her on the shoulder. "Sophia? Are you all right?"

Her eyes snap open, and for a moment he could swear he sees dark clouds parting in them and clearing away, but then she smiles at him as gently and cheerfully as ever. "I'm fine, Kento, I just needed to sit down for a moment. The Sword of Darkness is a heavier burden than I ever expected to carry."

Understanding dawns immediately. "Visions?"

"They're...troubling." She sits up straighter, her usual poise returning slowly but surely even as she pets the sword absently, like she's soothing an anxious dog. "Of course, it's Kurayami's job to prepare its wielder for the worst, so that they can prepare everyone else, but over the centuries I fear it's developed a bit of a cynical streak even past that."

"It wouldn't surprise me."

"I--of course, you more than anyone would know, I'm sorry." A beat, and then--she wilts sideways, pressing her forehead to his, one hand coming to rest against his cheek. "I'm sorry, Kento. That burden wasn't ever meant for you, either."

Startled, he wraps an arm awkwardly around her shoulders. "It's not your fault, it was what had to happen."

"That is true, I suppose, but sometimes I wish there were a different truth for us. For you especially." She stays there for a moment, leaning their heads together, and then shifts upward and presses her lips to his forehead. "You deserved a kinder truth than that."

He's not entirely sure how to respond to that, overwhelmed by simultaneous waves of sadness and affection, and is fortunately saved from having to say anything by Ren making a startled noise behind him and saying, "Uh. Is everything ok?"

Kento stands up and offers his hand to Sophia, who rises as gracefully as ever with Kurayami cradled in her other arm like an infant. "I was briefly overcome by Kurayami's power, but fortunately Kento was here. Did you require assistance?"

"I, um, Kento said he'd spar with me, we were going to. Meet here."

She nods. "I see. May I join you?"

Kento blinks. "Join us for...sparring?"

"Yes, for sparring." She pats Kurayami. "If I'm going to be carrying this, I should be better acquainted with it."

Ren stares at her, looking slightly alarmed, and then says, slowly, "I'm not gonna go easy on you just because you're like my mom."

She beams at him, says, "I would not expect you to," and then leans up on her toes a bit and kisses his forehead as well.

"That's cheating," he mumbles, ears turning bright red.

"Come on, Ren." Kento grins at him. "No such thing as cheating in a real swordfight, you know that."
