Blog #4: Transcendental Meditation
Hello all! Welcome back to our last, and final, week of meditation. This week, I focused on Transcendental meditation, or TM for short. This type of meditation, which comes from the Hindu culture, offers a way to encourage stress management and wellness enhancement through the use of a simple technique. This type of meditation has traditionally been associated with semi-religious means to obtain Atman, or the belief in the soul. In 1957, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi founded the Transcendental Meditation Movement. He first began by teaching his form of mantra meditation following the death of his guru, Swami Brahmananda Saraswati. Maharishi believed that the vedas contained all the knowledge that scientific investigation could reveal. The connection between religion and scientific knowledge is what guided the TM Movement.
Tumblr media
Transcendental Meditation is based on the principle of repeating mantras, which are designated to the meditator by the TM instructor. The technique requires the meditator to sit comfortably with their eyes closed, repeating the mantra for approximately 20 minutes, usually twice per day. When the mantra is repeated, it is supposed to be experienced freely without any particular concentration. However, if other thoughts happen to enter the mind, they may be acknowledged and then discarded without being followed by any associations. The purpose of the mantra is to bring self-awareness as other thoughts become primary. The ultimate goal of transcendental meditation is to experience pure consciousness or restful alertness.
What was real fun about this meditation was that I got to do it with three of my other teammates. During this week, my teammates and I got put into quarantine due to the fact that we were exposed to Covid. So, on one day, because tensions seemed to be pretty high, I made my teammates do transcendental meditation with me twice that day for 20 minutes. In the room, I turned off all the lights and we all laid flat on our backs in bed. To make the experience a little bit more peaceful, I found a meditation playlist on Apple Music to play in the background. For me, the mantra I used to keep myself focus was the most popular one, “OM.”
Tumblr media
After the first 20 minutes were completed, I felt more one with myself and relaxed. During the experience, my body seemed to be pretty heavy, and I felt as though I saw flashing coloring across my eyelids as I got more and more relaxed. The longer I got into the meditation, the less I seemed to notice my surroundings. However, there were times where I did lose my focus, so I tried to return to it with my mantra. After the 20 minutes, I felt rejuvenated in a way, feeling as though I just woke up from a power nap. Doing two sessions in one day though, I felt the first session in the morning was a lot more effective than the one in the evening.
Tumblr media
After everything we learned in class about meditation, I felt as if I was almost a pro on this topic. The first thing that really caught my eye and remembering learning about in class were the mantras and that “OM” was the holiest mantra in Hinduism. Because of that, that is why I decided to use “OM” as my mantra, also. The second thing that stuck out to me in this week’s meditation was that this type of meditation is associated with a means to obtain Atman. In class, we have learned an abundance about Atman and how this is our true self and that it goes beyond our ego or personal identity. Atman is one’s core self. Overall, I did not care so much for this meditation compared to the others. Compared to my other three meditation sessions, I felt as though transcendental meditation was the least structured and I got the least out of it. However, it was a relaxing experience, and it gave me something to do while in quarantine.

Below is more information about the Hinduism culture and transcendental meditation. I had so much fun with this project and I hope all of you enjoyed it as well!

Research Project: Creating graphs for data
The Relationship Between Religious Affiliation and Alcohol Consumption in Youths
Variabales
Explanatory Variable (x) = Religious affiliation: Categorical
Response Variable (y) = Alcohol consumption: Quantitative
Univariate Graphs:
Input
import seaborn import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

print('Describe importance of religion') desc1 = sub2['H1RE4'].describe() print(desc1)
Output
Describe importance of religion count    3555.000000 unique      5.000000 top         2.000000 freq     1366.000000 Name: H1RE4, dtype: float64

Description
The graph ranking the importance of religion to the subject with 1 as “very important” and 4 as not “important at all” (and 7 for those subjects who aren’t religious) is unimodal. Its highest peak is at 2, corresponding to “fairly important.” The graph seems to be slightly skewed to the right because more subjects gave religion a higher importance.
Input

Tumblr media
Description
The graph describing the frequency the adolescents got drunk in the last 12 months, ranking from 1 (”never”) to 7 (”everyday or almost everyday”) is unimodal with its highest peak at 2 (”1 or 2 days in the last 12 months”). It seems to be skewed to the right, with more subjects having gotten drunk less times in the last year, with the exception of the ranking 5 (”3 to 5 times a week”) which rises above 3 and 4 (”once a month” and “2 to 3 days a month, respectively”).
Bivariate Graphs:
Input
#To numeric sub2['H1RE4'] = pandas.to_numeric(sub2['H1RE4'], errors='coerce') sub2['DRUNKFQ'] = pandas.to_numeric(sub2['DRUNKFQ'], errors='coerce')

#bi-variate bar graph C -> C
sub2['RELIGIOUS'] = sub2['RELIGIOUS'].astype('category') sub2['RELIGIOUS'] = sub2['RELIGIOUS'].cat.rename_categories(["Not Religious", "Religious"])
seaborn.factorplot(x="RELIGIOUS", y='DRUNKFQ', data=sub2, kind="bar", ci=None) plt.xlabel('Religious') plt.ylabel('Frequency drunk in the last 12 months')
Output
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Description
The first graph shows the relationship between the rankings of the importance of religion (1 as “very important” to 4 as “not important at all” and 7 as “not religious”). The graph is unimodal, showing that those who related religion as “not important at all” as the group who got drunk most often in the past 12 months followed by the “not religious” subjects. Those who got drunk with the lowest frequency were those who pertained to the ranking of religion as “very important”. The graph appears to be skewed left, showing an inverse relationship between the importance of religion and the frequency drunk in the last year.
The second graph collapses all of the religious subjects into one category to compare them to the non religious group. Those who declared themselves not religious showed a higher frequency of getting drunk in the last 12 months.
