finished watching netflix atla! i think the hate is unjustified lol like all that hate seems a little too intense for what i think the show missed. it didn't hit all the same notes as the original show, yeah, so i'm not sure it quite succeeds as an adaptation, but as a standalone show it's pretty good. and i might have some gripes with the characterization, but there was love in the casting and in the costumes and the world, and that goes a long way for me.

These 3 Stories are the best arcs in Urusei Yatsura, period.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first two arcs are fantastic in terms of story telling and character growth, while the third one perfectly captures UY’s chaotic spirit.

For @starry-sim; thank you for all your lovely comments!
Playtime
Kazuki insisted that the apartment had to be spotless ahead of New Year’s and so, the family armed themselves with cleaning supplies.  Kazuki worked methodically, scrubbing countertops and appliances; Rei was never too far behind, wiping surfaces and liberating them from grime.  Miri, naturally, was allowed to help however she wanted.  She spent a good hour dusting and plumping her stuffed toys before joining them for a tea party.
Later, she bounced into Kazuki’s room.  Rei followed, troubled by the intrusion.  Neither had been in Kazuki’s room for a while.  Rei quickly swept the area.  Materially, he was sure that nothing had changed.  Yet, there was somehow a different feeling to the place.
A moment later, he found his answer.  Miri was statuesque, staring at a photo taped to one of Kazuki’s monitors.
She pointed.  “Who’s that?”
Rei supposed that the photo had been taken in summer.  There were thousands of hydrangeas in the background.  Kazuki was wearing a teal shirt over a striped top.  He was grinning in his crooked way and his arm was around a smiling woman.  Her hair was brown, styled casually so that it fell over one shoulder.  She had green eyes.  She was dressed in a cream cardigan.  An unassuming pendant lay at the base of her throat and Rei thought idly that perhaps Kazuki had given it to her.
“I think,” said Rei, “that’s Kazuki Papa’s wife.”
The picture brought the weight of what had been lost to the fore.  Sickness moved through Rei.  He’d asked Kazuki about it, once, and at Kazuki’s flat, “She died in an accident,” had left the conversation there.  But the accident might have been horrible and the woman might have died in agony and Kazuki must have been so hollow afterwards and Rei hated that he didn’t know.
“Ah, that’s right.”  Kazuki cleared the doorway – stepped closer so that he was standing between Rei and Miri.  Kazuki said, “Her name’s Yuzuko.”
Miri’s eyes glittered.  She cried, “Yuzuko Mama?”
“Huh?  Oh!”  Kazuki laughed.  He glanced at Rei; Rei lowered his chin a fraction and Kazuki placed his hand on Miri’s head, continuing, “I… guess so, Miri.  Yuzuko’s far away, though, so we won’t be able to play with her.”
The tiny shoulder sagged.  Miri folded her arms behind her back and swung her body from side-to-side.  She lowered her gaze so that she was staring at the floor and mumbled, “Is Yuzuko Mama playing with Miri’s mama?”
Kazuki froze – Rei gripped Kazuki’s elbow and asked Miri softly, “What do you mean?”
“Miri’s mama… won’t come here again.  Will she?”
That was Miri all over, Rei thought numbly.  She was too perceptive at times.  Miri knew things without being told – had probably picked up on the way Kazuki had hesitated when she’d asked why her mama wouldn’t be there at the Christmas Party, or the way Rei had paused when Miri’d wondered when her mother was next coming to dinner.
Kazuki took a deep breath.  Then, he said, “You’re right, Miri.  About both things.  Your mama might not be able to visit us here, but she’s playing with Yuzuko.  I bet they’re having a lot of fun!”
Miri looked up.  She smiled and it was as though the sun had torn through the clouds.  “Miri wants to play with them too!”
As one, Kazuki and Rei knelt.  They squished Miri between them; she giggled, her laughter melodic like a bell and Rei said, “Okay, Miri.  But that’s going to be a long while from now.”
“In the meantime, you’ll just have to play with your papas!”

Really dark topic, but what do you think would it take for Enji (pre-AM retirement, obviously) to threaten to, or legit kill Rei, mindcontrolling quirks aside?
mind-controlling quirks aside... i don't think he would threaten to kill her. he'd basically never have something to gain from killing her that he couldn't get some other far easier and less risky way. If she was able to prevent him from abusing Shoto, or threatened to take him/all the kids away, Enji could very much threaten divorce, institutionalization, maybe even arrest, but he can stop her from doing that without threatening to kill her.
If Enji were to kill her, which could happen, i don't think it'd be premeditated. But he has hit her before, and Rei isn't exactly going to do great with heat or flame, so if she intervened at the wrong time in the dojo... it's plausible enough i'd accept it as a fic premise.

I'll take the bait. How is rei's hospitalization not supposed to be something that helped her? The reason she was put there was crazy sure (the one that needed some hospitalization was always endvr) but its not like her kids forgot about her in the end. Also I believe the long time she was there was just for narrative purposes because hrks wanted her to be away.
Sorry I was gonna get around to posting it, I was tired yesterday lol.
I understand it's shown that she got better there. But I don't think enough people understand that 10 years being locked up in an institution is very fucking abnormal.
There is NO type of psychotic break or mental health break down that should lock you up for a fucking decade, unless it resulted in something serious like someone's death. And there is a reason that there is a shift from hiding people away to shifting them back into their community as soon as possible in several countries (not just the US), OR keeping them out of the hospital in the first place with research based protocols. Rei shouldn't have been separated from Shouto for 10 years. That is insane. That literally will make any parent more ill. Every mental health model you read up on will have an emphasis on a support system which usually consists of friends and family.
Endeavor put Rei in a hospital to get her out of his way, not because he gave a shit about her wellbeing.
Tumblr media
Idk if Caleb put a twist on this or not, but it doesn't matter because the obvious tone here is "Oh, I got rid of her, she was getting in my way." Not positive. Then:
Tumblr media
This is not a happy picture. I mean hopeful yes, but Shouto saying "I'll save her" while she's sitting in this small ass room, alone, staring out a window? I mean this is not...good. TEN YEARS???? I just cannot fucking fathom anyone justifying keeping someone (especially with Rei's circumstances) there that damn long. Holy shit.
And I mean, this isn't even a cultural debate. This is straight up not good for a person's wellbeing, to be separated from the real world, including your damn children only to have to wait for your older kids to decide to come visit you--and only when the hospital will allow it-- for ten years. But if we're gonna talk cultural, look up Japan's average psych bed ratio in comparison to other countries. Their reputation is not great lol. And I've seen plenty of commentary saying Rei's character kinda represents Japan's poor mental health care. It's just commentary so it's not fact or anything, but it's interesting I'm not the only one who thinks this about Rei, and I wouldn't be surprised if that was the intention.
BUT, anyway honestly the reason I said that is because I see a lot of "I hope the villains get what Rei got 🥺". And I hate it. Because...she was locked up. Away from her family, no freedom.
Like if the manga is going to go for a "I'll save them no matter what" ending, then why end it by putting them in a place where Shouto felt like he needed to save his mom from?
Also...I mean please. This is shonen, it's a fantasy. We don't have to stick to realistic irl answers to shit. Jail is just stupid, but the hospital ending is even dumber imo. Especially if we're talking ten years like Rei--who was put away by her husband for the purpose of keeping her away from his children.
I mean, let's say we stick as close to realistic as possible without going the jail route--hospitals aren't therapeutic, that's not a healing setting. Mental health care is a community action and the idea is to get people back home with their support systems as quickly as possible. AND! If that's the case then damn, at least show ALL of the UA kids getting their damn counseling sessions too since they've been in two wars? And seen dead bodies of their loved ones? I mean, go all the way with it. But! I have 0% expectations of that happening. So...it's STILL dumb.
Just, I'd rather Horikoshi just go balls to the wall with the fantastical power of love and friendship and acceptance ending. Personally I have no desire to see Tomura or Touya or Toga or anybody end their story in a freaking hospital bed. Just, why. Give them hugs, hold their hands, and send them on their merry, unrealistically sappy way.

I read Lolita a couple weeks ago now. Here are my thoughts:
This book is fascinating. I couldn't shut up about it. The drive to keep reading was squarely in between the one that keeps me reading someone like Falkner (this book is being held together with some incredible mystery adhesive that I must identify/drizzle all over myself) and like. the high I got when I read Atlas Shrugged in 9th grade (I don't like it exactly, but it makes my brain light up as though I've just discovered quarks and now must figure out how to articulate my findings.)
Basically, reading this book is an exercise in reading past the narrator and trying to find scraps of the other characters (especially Dolores) in what he bothers to tell us. It's like panning for gold in a bunch of muck. It's a very active, almost athletic reading experience, if that makes sense.
The beauty of Dolores peeking through all Humbert's mud is that of an ordinary little girl brimming with quiet courage and irrepressible dignity. Dolores Hayes manages to hold her ground against Humbert's best efforts to subsume her and I ended the book just viscerally angry on her behalf. The prevailing sense that I had on finishing Lolita was one of deep injustice.
Nabokov is a treat as always (I've read and loved Speak, Memory and some of Letters to Vera, but this was my first foray into his fiction). The prose was appallingly clever and there were a few little storytelling tricks he pulled that had me all but cackling. The craft of this book is next level.
Reading it was exhausting. I do not think I could have gotten through it had it not been the middle of summer.

anyways so also i'm still thinking about that mary sue jackass on twitter whining about rey still bc the complaint is always 'rey beats kylo ren easily out of nowhere' and that is just fundamentally not what happens in that movie
-- one of the first things we see rey do is absolutely demolish a bunch of guys on jakku, so we know she can fight
-- one of the first things she does in the saber fight with kylo ren is echo her staff fighting motions and try to lunge at him, but she doesn't have the same range w the saber
-- so she holds her own defensively but is literally on the run and ends up pinned between ren and a sudden cliff edge as a crevasse opens up
-- she doesn't actually turn the battle against ren until she
wait for it
USES THE FORCE
(which is exactly what LUKE did!)
also that whole fight kylo ren is literally dying after being gut-shot, bc chewie blasted him with his fkn bowcaster, which is ALSO set-up earlier as being strong enough to send dudes FLYING after a hit
so kylo ren took a GRENADE to the stomach and STILL nearly won that fight!
just absolutely no reading comprehension at all, it's almost like they haven't seen the film more than once and remember it wrong, or are deliberately or unconsciously lying about to serve a reactionary agenda, and it doesn't matter how rey won but rather THAT she won, at all
the only actual mary sue in that movie is kylo ren
the only other mary sue in that movie is poe dameron

Remembering my time on Quotev and Wattpad and how I ended up in microfandoms or whatever of real fandoms because me and my friends (mutuals) were using comments and activity feeds to communicate like we were using forums
It was healthy for my soul... Prevented me from going off the deepend in some really Bad fandoms

top frame from this week…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
listening politely :-) he is cute
also absolutely was not expecting the extended anime-original shi haku and kika flashback!! but it was so sweet!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Romance is when you bring your girl 1 (one) rock every time you come back from war. in the manga we only see a couple of panels of younger kika but her design is so cute i’m so happy to see a little more of her… and the framing of this sequence as still explicitly something rei ou is describing to hou mei & co is cute lol (also just generally nice to learn a little more about their dynamic before tragedy befell them). I’m really surprised the anime team made time for this but it’s the second romantic flashback that’s been invented for this season so I hope this is a type of scene they’ve just committed to adding for some reason and I want a rei ou & baby hou mei flashback very badly, ideally placed right in rei ou’s death scene, i still think it’s cruel of hara to give them the relationship they have but not let us See them pre-fire dragons going to jail
anddd one last hou mei because again he is cute :)
