I like the thing in TNG where they go to see their friends performing in the community play and they say “hey that’s nice” and everyone is like “yeah this is nice” and it’s just a nice time.

The one thing I really like about Barclay in TNG is that his social anxiety makes him offputting and difficult to be around. That's such an overlooked fact of social anxiety and mental illness in general. So often when fiction portrays social anxiety it leaves out how it can look to others and how it can make you difficult to be around.
It's like the opposite of those anti-bullying ads we all saw as kids with someone being bullied for no obvious reason. TNG shows there is a reason as to why people dislike Barclay and that it does not make it anymore okay to be shitty towards him because of that.
I also really appreciate the fact that it is the main characters that are being kind of shitty about Barclay and it is as much on Barclay to work on his anxiety as it is on the rest of the crew to work on their behavior. More mental health narratives need to be like this.
