Medical Whump, I hope you like it :]
Before you read, the story is set in a hospital/experimental lab and there are a few other characters who might pop up later on.
Lamb laid on the rough tiled floor of Pepper's room. The walls were painted a faded red, almost pink, and dotted with flying insects of all kinds. It clearly wanted you to feel comforted, but it was so weathered by age it did the opposite. It was just like every other godforsaken room in the building. "That one looks like you," Pepper pointed at one of the bees above her head. It had long gangly legs and huge, bulging, black eyes. "I'm not an ugly bee," She snapped back with no anger in her voice. If she had the strength to, she would have reached over and smacked Pepper. Reading her mind, he bent over and poked her between the eyes "It's not ugly!" He protested, "It's kind of cute." The paint bled a little around the edges, giving it a hazy quality. At some angles, it even looked like the bee was crying streaks of dark red. "It's freaky, that's what it is." "Exactly, creepy and cute." Lamb shook her head fondly. Pepper had some messed up tastes. She searched the rest of his walls for something interesting. The usual stains and fading children's drawing didn't jump out at her. But, over by the door something caught her eye. A butterfly with scrunched up wings flew just to the side of a fist-sized hole in the wall. "Did you try and punch the butterfly?" Lamb asked, waving her fingers in the direction of the wall. "Huh? Oh yeah, it was looking at me weird." "You have terrible aim." "I'm predicting its movements, Lamb. In just a moment you'll see it fly right into my path." She heard Pepper shifting in his bed. Pushing himself up onto his elbows to stare at her. She ignored him, he stared a lot. It used to freak her out, but he told her that he meant nothing by it. He just liked looking at things. Of course she believed it. Lamb believed just about anything Pepper told her. Maybe the butterfly with the busted wings would fly into the hole. Right through into the other side. Maybe outside was filled with food and freedom and lights that didn't buzz. She folded her tongue back onto itself and tasted the bland paste they ate everyday and the acrid pills shoved down her throat. Maybe. "It still hasn't moved, Pepper." He said nothing, but he tapped the bed-sheets like he wanted her attention. Lamb glanced over at him, a smile teasing on her tired lips. "I-"
Blood was dripping from his nose. Lamb tried to force her body to listen as she screamed at it to get up. The drugs were still making her heavy and clumsy. "Pepper!" Lamb cried as her legs uselessly twitched on the floor, "Please be alright…" "It's okay, Lamb," He murmured, "The butterfly is just scared of what's in the hole." "What?" He didn't move. His knuckles were white with how tight he was gripping the side of his bed. The first thought that Lamb had was that this was just like Bell's episodes. Limbs locking up, far away gaze, and fear-inducing stillness. She never thought it'd be so terrifying to see on Pepper. But that wasn't right. His eyes bore straight into hers. Sharp, intelligent. Bile rose in her throat. Something was really wrong. "Pepper, I don't think I'm seeing things right." He started to tremble like a building before it collapsed. "Pepper?" The red of his walls suddenly felt threatening. If this was the mouth of some monster, than that punch hole was the tunnel further in. "What's in the hole?" Her voice was barely more than a whisper. The sterile stench of Clorox rotted everything in the air. Pepper's breath came in quick, panicked breaths above her. "Hell." His heart monitor beeped in a steady rhythm, in tune with the ever present buzzing of the lights. Her eyes started to play tricks on her. Telling her that the hole was getting bigger, that the butterfly was struggling to pull away. The door flinched under the flickering lights. Lamb looked away. "You're the bee," She grumbled into her shoulder as tears pricked her eyes. He leaned down to run his fingers through her black hair. "Whatever you say, Lambie." His voice sounded guilty to her ears. "You should get your nose checked out." The little laugh he made chased out the last scraps of fear from her body. "Apparently it's my high blood pressure." "You give me high blood pressure, you ass." "Hell's pretty small if it's the same size as your fist." "Of course it's small. All the demons are dressed up in lab coats and drugging us out of our minds." Lamb couldn't help but laugh at the image. "They probably all wear the same devil costume to their Halloween parties." "I bet Dr. Roberts has sparkly red fishnets he digs out for it." "Pepper, gross!" "Maybe he wears them under his lab-coat all day." "Next time he restrains me, I'll check." "Thanks, Lambie." She didn't think he was thanking her for creeping on the doctor. "No problem."

The theory is that consciousness developed as a memory system that is used by our unconscious brain to help us flexibly and creatively imagine the future and plan accordingly. We don't perceive the world, make decisions, or perform actions directly. Instead, we do all these things unconsciously and then about half a second later consciously remember doing them.”
It was a theory to explain how it was possible Conscious processes were that were simply too slow to be actively involved in music, sports, and other activities where split second reflexes are required. But if consciousness is not involved in such processes, then a better explanation of what consciousness does was needed
Meaning actions we believed were made consciously are actually made unconsciously.
Even our thoughts are not generally under our conscious control. This lack of control is why we may have difficulty stopping a stream of thoughts running through our head

ADHD AWARENESS QUOTE 3 OF 3 Friday, October 7, 2022
"Taken together, it's almost a sure sign. The letters float off the page when you read, right? That's because your mind is hardwired for ancient Greek. And the ADHD-you're impulsive, can't sit still in the classroom. That's your battlefield reflexes. In a real fight, they'd keep you alive. As for the attention problems, that's because you see too much, Percy, not too little. Your senses are better than a regular mortal's." - Rick Riordan, The Lightning Thief
