Heyo! I hope it’s okay to ask, but I have a question about character design.
I had the idea for a phoenix themed mage, and was considering having feathers growing alongside their hair. But my second thought was how I don’t know if that would be offensive to indigenous people.
If you don’t know the answer, do you know where I could learn?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The thing about feathers and character designs is that nowhere else uses feathers like we do and the silhouette is very unique to us specifically. Looking up feathers in character design or in specific cultures it always seems to come back to us good or bad. So in order use feathers in character designs you have to try not to use our silhouettes with the feathers. (Eagle feathers, head dress, brooches, bustles,ex.) I feel like people don’t understand the importance of feathers like each one you earn or is past down to you by family. During powwows and ceremonies if one falls off they have to completely stop the competition/ceremony and you are disqualified and you have to give away that feather because you disrespected it. And by law we are the only ones allowed to have eagle feathers 🤷‍♀️ it’s a religious thing not an aesthetic
I say consider what bird you wanna use, what they associated with, and use the feathers in a different manner silhouette wise. Like incorporating the bird’s silhouette and stuff. I like what the warrior cats fandom did and moved the feathers to the shoulders instead of head. Because yes we put feathers on our animals as well for the same reasons.

So i was looking for new codywan fanfiction as i usually do when i come across this post and my brain just, yes.
I love to think it was just inevitable and not really conscious. Like they don't fucking realize because why would they?
One day Cody and some of the ghost company are giving the tour to the new batch of shinies, explaining how things work, the rules, cleaning shifts, where everything is, etc.
They arrive to the bridge where the General is waiting for them with the kindest smile. This is the rutine everytime they get a new batch, Obi-Wan presents himself formally without the kaminoans presense sucking up any friendly encounter and Cody doesn't have to deal with his sad tooka eyes when the shinies are too terrified of him otherwise.
The commander is about to present them to their new general when his comm lights up showing Rex incoming transmition. He looks up to his generals comm also lightning up, they share a concerned look before answering at hte same time.
"Master! thanks the forse-" "CODY WE NEED KRIFFING REINFORCEMENTS" "Re-... calm d..wn! it's.. -ot that bad!-" "SKYW...KER JUST-... XPLODED TH-.. SHIP-"
While the shinies jump on diverse levels of startle, the veterans share an exasperated-concerned look. They had just set off cordinates to Coruscant. Obi-Wan sighs.
"It seems like we'll need to end the tour a little earlier than expected general." Cody takes of his helmet resigned and ignoring the transmitions shouting at eachother.
"Indeed commander. Guess i'll be waiting for you to join us at the war office" Obi-wan signs to Waxer and Boil to follow him.
Cody sighs and lean over to kiss his general when he passes him.
"I'll grab you a cup of tea on my way" Obi-Wan smiles fondly and returns the kiss.
" Thank you dear" He respondes and exits the bridge not realizing that one, his not being followed, two, the deafening silence he just left behind and three, the gaping group of shinies. In his defense, Cody doesn't realize either. He just smiles smitten until the doors close behind his beloved and the commander mask falls in again.
"You heard the general, change the coordinates to... is there a problem?" Rex who is still on is the first to come out of it.
"WHAT IN THE ACTUAL F-" And then chaos.

The Indian Child Welfare Act is under attack, which threatens Native families, Native sovereignty and much more. @NativeChildren helps to protect Native children and keep them connected to their families, community and culture.
On OP’s reservation, Woodland Women is an elder-led group that creates space for mutual support and healing. They hold community talking circles, practice mutual aid, offer free beading classes and share Menominee cultural knowledge. I love these women.
IWRising's initiatives include financial and practical support for Indigenous abortion seekers in the US & Canada, midwifery support & advocacy surrounding repro justice related issues. To donate to their abortion fund
4directionsvote throws down hard to register Native people to vote, to get Native people to the polls, and to fight voter suppression. They’re on the ground in GA right now. These folks have a massive impact. To help keep Native organizers on the ground
@Chi_Nations is a diverse group of Native youth activists who steward the First Nations Garden, which is an important radical Indigenous space here in Chicago
OP’s collective is sponsoring survival stipends for individual Indigenous organizers. Indigenous activists on their list include a traditional birth worker who serves rural communities, a longtime healer and land defender & a Native mother about to be evicted.
Indigenous Justice does a lot of beautiful work supporting the families of MMIW & MMIR, using mutual aid, protest and traditional lifeways as modes of healing. They also work to expose and address disparities in California's carceral system.

Helpless Notes began to get worried as Unseen Gravel’s hiatus grows worrying long, even for an old and closed up Iterator such as him. Not to say that there was silence at all in HN’s can, the disappearance of a 360,000 tons supercomputer doesn’t really go unnoticed in such a small local group such as the one HN and UG were in. Add that to the fact that Helpless Notes was basically the only Iterator UG talked to, and you get a constant questioning, explaining theories, throwing accusations and whatnot from creatures the poor yellow iterator never even saw.

Working on the designs for Kei’s fashion reference helped me decide that they aren’t a minor. I think it’s more interesting if they’re the same age as Craven, the half protege half runaway that Storm takes in and Jay tolerates. Dealing with two older teens trying to figure out how to deal with each other will be a good progression for both their stories.

native 101: how to spot a pretendian
[when speaking of indigenous people i’m discussing ai/an]
first and foremost, this is not to be taken (by non-natives) as permission to then label people native, or not native. this is simply a guide to help you guys discern, at least a little bit better, when we say someone is a pretendian and what that actually means.
tldr: the way they identify themselves (“native american” with no nation; top pretendian nations, etc.), the connection and history they have to their people / nation (this includes reconnecting / “new” natives), how well known “natives” =/= being native, and a brief mention of “looks” and/or word of mouth being the only deciding factor in being “native” (booboo stewart, kelsey chow, etc.), is how real indigenous people can quickly pick out a pretendian in the crowd.
there are plenty of indigenous people in the rpc, so feel free to ask me for more indigenous blogs you can use as a reference. i hope this guide provides you guys with some more insight and understanding; so you can stop asking us the same question, with differing fcs, every other week.
i’m going to put this disclaimer here, so i don’t keep repeating myself later on. if you’re not indigenous, your opinion does not matter when it comes to pretendians, blood quantum, “looks”, etc. but, if you have updated information on a faceclaim (whether they are or are not a pretendian) please send it! education is key.
the steps below does not mean that every single person doing these things are a pretendian! (example: a common pretendian nation is cherokee. malese jow is actually cherokee!) everybody keeps asking “how we know” so i figured to let y’all know what we work through and look for.
how do they identify themselves?
a lot of the time, pretendians will do one of two things.
one. they won’t ever name a specific nation. how many “native” people out there just call themselves native american? they don’t give any other factors, they don’t elaborate, they just leave it as that. for the most part, indigenous people will always give their nations name. we take pride in where we come from and are outspoken on our nations. even cody christian, for example, who has not played a native character and is extremely “not native looking” has his nations listed on his own website. any time you google “cody christian ethnicity” it will come up. so it doesn’t mean natives have to talk about it 24/7 to “be” indigenous, but it simply starts at naming a nation!
two. give the top pretendian tribes. care to take a guess? correct! cherokee! blackfoot is also a popular one, as well. it’s less often you catch a pretendian going for smaller known tribes. i personally think it’s because it’d be easier to look at tribal records and quickly find out they’re not apart of it, but maybe these pretendians just don’t know other nations! any time i hear somebody claim cherokee it’s like an immediate eye roll. (did y’all know there’s also different bands of cherokee?) the biggest culprit would be kelsey chow, who claimed eastern band! the nation themselves had to come out and say there is no record of her. but that was after she’d already taken native roles, where others were boasting about her indigeneity. being known for “being native” does not make you native! case and point.
two contd. speaking of claiming “lesser known” tribes, that still doesn’t give pretendians a pass! could also be you believe them because they’re not as well known. like julia jones claiming chickasaw and choctaw, tyler blackburn claiming comanche, etc. this isn’t an end all be all when people claim well known nations vs not well known ones, but just something to keep in mind! when looking to see if someone is pretendian, we don’t just look at one thing, like this, it’s a combination of basically everything in this post. so don’t let the nations fool you! it’s just one piece of the puzzle.
i will be talking a little later on about people who are known for being native and how harmful that impacts actual native people down below.
how do they connect to their nation?
are they from the rez? do they have traditional clothing? are they actively reconnecting (and what does that look like)?
not every native person has grown up in their culture, that’s not what being native is, but there still should be some sort of connection to them! an example of a native person who did not grow up in the culture and has since been reconnecting is kristin chirico who is cayuga and seneca! kristin has actively been taking the steps to connect to the cayuga and seneca people for the last few years and is very outspoken on that fact. other people have actually grown up in their nation (doesn’t necessarily have to be on a rez, but has had that close contact with their family and people). like kiowa gordon, martin sensmeier, quannah chasinghorse, khadijha red thunder, malese jow, cody christian, etc.
being native doesn’t equal growing up around native people, i want to make that clear. there is a lot of different avenues to be connected to one’s indigeneity, as listed above! but it’s important to see what real connection looks like when we brings up others who have no real connections because they’re pretendians. an example being tinsel korey - from twilight! she played sam’s wife. her real name is actual harsha patel and she’s indian (from india!). she’s claimed for so long that she was indigenous (she finally landed on claiming ojibwe, but has also previously claimed mohawk, cherokee, and cree) yet she had no active connection to the nation she claimed, she didn’t try to reconnect, she didn’t have ancestral grounds, etc.
there are many ways to be native. don’t mistake not being super connected / outspoken as them being fake or not “native enough” and don’t think anybody who is loud about being “native” in hollywood is. context is vital.
well known “natives” =/= being native.
please don’t then go ask “well so-and-so said they’re native and they’re an actor so does that mean they’re lying?” not necessarily! pay attention! get a grip!
kelsey chow, julia jones, tyler blackburn, and blair redford are just some of the ~popular~ pretendians around. but at one point, many thought that they were entirely indigenous. notoriety, getting indigenous roles, or just presenting yourself that way (to seem cool, to get jobs, to... idk) doesn’t mean somebody is inherently indigenous. in my pretendians masterlist, i have even more names there that you might not even realize aren’t native, as well as the phrase “it’s not about who you claim, it’s who claims you.” this doesn’t mean if you can be enrolled in a nation (i.e. blood quantum) but if there’s any record of your ancestors being apart of that nation! or you actively being apart of it / reconnecting.
for example, cody christian isn’t super outspoken on being indigenous, nor has he taken (as far as i know) any native role. that’s his own choice! this isn’t about that. you see him and you see a white man. but his mother grew up on the reservation, so did her parents, and so on. he is claimed by his people, even if he isn’t extremely vocal about it. he doesn’t need to prove that to you, it’s simply inherent. meanwhile, kelsey chow ran up and down hollywood screaming she was eastern cherokee. she then got cast as an indigenous woman (based on her words of being indigenous) and the eastern band said hold up! not on my watch! and explained they did not claim her.
you don’t need a specific blood amount or look to actually be indigenous. you need that ties to your culture and nation (no matter how far back it is) to be indigenous.
booboo stewart (looks).
firstly. he can choke. hollywood stop casting booboo the fool stewart as your indian fav challenge.
secondly! read my post about him here.
booboo stewart is quite possibly the most harmful pretendian there is. he’s made it so far on the notion he’s native. it’s just words. he’s made no effort to connect to his people, to be apart of the culture, but on top of that! they also haven’t claimed him. i’m not sure why they haven’t come out and said he is or is not apart of their nation. i wish they would! he’s taken multiple, countless, numerous roles from real native people.
his “looks” are the only thing he has going for him. he’s an asian man! he’s got small eyes and high cheekbones but non-natives are so stupid they think that means he’s a redskin! this is why we’re so vocal about looks not being important to be considered indigenous. because people see someone with ambiguous features calling themselves generokee and run with it.
i don’t want to write a dissertation on him, but he’s been silent on native issues, not speaking up or spreading awareness, and actively taking roles away from indigenous people. he’s not taking any asian roles the way he’s taking native roles, even though his mother is entirely asian, and he has never spoken about his culture or people apart from “being” native american. i’m not even sure if he, himself, has ever named a nation or if blackfoot got tossed around.
this man is a menace and it’s on sight for anybody who is a booboo apologist. thank you and goodnight.
conclusion.
thank you for reading all of this! send it to your friends, spread the word. i’m not taking any more excuses after this.
i want to end this by saying, again, this does not give non-natives a pass to cast judgements on others for their indigeneity. this can be used as a tool to help distinguish why we call someone a pretendian, or for people to come to us (after reading this) because they think so-and-so is a pretendian because of what we look for! do not go around saying someone is or isn’t indigenous unless a native person has already said so. now, we ask that nobody come to us inquiring “why” we say x, y, z is a pretendian. we’ve laid it all out for you. you don’t have to understand, that’s not your job, but you do have to listen to us about our issues. neewe! thanks.
let me know if you have any other questions i can add to this guide. i’m not sure what non-natives want to know, or don’t know, or are confused about.

"No ets una càrrega"
Barca Femeni x Teen Reader
Summary: request
TW: none
WC: 899
A/N: None of it is proof read and im am really sick rn so there will probably be alot of mistakes. Also I took some creative liberties ig with the request. I'm sorry if you don't like it. I can always rewrite later on.
You are draped in the familiar stripes of your Barca jersey. It was everything you wanted, everything you work so hard for and you were blowing it. You kept missing passes or being a second too late on your runs. You could hear the collective sighs of the crowd after each mistake you made.
It all came to a head when you execute what should’ve been a routine pass. The pass was short and was intercepted by an alert opposing player. In a sloppy attempt to halt the opposition, you kick the back of her legs, sending her tumbling. The ref immediately blowed her whistle and showed you yellow.
“Are you fucking serious. That’s not a yellow! She fucking dove. You can’t be- ” You spat at the ref before being pulled back by a pair of strong arms.
“Calmat! No val la pena.” Mapi’s words were strong but weren’t enough to bring you out of your rage.
(Calm down! It's not worth it)
“Let go of me Mapi. I’m not a fucking child. This ref is blind as shit and needs to fucking hear it.”
The ref without hesitation reach into her pocket. Alexia and Irene had run in at this point, pleading with the ref to reconsider. You knew you had fucked up when you say the second yellow then red. Not only had you harmed your team with your horrid performance but you’d just burdened them to finish a game a player down.
After being escorted off the field, the weight of disappointment settled on your shoulders, and as the door closed behind you, a wave of frustration and tears overwhelmed you. You couldn’t believe how stupid and useless you were. Nothing seemed to make sense, you had trained so hard but it wasn’t enough. You weren’t good enough. You needed to be better.
You found yourself in gym, it was the only thing that made sense. If you trained harder, you’d be better. It was straightforward, clear cut.
Unbeknownst to you, Alexia, Mapi, and Ingrid observe from a distance, concern etched on their faces. After the match they went looking for you, worried because you were no longer in the locker room. In a way you were lucky they were there. You had been sprinting on the treadmill as fast as you could. After a couple of minutes you felt dizzy, your legs were starting to give in but you kept going. And you kept going.
‘Keep going, keep going.” You muttered to yourself
As the treadmill relentlessly propels you forward, your breaths become ragged, and your legs wobble beneath you. In a sudden, unexpected moment, your knees buckle, and the world tilts. Just as the gym floor rushes up to meet you, someones arms wrap around you, preventing a painful collision.
Ingrid's firm grip supports your weight, preventing a full collapse, while Mapi and Alexia rush to your side. Concern etched on their faces deepens into genuine worry. Ingrid, with her characteristic calm, reassures you, “Relax elskling, I’ve got you.”
It must have been a few moments when you woke up again. You were no longer in the gym, you were lying on a couch with your head laying on Mapi’s lap.
“Oh Pequena, you are okay.” Alexia says in her best English
You sat up. You didn’t know what to say.
“Què està passant? Per què et vas empènyer així?” Alexia asks gently, reverting back to her native Catalan
(What's going on. Why did you push yourself like that.)
You avoided their eyes, unable to say respond, your words choked by shame and frustration.
“You don’t have to carry this alone. We’re here for you, no matter what elskling.” Ingrid adds, while grabbing your hand.
With a shaky breath, you finally open up, your voice tinged with frustration and vulnerability. “I just.. I want this so badly. And tonight, I felt like ai was letting everyone down. I felt useless, and I thought if I train harder, push myself, I could make up for it and get better.”
“Entenc-“
(I understand-)
“But you don’t understand Alexia. You’re la Reina, you are the best and you deserve to be here. I don’t, im a liability out there. Every misplaced pass, every late run, it felt like I was letting the entire team down.”
“You deserve to be here too. Jonatan picked you for a reason.” Ingrid adds
“You don’t get it! No matter how hard I try, it’s never enough. I’m sick of feeling like a burden. Sick of failing when it matters.”
“No ets una càrrega. Estem aquí perquè creiem en tu i en el que ets capaç.” Mapi chimes in while wrapping her arm around your shoulders, her touch grounding.
(You're not a burden. We're here because we believe in you and what you are capable of.)
“I just… I don’t know how to fix this.”
“No cal que arregleu això sol. Estem aquí per a tu.” Alexia calmly tells you.
(You don’t need to fix this alone. We are here for you.)

Aita for not making any of my characters, that I have to crank out daily, pansexual/polysexual/omnisexual specifically and only making them bi?
🏳️‍🌈👶🏼 so i can recognize this later lmao also I'm not panphobic or anything, this isn't about the validity of the label, pan is fine.
So i (20snb bi) have a project I'm working on where I take all the characters from a specifc media I'm into and pair them up with each other to make every possible ship kid from every possible ship(excluding characters who are kids themselves or are related or something, that shit is gross). Basically taking every character and pairing them up with another and creating a kid I think they'd have. Its a big project with lots of characters and I'm easily over 400 at this point. I really enjoy this, even if I'm not even 25% complete.
However I set a schedule for myself that at least one ship kid needs to come out each day which, considering I draw them, color them and give them some development and some even have siblings, (The refs themselves easily take me an hour to an hour and a half) I have to make lots of them quickly to keep up with my daily grind. I've been doing this project for over a year and although it's stressful, I can get them out quickly with breaks for myself.
Their character sheets all have some pretty basic info like their name, gender, pronouns, personality and more but it also includes their sexuality/orientation. I have a pretty basic list of options for what their sexuality will be: straight, lesbian, gay, Enbian, bi, Aro, ace and aroace with a few random things like polyam, WLW and a good amount of the something-loving-something/juvelic terms. I did this because, well, there's not many entirely unique orientations outside of them and although I love mogai/xenogenders and complex identities, I dont want to potentially drag up discourse or bring problems to my budding art blog over it. Its just not worth it to me to turn something I really care about on its head, even if I like microlabels.
In this case, I'm using bi as an umbrella term as most of the other terms share the same definition with slight variations in wording or action but not much difference in practice. We all like everyone, it's basic stuff. However, apparently this is a problem.
I've gotten one or two anons asking me questions about my guides asking some kind stuff like is this lesbian ship kid a butch or femme or Is this picture of them now or just at the age you put on the ref and other harmless stuff. Then things got rude with some Nbphobia but thrice now I've gotten asks:
1. Asking snarkily if im a panphobe
2. insulting me for not specifically writing pan or Omni and just writing bi.
3. Saying that I "clearly dont care about pansexual representation." Then brought up how my primary oc is native american so i clearly care about representation but that oc used to be a sona and I'm native?? Its confusing. (And Lowkey racist shit to just assume any native character is a "diversity quota" character instead of just a person existing but I digress-)
Im not pan, im bi so ig these people assume I'm not cool with pan people which isnt true? I have nothing aginest them, they are just pretty similar and I dont feel like it matters if they are specfically bi or pan or poly or any other label. I don't go into details like that for any other sub-group, not even pronouns and I included combinations and some common Neopronouns. I understand the importance of representation but my project has less than 50 people looking at it every day, Im not netflix or something. I'm one guy on the most LGBT blogging site with a big project and very little audience, I'm not showing people who wouldn't already know what pan is that pansexuality exists.
This project isn't that deep considering the characters in question aren't human/dont have human characteristics.(no it's not hazbin/helluva) Also ive never spoken about lgbt discourse or stated anything remotely close to it beyond the guides just passively having characters who are an LGBT identity. I've not even mentioned all the potentional orientations they could have so I'm not sure where/why this came up in the first place. The most politcial things ive said are calling out a creator in my fandom who outed themselves as a transphobe and mentioning im pro-palestine. That's it.
I mean this is pretty low stakes, I can just block these people and be done with it and this some seriously online shit but I just wanna check.
Am I being an asshole for just writing bi instead of specifying their mspec label because I have to produce characters quickly and I don't see enough of a difference to warrant a change/specification that would ultimately slow and clog an already stressful and complex project?
I dont think I am but idk lol
What are these acronyms?
