Here's my take on the wicked queen from the Brothers Grimm Snow White to accompany my Snow White design. It took forever to land on colours for the second outfit but I'm actually pretty happy with how these ended up. I gave her a hand mirror, just one out of many mirrors in her possession probably. I also gave her a name for my own headcanon of her.

I’m back with another vintage style cover redesign! This time for the wonderful book “Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow” a retelling of East of the Sun, West of the Moon by the very talented Jessica Day George. A lot of her younger aimed books have lovely illustrated covers but the more YA ones all have cover model ones and I thought they deserved an illustrated one as well (may do her Princess Trilogy next we’ll see)

Anyway here’s the cover done in a more market paperback style (hence why our heroine is waaay more glam then she actually is in the book xD) as I wanted to practice a more lineless feel.

With a logo-less, none faded version as well

Racist Russian BS

So, for some reason I found out that my favorite Russian fairytale had an animated version. I’m talking about “Alyosha Popovich and Tugarin zmey” which is a story about how Russian princess had an affair with Mongolian dragon and then Alyosha killed the dragon because HoW dArE hE fUcK tHe PrInCeSs.. This is standard Slavic shit because in our mythology dragons have a human form which is irresistibly hot and they are also so amazing at sex that people who spent the night with a dragon lose interest in having sex with humans completely.

Anyways, how do you think Russians depicted a Mongolian dragon who is supposed to be Adonis level of hot and superhuman sex machine in the unholy year of 2004?

I honestly wish I was joking. For comparison, here’s an illustration of the fairytale from NINETEENTH CENTURY (1868 to be more precise):

Tugarin is the one on winged horse. So i’m asking: WTF Russia? If your art from 21st century is more racist than art from 19th century, you’re definitely doing something wrong. I would like to ask Russians on Tumblr if they have an answer, but I think the answer is Putin, am I right?

Anyways, I wanted to draw Tugarin in my own way, just to cleanse my mind from this racist BS and I ended up with this:

I think he’s hot enough. Also, I mixed Asian and Slavic dragon designs because he is in a Slavic story, but he also is Asian, so I kinda wanted his design to reflect this. Would you watch this fairytale as an anime with cool fights? I know I would lol. It’s much better than alll the racism that’s happening in the cartoon. Which is a shame, because the story is good and the characters are fine. The only problem that the cartoon has is racism (and some misogyny, but that’s normal for Russian cinema in general, so I didn’t touch on that).

Concept sketches for the Three Little Pigs. These aren’t the final designs, they’re kinda just trying to get the Vibes? I want each brother to be pretty distinct in appearance and personality and these sketches kinda show the direction I’m heading. I’m still deciding how far I’m sailing into Uncanny Valley for human/pig combined physical traits. First is Swinehart, second is Hamstead, last is Boarman.

I know you already have your own designs for the Philip sisters in Tftoml but I had these designs for them saved and wanted to finally share them with you.

Ok first off, These look Amazing, and might be better than my character design! I love how Morgan also resembles Rachel Covey really well and Kid! Sofie looks slightly like Giselle and has Robert’s nose! Thank you so so much for designing them, I hope you’re enjoying Tftoml and I’m almost done writing Chapter 2 on paper. I’ll post when I’ve updated my fic!

February’s CDChallenge theme was to redesign a fairytale character as a warrior, and so I decided to redesign Alice in Wonderland as a warlock! My idea was “what if Alice never left Wonderland?”; and so here she is, imbued by Wonderland and the court of the Queen of Hearts. I’ve also put the concept art, which includes a “Through the Looking Glass” version, under the cut. (My initial concept had both designs separated/reflected by a mirror, but I ran out of time to do both) It was a fun challenge, and I really enjoyed participating this time 😊

The Wild Swans

This illustration is inspired by the fairytale "The Wild Swans" (Hans Christian Andersen's version of the tale) which has has a ton of variations like: "Six Swans" or "The Seven Ravens", etc. The basics of the story include a widowed King with 7 to 12 children and an evil stepmother that curses all of the children except the youngest daughter into swans. To save her brothers the youngest is given a terrible task involving nettles. My favorite retelling of this fairytale is easily 'Daughter of the Forest' by Juliet Marillier (I would recommend it for an older teens/adult fiction audience). Have any of you ever read it? Or let me know your favorite version of the fairytale I am always looking for more! :D

Tada! Another 80’s cover attempt redraw. I started the first one a couple of years ago but gave up, but the book, “Stepsister” by Jennifer Donnelly, a beautiful dark fairytale of what happens to the stepsisters after Cinderella, was so good I had to try again, so here we go!
