Everyone should be given a second chance. Even the wicked.

It took Bucky quite a while to reach that conclusion; his own path to rectifying all the bad he had done, had been forced to do, for Hydra had been a long and rocky one. He wasn’t like Natasha, who felt that enough good deeds balanced the bad. He had killed people, children. He had destroyed people’s lives. People were still feeling the effects of his actions decades later. For Bucky, there was no justice. Justice would have been putting him 6 feet under, and calling it a day, even if he had done all of it against his will.

When those thoughts kept him awake in bed at night, trying to find out who he was and what he stood for, so too did the thought that others could be going through the same experience. Little to no opportunity, tricked by people smarter and more ruthless, or just plain taken against their will, made to do unspeakable things without their consent.

Bucky couldn’t make up for all the wrongs done by his hand, but he could give people the opportunity to choose, something different, something less destructive - and he could guide them through it, having had to find his identity and purpose from a blank slate. He didn’t do it alone; Steve, Natasha, Sam, and Sharon helped. And he couldn’t have done it without them. So maybe others needed someone to sit in their corner too.

And that’s what he had done for the last couple of years. With the back pay from the military (that he was granted after sitting long trials to determine his guilt or innocence) he bought a small plot of land in Indiana; even though they had moved to New York when he was practically too young to remember, there was something wholesome about returning home, away from the city, where he was left with the quiet and the stars. And Bucky busied himself by finding those that did not want to continue on the bad path they were on. Let people know they could be something different, and they had someone in their corner.

Which was what brought about this night, with Alpine, Bucky’s white cat, sleeping on his lap as he sat reading a book. A knock at his door had him looking up to the foyer. He wouldn’t put it past those trying to kill him to be polite, so he gently took the sleeping cat, and put him safely in the kitchen, where he could exit if things got stabby. He moved carefully to the door, ready for whatever might be on the other side. Opening the door, he tilted his head to the side, ❛ Can I help you? ❜
