Context, me (27M) and my roommate (29M) have been splitting rent on a bachelor's pad since he graduated college (I'm homeschooled and run one of my dad's business branches).

For the past five years, we've gone to my family's place for Thanksgiving dinner. This is because we have some friends who only live where my family lives, and also because I have a better relationship with my father and stepmother than he does with his father and stepmother.

Last year, our friends who live there moved on and so we won't be able to see them at my family's place anymore. My roommate said that we should take this chance to have Thanksgiving dinner somewhere else. I thought this meant that we are either hosting our own Friendsgiving at our place, or that we're joining a Friendsgiving with our mutual friends.

No. He's invited to Thanksgiving with his side of the family. I hate his father and stepmother. He frankly doesn't like his dad and has a complicated relationship with his stepmother (she both babies him too much and also puts undue pressure on him because "he's her favorite son", despite having sons of her own). She has messed with every one of our friends and we all hate her, including my roommate's exgirlfriend.

His parents are essentially very high status and are "big wigs" and no one can visit their place on a whim. This year, they decided they want to hold a feast and have "deigned to invite" my roommate and also another one of our friends.

I don't think we should go, I'm thinking of telling my roommate that we should say fuck you (politely) to his parents and do our own thing.

He thinks that things have changed (it hasn't) and it would be a good show of diplomacy for us to go. I think it's unnecessary and that his parents would just have to deal with not having a closer relationship with him. If we refuse, then we can't go to my family's Thanksgiving either or else it'd turn into a whole Thing, but we can do something else. WBTA if I convince him that we should just do Thanksgiving on our own?

u/cerealisbadactually replied: that was my roommate not my boyfriend, and my stepmother knows i hate cereal. we had simple and cheap items on our registry like blankets, table covers, and chair protectors, and she went and spent $2000 on five years' worth of cereal subscription. forgive me for being annoyed at having to sign a thankyou note for that.

He's given me more information on why he thinks we should go, namely because his parents wants to do an acknowledgement of the people who have worked for them (our friends and I have all done a lot of jobs for them over the years). They "forgot" to invite me and some other people, and only invited their favorites. But there was more communication and now a lot more people are going together. I'm still not happy about going but it'd be a bit more bearable if my sister and her fiance are also going to be there.

S5 Ep 39 Part 1: Blue Eyes White Dragon Wife Fight

Ah, back from the long Covid slumber (which holy hell do not catch Covid, the long Covid that follows it is a nightmare, and in several ways is worse than the actual Covid) Technically, bro and I still have it, but it’s been a while since we’ve posted and so for now lets just write a post and see what happens?

The show left us off at fight pit where Aknadin tossed Seto’s not-a-girlfriend onto a platform over viewing a bunch of man-sized spikes. Been a while since we’ve been suspended over a good indoor fight pit with a bottomless chasm underneath it. The last time we were in one was Pegasus, wasn’t it? Which is fitting since we now have Pegasus’ item sitting in Aknadin’s eye-hole.

Kissara is kind of over the whole “I have a pokemon in my soul” thing and either refuses to show she has a dragon in her butt because 1.) she doesn’t want a powerful country to have access to her dragon powers or 2.) she just doesn’t freakin care about the fate of the world and this current pharaoh of the week because she’s that OP.

I’d like to think it was the the latter, but she’ll not really tell us what her whole deal is this episode anyway. So guess away. In defiance of his Dad/coworker, Seto decided to jump head first off of a ledge, probably feeling a little jealous that Yami got to do that last episode.

Now don’t be deceived from my caps, the girl said “thank you, sir.” and that’s about it. To be honest, even that much feels like character development because she actually had a speaking line.

So while Seto is talking up about how he’s going to save this girl and be the hero of the day, and while Seto is apparently a match for Pharaoh and Bakura, he is no match for these random ass prisoners with one single spider. This was not helped by the fact that they’re suspended over a chasm held up by some flimsy bike chains.

So really it was the flimsy bike chains that couldn’t handle one single spider, to give Seto more credit.

So it’s going to take every fiber of my long Covid ridden being to not say that Kissara “morbed out”, (man oh man I just want to say Morb in all caps and it’s a very unfortunate symptom of this illness) however, she did glow bright blue and shoot a dragon out of her ass.

And so she used her face lasers, and Egypt was like woah.

In the literal show Shimon was like “ah, is the power of the Egyptian Gods?” So that we the audience could see that Blue Eyes Egyptian Kissara was at the same level as Yami’s God cards. It was to prove that Seto maybe could be a Pharaoh, depending on if this girl would please become a paper card which at the moment she is too sleepy to do.

But by this logic...wouldn’t that make Kissara the proper Pharaoh of Egypt? Just saying. I mean she is mad sleepy and so wouldn’t do much ruling, but for that I think this city would be kind of thankful after the run their last few Pharaoh’s put them through.

Off screen she got Seto out of fight pit and then decided to just fall asleep in his arms like a small puppy.

Y’all every ship is valid and good here and so I don’t want to knock the ship too much but wow this girl is snoozing a lot of the time right? I was expecting more than this, and I’m telling you, my expectations were extremely low. But who knows, maybe she wakes up and has speaking lines in later episodes?

Anyway, Kissara exited stage left and then Seto and Aknadin had a fight that Seto honestly thought he would not be having when he woke up this morning.

Aknadin inferred he’d have to force Seto’s hand and like...I dunno, you put his coma patient/not girlfriend/dragon in a pit I think you screwed it, Aknadin.

Back in Kul Elna, (which Bro just informed me is spelled with a U not an E) Bakura is monologuing to his only friend left in the world AKA this tablet, which I find out later is called “the millennium stone.” and I don’t know how to contain that knowledge.

While he’s here talking to the rock, Bakura is also letting us, the audience know why the hell he is even doing this. A nice little bit of summary for just in case any of the audience went and caught Covid while watching this season and currently can’t cook a soup without remembering to stir the garlic before it burns completely black. Which I did. Yesterday.

So originally I had a set of caps that was like “Zork was the most popular computer game before Doom how did Yugioh manage to use the same name?” and that was when my bro told me “Rachel I’m so sorry. It’s spelled with a C.”

Freakin Zorc.

My mind is fully lost at this point but that one sure got me.

Anyway, Zorc with a C wants to have a talk.

At first I was like ... Shada??? You mean the guy you’ve seen several times at this point, Bakura? But because Bakura doesn’t have long Covid like I do, he knew immediately that this key was metaphorically while I sure didn’t and was like “freakin how many keys??? Did I miss something the last 5 seasons?”

And because Yugioh loves irony, it didn’t take long for Bakura to realize he put the cart before the horse when he tossed the Pharaoh down that hole.

Also tossed the horse down the hole.

Lots of things in the Yami hole.

Yo what if...I mean that horse died off screen, right? Spoilers--it’s not there in the next part of this episode so let me just........add that to the death count.

Death count is 7,805,845,571 by the way.

That’s right Yugioh is going to pull a Rumpelstiltskin on us!

Damn! Here I thought I’d never be thinking about Once ever again but nah, Yami’s magical powers are contained in his freakin name.

Was this the intention of the writers of the whole series? Probably not, but do I think it’s a fun little twist--yeah, that’s fun. Like we know that Bakura’s ring can find his heart’s desire, so when it’s a name that isn’t a tangible object, that’s actually a pretty good twist.

I would normally try and add up all the dots we know about Yami and his history but at this point it’s looking less like Seto killed Yami, despite what that massive tablet and Ishizu told us. But Ishizu has been wrong before, so I’m not gonna worry about it. My head is blissfully thought free because of the long Covid and we’re gonna keep it that way.

Anyway, thanks for being so chill as we take it very easy through this summer of sickness. (in fact, bro told me I had to fix one of the caps and I’ll be real: I forgot which one it is, and I can no longer tell so forgive me if I also just left a turd in the caps there. eh, long Covid) I have no idea when the next episode will go up. messy afternoons | chiaki nanami x reader

“Do you need help s/o?”

“No, I got it!” s/o grunted, bringing chiaki’s boxes into their apartment.

Long story short, s/o gave their apartment keys to chiaki as a valentine's day gift. They both went on and on about how amazing it would be to finally live together, after a year of dating.

S/o made sure to tidy up everything, and moved furniture and items with the help of hajime and nagito. The place now is cleaner than it ever has been, maybe it was worth giving up 20 dollars to the both of them.

“Woah s/o, the place is amazing! Did you do this all yourself?” Chiaki asked as she explored the area.

“U-uhm,” S/o sweat dropped at the question, if they told her they’d done it themselves, would she be impressed? S/o gave a small smile, but had big plans. “Yea! I-it was pretty tough..”

Chiaki gave a soft smile and helped s/o carry the boxes, one by one.

“Great, now I feel bad…”

Shaking off the thought, s/o carried the boxes to Chiaki’s room. The room was a pale peach, fairy lights dazzling around the room. On one side a soft bed was placed and on the other were shelves with cds, figures, gaming consoles, etc. It compared nothing with her little office she used for streaming.

The place was fit for her.

As they brought in the last boxes filled with her clothes, Chiaki plopped onto her bed. S/o chuckled and lied beside her. Chiaki turned to s/o and caressed their face.

“You know.. This was fun.”

“Really? All we did was move boxes and decorate your room..”

Chiaki giggled, her hand falling onto s/o’s hand. “Yea, but it was nice to spend some one-on-one time with you… I thi-” S/o gasped, “joking, joking!” Chiaki giggled softly.

S/o smiled, it was new, seeing Chiaki laugh and engage more. S/o giggled along with Chiaki, when suddenly her phone rang. Chiaki gave a sorry smile and picked it up.

S/o had a confused expression as Chiaki clicked the speaker button.

“Hey s/o… did you tell Chiaki you did this all yourself?” Hajime questioned, but s/o could just tell he had a smirk on his face… what an asshole.

S/o had daggers in their eyes but tried to play it cool, “Well I did, didn’t I? After all, you couldn’t have, you’re the one who couldn’t tell how many sides an octagon has.” S/o smirked, this was always the weak spot of Hajime.

Hajime paused and then came back, “That's it I’m coming to your apartment, you little shit.”

Chiaki and S/o laughed loudly before Hajime ended the call. Their laughter died down and they both went into a comfortable position to cuddle. S/o’s head was on Chiaki’s chest while Chiaki put her arms around their back, nuzzling into their neck.

The atmosphere around them had a comfortable feeling. The feeling when it rained while the clouds covered the sky, wind in all directions.

“This was one of the most fun days i’ve had in a while, thank you s/o.”

“Anything for you, love.”

15 minutes passed by after a loud noise coming front he living room.

“Alright s/o, where are you?” Said an angry Hajime, followed by Nagito, “Oh hello Chiaki, s/o! Hajime kind of dragged me along but your room looks nice!”

S/o sweat dropped, looking at Chiaki. When suddenly Chiaki swiftly turned to S/o, a determined expression on her face, “Now I can show you the magic of co-op! Come on s/o, you and me against Nagito and Hajime!”

Chuckling at her childish actions, s/o got a pillow for both Chiaki and them, turning to Hajime and Nagito with a playful expression.

“Come and challenge us, if you dare!”

Yea, it was gonna be a messy night.

So my perception of the song has changed to reflect this part in his life. I been listening to the song since the album came out in 2006, and it had been 11 years until I read the biography. Miri: Which of your works is the most memorable to you? I don’t necessarily mean favourite or best work, it could be the work that taught you the most making it or that holds a special reason in its creation.

Kizu: Hm, for some reason the sleeping elves!Sefikura popped up in my head. It was certainly one of those that took me weeks to finish. I learned so much about coloring doing that piece. Seph's thighs were thickened with layers of white and purplish white and blueish white and orangeish white because I couldn't get the pale tone right. I even beat myself over it for days. Thank god it turned out... not so bad...?

Miri: Comments on the reblog, or in the tags. Do you have a preference?

Kizu: Comments ANYWHERE. But anyway, from what I've seen, people are less likely to comment on the reblog because they feel like it's rude or something, but if you feel like that, please comment all the craziest thing and reactions in the tags. UwU I dare speak for all of the creators out there that WE LOVE COMMENTS. Especially the squeally over the top ones.

Miri: Who is your favourite character from the FFVII setting? What do you love about them?

Kizu: Aside from the obvious choices (the blond angry smol and the silver-haired mean assholery tol), in terms of characterization (and in-game stat), Cid Highwind is my lowkey favorite. Those moments featuring Cid Highwind is either hilarious or super inspirational. His speeches about his dream, the power of mankind and science, the planet Gaia, the goddamn tea... gosh. Cid Highwind gives the most powerful speeches and the most hilarious profanities.

Miri: Favourite media to work in?

Kizu: I actually have a love hate relationship with it but, pencil and paper.

Miri: Inquiring minds have asked if you have any tips for dealing with art block/slump.

Kizu: Hmmmm. Maybe... try to brainstorm exactly how you want to draw the thing. Come up with keywords that you can search by (aka finding references). Read/watch something visual and may inspire you to draw the thing since references can pop up in those visual media.

If nothing of the above works, force your stupid hand to at least draw *something* (Like, if you draw something that would involve a human, sketch their head first with a circle, and try to expand the face, where the face is facing towards, then expand pose from there with skeletal-ish pose.) If you don't know how poses work then feel free to look it up. At least, learn how to *sketch* poses with stick figures since that will save you from so much pain.

You can also listen to music that put you in certain moods.

Miri: Is there a character/idea you haven’t gotten to yet that you really want to do?

Kizu: I suppose most of the stuff I had always want to doodle *cough* frillysmexykinkydressesandflowyconcubineoutfitsandfancyhairdosforCloud *cough* I have done... to some extent. There's so much more Emperoth x Cloudcubine thing I want to do though... :Q_ I-I have this... constant need of putting Cloud in dresses. He just... looks too gorgeous in dresses. Mmm, Cloud in dresses...

Come to think of it, I kinda want to try doodling something fluffy or... school life-ish too...?

Miri: Any remake thoughts or hopes you’d like to talk about?

Kizu: 1. Have a section of land that looking towards Midgar that can trigger a flashback cutscene of Zack's final stand... and maybe his yellow flower...

Kizu: I don't know... most of the headcanons I enjoy are all from you guys, like Sephiroth being a Scorpio, or he being the one breaking Ifalna and smol Aerith out of Shinra back then, or Cloud being a little shit... Usually I would think more about AUs. If it's an AU then I'd like to see more school life AUs. Listening to Bolbbalgan4 songs makes me think of a Cloud doodling stick figures on Seph's notebook in the library and they're playing footsies under the table ughf.

Miri: Favourite party idea when playing FFVII? They don’t have to actually work, so much as you like the idea of them together as a fighting party.

Kizu: I usually go for the OP team or the most practical so... Cloud Aerith Cid in disc 1 (I usually have Cloud as the healer/tank/everything else XD Aerith as main magic damage bc she is stronk with spells, and Cid). After that the team is Cloud Yuffie and Cid because of Yuffie's morph ability and her agility is stupid. Nothing can hit Yuffie... ever.

Drawing Sephiroth, albeit very satisfying for the eyes, is a great burden. That ridiculous man has a too high standard for his face alone. And then there comes that stupid, geographically mountainous plane of a body, and his 84 miles of legs. Not to mention that unbelievable luscious hair. And don't make me rant on those *eyelashes* that stabs through the fabric of space and time itself.

‘We Are All Accumulating Mountains of Things’

It’s easier than ever to buy things online. It’s so easy that Ryan Cassata sometimes does it in his sleep. Cassata, a 24-year-old singer/songwriter and actor from Los Angeles, recently got a notification from Amazon that a package had been shipped to his apartment, but he didn’t remember buying anything. When he logged onto his account and saw that a fanny pack and some socks were on the way, he remembered: A few nights back, he had woken up in the middle of the night to browse--and apparently shop on--Amazon.

He shops when he’s awake, too, buying little gadgets like an onion chopper, discounted staples like a 240-pack of gum, and decorations like a Himalayan salt lamp. The other day, he almost bought a pizza pool float, until he remembered that he doesn’t have a pool. “I don’t really need most of the stuff,” he tells me.

Thanks to a perfect storm of factors, Americans are amassing a lot of stuff. Before the advent of the internet, we had to set aside time to go browse the aisles of a physical store, which was only open a certain number of hours a day. Now, we can shop from anywhere, anytime--while we’re at work, or exercising, or even sleeping. We can tell Alexa we need new underwear, and in a few days, it will arrive on our doorstep. And because of the globalization of manufacturing, that underwear is cheaper than ever before--so cheap that we add it to our online shopping carts without a second thought. “There’s no reason not to shop--because clothing is so cheap, you feel like, ‘why not?’ There’s nothing lost in terms of the hit on your bank account,” Elizabeth Cline, the author of Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion, told me.

Shopping online also feels good. Humans get a dopamine hit from buying stuff, according to research by Ann-Christine Duhaime, a professor of neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School. “As a general rule, your brain tweaks you to want more, more, more--indeed, more than those around you--both of ‘stuff’ and of stimulation and novelty,” Duhaime wrote in a Harvard Business Review essay last year. Online shopping allows us to get that dopamine hit, and then also experience delayed gratification when the order arrives a few days later, which may make it more physiologically rewarding than shopping in stores.

Sites like Amazon have made it especially easy to shop. In 1999, the Seattle retailer patented a one-click buying process, which allows customers to purchase something without entering their shipping address or credit card info. It launched its Prime program in 2005, and now more than 100 million people have signed on to pay $119 a year for “free” two-day shipping. As a result, most other major retailers offer free shipping too. Returning stuff is a little more difficult--shoppers usually have to print a label and then go to the post office or a UPS or FedEx site to return packages. Many wait too long, or decide the hassle isn’t worth it because the stuff was cheap anyway. A recent NPR/Marist poll found that nine in 10 consumers rarely or never return stuff they’ve bought online.

Justine Montoya, a caregiver in Los Angeles, buys all sorts of stuff online--baby formula, clothes, household goods. She estimates that she shops online twice a week. “It’s just so easy--you click a button, and it’s on its way,” she told me.

In the last few months alone, I bought an $18 smart watch from Wish.com that I will probably never use, a second Kindle because it was on sale and I am worried my first Kindle is going to die soon, an electric space heater I no longer need, and a pair of wireless earbuds that I had hoped would allow me to charge my iPhone and listen to music at the same time, but that instead just fall out of my ears whenever I put them on. I also bought, on Amazon, a (used) book about hiking in the Sierras for $1.99, only to find the exact same book in a box of my stuff in my parents’ basement. I didn’t return any of it.

In 2017, Americans spent $240 billion--twice as much as they’d spent in 2002--on goods like jewelry, watches, books, luggage, and telephones and related communication equipment, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, which adjusted those numbers for inflation. Over that time, the population grew just 13 percent. Spending on personal care products also doubled over that time period. Americans spent, on average, $971.87 on clothes last year, buying nearly 66 garments, according to the American Apparel and Footwear Association. That’s 20 percent more money than they spent in 2000. The average American bought 7.4 pairs of shoes last year, up from 6.6 pairs in 2000.

All told, “we are all accumulating mountains of things,” said Mark A. Cohen, the director of retail studies at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business. He sometimes asks his students to count the number of things they have on them in class, and once they start counting up gadgets and cords and accessories, they end up near 50. “Americans have become a society of hoarders,” Cohen said. Montoya said she has more stuff now that she has started shopping online: “It’s easier to accumulate more, and it’s easier to spend more.”

At the same time we are amassing all this stuff, Americans are taking up more space. Last year, the average size of a single-family house in America was 2,426 square feet, a 23 percent increase in size from two decades ago, according to the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies. The number of self-storage units is rapidly increasing too: There are around 52,000 such facilities nationally; two decades ago, there were half that number.

Of course, not everyone is a part of this hoarding revolution. There are people who can’t or don’t shop online, because they don’t have credit cards or because they are barely making ends meet. Only about 29 percent of households with incomes under $25,000 are members of Amazon Prime, according to Kantar Consulting. Some people are embracing the zero waste movement, or have followed the example of the author Ann Patchett, who published a widely-circulated op-ed in The New York Times about how she resolved to stop shopping for a year. When she ceased buying things like lip gloss and lotion and hair products, she started finding half-used versions of them under the sink, and realized she hadn’t needed new things after all. “The things we buy and buy and buy are like a thick coat of Vaseline smeared on glass,” she wrote. “We can see some shapes out there, light and dark, but in our constant craving for what we may still want, we miss life’s details.”

But most Americans are not curtailing their shopping habits. And as consumers demand cheaper clothing, electronics, and other goods, manufacturers are spending less to make them, which sometimes means they fall apart more quickly. The share of large household appliances that had to be replaced within five years grew to 13 percent in 2013, up from seven percent in 2004. Cheap clothes might lose their shape after a wash or two, or get holes after a few tumbles in the dryer; electronics become obsolete quickly and need to be replaced. While some of this stuff can be recycled or resold, often, it ends up in landfills. In 2015, the most recent year for which data is available, Americans put 16 million tons of textiles in the municipal waste stream, a 68 percent increased from 2000. We tossed 34.5 million tons of plastics, a 35 percent increase from 2000, according to data from the Environmental Protection Agency. Over that same time period, the population grew just 14 percent.

“Sometimes, people sit down and cry when they see the amount of garbage we produce in a day,” said Robert Reed, a spokesman for Recology, which handles recycling for West Coast cities like San Francisco. Centered in America’s tech capital, Recology has seen an increase in discarded electronics, including products with lithium batteries, Reed told me. In 2016, a lithium battery fire burnt down a waste management facility in San Mateo.

The 16,000 students who live in dorms at Michigan State University left behind 147,946 pounds of goods like clothing, towels, and appliances when they moved out this year, a 40 percent increase from 2016, according to Kat Cooper, a spokeswoman. The university packs up these goods and donates to them to its surplus store, so that incoming students can buy used, rather than new, stuff. In recent years, dorm cleaners have been finding so many packages of unopened food and toiletries that the university started a program to get students to donate leftover food and toiletries to local organizations like food banks when they move out. This year, it collected 900 pounds of personal care items and 4,000 pounds of nonperishable food items to donate. Pomona College has seen the volume of packages delivered grow by 325 percent in the last 12 years, according to Patricia Vest, a spokeswoman; it, too, asks students to donate unused goods to a resale program. This year, it diverted 42 tons of clothes, furniture, and office supplies.

The Internet has also made it easier to recycle some of the stuff Americans buy and no longer want. Online consignment shops like thredUP and Poshmark help people buy and sell clothes from their closets. Secondhand stores like Goodwill have moved online, too, selling the growing pile of goods they get on the Internet.

But the ability to easily get rid of stuff may be making people feel a little better about buying things they don’t need, and motivating them to buy even more. On a recent weekday, I stopped by the massive warehouse where workers from Goodwill of San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin sort donations to Bay Area stores. Some of the stuff that’s been donated has never been used. Near the front of the warehouse stands a rack of clothes with their original tags on--a $245 blue Nicole Miller cocktail dress, $88 Kit and Ace pants, a pale green J. Jill blouse. “We are seeing items that have been barely used or not used, because when people shop online, it’s a lot of work to return it,” William Rogers, the president of the Goodwill, told me. Rogers himself is guilty--when we met at the warehouse, he dropped off four wall sconces he’d bought a year ago on Amazon. He had tried to put them up, decided they didn’t look good, and brought them to donate.

Secondhand shops can’t resell all of the donations they get. Cline estimates that 85 percent of the clothing that is donated to secondhand stores ends up in landfills every year. Just nine percent of plastic that ends up in the municipal waste stream gets recycled, according to the EPA, and only 15 percent of textiles get recycled. It can be difficult to take apart clothes and re-use the fabrics, Cline said, so lots of clothing in the waste stream gets sent to the developing world, used for rags, or sent to a landfill.

Fifty years ago, the science fiction writer Philip K. Dick coined a phrase for these “useless objects” that accumulate in a house: “kipple.” In Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, which served as the basis for the movie Blade Runner, he theorized that “the entire universe is moving toward a state of total, absolute kippleization.” Kipple reproduced, Dick wrote, when nobody was around. The ubiquity of mobile devices and the ease of online shopping have made Dick’s prediction come true, with one small tweak: Our kipple does not just multiply on its own, every time we turn away. We grow it ourselves, buying more and more of it, because we can.

Have you had an argument with anyone recently and if so, do you still have issues with that person? My sister and I had a disagreement a few weeks ago. We are back to normal now but I'm still very sour about some of the remarks she made. And knowing I won't ever get an apology just adds salt to the wound. But that's how it is with her and I've accepted it. Are you talking to anyone while filling this in, or how about texting or chatting on Facebook? Glenn via FB messenger.
