On Ao3 Hits

Like other animals, human writers have a variety of motivations. Food, pets, et cetera. If you are a human writer who is motivated by hit:kudos ratios, this is your reminder that:

ONE HIT ≠ ONE READER

Ao3 calculates a single hit as "any number of page or chapter views from a single IP within a single day".

If someone refreshes a page, or switches devices, that will add another hit.

If someone comes back after that day, that'll be another hit.

There may be other fine-tunings, like cookie dumps etc, but I haven't confirmed those. Feel free to elaborate in notes.

So, if you are feeling bummed by the ratio, in this era of much reduced feedback, remember a rise in hits with no kudos can mean a bunch of people coming back to re-read who have already left kudos, or have switched devices. Which can account for a lot.

I gotta ask, where do you find your inspiration for your creative writing? I find your style very endearing and easy to read, but doesn't sacrifice complexity. It's rather enjoyable 😁

Thank you. It's really great to hear that someone is getting enjoyment from my works.

My style... I think it just developed from mainly writing and being an avid reader, and I read a lot (novels, smut, and fan-fiction). Then later in life several of my previous jobs required writing funding proposals and reports, where you had to detail things out in a concise, but easily to follow way (in order to get money or keep it).

I do FEEL though the biggest influence on how my writing has developed was me taking the chance and posting works on Fanfiction.net. I took the advice of reviewers, and watched what stories people were reading. I started not being afraid of trying new things, and took the feedback presented even if negative as tips on how to improve, be it through word choice, plot structure, etc. I will point out... I LOVE feed back... even if it is negative and pointing out flaws in my style, technique, theme, characters, plot, etc... all I ask is you be civil.

So I think it's mainly due to just constantly practicing and trying new tactics/themes. (I know clear as mud)

Generally I feel the flow of my prose comes easily due to the way I write. I am absolutely terrible at the whole plotting thing. (I am working on it) and because of that I write quite a lot of my stuff as "stream on conciseness"... I write as I'm imagining the story, and just going with the flow.

My ideas and inspiration is a little more easy to quantify. I have a VERY active imagination, and also considering I am certifiable (I have Bipolar 2)... things just jump into my head, and I run with them. For Example : "Things Best Left... ALONE" came from me looking for an anime to watch and seeing one titles "Bottle Fairies", and I was like that's neat (I have yet to watch it) and then I remembered a short story from a Fantasy Anthology about a boy who catches a fairy. In that story fairies were not cute little Tinkerbells... they were vicious... and long story short the ending has the fairies escaping during the night... and the boy being very afraid due to fairies having "very sharp teeth".

I feel I should also point out... I prefer my fantasy worlds to the real one, and this has been a large part of my whole life, from when I was a child until now.

Plus... I tend to write things I have had experience inor dealing with... at least when it comes to feelings. I have TBH tried to commit suicide several times (which is one of the reasons I put so much in my writing... it helps me through those dark times), so I know what depression FEELS like. I also spent 20 years trying to make a life with a partner that had a severe alcohol addiction.

And that was a long ramble. TLDNR ... I'm a mess, and I'm just lucky to have a talent at stringing words together. LOL, not really.

My advice to ANYONE who wants to write, draw, paint, carve, do pottery... just do it. The more you do, the more your style will develop. So what if someone doesn't like your stuff... if they offer CONSTRUCTIVE feedback on what you can improve on... take it. If there being assholes... ignore them. But you HAVE to be willing if you want to develop as an artist, to fail, and to succeed.

But most of all... do it for yourself. I write stuff I wouldn't mind reading if someone else published it.

God, sorry to just stick around but those last couple of chapters...they're just so fucking good it's unreal. They're not just amazing but somehow they leave me feeling...peaceful? Idk if that makes sense or not

Just having them be together without anything standing between them, all walls down, no secrets or lies or hurts left, finally on the same page. It feels like a true beginning

How you can convey such a deep love without using the word once...though it really goes beyond love, doesn't it. That word is too tame, too small to contain what they have. It's raw and bloody and tender but also elemental in a way that defies description. I know a lot of other readers think Shikamaru mouthed "I love you" against Neji's skin but he wouldn't say that in my opinion cuz it's not enough

Also, this is neither here not there but something about fandom that always annoys me is how hard shippers fall into stereotypes and use top or bottom as a substitute for gender roles. And especially in regard to Neji it's very hard to find anything that doesn't make him an aggressive dominant person who just always ends up horribly ooc.

So what I really appreciate, especially considering how old the first installment is and how long running the series was, that you don't fall into this whatsoever. The push and pull between them is consistently from the get go not about dominance and submission but about maneuvering themselves and each other onto equal grounds, a place of total equality and trust where those fandom assigned roles have no meaning

It's not about top or bottom, dominant or submissive, it's about the connection and how they need that in that specific moment, which is way more in character for both these characters than anything I've ever read. Most of the time I skip over the sex scenes in fics cuz characterization tends to unravel pretty quickly but when you write them it always feels like "yes, this is the right time and place in the story for that to happen" which is a talent a lot of writers in any form of writing need to cultivate I think

They both have dominant personalities with a deep craving for connection, of course they switch.

I feel you on this.  I’m not a fan of the seme/uke, top/bottom dynamic -- for the sheer sake of the dynamic/trope, whereby I sometimes feel that it can result in inadvertent (or deliberate) effeminising of one of the males. So yeah, not a fan. Totally different case if a character has a legit reason they don't enjoy it or want it. I think you can have a dynamic where one that tops without the other losing their masculinity. How the rest of the relationship plays out can certainly balance this.

Ah, yes. The level territory and equal footing that you described is exactly the no-mans-land intimacy they initially fought against and then fought to protect; sure it was riddled with a few landmines along the way…but I’m touched that you felt that sense of hard-won peace they managed to recover when the dust of all their conflicts settled.

I hear you. Again, super chuffed and touched you feel this way about how I wrote them.  Thank you.  With Shikamaru and Neji, it became more about the intimacy of longing, not the immediacy of lust. It’s not an itch that can be scratched elsewhere.

You were actually the first person I read my first fic from and i was blown away as your writings are seriously better than many published books i have read. Since then, I can't remember a single day where I haven't checked your page. When you write fanfic and the majority of the time you only get no response or people telling you what they don't like, what they feel you are doing wrong or how your story doesn't cater to their needs as a reader rather than you know something positive in all your hard work and effort to be creative or to say what they do like about it.

This is why people stop writing fanfic. Writers are people too with often busy full lives who see fandom as an escape, as a fun safe place to explore their love of fandom with others and seeking out a community to embrace said fandom. They aren't AI bots with no feeling who only live to pour out content only to be met by silence or negativity. That's hurtful to all people including artists/authors who put so much into their works.

If you read something and like it and appreciate the person writing it please just tell the author because it might actually keep them writing more stories you love instead of just quitting with writing. You don't have to write them a lengthy response but a little positive goes a long way. Food for thought.

Some Advice... Please

So I would like have more options for illustrations for some of my stories... but I don't have the disposable income to commission any works, nor am I going to ask for free work... So I would like to look into GOOD and FREE AI Character Generator... Specifically ones that are user friendly and can do RWBY characters.

Anyone have any suggestions as to a good site that would work for me? I would try hand drawing but... I suck at it.

So, did Shikamaru’s new issue with the chakra happen super quickly or did it slowly get worse and worse over the months?

The latter, luv. It crept up on Shikamaru, slowly getting worse and worse (which isn't unlike how the sickness operates before one gets better) before he took a sharp turn for the worst rather than recovery, which shocked medics and required him to be transfered.
