As Christmas approaches you might be stuck thinking of ways to support the authors you love, good news it's easy! There's tons of ways to support authors without spending money if your finances are tight: like, share, and comment on their social media posts, leave reviews for their books (if you've read them), request their books at your local library. We appreciate every little bit of support ♥️
My novel It's All Magic To Me came out over a year ago through a small indie publisher: The Three Little Sisters. I do my best to market it and not be overly pushy but it's tough. If you've read my book please leave me a review, I love hearing your thoughts!

I talked about this a little over on the birdsite, but I have a lot of (negative) thoughts about this, so here I am where I have all the space I need to bore you with my book biz ranting.
First, know that the article itself is paywalled, so I couldn’t read the whole thing. All of these ranty thoughts are based solely on the headline and much extrapolation on my part.
This is a really, really bad thing for the publishing and bookselling ecosystem.
Why?
The “partnered organisations” referenced will very, very likely not be independent bookstores. Who will TikTok partner with? Chain bookstores, mass merchandisers like WalMart and Target, Amazon. This will have a negative financial impact on small businesses; businesses that contribute to their local communities in ways that large national and multi-national corporations do not. It will also speed up the death of the midlist book. And it will absolutely destroy the discoverability and sales of books by authors who are not cis, het, abled, thin, and white.
Look at the books that are trending on the clock app. How many of them are from non-white authors? How many from queer authors? How many from trans or non-binary authors? How many from disabled authors? How many from fat authors?
Large retailers already exclude so many books by authors from marginalized identities unless they have already hit the best seller lists with past titles. If these large retailers partner with TikTok, this will narrow what they purchase even further. If a book hits the best seller list but doesn’t have partnership sales, that author’s next book has even less of a chance of being brought in. Didn’t hit the list or make a splash on TikTok? Too bad, so sad.
Add to that the fact that if readers are able to simply click a link and buy directly from partnered retailers without leaving TikTok, they’re not going to hit up their local bookstore looking for books, which hurts those local bookstores and further shrinks the opportunities for discovery. By readers not going to a bookstore, they’re not going to talk to a bookseller who can recommend a book to them that has the same feel as the TikTok book they came in to buy, but may be authored by an author from a marginalized group. If bookstores continue to lose sales to large retailers, they won’t have the budgets to take a chance on a debut or lesser-known author, and that’s the best-case scenario. The truth is that this will be one more thing that leaches sales from independent bookstores and some of them, still recovering from pandemic shutdowns, rising costs, and supply chain issues, will not survive.
If TikTok rolls this out--in the UK or anywhere--I beg of you, please do not purchase your books through TikTok shopping. Go to the bookstore. Go to the library. If you don’t have an independent bookstore near you, find one you vibe with and buy from their website. (I can make recommendations.) If you don’t have an easily accessible library, the Brooklyn Public Library will let you join for $50/year. You can also buy used books through Better World Books, which donates a book for every book purchased.
You have options. If you want a diverse selection of books to read, you need to be part of the solution. TikTok is not part of the solution.
Again, I don’t have access to the full article and maybe TikTok is going to partner with independent bookshops. In which case, great. But, even if that’s the case, be aware of what you’re buying and from whom. Your choices as a consumer matter. Don’t let huge corporations determine what you read now and what is available for you to read in the future.

I’ve low key been getting my mom to read more diverse books after she ran out of things to read:
>she used to read a lot of fantasy romance, mostly celtic influenced, outlander
>i pushed more fantasy romance at her but with diverse characters and some cool romances that I read
>then I wafted some kids books and  urban fantasy
>now she’s been reading indigenous authors, kids lit, romances, black girl mermaids from african mythology, gay romances, autistic romances, asian historical fiction
>I just recommended a book by a fellow Mills alumnae featuring a gay romance between a latino trans dude and a ghost on day of the dead and she’s intrigued
>last year she was implying books about black people were boring and Mexican Dirt style

"Introduced late last week by Massachusetts Congressional Representative Ayanna Pressley, the four part bill is one of the first to directly address book bans on the national level. Where “Fight Book Bans” would open up money for school districts to fight book challenges, Books Save Lives goes even further to ensure that students have access not only to material but to trained librarians in their school libraries. It would also classify book bans as a violation of Federal Civil Rights–this ties right into the arguments being made in a wealth of lawsuits across the country that seek to end discriminatory policies and laws that infringe on First and Fourteenth Amendment Rights."

sorry if you’ve read this before and i just haven’t seen you post about it, but the book “hell followed with us” by andrew joseph white seems right up your alley
i need some kind of faq with a section where i explain that i consider andrew joseph white to be a poor writer except when it comes to describing excesses of body horror and gore because people keep suggesting hell followed with us to me and i'm sorry but his books are not good. aside from the vivid descriptions mentioned above they're incredibly devoid of compelling narratives, fleshed out characters or immersive worldbuilding. the guy can come up with some amazing concepts for a story, but his ability to execute them is consistently disappointing. i'm glad he's making money and having fun pursuing his creative passions but his stuff just does not appeal to me at all and frankly makes a hater out of me.

“The rest of the world is glued to the United States. Foreigners follow American news stories like their own, listen to American pop music, and watch copious amounts of American television and film (in 2016, the six largest Hollywood studios alone accounted for more than half of global box office sales). Sometimes the attention cast toward American culture comes at the expense of foreigners knowing about their own countries. Canadians, a 2008 study found, tend to know more about American history than about their own national history.
But that’s only half the story. Americans, too, stick to the U.S. The list of the 500 highest-grossing films of all time in the U.S., for example, doesn’t contain a single foreign film (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon comes in at 505th, slightly higher than Jerry Seinfeld’s less-than-classic Bee Movie but about a hundred below Paul Blart: Mall Cop).” damn bitch

Just wanted to let y kno that people are accusing you of being a zionist and all that? Idk if its true but im assuming it isnt
I support Palestinian liberation, think the government of Israel is absolutely committing a genocide (& is awful in many other ways), and that Western nations are invested in Israel to help further their own imperial goals in West Asia. However I also think this situation is not 1:1 comparable with Western colonial states like America & I'm concerned with how many people (largely white, large Western people) have taken an extremely black and white view of this issue where "says nuance is important" is synonymous with "denies Palestinian oppression." There is a real and bipartisan antisemitism issue here & a lot of people are not taking seriously enough how antisemitism & the legacy of Jewish oppression shapes this issue in ways which make it fundamentally different to talking about White Christian colonization of America.
I am an anarchist & have no attachment to any state's existence. My only hope is that the war ends & a way is found to have everyone in that region (including Palestinians who have been forced from their home and current Israeli citizens) living safe, fulfilling lives in a community which is free from the control of imperialism and other forms of injustice.

I saw this making the rounds on Twitter and decided to make it a proper challenge:
Since it's the end of October, I'm going to begin this year with November. So here is the challenge:
NOVEMBER - INDIGENOUS LITERATURE
DECEMBER - LESBIAN / WLW AUTHORS
JANUARY - BIRACIAL / MULTIRACIAL AUTHORS
FEBRUARY - BLACK LITERATURE
MARCH - LATINX LITERATURE
APRIL - GAY / MLM AUTHORS
MAY - ASIAN LITERATURE
JUNE - TRANS AUTHORS
JULY - ARAB / MUSLIM LITERATURE
AUGUST - INDIAN / HINDU LITERATURE
SEPTEMBER - NON-BINARY AUTHORS
OCTOBER - JEWISH /HEBREW LITERATURE
This can be novels, entire series, poems, essays, etc, just as long as it fits the criteria.
Share what you are reading, share what authors you've fallen in love with, tell us all about something new you've learned, etc.

I’m reading Witch King by Martha Wells, and now that I have read more than one (1) series by this author, I have been suddenly brained with a two-by-four sharpied over with “realizing that I really enjoy novels by Martha Wells because they live in the specific niche created by the intersection of casually and thoroughly queer casts and non-romance storylines”
I am as ever a sucker for non-human main characters struggling with their very human feelings, which is why I jumped on Witch King the moment I saw “the author of Murderbot wrote another book with a main character that’s non-human,” but I live in this dichotomy where I can really enjoy reading queer romances but I don’t really identify with non-ace characters (which is not actually something I figured out how to differentiate until I was Last Week Years Old). so there are lots of books out there that I enjoy reading but it’s comparatively rare for me to read something that feels like it was written For Me and Martha Wells does that very well
anyway, give me more ace it-pronouns human-spliced robot main characters and people-eating demons who consider rank over gender when finding new bodies to inhabit

Spock to Chapel about McCoy:
"Yes, he is a sensitive man. He's also a remarkable doctor, and the Enterprise is fortunate to have him. However, he needs occasional correction. More than that, though, I believe he derives great pleasure from insulting me and having me insult him in return. That is the only way he will allow himself to express affection to a being as alien as I."
(The Trellisane Confrontation - David Dvorkin)
very talkative aren't you, Spock?
