look if your reaction to geriatric finale betty is "ugh of course she's the main character the writers are obsessed with her" i do get it but please keep in mind that
- they have kept her trapped in a cycle of emotional abuse with her mother for SEVEN seasons and all indicators are that it will last to the bitter end
- they tore her out of the one relationship in her whole life that made her feel seen and secure and loved for what will likely remain the most blatantly out-of-character plot machination I've ever seen in my life
- the seven years that followed are mainly notable for the fact that she a) was kept in a dirt pit by a serial killer for several weeks and b) became a cop
- they put her in a fuck buddy relationship that she proactively ended only to later accept being his second choice for [reasons not found], relationship then proceeds as a series of red flags clearly suggesting that not only are they fundamentally incompatible (which she already said, out loud, on screen) but that the relationship also consistently makes her feel inadequate and bad for being herself
- they made her the actual biblical whore of babylon (??? still don't understand this one)
- and finally when there's a full-on reboot her sole character traits are "horny for literally anyone at any time" and "constantly angry at mom" who, again, is still abusing her
so like, you're correct, the writers are obsessed with her. they're obsessed with TORTURING HER

I mean, a lot of things from this season are hard to get over, but to me, even after watching RD all this time, it is genuinely hard to believe how blatant and loud the writers are being that a) they hate women, and b) they are in this to lust on some hot young people. They're here to leer on underage people (yes, I know the actors aren't underage but the characters are and the demographic of the actors is like 24-30, while the demographic of the writers is 45-55).
The amount of sex, sex parties, unclothed canonical teenagers, and explicit scenes is wow. It's always been a sexual show but this season we're nearly in softcore porn territory. And the women's plotlines involve "they are horny." Oftentimes accompanied by "they are horny and deceptive to the poor sweet innocent males."
Like, the misogyny and creepiness is max and it's disgusting.

why don’t they just change their name to Riverfail and get it over with?

lol what are your thoughts on the trailer?
it looks stupid.
nothing to do with ships or anything, it honestly just looks painfully dumb to me. trailers lack context, sure, and i get that they're doing a whole new round of "something is wrong, we don't belong here" timelines nonsense but...no.
the way these writers treat the audience like they're idiots and act like they're so innovative for being the standard of mediocrity is just sort of offensive at this point.

If they wanted this show to end with the last day of senior year, they could have ended it at 5.03 and we’d ALL be better for it! Le sigh

It’s not fair that we live in a world where Nancy Drew only gets 4 seasons and Riverfail got 7

btw I’m such a petty bitch that when I watched Nancy Drew live last night and it ended and CW announcer voice went “coming up next on the CW, a new episode of Riverdale…” I loudly went “NO THANKS” and shut off the tv 🫡

I think the most disappointing thing about riverdale using agent drake as a plot point is that there are probably so many young girls who watch this show and were maybe so excited to see a beloved character like Betty cooper embrace and explore her sexuality. TV is powerful and media can affect our development immensely.
And look, I’m not saying Betty NEEDS to date agent drake or even be Bi. But don’t tease it in previews for marketing or clickbait. Don’t devote time in episodes to “foreshadow” a potential romance. And don’t you dare claim that counts as representation. Because it’s all a bunch of attempts to spike buzz for the show and it’s at the expense of the viewers… you know the people that actually have allowed this show to be able to tell it’s story for years.
I just imagine a young pre-teen closeted version of myself who would have been filled with hope and excitement at the prospect of the leading female of one of my favorite shows being in a wlw relationship. And idk I would like to think riverdale is above queer baiting. It’s such a slap in the face.

Where do you think it all went wrong with Riverdale?
honestly, part of me is like, the show's over and nothing but fandom matters. so who cares?
the other part of me loves to complain about Riverdale and will continue to do so until the day I die in the parking lot of Michael's Diner in Montgomeryville, PA at the age of 86. so, long-winded answer under the cut
I'm tempted to say it's the s4 b*rchie kiss. It was so wildly out of character for both Betty and Archie that it's laughable. You know how you can tell when something is just blatantly OOC with no justification? They...don't justify it. They find ways to dance around any interaction that might offer clarification. They mute the reactions of the characters who should be devastated by it. And then they jump ahead 7 years so it's easier to just handwave it away as something that happened a long time ago.
but the thing is, I did keep watching after that. I thought: okay, at least we should get an exes-to-lovers arc out of this, which is one of my favorite tropes. there is no way they would spend 4 seasons developing Bughead as this loving, supportive, communicative, sexy, and almost-unbelievably-compatible couple just to tear them apart and never do anything with that dynamic again. maybe it'll be even sweeter seeing them come back together after so much hurt and longing.
boy was i wrong!!!!!!!!!
so, the episode that actually made me stop watching for good, with the exception of some standalones like The Jughead Paradox and the finale, was the s5 musical. that was when i realized that this team of writers was 100% willing, maybe even eager, to completely drop storylines they themselves had been building over the course of a season - do a 180 with all of the characterization and relationships - and then act as though the buildup they wrote never even happened.
in this case, i'm specifically talking about the Bughead reunion storyline they dropped in s5. i'm not going to pretend like it was a GREAT buildup - and it was mostly on Jughead's side, Betty's character in s5 was basically an emotionless misery bot that had sex sometimes - but it was there. Jughead told Tabitha he had unresolved feelings around Betty. that's followed by an entire episode that lays out Betty & Jug's time jump relationship, and how Jughead still believes she's the one who saves him from himself. they work on a case together, they start opening up to one another. Jughead's so worried about her he can't eat.
and then...you know what happens.
(i'll also note here that there was random bts stuff that strongly indicated the musical ep storyline had a drastic last-minute rewrite: lili tweeted a blue dress, suggesting the song with that line was meant for her character; RAS said cole had to do last-minute recording sessions; supposedly crew members have confirmed this was the case, too. since none of it's 100% confirmed you can take it all with a grain of salt, but i believe it.)
it was so fucking insulting as a viewer to give my time and attention to a show made by people who would not only randomly drop the threads they set up, but torpedo them altogether, and then behave like the fans are the ones somehow at fault for expecting a story that actually follows through on its own emotional and plot beats. we're just shippers, so our opinions are dumb and biased! it's just a tv show, so who cares! get over it!
so, i stopped watching, because i knew they would continue to write without any thought or respect for their characters or their audience, and therefore inevitably write themselves into another corner. and, shocker, i was right. they did it again, whisking everyone away to the 1950s because actually resolving any of the scenarios they set up was ToO hArD. why bother when you could just make every single character Righteously Angry and Incurably Horny all the time, lecture the audience about social issues that have already been mainstream progressive for the last several decades, and call it a "love letter" to your fans?

Riverdale hasn’t been for me in a long while, but when it was, it brought me so much joy, and seeing the cast’s wrap posts has sparked such a bittersweet rush! Not to mention all the secondhand feelings, thinking about that ecstatic, terrifying thrill of ending one phase and beginning the next.
Wishing them luck as they start the next adventure … which, after all the tears, probably still involves running out the door like

Once in awhile, I like to just restate that Riverdale thought that a season-long biblical allegory would be a surefire win with audiences.

There are people who say that they do not ship adult Bughead but they still ship teen Bughead. What do you think about that?
i don't worry about what other people are shipping tbh but i would guess that the very hard turn the show took after the time jump with supernatural and the magics and the time travel isn't what a lot of people signed up for during the first 4 years of the show. also the pod people thing.
there's changing and growing as characters and then there's...whatever this show turned into with the additions of the rivervale event where every character was sacrificed at the alter of terrible plot.

I'm going negative again, sorry, so please don't read if you don't want to see negative ramblings
RAS said that next season we will see "first kisses", etc. in high school - so why again? We saw first kisses for Varchie and Bughead - why do I feel like we're going to see Barchie and Jabitha first kisses this time since it's a supposedly "clean slate"? He also said the couples will be changed up - why do I feel like that will mean just the B/V/A triangle and Jabitha in high school, since Jughead remembers things from before the comet, and he was with Tabitha before?
Alex (from RD After Dark) says he thinks next season will be like a purgatory, where "soulmates" will find each other and help each other recover their memories from Riverdale. BA and JT "soulmates", right, Alex, since you're a BA? RAS said they were going to "get Tabitha in there somewhere somehow" in this high school-based season. They've basically erased Bughead and have shit on Varchie (mostly Veronica) in Season 6, so I'm sure BA and JT, regardless of the stupid triangle, will be "endgames" in Season 7, too, even though they were already gifted "endgames" at the end of Season 6. Also, they're not popular couples, regardless of what RAS and the other writers/directors say. They have driven down the ratings, as we have seen. But they want to purposely piss Varchie and Bughead fans off. The disdain the writers have for the fandoms that helped bulid this show is EPIC.
Sorry to be negative and sarcastic, but I'm having these thoughts and I need to rant and vent. And I'm making myself sick in the process. lol
