I have a lot of thoughts about the way mental illness is treated by the Yellowjackets writers and the fandom, particularly when it comes to the vilification and/or deification of Lottie Matthews but I’m not schizophrenic and it’s not really my place to say what’s what when it comes to that but I DO want to talk about the other character who everyone seems to agree displayed mental illness before the events of the crash and that’s Misty Quigley

The first time we see Misty she’s watching a rat drown with something close to apathy, which is to me clear visual language of what they’re setting Misty up to be. See, there’s this disproved (but still commonly used within entertainment media) psychological theory called the Macdonald Triad, or sometimes the “triad of sociopathy”. It essentially claims that three behaviors displayed by children and teens can predict if they will develop ASPD in adulthood, or become violent criminals. The behaviors are bedwetting, firesetting, and cruelty to animals. The fact that we see Misty behaving cruelly towards animals in her FIRST scene is a clear statement of intention in regards to where her character is going

Now, all of the behaviors in the Macdonald triad are actually more closely linked with prolonged childhood abuse or neglect, which leads to the DEVELOPMENT of personality disorders in some cases, lighting fires or whatever doesn’t actually make you a “sociopath”.

And…Misty isn’t really, either. At least not at first. I personally could very easily see Misty as having ASPD (or conduct disorder, since she’s a minor), but in season 1 the writers seem like they’re putting a lot of effort into associating Misty with this sort of false Hollywood perception of a “sociopath” rather than people with an actual Cluster B personality disorder. And like, Misty displays an obvious lack of empathy and concern for others’ autonomy from the very beginning, but I really and truly wasn’t sold on Misty as a sympathetic portrayal or as representation until closer to the end of Season 2

And really is was Samantha Hanratty that sold me. Because there’s a BIG discrepancy in the way Samantha and the way Christina portrays Misty. 40 year old Misty is an adult set in her ways, she’s clinging to the people who made her feel useful 25 years ago but her old eagerness, her ability to be genuinely affected or hurt has been diminished a LOT. She’s got incredibly muted emotions, masks near constantly, and is willing to do just about anything to maintain her control over wildly out of hand situations.

Whereas Samantha’s young Misty is still in a place where she’s trying to reach out- something’s “wrong” with her, sure, but she genuinely believes that others still have the ability to appreciate her for her authentic self, and much of her manipulative behavior is in search of that validation. Yeah, she doesn’t know how to go about yeah, yeah she’s fucked up, but she’s sharing bits of herself with the expectation that this will get her what she wants, and she’s repeatedly being smacked down.

And then we see the loss of Crystal. The final loss that sort of cements for her that genuine display of emotion and authenticity is doomed to destroy her and everything she cares about. So she stops caring. She detaches. And that really hit me as the most accurate portrayal I’m going to get of what the inside of my head feels like. Her brain keeps her from feeling much in adulthood as protection, but it’s so fucking boring that she’s going through the motions of who she was before all that, playacting at the bubbly musical theater loving dork she could have been, just to try and get some of that excitement back.

And now I’m wondering, with clinging to those old connections having bitten her in the ass so thoroughly, is Misty going to drop the mask completely? Give up on every being anything to anyone? Go back to isolation and manipulation and violence? Or is there hope for her, like Natalie, to make a different choice this time?

why exactly is jaye not just a normal guy? are his fish filleting skills actually signs of being a genetic freak and i'm not normal or something?

Jaye has connections to the deep criminal underbelly of Lungmen, and by deep I mean almost familial, but the thing is, he doesn't really know it. He is the disciple-slash-adopted son of Uncle Tung, a famous chef who happens to also be deeply involved with several of the most powerful figures of Lungmen's criminal world. Tung taught him how to cook, particularly sushi, but also taught him how to fight, just in case, which Jaye considers "oh, you know, the basics, just in case someone tries to start something, to defend myself" when in fact Tung taught him Ultimate Knifefighting 30000 and built his already naturally strong and sturdy Ursus body into a machine of pure shredded muscle, which is why he can just actually shove his arm up the ass of pretty much anybody and wear them like Kermit the Frog if he wants. But as far as he's concerned, he's just "good for self-defense". He has no idea he's as strong and skilled as he is.

Through Uncle Tung he is also close to Lin Kojui AKA the Rat Freaking King, the giant rat that makes all of the rules in said criminal underworld, except he doesn't know that his kind, nice, old uncle Kojui is actually the Rat King, just that he is an old friend and frequent customer of Tung's.

On the other side of the coin, he is also related to Lee's Detective Agency, as he is good friends with Waai Fu and apparently also friend or at least close enough to the agency as a whole (his own Files state that Lee's agency are regulars of his) that it was due to Jaye "disappearing" from his usual spot in Lungmen for three days in a row that got Mr. Lee himself curious about where he could've gone, getting concerned that something might have happened to him. It's THIS event that directly resulted, as per Lee's Files, in Lee calling up the Rat freaking King himself, asking "hey man, where's our collective son?" and Kojui pointing at Rhodes Island. So, it is directly because of Jaye's connection to Lee that the agency's partnership with Rhodes Island exists in the first place, after Lee went to check with his own eyes if he was alright.

Besides all of this, because of his extremely intimidating appearance -- mean looking resting face, ripped, skilled with knives -- people often mistook him for a triad, which got him in trouble here and there when other triads thought he was an outsider trying to stir up trouble, or simply, with normal citizens who simply thought he was a bad guy to be avoided. Jaye is apparently notorious enough that Hoshiguma looked into him, and what did Hoshiguma find? Well, that Jaye really, really is just a normal ass guy who happens to have every underworld connection ever, but is not even remotely aware of it. His friend, Waai Fu, being an actual vigilante that beats the shit out of triads on sight at night on Lungmen, being seen with him, only reinforces people's judgment of him, as apparently many people think he is the leader of maybe several gangs and that Waai Fu is a martial arts master under his employ, when the reality is, Waai Fu is just bros with this dude and happens to enjoy one inch punching criminals in her free time. All he knows is that she's a vigilante but that's fine.

All of this made Hoshiguma think "holy shit" and referred him to Rhodes Island not because she thought he'd make a good combatant, but rather, out of concern for the guy.

There's a bit more to him as a whole, but to summarize:

Jaye has deep, personal connections to the Rat King.

Jaye has deep, personal connections to Lee's Detective Agency.

Jaye has connections to the Lungmen Guard Department.

Jaye was taught to fight (and cook) by a personal friend and enforcer of the Rat King.

Jaye does not realize any of this.

Unlike Mr. Nothing or Shalem, who are very well aware of how very not normal they are, Jaye really thinks he's just an average cook and sushi chef, and has no idea that his incredible fighting skill (rated "Excellent" by Rhodes Island standards) is not normal citizen-grade, nor that he actually can get in contact, if he so wished and knew, with virtually the highest echelons of power on both ends of the table in Lungmen as a whole. Jaye could potentially literally just call up the Rat King if he wanted, he just doesn't know he can, and even if he did, it's likely he wouldn't, as his Files and Waai Fu both state that despite looking the way he does, he's actually a really nice guy who likes to read books and practice his cooking, and who really thinks he's just doing his 9 to 5 nowadays, except for some reason Hoshiguma referred him to a god damn Private Military Company that cosplays as a pharmaceuticals company, so now he has less time to cook in between clashing blades with Sarkaz Swordmasters and soloing Big Bob in the creepy fucked up castle that Phantom decided to go crazy inside of.

FFXIV Fauxlore Mini Bang - The Final Update!

Hail well, pray tell, and might you know? How so, the woe of a prince from Nagxia was solved by temple cats? Not rats or bats, they hunted ghosts and hosts, who boast of wicked curse, and worse. Dispersed, by cats, now small; back then, they were large as couerl, born all in halls of Nagxian Kings.

Another little fauxlore update from me as we approach the final date for the release of all the amazing projects by other pairs and solo participants involved in the Fantastic Fauxlore FFXIV Mini Bang!

I am very excited to share the full piece of Fauxlore I've been working on — The Legend of Phra Malee and the Temple Cat, on March 11, alongside the final pieces of wonderful art provided by my artist partner, @mythiclings.

It has been so lovely to work with them, above you can see one of the fantastic concept sketches of the character, Phra Rakana and his two temple cats they kindly let me share with you all!

In the spirit of sharing and talking about the ins and outs of the creative process, and just for those interested, here's a little story about how I decided to write a whole lore bent folk story just from the Nagxian cat minion's description, and the challenges faced during such a random little undertaking, under the cut c:

It all started when I was first drabbling about Ren’s childhood — way back in April of 2023! I wanted a story or a fairy tale which Ren’s father and uncle both read to her when she was very young. At this stage the story itself wasn’t very important, but it needed a title because something important was going to be hidden in that book when Ren’s father disappeared. After settling on a type of folk tale (one with an animal), I decided to make it a cat for fun. Because, I love cats, and my husband’s OC, Cal, has a Nagxian cat minion which he won in a game of Triple Triad. Looking at the Nagxian Cat minion’s description, I decided to give the titular character in the story a Thai name: The legend of Phra Malee and the Temple Cat. (You can read the very first tumblr mention of it here in one of the few drabbles I’ve shared c’: )

Shortly after finishing that drabble, I encountered the fauxlore mini bang project! Once I saw it, I was determined to turn the imaginary book into real-ish book. Or at least a short story c':

Of course, I'm not Thai, although living down under, I am lucky we have a vibrant community of Thai diaspora. So, in my spare time I started researching about Thai folk lore; reading the stories that were easily accessible to me via online and my local library, researching the meter of a Klon, speaking to folks about their experience with Thai culture, and gathering material to hopefully create a folk tale that would echo the themes and spirit of Thailand’s own folk traditions, while also feel distinctly "Hydaelyn" and also borrow from the themes and characters we've all come to love while playing the game.

All this posed a challenge! It's been tough at times. I've had plenty of anxiety about offending folks of Thai heritage. Throughout the story, I've tried my absolute best to be respectful to the history and culture I've learned about over the past six months. I've endeavored to correctly use real Thai words, and also use what I've learned of Thai language to create original Nagxian names that feel like they'd fit in the world the Warrior of Light inhabits.

Although every character in the story is original, their journey's and arcs are also inspired by characters from the MSQ. Keeping them as their own unique characters, and trying to mirror the character arcs we follow through our gameplay was a totally different challenge that taught me a lot about writing the kinds of characters I'm not used to! Malee herself is even based on a character from the MSQ who I myself am not particularly fond of c': but I am happy to admit, telling the story of that character arc in a new way gave me a new found appreciation for them in the WoLs story!

Finally, this story is a folk story. It's written like old folk tales, in a way where it should be easy for someone to speak it aloud. Finding ways to preserve the oral traditions of folk tales meant sometimes that oft mentioned advice "show don't tell" had to go out the window. Reminding myself, regularly, that all advice about writing is contextual, and none of it will ever apply to every situation, is a reminder I think all writers need from time to time c:

It’s been an absolute blast working on this little lore bent project, and I hope these little updates help inspire others to jump into different areas of creative writing, to engage with folk lore from other countries and to keep sharing their own work and experiences too! (Even if like me, you’re not usually brave enough to!)

The list: 1. Les Mis 2. Ninety-three 3. Twenty years later 4. The Picture of Dorian Gray 5. Rudolf, Crown Prince and Rebel Les Mis: The scale, the symbolism, the amount of beautiful emotions and hilarious scenarios within the book! How can anyone refuse Hugo’s infodumps? Definitely not me. Ninety-three: I really enjoyed how the book was written, it’s very tightly structured and quick-paced. Although not free of Hugo’s philosophical flaws, and I’m not sure if I like the conclusion that much, the characters, the tension, and the emotional damage caused definitely secures a strong second for it.

Twenty Years Later: The better sequel. Yes. A second that is BETTER than the first. One can clearly find how Dumas’s storytelling skills improved, while keeping all the virtues of the former work. Since my beloved rat child is in the book you would have expected its appearance on the list.

The Picture of Dorian Gray: Read for Patrice Alexsandre, stayed and glued in the gay chaos jail for Wilde. It’s very different in nature from the books listed above, more personal and smaller in scale, but definitely not lacking in fun and pain. The gay triad of Dorian, Basil, and Henry is perfect.

Rudolf, Crown Prince and Rebel: The only nonfiction! Hamann is a wonderful writer, it’s only fifth because I didn’t finish it. Yet. I got sidetracked. The book has a very lucid feeling of which I enjoy greatly in writings of historical topics. (Also thank you Fitz so much for this one) Tagging @pilferingapples @fitzrove @riotstarruika @psalm22-6 because I’m really curious but no pressure

I am baffled that this fucking crusty ass rat lookin white boy named fucking WILDER isn’t the worst one on Couple to Throuple

I hated him the moment I laid eyes on him. I hated his fucking rat face. I hated his bottle blonde mullet. I hated his crusty mustache. And when his partner Corey started talking about him having crossed boundaries before, I -really- hated him

I’m only on episode 6 or 7 I think, and he has actually surprised me. He and their additional partner, Denyse, have been really good about taking things at Corey’s pace. And making sure to reassure Corey that going slow and setting boundaries isn’t ruining their dynamic

Wilder actually said, out loud “You not voicing your concerns WILL ruin the night, because then you’ll be uncomfortable and we won’t know. That’s how boundaries get crossed”

Wilder and Corey are also the only couple who have stuck with the same partner through the entire process. All the other couples have swapped at least once. Which is fine, and the point of the show. But it feels really superficial and gross when the couples talk about their temporary partners like they are objects for their pleasure and convenience.

Wilder and Corey at least seem to understand that polyamory goes beyond the physical. Though I do giggle because it seems like Denyse is way more into Corey than Wilder. And Corey is way more into Denyse. And Wilder seems content being their third wheel

Real “this is my girlfriend, Corey, and her girlfriend, Denyse” energy. But they seem to understand that polyamorous relationships, especially closed triads like this, don’t have to be 100% equitable all the time. People are naturally going to have deeper connections with some folks and not others. Doesn’t mean they don’t all care for one another. Nobody can post anything on SM until after the reunion, which is understandable. But I’d be interested to know if they’re still a triad (closed or open) or if they’ve all gone their separate ways

I’m really just here for Maximo and Ash at this point, because they’re the queer energy this show needs. And you could instantly see how relaxed the singles were around both of them

Both are non-binary, pan, and have experience with polyamory, though individually and not as a couple (which is how I think this show should have been structured to begin with)

The Gutter Runner I know you'll be ambivalent to:

Pakiit.

Pakiit is a lanky Gutter Runner with the potential to be an Eshin Triad member. A brown rat with dark black molting from his neck to his face and he is also incredibly tall for a Clanrat. Just a pawsbreadth taller than Stormvermin his arms and legs are disturbingly lanky and probably a Chaos mutation. His continued existence is said to be a curse by the Horned One, a rat to be tested as a horrible homunculus of all three Skaven a Skaven could be. But since he doesn't have horns it is only a rumor

In connection with this, his arms are weak and uncoordinated due to their thinness. He has worked on his tail and his tail fighting is excellent, on par with an assassin but he has only the one weapon.

Selected by Snikch, he is the message rat for a certain cookrat/any agent under Snikch. His strange shape means most Clanrats avoid him and his speed means the heavily armored Stormvermin struggle keep up. Snikch's mark keep the other assassins off of him.

A hyper little fellow he is always traveling the Under Empire collecting info for his gentle and caring Master. He has a streak of loyalty for Snikch but lacks the confidence to fight. His only chance to get a kill on anything greater than a Clanrat is by accidentally mowing a rat down in his haste.

When is isn't running supplies he utilizes a special blade to more effective tail fight, he is still hanicapped in combat but against the unarmored he his quite capable.

hoo-boy, many things come in mind, if I have more free time and passion I'd have just rewrote the series after the end of the elf arc, some examples:

instead of julius remaining a wk, I'd have made him step down and lose all his political power with someone else declared the next wk after him because, IMO, julius is the reason why clover kingdom is incapable from changing.

instead of having asta go out of his way to prove his innocent to a bunch of shitty people for a crime he never committed so that he remain on their good side... I'd have made him kicked out from the magic knights, fully exiled, and labelled as an outlaw with the bulls which led to their journey across the continet, AND THEN, asta will return to the kingdom protecting it on his own terms because the asta I love should be a free soul like lumiere, not a system slave like julius.

I also have some examples for the manga, like how I'd have made the spade kingdom arc focus only on megicula & dark triad, and how I'd have included a follow up underworld arc that focus on lucifero & the other devils, and how I'd have made the black bulls reach asta in hino to cheer him up out of his depression and explore yami's land.

easy answer is Gauche but let's talk about someone different this time, like the Dark Triad? I'm not sure if they're unpopular but while I'm a huge fan of the elves they're nowhere near as intimidating and intriguing and investable (to me) as those three bastards who show up one day and dogwalk the good guys like it's just another teusday and that was the hypest I've ever been with the series, plus they are siblings, are family, and I think that's cool? I wish tabata did more to them instead of putting them aside to clear the stage for their devils and brother tho.

I should make it clear, however, that the only dark triad that stirs any strong emotions from me on his/her own is dante. I love-hate dante. he's entertaining and full of personailty but he's also a bitchy wet rat who should be beaten down to kiss the ground more <3

straight off the bat, the fear of not living up to standards suggests you're somewhere in the competency triad (1-3-5). this is also why you seem to detach a lot from your emotions. struggling with introspection and trying to work through things logically is very similar to what someone in that triad would experience. you seem much more like a 3/5, as a 1 would focus more on being morally perfect. so3>5, as 5's don't seem to care about the guidelines for success set by society as you mention ("getting a good job", "earning money"...).

your wing for the 3 wasn't too strong, and was pretty balanced between 4 and 2. usually when this happens, it means that the wing is a countertype (meaning, the specific subtypes defies the stereotype/general description). between sp2 and sp4, the way you almost internalize/repress emotions was more fitting towards a sp4. this, on top of your answer to dealing with shame, which was very much internalized.

the part about wanting to make a strong impact on the world gives feeling in mbti mixed with e3, with a little hint of 8. the 8 is especially seen in your descriptions of anger (many ppl think 8's are feral angry rats but most of them relate to your exact answer). being fiercely protective of those around you is epitome of so8, plus the fact that you hate being controlled by others .

for your 8, 9 fits perfectly especially with how you don't find yourself being good at self-reflection. also with how you aren't too sure of where you want to go, suggesting you struggle with identity like a 9 would.

something that really solidified the strength of this fix was how when your at your lows, you find yourself worried about things, feeling worthless, and feeling life has lost it's meaning, which is how a 3 and 9 would disintegrate.

your 9 and 8 seem pretty balanced. i don't think that you're either a 9w8 or 8w9 tbh, because you seem to use them in a way that is complementary to each other- not really that one is stronger than the other. but since your mbti is an entp it made most sense to type you as 8w9.

lastly, for the final fix of your tritype, i notice you mention you want to do things w/o worrying about repercussions, which is pretty similar to how an e7 would function. most of the reasons for giving you this fix were slightly sprinkled throughout your questionnaire, there wasn't an exact answer that led me to it. some sentences gave me the impressions that you do value gaining experiences, while also slightly 'security" focused, like a 7w6 would be. an example would be your curiosity answer about preventing a big situation in the real world from happening, which was small, but still pretty e6.

imo, the way you structure your answers suggests a lot of ne. you consider a lot of possibilities in the way you respond to certain questions, which is something a high ne user would usually do. in my experience people who say "it depends" a lot are usually a mix of ne and ti.

maybe it's my washy speculation, or maybe the intent was to add more info?? either way, this wasn't the only reason i gave you this typing.

you also do seem to show slight se, especially through learning things with application. but i don't think that this se necessarily trumps your ne. i think your enneagram explains why you display some stronger sensory traits (having all 3, 6, and 9 in your tritype def proves it), but again, looking back to your cores fixes, it points much more to entp.
