Ok but I have seen you talk about this so many times, even referencing it in your old cartoons, so I gotta ask - when and how did you fall in love with neopets, like that?

Wait, is it that obscure now? I didn't know a single person from its inception to roughly 2010 who didn't have a neopets account. It was the single biggest gaming-esque name on the internet for years. Celebrities casually mentioned playing it, it got mainstream marketing tie-ins, it had plush toys people waited in line to buy up and a TCG made by the same company as Magic the Gathering. It's not that I especially "fell in love with neopets" like it's a niche thing but that there was a time it was almost outselling Pokemon, so it's just another huge cultural phenomenon that was a big part of everyone's lives during my teens to twenties, and hits my special interest in creature design since it has THOUSANDS (beyond the pets alone) ranging in quality from extremely creative to just plain heinous. I personally only got invested in it when they introduced the mutant pets, though, because it started out having almost like a "rule" against making any pets that were "ugly." They'd joke about it as a prank for instance, and originally only featured the mutants as part of a storyline they never intended players to actually adopt. They even had a fake alternate version of the site with fake "adoptions coming soon" and somehow didn't anticipate the userbase genuinely wanting the slime creatures.

The Chia and Aisha were my favorites but mainly the chia because that kind of "scuzzy" creature was already my own design aesthetic, polar opposite of the site's established style and reminded me of if Jeff Goldblum got fused with a tardigrade instead of a fly:

Is that just me? I feel like the tardigrade similarity jumps right out but I think it was an accident and they were possibly actually thinking of the rotting giant from Nausicaa:

The fact that they intended its design to be unlovably ugly and were surprised anyone wanted it only made it more sympathetic. Eventually they made mutants available and I got fully invested into playing, at the time having to spend hours a day on their little flash games until I could afford a mutant after months of labor. But then a couple of years later they just abruptly decided they really didn't feel like having its design around anymore and "updated" it, which back then was automatic for all pets owned by all players with no going back:

It had unfortunately been fairly common that they'd just completely, totally redo a pet like this with no warning and no user poll to make sure it's what anyone wanted. You just had to pray they never did it to your favorites.

All the other mutants in that earlier image would also get completely changed or never released at all. They still kept some of the other "gross" mutants and would make even grosser, so that wasn't even part of the reasoning. Just the random whims of mad gods I guess. I think what killed the game for a lot of people was actually when they did this to basically everyone at once, standardizing almost all the pet artwork so they could wear clothes in their new dressup system. It wasn't as drastic as replacing a sludge guy with some kind of hairy leaf guy but it did eliminate hundreds of technically unique designs from the site, and I found someone else's examples they put together so I thankfully don't have to do it myself:

If anyone's not familiar enough with neopets or didn't figure that out from the last paragraph, the ones on the right are just recolors of the same exact art as all members of their species with added accessories (now wearable items) Players used to work hard to get pets they wanted based on their unique poses and personality, but you could only keep the original art for a small number of these. The customization feature kind of attracted a different new fandom, from what people say, but it never approached a fraction the site's peak, which is probably how the brand wound up getting sold to some NFT bros who aren't even involved in the site itself and supposedly never even spoken to its remaining staff outside some business emails? This is unrelated to the brief period it was bought by scientologists and the siterunners had to fight back against their propaganda leaking into it. I really didn't expect to turn this response into a mini article, I should really just make a thing on bogleech.com about it sometime. Some of my tumblr mutuals to this day are people I met through the neopets fandom and probably have equally lengthy memories/complaints.

Can you do a minior review? I've been really into it lately for some reason

I always kind of felt like Minior should've had a bit of lore relating it to Lunatone and Solrock, seeing as they're both strange floating outer space rocks. Just me?

Regardless, Minior's case form is neat, if for no other reason than it has no real eyes and no mouth. It's also pretty nicely designed—a neutral brown to contrast with the core colors with just the tips of the core peeking out, and a few well-placed triangles for good measure.

The only thing that bugs me about it is that random circle by the right eye. Like, why is that there, exactly?

Also, side note: I always thought it was weird that the 'dex says that the core can die without its shell, but also it breaks out of its shell whenever its health is down to less than half. Like, how is the shell getting back on it, exactly? Feels like one of those things that's neat in theory, but doesn't quite work out in terms of mechanics.

However, I do like the mental image of Minior falling to earth like shooting stars and people rushing out to save them by catching them. That's just sweet.

Speaking of sweets, Minior's core form is based off Konpeitō, a type of sugar-based star candy:

Which is a pretty neat thing to reference without being too overt about it (the fact that most Western audiences wouldn't even recognize what it's referencing shows its solid regardless of theme). It kind of feels like a Kirby enemy or something.

In terms of design, I like Minior's face a lot. Instead of actually being static, it's instead separate from the face entirely, staying still instead of rotating with the body. I think I could've done without the mouth, but it's a fun way to handle things regardless.

I also do like the line's color gimmick (especially with how it's based on diet) and how it makes for a fun surprise because you don't know the color when looking at the meteor form... though admittedly, I feel like it's missing something. I think it just bugs me that the body is really just mono-color, making each of the forms akin to a shiny recolor. It makes sense due to the konpeitō thing, but I don't feel like it's as striking as, say, Vivillion, which changes pattern as well as entire palettes.

Speaking of shinies, making the shiny for it black with colored markings looks fantastic, and is a really nice way to handle a palette swap for a Pokemon that already has a palette swap gimmick. Plus it fixes the monotone color thing that kind of didn't sit with me with the regular core colors.

My only nitpick (outside of the color thing, and like I said, that's understandable because of the gimmick) is that random circle on the left side. Like the circle on the meteor form, I don't get why it's there.

Anyway, as a whole, this is a charming Pokemon with a fun gimmick. Definitely worth the extra effort shiny hunting this one though.

i should of done this the beginning of 2024 (omg) but didnt really have much to say at the time, plus I was celebrating the new year.

I am glad I gave myself a restart to tumblr because I definitely was hyper fixated on sims + the simblr community which tbh i got too invested in my internet presence + kinda ruined my fun on here for me because of weirdos.

Also, never say you'll never return to simblr/tumblr because that s a lie dskdjks you will definitely comeback to tumblr/simblr if you get the sim itch lol. I just post whenever I want & reblog whatever I dont want to dedicate a blog to one interested ever again. I felt like I had to post constantly (bc of me not others) & thought too much about what I post and how I post it. You're just playing with pixels bitch it isnt that serious T0T wanting perfection in even how you play video games is so silly I cant believe my brain does this to me. yall do not want to know how I play pokemon LMAO

I just want to have fun & post my gameplays (not just sims but of any other games I would be playing) I feel comfortable now than before being here on tumblr again. For my sake, I will never turn on anon ever again to keep my peace <3 too many weird ass ppl on here that get obsessed with others who's opinions & views dont match theirs + thinking someone is annoying so they go and harass them for it (literally just block them??? lol)

hello dreamy; hope you’re well ❤️ we’re pretty similar in some aspects :o i love making gfx the most too since it’s something i wish to be good at + pairing fonts, figuring out colour palettes and executing ideas in the form of a graphics really is challenging but also super rewarding! i draw from time to time as well and i really love doing it, but since i rarely ever not draw from a reference or change things ever so slightly, it’s not something that tickles my imagination as much as a gfx would hehe since i usually have to readjust colourings or sometimes colour from scratch, i really like giffing too! but it’s probably the most mundane out of all of them since there’s nothing much different about the process dkfjdj oh, you’re absolutely fine! a good friend is like a seasoned professional when it comes to typos, and i’ve finally mastered decoding 90% of what she says… reading through your posts is like a calming breeze after talking to her—no missing words, random exclamations or extra letters 😂 but i think it’s a charming point for her too; i immediately know it’s her when i receive a text that butchered up! the whole biasing thing reminds me of a mutual of mine :D she’s always confused on who her bias is and ends up biasing the one member who is a complete opposite of her initial bias so we joke around by predicting who her bias will be once she starts getting into a new group. what’s your favourite hair colour on chan (and/or binnie haha) + what are some things that you associate with him? (i apologize for the late ask as i have been struggling with tumblr for the past couple of days ^^;) - 🌨

Hi my lil rain cloud, omg yes there’s just so much you can do with gfx, its a constant learning curve, and it’s so full of experimentation that its just always so fun. I’ve always been tempted to open up requests for gfx but its so hard to think of how to get ppl to send stuff that would actually inspire me. The best I’ve done is someone randomly sent me an ask for a gfx with Minho and they asked if it could be yellow and it ended up being a lot of fun to try to do, the request was so vague it was easy to be completely creative.  I also cannot draw unless I have a good reference, it’s like I can picture something so perfectly in my mind but the second my pen touches paper or tablet I suddenly can’t figure out how to proportion anything. But if I have something to constantly look at and compare myself to I can match it pretty well. But I agree gifs feel easy most of the time in comparison, unless I’m trying to recolor something nightmare inducing like purple stage lighting, or making things extra fancy by basically turning gifs into gfx. Giffing is a good hobby for watching tv or something, because it’s just a constant process so I can pay enough attention to the tv to know what’s happening while also cranking out sets, so I like that about it. I’m glad my grammar issues are at least legible, just lots of random commas that I hope are remotely ok lmao

Omg red is definitely my favorite hair color on Chris, like all time, I think the more ppl hated it the more I loved it, was obsessed with it. It just felt so punk, and then it faded to a pretty pink and I was happy all over again lmao. I also really loved the highlighted brown during double knot, that was such a gorgeous color and I think it really suited his skin tone a lot. I’m partial to blonde binnie, like ex or all in that was SUCH a gorgeous color on him, I do wish he got to do more fun colors tho, he’s said a few times he wants pink hair and I think changbin should get what he wants lol

My very rough looking Pokemon fanart from 2017/2018 gets reblogged sometimes, I don't know why but I guess some people like it's imperfections.

That Monster Roadtrip drawing is my most popular one right now, usually if I get a random like or reblog at night it's probably cause of that one. Tbh I drew that for a chance of winning a free game code but didn't win but it's nice that despite that people like it so much.

I want to draw more Um Jammer Lammy art because people who enjoy it seem cool, also I like Rammy and she deserves more art. I know she's just a hell recolor of Lammy but I literally have an OC who is a recolor of an OC.

Could you make it so that we can actually choose the types we want (instead of having to randomize it) and we actually get pictures of what the Pokemon would look like in their new types?

I had a bit of a back and forth on the type picking, as my initial thoughts are it removes the need for the generator (ex. if you wanted to draw a Fire Pikachu, you don't need this generator). But I can think of a few use cases for it (ex. getting a drawing prompt for a random Pokemon that's now a Fire type) so I'll add that to the feature request list!

For the images though, the primary intent of the generator was to use for drawing challenges. It's also infeasible for me to make images of every Pokemon form in every type combination (1200+ Pokemon forms x 324 type combinations = 388,800+ results). No one person has the time for that as type swaps are usually more than just recoloring the Pokemon.

That said, it reminded me of a sprite recolorer idea I'd tried out a few years back, so I'll add a Pokemon sprite recolorer to my 'Future Ideas' list as a separate app idea!

Thoughts on the sawsbuck evolution?

I'm a big fan of winter deerling and sawsbuck with its fluffy legs <3

Deerling is pretty simple, but I do like the design quite a bit. The specific shape of the colored areas combined with the lovely gold accents just looks really pleasing to the eye. I also like the spots (appropriate for a fawn) and the cream-colored base.

With that said though, the face does bug me. It has that kind of generic nondescript muzzle and sideways mouth that always bother me. Pokemon don't have to be anatomically correct all the time obviously, but something a little closer to a proper muzzle would've worked better, especially when the evolution has one. (The legs are also a little wonky, but that's not quite as bothersome as the face.)

In terms of the seasonal forms: First, I should mention how crappy it is that we never get the other non-spring forms due to the season mechanic being scrapped. Why not correlate the forms to the user's season instead of in-game seasons? Or even better, why not just have different forms appear in different climates? Winter in snowy, icy climates, Spring in rainy climates, Summer in general climates, and Autumn in cold-but-not-freezing climates. Or hell, just introduce items to change the forms, I don't care, just bring them back; they're really the main concept of the entire line and it doesn't work nearly as well without them.

Anyway, with that said, Deerling's different forms are just kind of recolors, and while they all look fine, I do find the difference between it and Sawsbuck to be jarring. Why does Deerling not change its design but changes colors, while Sawsbuck changes its design but not its base color? Some consistency would've been nice. I also kind of feel like you could've just not introduced the season thing until Sawsbuck, seeing as Deerling doesn't do too much with it. Still, like I said, all of them look nice. Summer's probably my least favorite--I would've preferred a less saturated forest green--while autumn and winter are tied for my favorites.

I was today years old when I learned that Sawsbuck is S.A.W.S.buck, IE Spring, Autumn, Winter, and Summer.

Anyway, as a whole, I do like these guys fine; the markings still look very nice (though I do question the spots. Wasn't the idea of spots on Deerling because its a fawn?) and the seasons are implemented and distinctive. Part of me wonders if they should've kept the different base colors of Deerling to differentiate them even more, but part of me also likes the subtle brown.

Between all of them, summer is once again my least fav. Aside from some seemingly random choices (why is it the only one to not have chest fluff? Why is it the only one to have its tail going up? Why the fur on the back of the head?), the green is once again a bit too intense for my tastes and clashes with the brown when it comes to the back spots, and the leafy antlers are a bit much and distract from the actual deer.

Autumn form has a similar problem with the antlers, but at least the colors are nicer on that one and the overall design is better. However, I do wish the color was more orange-y to match Deerling and to keep it from looking so similar to the spring form. Speaking of which, I also feel like those two look too similar; the colors are close, and the bodies are near-identical except for the antlers. Summer form's changes may be random, but they at least make the design a bit more unique.

Spring is looks pretty good, but only having a few small flowers on the antlers feels a hair understated. Feels like they could've worked more of them into the chest fur, in place of the spots, or around the legs. This would've helped with the aforementioned issue of it looking a bit too similar to the autumn design.

Winter, meanwhile, is probably my fav. I really like the contrast of the white and how nicely it compliments the brown and yellow, but I also like how it's actually adapted to the season it represents, with a full-on winter coat.

Also, as a final note: while normal/grass makes sense, I do question if these guys could've gotten away with different typings, just for fun. Grass/water for spring (it's wet out), normal/grass stays for summer, grass/ghost for autumn (spook season), and grass/ice for winter. Might've added a little extra something.

Overall, these are some pretty nicely-designed deer with a simple but unique gimmick that really needs to make a comeback. As a whole, I'd say the summer forms are my least favorite, while the winter ones are my favorite.
