I do think ultimately the communication and trust trials were excuses for Matt to give the cast fun new games to play at the table - and it was a success! They clearly had a lot of fun in both. And I had a lot of fun watching them have fun.
AND YET weirdly enough it also kind of worked for bell's hells? One thing most of them have in common is that, whether it's because of their past trauma or their complicated sources of power, they can become dangerous. And maybe it's something they can change in the long run, but as it stands? That's just how it is for the foreseeable future. But then they're put into situations where 1) there's an external danger and they can only rely on each other (communication trial), and 2) some of them might BE the danger, and they have to be ready to neutralize each other (trust trial). How does it help?
Well, now Fearne talks about wanting yet fearing the shard, and Imogen talks about wanting to give in to ruidus, and Laudna communicates to them that she's going to be tempted by Delilah, and FCG tells them they're about to go beserk... and the goal of these admissions is not to make a confession of guilt, or to vainly hope that things could be different. Things are as they are, and sometimes there is no truly safe option! The bell's hells are who they are, and who they are is sometimes dangerous to each other! And the only path forward is to acknowledge it, to let their friends know what the risks are, and to TRUST them to take care of it!
Whatever personal motives they had, the whole Ashton & Fearne shard debacle happened because they did not communicate to the rest of the team, and did not trust them to listen and help. But what we get three episodes later is: Fearne getting reassurance that she's in control, and then getting the help and support of all her loved ones to ensure she takes the shard as safely as possible ; Laudna being both physically and emotionally grounded by Imogen right on time to resist Delilah ; FCG not scared to go into a rage, because they know Chetney and Orym will make sure they don't attack their friends...
I like the idea that they now have a better understanding of what their team dynamic needs to be, which is equal amount damage control and safety net. It's a very fitting, satisfying pay-off to this mini Feywild therapeutic retreat.

I've come to the conclusion that anybody wanting to write Damian Wayne well shouldn't definitely read The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Maybe take some notes.
I had my doubts going in but I'm halfway through at this point and man, teenage Coriolanus is a really brilliant character. Like he's incredibly smart and capable and very clearly traumatized in a way that makes him sympathetic, and he's capable of insights and empathy in a way that only some of his Capitol peers echo in stark contrast to the callow decadence and bigotry of the society and him. His love for Lucy Gray feels genuine and sweet and sincere.
But he's also an arrogant, selfish, snobby, entitled bastard whose affection for the people around him can switch to loathing, dismissal and resentment at the drop of a hat. He's constantly looking down on and insulting people in his internal thoughts and only doesn't voice them because he knows he doesn't have the station to get away with it. He's paranoid and insecure and only interested in Lucy Gray in the first place because he's able to put her on a mental pedestal above the other District folk, seeing her as better than them, a reflection of his own privilege and bigotry. And his love for her, while sincere, is also jealous and possessive -- he needs to own her, needs her to be his girl, and gets violently angry at the very implication that she might have had a lover and a past before him, that there was anything in her life that didn't revolve around him.
It's just a brilliantly rendered example of how to write a kid who's got both good and bad in them, who's been shaped by their trauma without that trauma excusing their entitlement and cruel deeds. The fundamental difference between him and Damian being, Coryo is ultimately shaped by mentors who foster the worst aspects of his personality, while Damian -- when he's written well -- has the influence of people like Bruce and Dick to bring out the kindness and empathy beneath the protective shell of his privileged arrogance.

can you do Bleach Name game for ichigo's friends in Karakura Town?
Ya know it's weird that i haven't done it already... I kinda thought I had, honestly. Yeah, let me resurrect this long dead series of posts...
Inoue Orihime[井上 織姫] read most literally as something like "Well+Top"(as in the top of a well(for water)) and "Weaving+Princess" but of course the name Orihime is just taken directly from the mythological figure behind the tanabata festival. It's possible the name Inoue in that context could be used to reference the Well Mansion, one of 28 categories of constellations in Chinese astronomy. Although in Tanabata Orihime refers to the star Vega, which as far as I can tell is not part of the Well Mansion.
In any case, the myth of Orihime and Hikoboshi was the basis of Kubo's original Bleach one-shot, which itself got reworked into the plot with her brother Sora, the hollow Acidwire. Ichigo lost prettymuch all of his associated hikoboshi themes in the transition from the one-shot to the serial title, so her name is kind of vestigial. The one lingering detail that was never built on was how her rejection powers were said to verge on the territory of god, and in the tanabata myth Orihime is the daughter of Tantei[天帝]:"Heaven Emperor" one of several epithets for the Jade Emperor, a figure hailed as a human ascended to immortal, the First God, and a supreme ruler over other gods. But despite that very slight thematic alignment, she was never given any divine origins.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her bother, Inoue Sora[井上昊] reads, "Well+Top" and "Sky/Heaven," where Sora[昊] is a synonym with Ten/Ama[天]: "Sky/heaven" and both a synonym and homonym with sora[空]: "sky/heaven/void." (And it's a bit of a tangent, but that last one is the same word Kubo uses in the name Kuukaku[空鶴], Karakura town[空座町], and when Aizen says, Ten no za no kuuhaku[天の座の空白]: "The Throne of Heaven is Empty.") He was a rewritten from what was originally Orihime's late grandfather in the one-shot, which aligned more obviously with the father Heaven King role of myth.
Sado Yasutora[茶渡 泰虎] I think I've mentioned before, reads "Tea+Ferry" and "Peaceful+Tiger" which just seems to literally describe him as an immigrant(traded over on a boat, like tea) and as a gentlegiant type. It's also very possible Kubo just wanted to nickname him "Chad" and found a name he could squeeze into that, rather than worry about the meaning of the name first.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Arisawa Tatsuki[有沢 竜貴] I don't really know how to parse part of her surname here, "Posession/Existence+Swamp" seems to be the literal breakdown? It's also just an actual surname people have, as is Inoue --Sado by comparison however, is not. In any case, her personal name is "Dragon+Noble/<indicator of high rank or status>." This is why she and Orihime get a paired Princess and Dragon motif.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Asano Keigo[浅野 啓吾] reads "Superficial+Rustic/Unsophisiticated" and "Disclose+Me" basically just calling him surface level, simple, and open. He's exactly what it says on the label. Can be read like an open book. Then there's his sister...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Asano Mizuho[浅野 みづ穂] and her name is the phonetic MIDZU+"the ear of a plant/head of a spear/tip of a brush." There are kanji that could go with that but for one, I'm not just gonna take blind stabs, and besides if Kubo had wanted to ascribe obvious meaning to it, he'd have done so. No idea what to make of that one. Considering she's extremely minor and secondary to an already minor character at that, I'm willing to bet he just picked it to be aesthetically pleasing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kojima Mizuiro[小島 水色]: "Little+Island" "Water+Color," that is of course as in "Color (of) Water" and not to "water color paints," those have a different name entirely in Japanese. I don't know that his name really says much about him, but considering a lot of weird little details of his fairly minimal appearances across the series, I have my own crackpot theories about Mizuiro, but this isn't the time or place...
Honshou Chizuru[本匠 千鶴]: "Book+Artisan" and "1,000+Crane(s)" the association of paper craft and cranes points pretty obviously to origami, and 1,000 origami cranes (senbazura[千羽鶴]) which evokes a meaning of longevity and recovery from illness. Also the Bookishness vibe seems to be evoked in her general glasses girl design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kunieda Ryou[国枝 鈴]: "Country+Branch" and "(Small)Bell." "County" like a "nation/kingdom," not like "rural" as in Asano's name. The small bell evokes a clear but subtle ring, which is kind of reflected in her quiet and intelligent demeanor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ogawa Michiru[小川みちる] "MICHIRU" is phonetic so no attributed meaning, but her surname just means "brook/stream" (lit."Small+River") a very on the nose nod to her diminutive size. I never noticed until now but she always has different sheet music notation hairpins.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Natsui Mahana[夏井 真花]: "Summer+Well" (again, like with Inou, the structure you fish water out of, not the adverb) and "Pure/Genuine+Flower." She's an extremely minor character so I don't see there really being much overt meaning to this. Summer seems to evoke her tan*, and Flower beauty, and she's a busty tan girl. (*you know I said that on reflex, but now that i think about it, I don't know that Kubo himself ever actually drew her in color... that may have been an anime thing.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ochi Misato[越智美諭]: "Surpass+Wisdom" and "Beauty+Admonish" which I guess I've never looked at before now. It's not that she isn't a cute character design(and I've got a thing for kind of homely teacher characters anyway...) but I didn't realize Kubo was trying for, like, a "hot teacher" thing with her?
And those are basically all the important ones, and frankly a couple not so important ones... I'm not getting into any of Kubo's little inbetween doodles, or god forbid that ridiculous number of random Karakura High students he dumped into Burn the Witch.
(sorry i got lazy and didn't finish digging up pics for everyone, but I at least made sure to have reference for the obscure characters that some people might not remember)

i just find the idea that each of the immortals have, at some point, been attracted to/emotionally involved/physical with a compelling prospect.
think about it. these are the only people in the world that you can ever truly connect and be yourself with. you're spending decades, centuries, millenia with them. lines will get blurry sometimes. you'll be friends, lovers, and friends once more, lines crossing and uncrossing through the years as your wants and needs evolve. quynh loved lykon. quynh loved andy. andy loved quynh. andy loved booker. booker loved joe. joe loved booker. joe loved nicky.
then nile comes along and all the love and hate and conflicting feelings mixed with this dependency they have with each other must look so strange to an outsider. how do you even begin to explain it? how can you prepare someone for that?
you don't. you just have to wait for it to happen to them and help them reason with themselves.

Fond of the idea of a system where wandering Gray Wardens keep in touch with one another by writing letters.  Every time they meet another Warden, they make copies of each other’s letters if there’s a chance they might run into the person it’s meant to go to.  Letters get dropped off with garrisons, end up in Weisshaupt, stacks and stacks of them that get kept in the hopes of one day being read.
A Warden hears the Calling after 15 years alone, goes to meet his fellows one last time, and finds a stack of letters waiting for him.  Years and years of letters from an old friend that never found him, the last one detailing her trip down to the Deep Roads to serve her own Calling.
Reading the letters helps drown out the Call as he heads down, retracing his friend’s path, battling through Darkspawn one last time.  Down deep below he finally finds his friend’s body.  He puts her sword back in her decaying hand and a letter in her pocket.
He makes his last stand.
At least he gets to die side by side with a friend.

Bruce stared. He had just been lecturing one of his son on his gala manners. Dick or Jason were usually the ones misbehaving like that, not Tim! What had gotten into his son to behave like that in public when he wasn't even in a sleep deprived state. Of course, Bruce had to lecture his kid and benched him for the night to get some sleep because Tim had to be sleep deprived to act like that. That was untill said son, he was lecturing, came through the front door shouting at him for leaving him behind at the gala.
His head swayed between Tim and the teen he had apparently just abducted and possibly has now knowledge of their secret identities.
Okay, maybe Alfred was right about his amount of sleep. Bruce brain went to overdrive, he could play it all of with an extended Brucie act.
That was before the teen lifted on hand in a calming manner and sheepishly smiled at him.
Danny: I get the whole secret identity thing, but i dont think it's a good idea to bench me, when ghost might come attacking. I won't tell a soul about yours if you keep mine! I can make a death vow if that helps. So can I call vlad now? As much as I like getting on his nerves and away from him. HE is my original ride home.
Tim: Wait, Vlad Masters who pestered ME all night is your guardian?
Bruce continued staring at the teen that looked like Tim and was now talking to his son while his son was parallel texting on his phone. No doubt telling his other sibling.
Good, they will never let this go and Alfred will use this situation against him next time he works through several nights.

What happens when a Jedi Initiate dies?
It cannot always be prevented, the galaxy is a dangerous place, especially for children, and the Jedi are still only mortal.
Accidents happen. Illnesses exist.
Tragedies do too.
The Crèchemasters are highly trained to prevent that, of course, but they too are only mortal. They too can fail.
The death of an Initiate is a heavy burden, for the entire Temple. It doesn't happen often, but when it does it is a heavy burden. It is from that burden that one of the Order's most sacred traditions stems from.
They may die an Initiate, but they will not join the Force without guidance.
When an Initiate dies, they automatically gain the rank of Padawan – no matter their age. They will posthumously be taken in by a Master and be gifted a braid and a lineage. If they already found their crystal and built their saber, these too will be taken care of by their new Master.
Some Masters of such Ghost-Padawans, especially those who had a bond before their passing, will live the following years as if they had a living student. They will not take on another until the Force or they themselves deems them ready, at which point the High Council will hold a honorary Knighting.
Because while the Order might lose an Initiate, no Initiate will ever be left alone.

So, THAT Clone X trooper...
is 100% definitely, undoubtedly Tech, yeah?
I mean, physically/literally:
His accent is different under the voice modulation
I stg those pained grunts as he lifted the stones were pure Tech
He runs in Creature Posture
The pocketses
He still doesn't give a fuck about following orders
But also narratively:
The lingering closeups whenever he's about to act in regard to the Batch. Is it consideration? Hesitation? They sure want us to wonder.
The story's repeated emphasis on Crosshair being able to anticipate his moves, and the way they match each other beat for beat the whole way down.
The fucking intimacy of the way he almost kills Crosshair. I mean the whole physicality of the fight, but especially the way Clone X had to stare into his eyes while he drowned him.
Why, as a writer, would you waste those story beats on someone who had no personal significance to the Batch? You just wouldn't.

listen i love when fatin and leah are soft and tender with each other just as much as everyone else, but i also think every season should have one (1) episode where leah acts out and fatin gets angry and tells her off and their faces get very close and leah’s eyes flicker to fatin’s mouth and fatin is one head shorter than leah yet 100% more intimidating and leah looks like she’s regretting making certain choices but she’s also not NOT into whatever is happening right now

Gotham: Holy shit there's a random animal running around Gotham city and no one's ever caught it before. They say it only appears in thunderstorms and anyone unfortunate enough to cross paths with it look as if they've been hit by thunder.
Dan phantom, the 'random animal' who is in fact a Raiju in question: If I destroy this place I'll be fucked over by Clockwork. But if I don't destroy this place I'll keep being followed by this brat.
Damian Wayne, the brat in question: There is an animal roaming Gotham in thunderstorms, father. We must save it!

Not to be an unbearable plot tease, but I'm editing/rewriting a chapter from Hunger Pangs book 2, and while I adore all of my characters equally, Vlad and Ursula getting to know each other properly might actually be some of my favorite moments.
His realization that he can pester Ursula to tell him more about random historical events as they actually happened, not how they are portrayed in history books, is so, so sweet. He's like an excited labrador who just found a dinosaur bone.
Ursula's very much not used to this kind of attention.
She's used to people only being interested in her power. And here's a werewolf who couldn't give less of a fuck about exploiting her magic for his own gain, and a vampire who wants to ask her what textile production was like circa the fall of the Ecrecian Empire.

(The whole thing about ghosts and liminals having fast metabolisms and resistance to chemicals, making Danny have to take way higher dose of things like medications, caffeinated drinks, and other substances for them to even do anything.)
Danny’s in Gotham and goes to get coffee from a random cafe. He asks the barista what the caffeine content of their strongest drink is and lets out a disappointed sigh when they tell him. (It wouldn’t do anything to him and would just taste super bitter)
Danny proceeds to order some super sweet and sugary drink with multiple pumps of flavored syrup and drizzle on it. And when Danny gets his drink he takes out a canister of white powder and dumps a whole tablespoon of it into his drink and stirs it.
Danny after drinking some of it and being more awake he realizes that most of the shop saw what he did and that an unknown white power in Gotham is usually something illegal. Danny knowing his luck doesn’t want to risk even the slightest chance someone decides to do something about the teenager with a container of unknown white powder just straight up tells everyone it’s pure powdered caffeine.
This somehow causes an even more dramatic reaction, after all no normal human can survive that much caffeine.
Tim who both saw the whole thing and ordered the strongest drink they made: That’s like 75 cups of coffee… should I order caffeine powder?
