Lyrium
Prompt by @14daysdalovers
Fandom: Dragon Age Inquisition Pairing: Cullen/Raina Lavellan
Read on AO3
His head throbbed behind his eyes. He clutched his burning forehead with his clammy hands. Breath shuddered out of his lungs. Heart thudded in his chest. Sweat trickled down his pallid skin.
“Cullen,” she murmured his name but it still rang in his ears and he groaned again. Her slender fingers brushed his cheek, hands coming to a stop on his shoulders. “What can I do?”
“I should take it,” he mumbled. Then all of this would stop. The headaches would go away. He would feel stronger. More like before.
“Cullen—“
“Why should I give less to the Inquisition than the Templars,” he didn’t let her reassure him otherwise. He wet his dry lips. “I should…I should—“
The door opened and he fell silent, not wanting to look at who might be seeing him like this. He didn’t want to show such weakness, but perhaps word would spread and they would finally let them go. Elevate Cassandra to his position. He was not worthy.
“Bad?” the familiar lilted voice nearly made him reach for his pommel, but he remembered his sword was leaning against the wall.
Makenna had proven that she was steadily on their side, but Cullen didn’t fully trust her. Anyone that could wield a magic he couldn’t detect of defend against would never earn his full trust. Aligning with the Inquisition suited her for now, but that may not always be the case. How could he stop such a person if she turned against them?
“I brought tea,” Makenna said, gently setting a mug onto his desk. “It will help.”
“No thanks,” he forced out.
She sighed. “Suit yourself. If you wish to suffer that is your choice.”
“Makenna,” Raina sighed, not wanting to mediate an argument between the two. “It will help, Cullen.”
“It could be poison,” he snapped.
With a huff, Raina grabbed the mug and took a swallowful. She grimaced. “That tastes awful.”
“I said it would help; I didn’t say it would taste good,” Makenna said, rolling her eyes. She swept from the room with a wayward glance at Cullen, a dare glinting in her eyes, almost compelling him to drink.
“It’s as if you two can’t help but argue,” Raina said.
“I don’t trust her.”
“I do, Cullen.” Her voice softened. “Maybe that makes me naïve, but Makenna has shown her loyalty to me.”
“I don’t think you naïve.”
“Then drink.” Raina held out the mug. “I asked her to make something for you. I hate seeing you in such pain.”
He grasped the warm mug with shaking hands, worried he might drop it, but Raina’s hands cupped his. “I don’t trust her, but I trust you,” he murmured, sipping the foul liquid. The earthen taste of damp soil mixed with strong licorice and he nearly gagged.
“Thank you,” she said, brushing sweat away from his temples. “We’ll get through this together, Cullen, but no more talk about taking lyrium. I will not demand that of you. Not ever.”
He set the empty mug down on his desk and held her hand to his cheek. “Maker, I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve you.”
She kissed his forehead. “It’s not about deserve, Cullen. I love you.”

WIP (not) Wednesday
Tagged by @plisuu, thank you so much! :) This week has been hectic work-wise, but I scraped some time to work on a couple of things...
Tumblr media
Kieran is a very spoiled child on some accounts, but Karens never last long in Amaranthine, for unknown reasons. Something in the water, clearly.
Some more Whale Au which is not an AU anymore, working on the gals. Darkened Aisling's hair a little to see how it is. Raina got a little in the sun, and her shirt is not correct for the time period (I forgot Edwardian shirts had detachable collars) and it should be corrected. The books is titled "Whales are better than you" and in this universe too she doesn't wear neither black nor white if she can help it. While Raina only wears black, white and red.

100 days of writing - day 12
Tumblr media
For @the-wip-project’s 100 days of writing - today was prompt, using discovery writing to explore a character. I choose Raina, a friend of my Inquisitor Iwyn Lavellan. I haven’t really written her much, and I’m still trying to figure her out, so this was a fun prompt.
So for today, lets do some discovery writing. I give you a prompt, and you write at least three paragraphs of a character reacting to it. Let's see who you discover.
The prompt: Unfortunately, things never go according to plan around here.
It turned into a mini story!
Fandom: Dragon Age.  Words: 407
Raina Lavellan | mid/early Inquisition | character piece Rating: G.
Plans
It wasn’t that she’d had a plan, not really. Raina Lavellan had things to do, the way she usually has things to. Gather and prepare materials, work on her current projects. There was a pattern she was working on, that she had been working on ever since Sevina, a trader and crafter from clan Boranehn had passed through. She almost had the variation she wanted, square containers tightly weaved with round knobby patterns along the side. It should be pretty. Then there were the other baskets to make, the ones she wanted to trade in Wycome. That was a plan of sorts; but it was also just the way things were.
Until they weren’t.
Because unfortunately, things never go according to plan around here.
First, there was the whole business with the shems and their wars, and their distrust of magic. Deshanna had sent off Iwyn to investigate, and she hadn’t come back. Instead the whole world exploded. Raina knows her best friend is alive and working with the humans and though Iwyn always wanted to see more of the world, none of that was according to plan. She hopes her friend is safe, a lowkey worry that’s been constant these past months. If she was braver, she’d go off to help, but she is no warrior, nor mage.
Regardless of the state of the world, some things have been the same. The humans in Wycome continue to buy and trade their wares, the elves of the Alienage there are welcoming and always ready to share a meal or a drink. Their winter home has been here in the valley for as long as anyone can remember, and according to plan, they can get what they need for their summer wanderings at the market.
But now the road is not safe, full of well armed bandits. The humans of Wycome look at them in anger, and the elves with distrust. Raina blames the hole in the sky, and the rifts in the wood. It’s connected somehow.
And now she has to spend her day convincing Iwyn’s angry little brother that he’s too inexperienced to the messenger Deshanna wants to send to Iwyn and her shems, that she’d be too upset if something happens to him. Somehow being Iwyn’s friend makes Deshanna think she can convince Branwen. Most likely she will be chasing him down the road, trying to haul him back.
Basket weaving will have to wait.

@luciferian-drama liked & gets Raina for Taurel Lavellan
Tumblr media
“A pleasure to meet you, Inquisitor.” a hand is offered, though gloved; she wears her grey warden armor with pride, bloodstained though it is. of course, in the dark of the cave, it is near impossible to tell what is blood and what is shadow. “I would apologize for being so difficult to reach, but I believe that once I explain, you will understand why it had to be so.”

THE FIRST DATE
Maker. Every day since the morning he had woken up with the resolution that he was going to quit lyrium, and quit it for good, had been hell. Of course, there were the times where it was better, easier, and when those times were good - he could almost forget his torment. He could almost overlook his addiction. It would appear to him as fiction. Who, Cullen Rutherford? Addicted to lyrium? He should think not. But, as was the unfortunate reality, a moment was but a moment, and it never took long for the withdrawal to return. He would sweat, and gasp, and choke on nothing - he would lose his mind day in and day out, and what was worse was the image he must maintain for the sake of The Inquisition. For his soldiers. For his Inquisitor. He took to battling and training far more than he ever had before, and threw himself straight into the thick of it. It was, perhaps, the only thing he could turn to for some form of relief. And he would take that relief, in whatever form it came. The day he had met her - not the day outside the Temple of Sacred Ashes where they had all but stumbled across each other's paths, a brief, hasty and tense introduction, bridged by Cassandra. She was still a prisoner, at that point. No, not that day. He didn't like to count that as the day they met. It had been messy and disastrous and unfortunate. It was not a setting the good Commander would have chosen for meeting such a woman as The Inquisitor. Anyway, the day he had met her, outside the gates of Haven, with soldiers - his soldiers - battling and training around them, had perhaps been the greatest relief from the constant terror he had ever encountered. The clashing of swords and the yelling of men and women that had initially been a pounding, relentless ache on his struggling mind, was now nothing more than ambient noise. So focused was he, on her, that it seemed all symptoms and nuisances faded away. With nothing more than a smile, and a gentle curiosity that turned his heart's pace into that of a rampaging herd of halla, Raina Lavellan had bewitched him - mind, body and soul. Maker take him, he sounded like one of Varric's blighted books. No matter. It was somewhat convenient that his natural train of thought had ventured into places romantic in nature - as he was waiting rather impatiently for the day to be done and the time for their meeting to arrive. He was a struggling addict and an oblivious pretender, but he was no fool. He heard the whispers and the laughter around the topic of The Inquisitor and The Commander's "date". It was more than a little distracting to say the least. A date? He'd thought. A date, his heart had prayed. Now, waiting for Raina outside The Inquisition's own tavern, all Cullen could think about was her name. Raina. A simple name. At first he'd even wondered if perhaps she had grown up in an alienage, given a human name to wash away the Dalish one. But as it turned out, upon carefully asking Solas, her name was indeed Elvhen. And a pretty one at that. Pronounced 'Rine-ah', it meant gracious - a name more befitting of his Inquisitor he could not envisage. She liked her name, from what he could tell and overhear and observe, but preferred that it were pronounced 'Ray-nah', simply because she adored the rain. Cullen stood, strong and solid and imposing outside the tavern, and barely noticed the way people would nod their heads at him or walk a little straighter when they passed him. He was a figure of great authority, after all. It wasn't unusual. He'd nod back, but his eyes never strayed from the relentless search they were set on. Every trace of vallaslin, every pointed ear, every sliver of porcelain skin, every strand of blonde hair- And finally, there she was. Raina Lavellan. Impossible to miss amongst the crowd, not only because she seemed to shine like the elven embodiment of a star, but because the crowd parted for her, people staring at her in awe and worship and bowing to her very presence. There was respect and wonder and hope in their eyes, as they drifted by her. And of all the people in Skyhold, she was looking right at him, and smiling. Cullen could have sworn he were melting. A part of him wished he would. "Inquisitor," he greeted, completely unable to remove the smile he was sporting. Maker, what a giddy school boy he must appear. "Commander," she responded, her voice reminiscent of a breath of fresh air, wind chimes getting caught up in the breeze, the feeling of the warm sun on your skin. It was beyond impossible not to feel completely enthralled by her, taken in completely, such an inevitability this woman was. Inquisitor Lavellan was not someone you could forget. Not easily. Not ever, if you were Cullen. He gestured for her to go ahead, holding the door open for her. It amused him, how small and dainty she truly was, her long braid bobbing about as she moved. Every step was like a dance, though she also looked ready - for anything - she moved like magic itself, and he wondered if that was a byproduct of a life spent living among nature and in the woods with her clan, or the very magic itself that ran through her and danced at her fingertips. Whatever it was, Cullen found he was very glad for it. Immediately, they were seated at a quieter table, up on the second floor, by Sera's crevice and the stairs that led up to Cole's dwelling. It was relieving to Cullen to know neither were present at the tavern that night, as Cole was off on another quest to heal the hurt of yet another person - and Sera was undoubtedly receiving the lecture of the year from Vivienne, having pranked her that afternoon. Raina looked both out of place and completely at home, here. He knew she would look like she belonged if their friends surrounded them, but as it was, she appeared a little lost, a tiny figure against the backdrop of the unruly tavern. She was too... ethereal to be here. Too fantastic. But with the right company, she looked like she could belong nowhere greater. The fact that he wasn't someone who could do this for her saddened him. "So, Commander, tell me. Have you ever been to this tavern - properly? Have you sat down and had a drink and just... relaxed?" "I can't say that I have. My schedule hasn't really allowed for-" "Is this a date?" She blurted, and then smacked her hands over her mouth, her eyes going wide. Raina was bright red, her ears tinged a shade darker at the tips. Very swiftly, Cullen's own complexion chose to mirror her own. He choked on his drink, stammering as he searched for the words to answer her. Never had he thought she would be so blunt in asking. He knew she was likely to breach the subject, as only a blighted idiot could miss the smiles and laughs and lingering looks and casual touches between them. He himself had wondered the same thing. Was this a date? Cullen scratched awkwardly at the back of his neck, very deliberately looking anywhere but at her. "I-I... suppose it is?" He answered, but somehow managed to pose it as a question - not sure whether he was allowed to label it as such. "Ma nuvenin," she laid her hand atop his, and he thought the ground had disappeared beneath him. He blinked, his heart hammering, his pulse quickening, and his cheeks reddening. "I'm afraid... I don't know what that means." He murmured, completely absorbed by the woman in front of him. "As you say," her tone was just the same as his - nervous and husky and intimate. Daring to believe this was really happening. They smiled at each other for a little while, nothing else mattering or existing for them, and for just that little while, it was quiet in their world. No Breach. No Corypheus. No warring factions threatening to tear them apart. Eventually, Cullen cleared his throat, angling his face downwards, but looked up at her, happier than he was sure he had ever been. It was that evening he realised he didn't need the lyrium. Because she was his lyrium.

All alone, no chaperone 🎶💃🦝
Josephine's nightmare in teaching @n7viper's Mihri to dance properly for the Winter Palace: Raina helping. I swear I'm sending her 3 weeks to the sea and locking her out of the house, but this is probably the one piece I had more fun with, I cackled all the time. Look at them having fun... Well, Raina having fun, Mihri probably. Cullen for sure isn't having much fun, is he. :P

My second Inquisitor, Raina Lavellan. In my second playthrough, I romanced Solas and it still haunts me to this day.

Note
Did you ever talk about your inquisitor or other dragon age oc’s? Who did you romance?
A long time ago, yes.
My canonical Inquisitor is Sayet Adaar, a Rift mage. She romanced Josie.
Ethir Lavellan is my rogue. He romanced Cassandra.
Raina Trevelyan is a Circle mage. She was going to romance Cullen before I got bored of playing.
Aleynne is my canonical Hawke. She is a purple mage who romanced Anders. Yeah. I also have Theira, a red rogue who could not decide between Fenris or Merrill before I got distracted and stopped that playthrough.
I had a Cousland who romanced Alistair in Origins and did the sacrifice. I also had a Surana who romanced Alistair and then Zevran. She is my canonical Warden.
