Episode 792: Mike Norton & Rafer Roberts on THE ROCK GODS OF JACKSON, TENNESSEE
Today's episode takes us back to a time when gods walked the earth. Oh sure, they may LOOK like four late 80's teenagers banging their way thru semi-coherent covers of rock songs, but they are, in fact, all that stands in the way of Jackson, TN suffering a biblical-level plague of . . . well . . . you'll find out in The Rock Gods of Jackson, Tennessee, the new OGN by Mike Norton & Rafer Roberts, now in comic shops from Dark Horse.
Greg talks with the duo about how to spin autobio soul-searching into the stuff of horror classics, pros & cons of working on a single release versus a longer serialized product, just what the hell a pre-press specialist does, the comics rhythm section of Allen Passalacqua and Crank!, staying focused over the long haul, and much more. All that, and the eternal debate of Metallica versus Megadeth on today’s episode!

Tarzan and the Lost Boy (1968)
Director: Robert Gordon Starring: Mike Henry, Rafer Johnson, Aliza Gur A reporter and her fiance are conducting a search in the jungle for a wild boy, the lost son of a downed geologist. Allow me a moment to wipe the drool from my mouth, what with Mike Henry being such a delicious piece of prime beef! Even if the film was no good, it would still have been worth the watch. I could easily pause…

From Modern Fantasy, by Rafer Roberts and Kristen Gudsnuk. In which Sage dreams of heroically rescuing the beautiful, delicate elf boy she has a crush on. She's interrupted by a call of distress from her freeloading roommate's trash-bag boyfriend.
In the best way, Modern Fantasy is the comic book you tried to write with your best friend on your living room floor after school. It has all the good stuff: Bright colours! Fun characters! Jokes! An epic adventure! It's also inherently feminist, queer positive, and has thrilling little asides pertaining to our own world, like gentrified neighborhoods and corrupt police.
Is this the comic book that I'll remember forever and ever as having taught me some greater truth? Probably not. But it was a very fun way to spend an afternoon. And it kind of makes me want to make some comics in colour, instead of leaving 'em black-and-white.
There is a particular joy in the shout-y boldness of bright colours.

Grumble: Memphis & Beyond The Infinite #2
Tumblr media
Grumble: Memphis & Beyond the Infinite Albatross Funnybooks 2020 Created & Written by Rafer Roberts Created & Illustrated by Mike Norton Coloured by Marissa Louise Lettered by Crank!    Lock and load! Small-time criminals Eddie and Tala are getting deployed across the universe alongside a well-armed militia of inter-dimensional mutants and weirdos. But the greatest threat may be the secrets they are keeping from each other! Will Tala finally come clean? Will the mission to rescue her mom succeed? Or will Eddie go nuts and stab everyone once the truth is revealed?    I have become such a die-hard fan of these characters.  There is something about this book that goes beyond charming and charismatic and verges into a realm where names, feelings and emotions all blur together to create an entity that was previously unknown.  It has taken on a life of it’s own and by george, or grumble, it has opened up a new world and a new way to see comics that are equally as hysterically funny as it is deadly serious!  Well deadly for the characters anyway.    I really like the way that this is being told.  Rafer has an amazing way of utilising the story & plot development through how we see the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information to fuse that offbeat sense of humour making this as much fun as it can possibly be.  The character development that we see within these pages are made up of those moments where the characters act and react to the situations and circumstances they encounter.  This means they are growing, evolving and changing right before our very eyes and it is definitely dramatic and powerful.  The pacing we see is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists & turns, not to mention the revelations we see how everything works together to create the books ebb & flow.  It also spotlights how well this is structured and I am continually impressed time and time again from what these fine folks do.    Albatross may not have a lot of books on stands and that’s okay because what they do have is some stellar storytelling in the books they do.  This is another prime example of what coming together to put a small press company into use for those who needed this outlet.  So we get this marvellous title alongside Goon and as far as I am concerned these are two of the best there is point blank period.    I have always loved Mike’s work and here we see why that is.  The linework is exquisite and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised to draw the eyes focus to the attention to detail that we see.  Yeah this is stupendous work.  How we see backgrounds being utilised to not only enhance the moments but give us depth perception, a sense of scale and that overall sense of size and scope to the book is expertly rendered.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a masterful eye for storytelling.  Also the imagination and creativity that we see on display is stunning, fun and shows such range in how Mike’s mind works.  The colour work is superb as well.  The choices made and how we see the various hues and tones within the colours to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is beautifully showcased.       This is one of if not the best uses of alternate history where humans, faeries and other supernatural beings are able to exist side by side without too much worry.  Then again hiding in plain sight as in masking their presence does seem to help a great deal.  This world they've created has such a rich embodiment that we’ve only started seeing.  Then of course there is this underlying, or out in the open, message about family, which is better the one you’re born with or the one you choose?  If your store isn’t carrying these then that needs to be rectified as soon as humanly possible.

A&A: The Adventures of Archer and Armstrong #4
Writer - Rafer Roberts
Pencils - David LaFuente
Cover - David LaFuente with Brian Reber
Everyone’s out of that bag!  But now Archer and Armstrong have to deal with a fully suped-up Bacchus who’s 50 feet tall, drunk as a skunk, and in control of an army of frat boys, sorority girls and drunken Santas!  No problem, right?
While not quite as funny as previous chapters, this issue still has some fun bits and great dialogue.  Trying to sober up a 50-foot goat-man is just so silly, it just pays off wonderfully!
We get a nice wrap-up to Armstrong’s arc here as well when he finally gets to come to terms with how he’s treated his friends in the past.  It’s not often you get legitimate character development in a humor book, so that’s a nice touch.  I hope we continue to get that throughout the series.
A fun wrap-up to the freshman storyline.  Totally worth reading!

What’s out this week? 6/27/18
Some big news this week: our manager Jake is leaving for New York in late July to work at the famous Strand bookstore. Anyway, comics are comics and releases are relentless. What’s out this week?
Tumblr media
Modern Fantasy #1 by Rafer Roberts and Kristen Gudsnuk
Longtime Fantom friend Rafer Roberts (The Adventures of Archer & Armstrong, Nightmare the Rat) is writing this wonderful fantasy sendup with our fave Kristen Gudsnuk (Henchgirl) on art duties.
Tumblr media
Tokyo Tarareba Girls by Akiko Higashimura
We absolutely love Princess Jellyfish, so we can’t wait for creator Akiko Higashimura’s new series Tokyo Tarareba Girls... about the existential crisis of turning 33. RELATABLE
Tumblr media
Multiple Man #1 by Matthew Rosenberg, Andy MacDonald, and Tamra Bonvillain
After Tom King’s experimental The Vision series had to end prematurely when he signed an exclusive contract with DC Comics and he left to work on the groundbreaking Mister Miracle over there, Marvel feels like they have to pick up the “quirky indie-style obscure series” slack, so they’ve brought in Matthew Rosenberg (known for the masterful 4 Kids Walk into a Bank) to fill that gap. Rosenberg markets Multiple Man as “your one weird friend’s favorite X-Man” and he’s back!
Tumblr media
Wakanda Forever: Amazing Spider-Man one-shot by Nnedi Okorafor and Alberto Alburquerque
Due to the blistering popularity of fan-favorite Okoye in the Black Panther film, Marvel’s putting out a series of one-shots featuring her and the rest of the Dora Milaje teaming up with various Marvel characters--the first of which is, of course, your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Written by acclaimed Nigerian-American fantasy author Nnedi Okorafor!
