If after 15 years and lots of therapy you ask your mother to acknowledge the way she failed to protect you, and she still responds by turning the volume on the television up, and only then do you begin tugging your roots free of her, are you holding a grudge, or is the grudge holding you, like your mother should have?

If your mother disowns her own mother, and her mother disowns her mother before that, and you then disown your mother, is it a grudge or a genetic trait?

When Rachel Wiley said:
I say "I am fat", he says "No, you are beautiful". I wonder why I cannot be both.
He tells me he loves me with the lights on.
I can cup his hip bones in the palm of my hands...sip wine from his collarbones.
He doesn't believe me when I tell him he is beautiful.
Parts of her poem have been swimming in my head for years now, it's so beautiful.

he average person speaks about 7,000 words a day and hears between 20,000 and 30,000 words — and that’s not even counting the number of texts, tweets, articles, and books that we see. Experts estimate that the number of written words a person reads per day clocks in at around 100,000. All this is to say, in one form or another, we’re communicating almost nonstop. That means that language, and the way that we use it, matters. Yes, we’ve seen words become even more weaponized in our fractured world, but words can also be used to unite us, create a sense of inclusion, and carry us across cultural divides. Being able to express yourself is a form of power, which is why this month we’ve gathered together five women doing just that. From the writers of television shows that we love to the poets who illuminate our desires, to those working to unite cultural ideas, here are five amazing women of words.

Any muscle uncomfortably tensed for too long will still ache even after it is at last relaxed. The sob that escapes my chest is a moth that has been slamming itself against the glass for 30 years trying to find a way out—not a hurt moth but a relief moth.
