Point and Click Adventures
I have a soft spot for point-and-click games. I find them easier to interact with than parser-based interactive fiction (mostly because I’m garbage at guessing commands - I do like limited-option games quite a lot), but they have that same old-school charm. One of the first computer games I ever interacted with was a point-and-click horror adventure, and I remember being so charmed by the skeleton-hand cursor and the spooky rooms to explore.
So I was delighted to see a strong showing of adventure games in the Itch bundle :)
Here’s the shortlist: https://itch.io/c/1017662/point-and-click-adventures
Tumblr media
I’ll be playing all of them and posting some Lets Plays since there aren’t a ton of these, but I did want to give a quick overview first.
Milkmaid of the Milky Way - https://machineboy.itch.io/milkmaid-of-the-milky-way
A story in verse, told about the collision of 1920s era with space technology. Lovely stylized art, a thoughtful soft story, sci-fi trappings. Little wonder this one won some awards.
Clam Man - https://marafrass.itch.io/clam-man
I always appreciate games that don’t take themselves too seriously. This is a charming, doodly hand-drawn adventure involving a clam man. Jokey and self-referential and very cute.
Chook & Sosig: Walk the Plank - https://armor-games-studios.itch.io/chook-sosig-walk-the-plank
Ok this one is extra charming because it’s a game-within-a-game -- you play as a cast of cute animals (some of whom are undead) who are themselves playing a pirate-themed tabletop RPG.
Eselmir and the Five Magical Gifts - https://stelexsoftware.itch.io/eselmir
A fantasy-themed adventure that seemingly plays its tropes straight. Really lovely graphics and a ton of content.
Pendula Swing: The Complete Journey - https://valiant-game-studio.itch.io/pendula-swing-the-complete-journey
1920s + fantasy trope mashup with ample romance options and many hours of content.
Winterlore - https://moroisprings.itch.io/zestre
A “folkloric point-and-click adventure” about cold winter nights and family traditions. It’s wonderfully atmospheric and just a little bit spooky.
Vincent: The Secret of Myers - https://dino999z.itch.io/vincent-the-secret-of-myers
Kind of an adventure game, kind of a visual novel, sort of horror, sort of pop-art-pastel stylistic. Apparently a demo for a much larger story.
Parsnip - https://bunbirb.itch.io/parsnip
A cute, short storybook-style-illustration game about a rabbit trying to bake a cake.
Time Stone - https://scared-square-games.itch.io/time-stone
16-bit style graphics and a very funny, trope-aware sense of humor make this nostalgia fest about a wizard’s apprentice especially enjoyable. You can play through it in a few minutes but it’s totally worth it for the amusement.
Panamorphia - https://lkmad.itch.io/panmorphia
Photo-realistic graphics, a robust story and a whole lot of puzzles to check out.
Nelly Cootalot: Spoonbeaks Ahoy - https://ashgames85.itch.io/nelly-cootalot-spoonbeaks-ahoy
A game about pirates and birds, and also puns. Cute art and challenging puzzles, and you get to be a cool lady-pirate, which is already the best thing.
The White Door - https://secondmaze.itch.io/the-white-door
Awaken in a mental institution and try to discover the mystery of how you got there. Has some horror elements and is compared to Rusty Lake Games. Note: I haven’t played this through yet so I can’t tell you if it succumbs to the ableism you tend to find in some mental-hospital-horror (but I didn’t see anyone talking about that in the comments).
