"Don't listen to me, listen. You can find the others if you are brave. They passed down all the roads long ago, and the Red Bull ran close behind them and covered their footprints. Listen! Listen, listen QUICKLY!"
The Butterfly from "The Last Unicorn" by Peter S. Beagle
Was just thinking about this quote today. I think Peter S. Beagle may be one of the most incredible poetic prose writers of all time. His prose was one of the first that made me think that prose was its own form of dark magic.
The above quote is from the film version, but the book version isn't all that different and Beagle also wrote the script for the film, so this stands to reason.
"No, no, listen, don't listen to me, listen. You can find your people if you are brave. They passed down all the roads long ago, and the Red Bull ran close behind them and covered their footprints. Let nothing you dismay, but don't be half-safe."
The core is still there as is the the most important lines:
If you are brave.
What a simple, effective line. It is so powerful I still get choked up. If, the conditional, you, the subject, are, the verb. Brave. I'd argue the reason for its effectiveness is because of how rarely we are called upon to be brave, how huge of a concept it is to be brave. Brave is an adjective but arguably, here, it is an action. It is a course of action. It is a choice. It is not calling bravery inherent, it is not calling the lack of bravery a failure. It is saying that to succeed, the unicorn must make a conscious choice to become something greater than they are. What an incredible call to adventure, how simple and heartfelt it is, because heroism and adventure as mirrored by Prince Lir later, contrasting the empty pageantry of slaying dragons for a princess's favor with the bravery of the unicorn to leave her home behind in order to find her people, and the one who has wronged them.
The other line of deep importance.
They passed down all the roads long ago, and the Red Bull ran close behind them and covered their footprints.
Again, this line is utterly haunting. What is the Red Bull? Where did they go? Down all the roads. The inherent and yet abstract distance implied, the mysticism of the road invoked. Why can they not be found? Because the Red Bull covered their footprints. They were stolen without a trace.
So much information is conveyed in so haunting a manner. It invokes the challenges the unicorn will face, because there is no easy trail to follow and there is no destination given. She will be forced to wander in search without a clear endpoint. It may never end because there are no footprints to follow and there is a huge, unknown, unknowable threat at the end. What is the Red Bull? That will be your antagonist but is it the only one? Or is it just the tool of a greater threat?
If you ever want to see how words can be magic, do yourself a favor and read "The Last Unicorn" by Peter S. Beagle. I could pick out a dozen more lines to gush over but I'll leave it there for now. The book is even more magnificent the film, and the film is indeed magnificent. It's not a very long read. But if I could ever invoke even a fraction of the beauty Peter S. Beagle brings to the page, I will consider myself an immensely accomplished writer, walking in the footsteps of giants.

Hi hi hi!! I hope you’re well 💖
Just a quick question! I’m making a typeset for thtf because I’d really love to try and bind my own copy of it SO I was just wondering if there was a quote that you really love/think suits the vibe that i could put at the start of the book? If possible two options would be wonderful bc I think I’m going to split it into 2 books (this is my first time binding a fic so I’m not entirely sure yet but I’m thinking two volumes… and I’ll also put thtb at the end of the second volume as well! So if you want a seperate quote for that I can do that too 🥰)
Thanks! 🌻
hello!!! i know i am SO late responding to this but first of all !!!!!! screaming and jumping up and down it makes me so emotional to hear that ur binding thtf if u do end up doing it and want to/would feel comfortable sending pics 2 me please do i would love to see <3 but in the meantime yes let me find some quotes!!
from ch 19: "She’s a phoenix, Dorcas thinks—something doomed to destroy itself, the way any good hero is."
from ch 33: "There is no ending where the wax does not melt; there is no conclusion to the story where the sea is not waiting."
i feel like those both kinda capture the vibe for like...the first part of the story? and then if ur splitting it into two i feel like this part of their conversation in ch 40 sort of encapsulates the war years:
"We have now. We’re alive, and we get to have that, and it’s like—don’t laugh, alright? But it’s like…trying to catch a butterfly. If you hold it too tight, you’ll only crush its wings. It just—it lands on you, and it’s there, and it’s beautiful, and you have the moments you have, and then it flies away. It still matters. It isn’t any less beautiful."
or like the end of that same conversation:
“How about this,” she whispers, as she strokes Marlene’s cheek, “How about we make a promise, yeah? I won’t let you die, so long as you don’t let me die, okay?”
Marlene laughs, a small, choked sound.
“That’s a stupid promise, Meadowes,” she says, leaning into Dorcas’s touch. Dorcas smiles.
“I know,” she whispers, “But let’s make it anyway.”
and then i also really like this part from ch 47: "She wants to be the worst thing that has ever happened to her. She wants to be the only thing that ever hurts her. She wants to be the thorn that pierces and remains under skin, forcing the body to grow around it. That’s love, isn’t it?"
and then from the very last ch there's: "But what point is there, really, in living a hungry life? What point is there in rationing joy and hurt and risk when it could all go sour in an instant?"
if u wanted, u could also use the two quotes that i used on the very last chapters, which are both from the same scene in the book the last unicorn:
1: “I am myself still. This body is dying. I can feel it rotting all around me. How can anything that is going to die be real? How can it be truly beautiful?”
- The Last Unicorn, by Peter S. Beagle
2: “Whatever can die is beautiful—more beautiful than a unicorn, who lives forever, and who is the most beautiful creature in the world. Do you understand me?” “No,” she said. The magician smiled wearily. “You will. You’re in the story with the rest of us now, and you must go with it, whether you will or no.”
- The Last Unicorn, by Peter S. Beagle
anyway, those are my suggestions--but of course just go with whatever you like, ur the one binding it! and i know this response has been very delayed so it's possible u won't even need it anymore, but here it is just in case <3

Cas beginning to doubt. Cas deciding for himself. (For the first time I feel.) From that first moment of doubt, there was no peace for her; from the time she first imagined leaving her forest, she could not stand in one place without wanting to be somewhere else. Cas rebelling against heaven. She trotted up and down beside her pool, restless and unhappy. Unicorns are not meant to make choices. We are making it up as we go. She said no, and yes, and no again, day and night, and for the first time she began to feel the minutes crawling over her like worms. Cas is the last unicorn.

Top 5 Books To Read This Year
Tagged by @xserpx (thank you :D)
I have this weird thing where I prioritize authors I haven’t read yet in order to find out if they are a new favourite. This happens because I already know I can count on the books I have left to read from authors I really like. That means this list doesn’t have any Octavia E. Butler, Patricia A. McKillip, Kazuo Ishiguro, etc, even though of course I am always excited to read their books that I have left to read.
1. “The Curse of Chalion” by Lois McMaster Bujold - This was sold to me by @beeblackburn as a more optimistic Hobb and from the two chapters I’ve read already I did notice some similarities in characters and feel, but the writing isn’t as pretty. I put it on hold because I am reading “Imago” in order to finish the Xenogenesis trilogy and those two are ebooks. I am trying to stick to 1 ebook at a time. If I read more than one book at once it will have to be a different format. Currently I am also listening to “The Last Unicorn” audiobook and I started “Station Eleven” on paperback, for example. Also, I have been more in a scifi mood, but Peter S. Beagle is changing that a little and pulling me back into fantasy again.
2. “The Traitor Baru Cormorant” by Seth Dickinson - This book has so much hype around it and people keep saying how good it is and how the ending destroyed them. I too want to be emotionally crushed by a book again. I started this book last year actually, but I put it on hold to do some reading challenges and then ended up reading books with similar themes. However, I decided to read it again from the beginning this year and I did love the chapters I read of Baru’s childhood so it will not be a problem to reread them at all. My only fear is that I might want to read the other books immediately and the series isn’t finished yet.
3. "Jade City” by Fonda Lee - I can’t stand people hyping these books so much and me not being a part of it. I keep hearing how great the characters are and how much the 3rd book made them cry and once again I also want to be obliterated by a book. I need to know. I am not aiming super high for character work because I know how hyped books work, but I expect “The Poppy War” level at least. I am a bit in doubt about this one because I don’t like mafia movies and such, but I heard someone put “Jade Legacy” along with “Fool’s Fate” as books that made them cry so now I got to know (if I ever get there). Points for being a complete trilogy.
4. "A Wizard of Earthsea” by Ursula K. Le Guin - Storytime: I tried this book before and was not into it. I started it on ebook and wasn’t feeling it then I listened to half of the audiobook and my mind wandered so much I missed most of the story and I was so bored. HOWEVER, I had the wrong expectations going into it. I was expecting something similar to how Hobb approaches story in Realm of the Elderlings since so much in it seems to have been inspired by this book. Turns out that was the wrong approach so I tried reading it again recently keeping in mind that this would be closer to a Patricia A. McKillip book and... it went much better. It really gave me the same feeling as “The Riddle-Master of Hed”, which is an unusual McKillip work because it’s more traditional fantasy and less fairytale-esque, but I still enjoy. I already asked a friend to let me borrow his book that includes the first 4 in this series so if he remembers I will get it tomorrow. Reading it will happen eventually.
5. “Deathless” by Catherynne M. Valente - Look, you people really need to stop posting quotes from this author around because they are really beautiful and I am so tempted all the time. I don’t even remember what the book is about. All I remember is that every time I read quotes from it I am like “wow that’s really pretty” and yet I still haven’t read it! That will hopefully end this year. I will at least try this book out.
6. (because I’m a cheater) “Lonely Castle in the Mirror” by Mizuki Tsujimura - The concept of this book is magnificent and have you seen the cover? It really seems like it would be my thing. Plus, storygraph says this is emotional and mysterious. Two of my favourite moods. I got to read it.

THE LAST UNICORN: THE LOST JOURNEY is a must-read for any fans of THE LAST UNICORN
Tumblr media
SIX BLUE MARBLES loves Peter S. Beagle’s THE LAST UNICORN: THE LOST JOURNEY.
My Rating: ⛤⛤⛤⛤⛤
THE LAST UNICORN: THE LOST JOURNEY is a look at the beginnings of Peter S. Beagle’s beloved novel The Last Unicorn and what paths the unicorn could have taken on her journey to find the other unicorns. Reader’s meet a cast of old and new characters as well as a new journey that is just as enticing as the one fans of The Last Unicorn are familiar with.
I’m really not surprised that I loved THE LAST UNICORN: THE LOST JOURNEY, I love everything I’ve read of Beagle and this is no different. I loved seeing what parts of Beagle’s original story of the unicorn made it into the final novel, what changed, and what characters and aspects were given to others and which aspects were dropped all together. Probably the most interesting thing about THE LAST UNICORN: THE LOST JOURNEY is how different the journey of the unicorn is from the book we know and love, not in terms of the new characters we meet but in the setting.
Tumblr media
I loved the new characters that were introduced as well as the old familiar butterfly. Though different in many ways from the final product, The Last Unicorn: The Lost Journey reminded me again of why I love this book so much, and it still held that charm and beauty despite all the differences.
And the illustrations! If the cover alone wasn’t enough to get you excited for this book then Stephanie Law’s illustrations will! They add a whole new kind of magic to the story and are absolutely stunning to look at.
<snip>
THE LAST UNICORN: THE LOST JOURNEY is a must-read for any fans of The Last Unicorn who want to see the bones of the story they love and a journey and experience like no other. The magic is still there, as is the love for this amazing story, only in a different way.
The German MEIN LESEZEICHEN BLOG praises IN CALABRIA.
The style of the author is sublime and magical. The way Beagle describes the unicorn is unique and breathtaking. Not effective or clichéd. The unicorn is not portrayed as something special, but as something that is one with the world. On the contrary to the unicorn, man seems to be something out of the ordinary, something peculiar. The magic is clearly in the descriptions of the unicorn.

It's hard for me to connect the story with this word, but the story is romantic. By that I do not mean that she is cheesy or could be equated with romance novels. The romance goes deeper, is more complex, pure and sublime. The story covers many things: love and longing, criticism of people, of his dealings with nature, of society. There are elements of the uncanny and just as fantastic as supernatural elements. Again, the story seemed to me to be strongly based on the literary-scientific concept of Romanticism.
What also made me enthusiastic was that the author captured the mood of southern Italy very well and put it on paper. He draws an authentic picture with beautiful and ugly pages. What baffled me when I read was about to end as Claudio plunges into a daredevil fight.
With the help of the timeless and magical narrative style, I felt really comfortable and in good hands while reading.
<snip>
I love the stories of Peter S. Beagle. A reading recommendation goes out to all unicorn fans of the old school.

Iain Nicholas Mackenzie on THE GREEN MAN REVEW recounts an encounter with Peter S. Beagle.
Yeah that’s Peter Beagle — author of such delightful works as the above-quoted  SUMMERLONG along with IN CALABRIA, Tamsin and of course The Last Unicorn to name but three of his many works — over in the sitting area in the Kitchen here at Kinrowan Hall.
Reynard and he have been talking about ales and he says that ‘When I can get it — and I only know one pub in Berkeley that stocks it — I’ll take Blackened Voodoo, which is really a dark ale (as is the Brazilian Xingu, which is even harder to find). Blackened Voodoo is a Dixie Beer product; I think Katrina almost put them out of business — anyway, I couldn’t find it for quite a while. Sierra Nevada’s always a reliable bet, but BV’s worth the extra searching…’
He’s just been offered a particularly decadent chocolate bar and the Several Annie is asking him if he wants it: ‘Whatever you may have heard, it is not true that I have ever killed for really good chocolate. Trampled … well, sort of.  But only when the person was directly between the chocolate and me.  I mean, after all …’ and I see the chocolate is indeed to his liking.

I’ll show and update with the bingo card every 3 months here.
⌘ So instead of health problems at the start of the month I now had car problems. My car had its yearly check up at the end of February. In March I had to return to fix a shake while driving. And in April I seemed to have problems with my cooling system. It was not fun.  I gave me a lot of stress and sadness. I tried very hard not to let it rule me. It got fixed and as we were driving back from my parents at Easter, another light went on. Grr.
⌘ The change of the clock at the end of March messed a bit with Merijn’s sense of bed time and he keeps coming out of bed for 30 minutes. I hope he’ll get used to it again because it being light when he goes to bed is just going to get worse.
⌘ We got some fun bits for our garden to cheer it up.
⌘ We took Merijn to a fairytale theme park more geared towards his age with a very large playground as well. He loved it. He was so tired but he loved it.
⌘ Then a few days later Merijn got the sixth disease/roseola. He broke out in bumps and red splots over night, ended up with a high fever for 24 hours and then his temperature went back to normal. The break out took a few days longer to go away, een more so with some of the warmer days we had. He was better in time for Easter
⌘ For Easter we went to my parents. Which was fine. We had some great weather. Merijn stayed the week with my parents and we went back on King’s Day.
⌘ For some reason I got a bad case of hayfever? And then I woke up the last weekend of April and I had a swollen, stiff and sometimes painful knee. Who even knows what I did…

Identity asks: 12, 15, 30?
12. dog person or cat person?
Can I say both? XD
I mean, if I absolutely had to pick, I’d go with a cat because they mesh with my personality better? I love dogs (I’ve always wanted a Doberman since I was a kid after seeing Oliver and Company, and I loved my dog when we had one & I like seeing other people’s dogs), but they require a lot of care and attention that I’m not so great at providing. Cats tend to be more self sufficient (though thinking about it, a dog might be good to force me out of the house to take them on walks and stuff).
I’ve had one dog and two cats (rest in piece all three), and I loved having both.
15. five most influential books over your lifetime.
Oh, let’s see. These aren’t in any order, but I’ve got off the top of my head:
The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle – Book is near perfect. I cry every time I read it. I love that every adaption of it is near book accurate (both the cartoon & the IDW Comic) and I cry every time I read those. It’s just such a good book, with such a bittersweet ending, and hng. Everything about it from the setting, to the characters, to the moral grayness everywhere is just so good. I could go on for much longer, but know it’s one of my favorite books and is the reason when I hear “Red Bull” think of this book instead of the drink.
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson – It’s one of my favorite books. I’ve always had soft spot for single father stories and Jim & Captain Silver’s relationship is just one of those good ones that’s sort of tragic, but I still can’t help but love it. It’s a great story, and has been adapted into two of my favorite movies: Muppet Treasure Island and Treasure Planet.
Pressure by Jeff Strand - This is probably the most modern book on this list. It’s a dark humor, horror story about two friends (Alex and Darren) who meet as kids and grow up to be two very different men. Specifically, Darren grows up to be a serial killer and decides that Alex is still his best friend in the whole world and that they should be killers together (Alex isn’t keen on that idea). I wrote a full review over on Goodreads, but honestly, just any book that explores a villain with genuine affection for other people (while still very much being an awful person) is just such a wonderful dichotomy that I adore it when it’s explored (which is probably why I write it so much myself).
Battle Royale by Koushun Takami – This man managed to make a HUGE cast of characters all individual, unique, and memorable with some of them only getting a page or two to themselves. The book is violent, emotional, over the top, and a rush. I read the entire thing in two sittings, near non-stop. I loved the book, I loved the ending, and I like that despite all the death and horrible things, it’s not a hopeless novel. There’s some good stuff in there in all the horror, and I can only hope to get that balance in my own novels.
Misery by Stephen King - Stephen King is my author hero; not only do I love what he’s written, I love how much he’s written. I can only pray to be as prolific as he is & I love his dark sense of humor, and the way he can make the most ridiculous things seem intense and scary when they’re written down and you’re in the moment, vs when you laugh about how funny it really was later. Out of all his books I’ve read, Misery was my favorite. Paul and Annie just have this chemistry together that’s horrible and fascinating, and they play off each other so well. Annie is a truly terrifying woman, but she also has her little moments of being relatable, and then she goes right back to riding over a cop with a lawn mower. And then of course, Paul. He’s a great narrator and I loved him.
30. Pick one of your favorite quotes.
“When it comes to a beautiful woman, age is quite irrelevant.” - Carrot Glace from Sorcerer Hunters (anime dub).
Carrot Glace is one of my favorite characters of all time. He’s a woman-chasing, hound dog, but there is a reason everyone in that series (including his brother) fell head over heels in love with him. This quote was from one of the earlier episodes, where he met a girl named Lake who aged an entire lifetime in a single day & Carrot was falling in love with her when she was his age & a little older. But when she arrived as an old woman, she asked how he could still want her and he gently placed a flower in her hair with a warm smile and dropped that line and it was just–that was it. The defining moment that established him as a good man, and not just a skirt chaser. He liked Lake for Lake no matter what she looked like, and it really struck me when I was younger and watching it for the first time, and I just love it still.

Thelastunicornnatural. Cas and the unicorn becoming human und thus mortal. For the first time I feel. Cas getting his grace back and Lady Amalthea retransforming. I have been mortal, and some part of me is mortal yet. I am full of tears and hunger and the fear of death, although I cannot weep, and I want nothing, and I cannot die. I am not like the others now, for no unicorn was ever born who could regret, but I do. I regret. Cas confessing his love and dying. As for you and your heart and the things you said and didn't say, she will remember them all when men are fairy tales in books written by rabbits.
