One of my favorite things about BG3 is that the main 7 so perfectly encapsulate how the average DnD party interacts with each other.
And not only that but you can tell a lot about what their players would be like!
Shadowheart was made by the edgy bisexual “good Christian girl” who’s discovering herself in college for the first time away from her family. She’s falling out of her faith and her friends are waiting for her to crack. She thinks playing DnD is so rebellious of her. She WILL become emo after this is over
Halsin was made by the secret nudist in attempts to live vicariously through his character but has now revealed ✨things✨ about himself, and is totally unaware of it but everybody else knows it and just love that he’s having a good time
Lae’zel was made by a dude (probably straight and cis) who just wants to play as a hot fantasy chick
Gale was made by the most nerdy autistic boy who just wants somebody to date. Anybody. He’s really not picky.
Wyll was probably made by a trans man with. Idk why but he was. He doesn’t even have trans vibes to me but his player does
Karlach was made by a lesbian with mommy issues who’s never played DnD before, didn’t know if she’d like it, but got dragged into it by her friends who “know she’ll like it” and they were 100% right (and she and Shadowheart’s player WILL end up dating)
And Astarion was made by a gay person who is infamous for torturing every single character they create. They kept his character under wraps during creation but then announced on the first day of the campaign that this would be their, quote, “magnum opus of fruity traumatized characters”

just saw ur gale/mystra analysis post. im new to the game and dnd lore and honestly… ur take on their relationship feels like the most natural/compelling one??? esp since its all too easy to simplify topics that have many facets and nuance….

My pleasure! (Bee from the future here: congrats, you spawned another meta!)
I love complicated characters, WAY more than I like a clear cut-and-dry case. Flaws, to me, are what make a character compelling and lead to interesting stories about them with choices that can get them into situations. I'm both writing a fanfic and running a campaign where I'm playing as Gale, and in the interest of portraying him properly and in-character, I've gone into SUCH a deep dive into all the decisions and facts that make him him.
It helps to, y'know, also be in love with the fictional wizard, but I digress
The thing about Baldur's Gate 3 is that no character in there is perfect. I've seen a couple analyses about the theme of continuing cycles of abuse vs breaking out of them, but in my mind, in terms of the characters themselves, it goes like this:
The origin characters have just come out of the lowest situation of their lives (Lae'zel being the exception; being tadpoled is a gith's worst nightmare. You're seeing that lowest situation in real time).
Not the lowest point, mind. Gale's lowest was probably the day after he got the Orb. Wyll's was probably the day his father cast him out. Karlach's was the day she lost her heart. But the lowest, accepted normal for them is what they've just left.
They're then thrown out of their depth and forced to rely on you to live. That's #1 priority: living. We get the extremes of these characters before we get their nuances, because they're quite literally at their breaking points.
Then once we get to know them, we see their wants, their hopes, their fears, as they open up to us. Every companion's story is at their own pace, but they all have a moment where they ping-pong between despondency and desire. Sometimes that desire is what we know isn't good for them, like Shadowheart wanting to be a Dark Justiciar. Sometimes that despondency is only for a flicker, like Astarion's realization that he's condemned 7000 people to a half-life of tortured spawnhood for as long as he's been a vampire.
Romance lets us crack all that open more, because if you pursue a romantic partner, they see you as their closest confidant. They WANT to trust you, so they're more willing to explain how they see the world and what decisions they want to chase.
And then their endings. Those often get simplified as good/bad, continuing the cycle vs breaking away from it. But how is Duke Wyll on the same platform as Ascended Astarion? He's not evil, he's not even entirely unhappy. He might even have broken out of his abusive cycle with Mizora, if you played your cards right. And Ascended Astarion is overjoyed, even if he is remarkably more cold.
I think that the endings are less a dichotomy of "this is good for them" vs "this is bad for them," and more one of "bringing out their best traits" vs "bringing out their worst."
Wyll's worst trait is being willing to sacrifice his own wants for whatever people desire of him. His best is standing for what he believes in and ensuring people are safe. Duke Wyll leans into that necessity to turn the other cheek in the name of people who count on him, while the Blade of Avernus has seized that moral compass of his and forged it out of mithral.
Shadowheart's worst trait is blind obedience at the cost of her individuality, while her best is her desire to be kind to things that don't deserve to be hurt. Mother Superior Shadowheart's whole life is defined by Shar. Selûnite Shadowheart's life is defined by her hospitality, especially towards animals.
Karlach's worst trait is how willing she is to accept that things are (to quote her) fucked, letting despair override hope. Her best is her durability in the face of horror. Exploded Karlach would rather die than try to work out a solution in the Hells, because she's terrified of facing Zariel alone. Mindflayer Karlach has accepted her fate and decides to give up her heart and soul to go out a hero, losing who she is. Fury of Avernus Karlach is willing to keep fighting for a solution, and by the time the epilogue happens, she's got her sights set on one.
Astarion's worst trait is his desire for power over people. His best trait is using the tools he has to his advantage. Ascended Astarion has let his powerhungry nature and paranoia lead all of his decisions, with his sights set on dominating mankind. Spawn Astarion has embraced what he is, and carved out a life for himself where he can do as he pleases.
Lae'zel's worst trait is her blind fanaticism, while her best trait is her individual dedication, making her loyalty a marriage of the two. Ascended Lae'zel is a meal for the lich queen, turning a blind eye to all Vlaakith's tried to do to her and literally being consumed by her fervor. Champion of Orpheus Lae'zel has turned her loyalty into something productive for diplomacy. Faerûnian Lae'zel has seized her individuality by the throat and decided her own future.
And then Gale. Gale's worst traits are his hubris and, paradoxically, his low self worth. His best traits are his creativity and wonder for the world. God Gale is the embodiment of ambition, having burned away all but that in pursuit of perfection. Exploded Gale has let his remorse blot out all hope for a redemption in which he does not die, because he thinks he's earned it. Professor Gale leads his life by embracing the school of Illusion and letting his creativity thrive, teaching others to do the same. House Husband Gale has multiple creative projects he's working on, and Adventurer Gale is always finding new sights to see and wanting to share them with you.
There are arguments to be made on which ending the origins are happiest in, certainly, or which one benefits them the most, but each ending represents the extreme of a facet they possess.
So with all that, there's a sort of malleable method to figuring out the ins and outs of a character.
You take their endings—all of them, all variables they can have—and reverse-engineer the flaws and details they carry. Then you start to notice how those work into their approvals for minor things: Astarion approving of your taking of the Blood of Lathander, or Shadowheart approving of standing up for Arabella. Getting a list of approvals and disapprovals is helpful, but having those endings on hand tells you why they react like that to a majority of their decisions.
You take their romance-route explanations of how they act, and apply those to earlier decisions. Astarion's confession to manipulating you and Araj-prompted admittance to using himself as a tool brings to light how he reacts to your decisions, regardless of his actual opinions on them. Wyll's fairytale romance and love of poetic adages speaks to his idealistic nature, and why he takes a sometimes-blinded approach to decisions in which the "right" answer isn't always the smart one.
You take their beginning reactions to stress and use that to measure how future decisions impact them. Lae'zel locks down and gets snappy when she's scared, while Gale immediately turns to diplomacy. Shadowheart has gallows humor, while Wyll turns to quiet acceptance. If they break from these and seem even worse, you know the situation is more dire in their minds than having seven days to live.
And then you factor in all their fun facts and dialogue choices and backstories.
A wizard falls in love with a goddess and her magic, attempts to retrieve a piece of her power for her, is scorned for his attempt and is cursed to die.
Give that backstory to a Tav. Look at how it changes.
A chaotic good wizard fell in love with a goddess, thought retrieving a piece of power for her would be a showy bouquet of love, and was punished for not thinking things through.
A lawful evil wizard fell in love with a goddess's power, snatched the most precious thing she owned, tried to use it to barter his way through to the secrets she kept, and was given a swift retribution.
Same backstory. Same class, same act, same goddess. Wildly different connotations. Wildly different conclusions as to who is in the wrong.
If you take all there is to Gale, all that the game shows us makes up his character, and apply it to this backstory, you get what really happened:
A wizard, enamored with magic, fell in love with a goddess. His desires led him to want more than she was willing to give. In his well-buried fear of inadequacy, he concluded that the reason she wouldn't indulge his ambitions was because he just hadn't proven himself worthy enough. So he tried to prove himself, but he lacked the context for what he was proving himself with. And the goddess, seeing a weapon that had killed her predecessor, saw this ambitious wizard as losing his way and coming for her just like the weapon's creator had. She was angry, she withdrew his link to her, and he didn't know why. So he drew the conclusion that she took his powers to punish him, and let that encompass his fall from grace.
Was he wrong to reach for what was out there?
If you knew that the answers to everything you cared about were not only known, but kept by someone you loved—someone who adored you—what would you do to ask to see them? What if your curiosities were if there were other planets with life out there, or how dark matter worked, or whether or not we could one day travel in the stars? What if it was the potential cure to an illness that's little-understood, or the way to make a program you dreamt up, or the scope of the true limits of your artistic talents? Would your answer change?
Was she wrong to cut him off?
If you were once hurt, and the person you loved—the person who adored you—brought the thing that caused it to your door, believing you'd want it, how would you react to seeing it? What if that thing was someone you thought you'd broken contact with, like a friend or family member you'd been trying to avoid? Would your answer change?
That's the sort of scope that needs to be applied to this, on both sides. You have to take the perspectives of each party, and apply two analogies instead of one.
Gale saw the vastness of the universe, untold wonders, the solution to every question he could ever dream up, and saw Mystra as withholding this from him because she thought he just wasn't worthy enough. To claim Mystra knew his perspective does her a disservice.
Mystra saw a cruel weapon she thought long gone, in the hands of someone who could use it, brought right to her, and thought Gale was willingly following the path of Karsus. To claim Gale knew her perspective does him a disservice.
Should Gale have researched his prize more, so he knew just what he was obtaining? Should he have kept his hands off a cursed book that would devour him? Of course he should have.
Should he have given up on chasing his dreams?
Should Mystra have understood that Gale's pursuit of power was nothing like Karsus'? Should she have communicated when she was angry instead of giving the cold shoulder? Of course she should have.
Should she have given him the benefit of the doubt?
That's the root of their falling out. That's what leads to hurt being inflicted. Understandable, human reactions to the situations they perceive. Unhealthy, unwise choices made afterwards.
You work backwards from this to figure out their dynamic as Chosen and goddess. You work forward from this to understand more of where Gale and Mystra are during the events of Baldur's Gate 3. Gale reached too high, and understands this. His goddess hates him, and he regrets this. Mystra isolated Gale, and understands this. Her Chosen wants redemption, and she wants to make it happen.
Just like we took Gale's character into account, we also have to take Mystra's.
A goddess is faced with a problem. She uses someone who's desperate for approval to solve it, by telling him to kill himself.
An evil goddess is faced with a threat to her reign. She sees someone who's unfailingly loyal and hates himself, and elects to have him tear himself apart rather than do anything about it.
A good goddess is terrified of the future. She sees someone who tried to hurt her, who's going to die anyways, and tells him to use it to save the world.
Same story. Same act, same power, same pawn. Different character. Different perspective. Different outlook on whether or not this is the right thing to do.
Mystra has died, multiple times, to people trying to stake claim to her domain. Someone appears with the very thing that could do it again, right as she's regained her stability.
She does not see mortals the way mortals do. She is timeless. She is eternal. She has a duty to protect billions of people, and one person lost to protect that number is more than worth the sacrifice.
People like to bring up the Seven Sisters as proof of Mystra's cruelty. For those unaware, Mystra asked permission to, then possessed, a woman, used her to court a man (with dubious consent from the woman), and bore seven children, all of whom were capable of bearing Mystra's power as Chosen without dying. The woman she possessed was killed in the process (reduced to no more than a husk, then slain by her now-husband, hoping to end her suffering), and the husband was horrified by the whole story.
Mystra needed Chosen in order to restore herself in the event that she was killed again, to prevent magic as a whole from collapsing and wreaking havoc on the mortal realm, like it had in the few seconds Mystryl had been dead. Elminster, Khelben Blackstaff, and the Seven Sisters contributed to this. The more Chosen she has, the better; what happens if Elminster dies? She can't afford to have all her eggs in one basket.
Mystra has Volo (yeah, that Volo) as a Weave Anchor, imparted with a portion of her power to prevent the Weave from shredding itself to pieces in her absence. All Chosen of Mystra are Weave Anchors by nature. The creation of Weave Anchors was mandated by Ao, the Overgod, and Chosen are the best way to make sure those anchors aren't drained by ambitious people hoping for godlike power. Chosen can, and will, defend themselves, unlike static locations (which Mystra also has). The anchors are why the Weave wasn't completely obliterated during Mystra's last death, when the Spellplague rose up, because they stabilized the Weave around them.
Everything Mystra does is in the name of the big picture, to prevent a catastrophe like the fall of Netheril from happening again. Her restriction of magic, her numerous Chosen, her creation of Weave Anchors, her destruction of those who would claim her power, it's all in the name of the stability she's been charged with. Dornal Silverhand's grief and Elué Silverhand's death, while regrettable, were worth it to bring seven more anchors into existence to save all of the Material.
So someone appears with the Crown of Karsus, potentially powerful enough to try to kill the other gods in the name of the Dead Three. She can't risk being a target of them. She can't risk the destruction of magic again.
Gale is going to die. He lives in fear. He begs for forgiveness.
In Mystra's eyes, she's offering him the best outcome. She'll let him die in service to her, to save Faerûn, and she'll forgive him. He's going to die anyways, and if he does this, she'll give him everything (she thinks) he could ever want in her realm. She's asking him to do what (she thinks) is the right thing.
"She would consider what she considers to be forgiveness."
Notably, she leaves the decision in his hands. She doesn't have Elminster lead him to the Nether Brain. She doesn't activate him as soon as he's there. When he lives yet, she doesn't revoke the charm that keeps him stable. And when he declines, when he lets it go and starts pursuing Karsus' path, she doesn't smite him on the spot.
She is (she thinks) being incredibly patient. If Gale is going to try to be Karsus II, she's ready for him. If he decides to walk off and keep the Orb, he's dug his own grave in the Fugue Plane (those who don't have a god to claim them roam endlessly as husks and form a wall of bodies around the City of Judgement).
From her perspective, she's not being unreasonable. But from the perspective of a mortal, she absolutely is.
"Now, I have a question for thee: what is the worth of a single mortal's life?"
This is a question she cannot answer properly.
I think a lot of characterization is lost whenever someone paints one of them as being totally in the right. But I also think you have to be invested in them as characters to want to see that characterization. If you want to write about Mystra, you have to try to get into her head, analyze the decisions she made, figure out why she thinks she was right, and follow the pattern.
Gale's sacrifice is a very predictable thing for her to ask for.

Batfamily As Interactions With My Own Siblings
- Call and response with quotes or song lyrics. Dick and/or Steph use this most often since most of their siblings are angsty (Jason, Tim, Damian, Cass), so this forces them to acknowledge them. To not respond is of the HIGHEST offense.
- Sometimes Damian, or Cass, will come flying out of nowhere to surprise attack one of their siblings. Frankly, all of them do this, but those two are most common. Poor Duke is always the most caught off guard, in spite of his powers.
- Tim is almost always the last one down for dinner. Sometimes, he doesn’t even come down until after everyone else has eaten. Alfred is always kind enough to leave a plate for him to reheat. One time, he found that plate on the floor beneath a laundry basket that was propped up by a stick, cartoon-trap style. His siblings were hiding around the corner, watching him intently.
- Jason sometimes gets distracted in the bathroom, picking at scabs or old scars on his face in the mirror. His siblings (particularly Damian) get really pissed if they've heard the toilet flush and still have to wait for ten minutes to use the bathroom. (Jason has pointed out that there are other bathrooms. This doesn't prevent him from getting yelled at.)
- Duke has been known to go on fierce literary rants to Jason. Most recently about a certain shitty book he had to read for school.
- Tim started a DnD campaign with Dick, Barbara, and Duke. The party got sidetracked going undercover as an "exterminator" company, and helping a poor milliner jumpstart her hat business (don't ask how those were related). Tim is scared that they may have completely forgotten their original quest.
- Sometimes Steph forgets who she's told something to, and will repeat information to people who've already heard this from her.
- Jason, on the other hand, will forget what he HAS been told by people, and infuriates people with his questions of things he's already "had this conversation about."
- Bruce has repeatedly told Damian that Batcow is not a house pet. Nonetheless, he's found Damian in his room reading a book to his cow several times.
- Dick and Jason have reenacted many YouTube videos on patrols, from quoting back and forth to one another, to performing dangerous parkour stunts.
- Damian once tried to strangle Jason after he won Unstable Unicorns by almost exclusively trolling Damian and preventing him from gaining a final unicorn five times in a row. In one game. Damian has still not forgiven him.
- Jason once offered Tim a hit of his cigarette. Dick later found out and flipped his shit.
- The kitchen is a hazardous place to be. The kids pretend to stab each other a lot.
- Jason communicates primarily through saying either "I'll kill you," or "I'd rather die." Although sometimes, when someone's talking (typically Steph or Dick), he'll randomly interject to say, "you're a [insert obscure twist of their words]."
- For example, Steph was once vacuuming the rug with a very old vacuum and said, "this vacuum would be terrible at cocaine." Jason replied from the couch, not looking up from his book, "you're a terrible cocaine vacuum."
- The siblings binged the Chernobyl HBO series in one night. Right off the bat, Damian went on a rant about how irresponsible the guy committing suicide was for not finding his cat a new home first and just leaving out food. He also had to leave the room during the dog part in later episodes. When Dick was sent to tell him it was over, he was found with his face buried in Titus and/or Ace's fur.
- On a lighter note, Jason commentated over many of the really heavy parts of that documentary, making it way funnier than it was supposed to be. Sometimes he genuinely argued with the TV.
- There is a quote book of obscure things they've said out of context. Here are some excerpts:
"Haha, losers, imagine having parents." - Jason
"And that's why child labor is good and justifiable." - Steph
"They really underestimate my stabbing abilities." - Damian
"This jacket is vegan leather. Which means I skinned a vegan and turned them into a jacket." - Cass
"That's how my brain works; it doesn't." - Tim
"But we're stressful together." - Dick
"As Thomas the Tank Engine once said: chuga chuga choo choo, I'm a sexy dinosaur." - Also Dick
"If you wouldn't have been killed by Nazis, are you even an interesting person?" - Duke
"Alright, shit pisser, let's rumble." - Jason
"Keep your rabid animal away from my crab legs." - Barbara
- Barbara has a tendency to play true crime podcasts while she works. People only ever seem to walk in during the weirdest parts. She doesn't feel the need to explain herself; she finds the looks on their faces hilarious.
- The household Alexa will respond to Dick unprompted, and it genuinely freaks him out. It doesn't do that for anyone else, and he thinks it's out to get him. This is why he has a Google at home in Blüdhaven instead.
- Jason isn't the most hygienic person, which concerns the family sometimes. Dick had learned that when he visits wherever Jason is living at the moment and "oops, forgets" his shampoo or body wash or whatever, Jason will end up using it. Jason has caught on, but will never openly admit that he's grateful for it.
- Dick will ruffle Damian's hair out of affection. Tim will do it to piss him off.
- Tim and Damian often kick each other without any other interaction. Bruce finds it troubling. Dick reminds him that he and Jason used to do the same thing (mainly Jason kicking Dick).
- When Tim and Steph play video games, it's not uncommon for Steph to hijack a car just to try to run Tim over while he tries to do side quests.
- Cass is the Super Smash Bros champion. And the Mario Kart champion. And tends to carry everyone when playing multi-player. Mostly because Steph tries to sabotage them at every corner, and only Cass is able to adapt.
I may do more of these, but I didn't want this to be TOO long.

i know the request is asking abt bimbo!gf being a dungeon master but first i feel like we as a society need to talk about eddie being down something horrifying for a bimbo.
he's watching you in awe while you pick out your outfits, and staring mindlessly while you do your makeup. you'd often catch him on your bed, lying on his stomach with his hands holding his face while his feet kick around in the air as he stares at you through your vanity mirror.
he doesn't have a lot of money, but he will definitely give you at least some of it whenever you get your nails done and he will get so excited when you come back to get a new set. ( in a modern!au, i can definitely see him getting his nails done with you, but he won't get anything more that a simple manicure because he still needs to play guitar ofc )
okay but i love the hc that eddie loves hyper-feminine girlies so a bimbo gf would be his literal dream, he's just so fascinated by it. definitely the type to call you "doll" religiously because you remind him of a barbie doll ( that goes for however you look btw, it's just all the pinks and skirts that make him go "barbie." )
he's definitely not going to judge you for being a bit of an airhead at times, he rlly can't talk about having dumb moments. that being said, if there's anything that he's good at that you struggle with, this man is giving up any hours of his day to help you with it. also yells at people who give you shit if something just doesn't click for you even if he can't rlly fight for shit.
okay onto the actual request. let's just say there's another dnd club in hawkins that's yours, and eddie left early to pick you up because the hellfire campaign wrapped sooner than he thought.
he already knew you were a dungeon master, which he thought was super fucking cool btw, but you would scream at the highest frequency he's ever heard if he tried to peak into your notes for your party. so when he walked into the hawkin's rec centre ( do they have one? idk but that's where most clubs are on where i live- ) he can't exactly say he was prepared to see you with a hot pink hood covering half your face, staring the party members down as they debated their next move.
knowing the importance of atmosphere, eddie stayed by the door, silently observing with a proud smirk. he but his tongue to hold back a laugh when you cackled loudly, thoroughly entertained by the party's distress.
chrissy, an undercover nerd, as you so kindly dubbed her, who had found herself incredibly intrigued by the game once you showed her a random campaign you'd planned out hit your arm playfully when the campaign finally finished. "i hate you when you go all dm." she complained, pulling you into a quick hug. "but i love you normally, be safe on the way home." she pulled away from you with a swift kiss on the cheek and a bright smile. "eddie's waiting for you, by the way! hi, eddie."
he waved back at her "hi, chrissy." he made his way towards you with a smile. "quite the change in personality there, hm doll?" he asked, arms looping around your waist. "can't say i pictured you coming up with a campaign like that."
"what, like it's hard?" your fingers toyed with the hair on the nape of his neck.
"did you just quote elle woods?"
"she's my lord and saviour, of course i did."

WHAT IF THAT WAS ALL TO LEAD US TO PREDATHOS ACTUALLY BEING A FINE DUDE??????
Okay but all caps is hurting my eyes so lets discuss:
- we haven’t seen predathos and presumably they’re either asleep or in some sort of dormant state and have been since nearly the beginning of recorded history so there is no record of their form, true power, personality, etc. all we know is they (presumably, but lets be real yes they did) ate two gods
- Predathos was said to create “twisted life” but so far what we’ve seen from the life on Ruidius is just… *different* life. Red and spindly and alien, but not necessarily bad. Yes we’ve seen some reilorans siding with ludinus in the fight near the lava a few episodes back, but we also know that reliorans called by imogen have to do what she says so how do we actually know these ones were working on their own volition/weren’t misguided like bor’dor was?
- Quite a few times in this campaign we’ve been shown the theme that bad things are often not evil or malicious, (and evil things can be useful shoutout to Teven Klask). As mentioned earlier and by many people throughout this campaign: these PCs are easily the villain NPCs in any other dnd campaign
- When they went to the shattered teeth Matt said “You are uncertain who is who, but you get the sense that many innocent creatures have met their end in this land violently, not because of malice, not because of murderous intent, but because some things have to eat and some things have to be eaten.” And ever since I heard him say that I keep wondering if THAT is gonna be who predathos is! Because gods may meet their end to predathos violently, not because of malice, but because *some things have to eat and some things need to be eaten*
- And NOW with the introduction of ludi’s old harness and seeing just how powerful and dangerous it is I absolutely think that Ludinus has been working on a new one since he left molaesmyr and my *theory* is that he’s only trying to release predathos so he can suck in his power (maybe he’ll be the one controlling imogen’s powers then and YIKE) and have the ability to devour the gods/become one himself.
- Imagine how JUICY and INTERESTING it’d be if the hell’s realize that predathos is actually not a bad being, but a being who has been treated badly and then BAMB LUDINUS COMES IN WITH AN UPDATED HARNESS AND SUCKS HIS POWERS INTO HIMSELF?? HOW BATSHIT WOULD THAT BE?????? LIKE??????? COME ON
(This is all speculation I hate when I speculate on this hellsite and someone claims I’m trying to pretend I have a crystal ball that can see into the future with 100% certainty: I’m trying to have fun calm down)

And this takes us to the present. The revenge plan.
The sun has just come up and there are four of them camping in Steve’s car, sharing thermoses full of hot beverages of choice. (Steve brought one full of hot cocoa and it's the crowd’s favorite.)
“Eddie is not an early riser, we’re wasting time,” Lucas complains while observing the trailer with his binoculars. 
“I think his uncle’s gonna wake him up for us,” Robin assures him. And like clockwork, Wayne Munson’s truck comes into view, almost knocking down one of their sculptures. The man steps out, takes a look at the dozen snowmen surrounding his trailer, and disappears inside. 
About fifteen minutes later, the curtains in one of the windows move. Steve’s buzzing in his seat. Or maybe just shivering. He reaches into his pocket for a tissue to wipe his runny nose.
“There’s a message!”
“Well, read it!”
“Nice move, Stevie,” Lucas reads the paper that appeared in the window. “Can’t play with you tho, I’m sick. Sad face.”
“Did he draw a sad face or…?”
“Of course, he drew it!”
Steve yanks the binoculars from Lucas to see for himself. The papers disappeared but Eddie took their place in the window, wrapped in a blanket. There’s a scarf around his neck and his nose is red. He looks bad.
“Damn. He really is sick.”
“Full offense but you look like shit, too.”
“Can it, Mayfield.”
He steps out and walks up to the trailer. Eddie finally spots him and he perks up and waves at him.
“Hi!” 
Even through the window, Steve can hear how croaky his voice is.
“Guess there goes your next campaign.”
Eddie laughs weakly, it turns into a cough.
“Guess so.”
“You started it,” he reminds him.
“I know. Sorry.”
“Why?” Steve frowns at him. Eddie shrugs.
“Seemed like a fun idea.”
“Imagine how much fun you could be having playing DnD now.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Eddie waves his hand. “But. You know.” He shrugs again.
“No, I don’t know.” He shakes his head, frowning again.
“You don’t play DnD.”
He taps against the glass nervously and Steve collects himself quickly.
“We can find something that doesn’t end with you in bed.”
Eddie’s eyes sparkle with mischief and Steve immediately realizes the double meaning in his words.
“Okay, shut up.”
He turns around and leaves quickly. The inside of his car is surprisingly warm and he shivers from head to toe.
“Well, I’m leaving before I catch whatever this is,” Max eyes him before escaping the car. She stops once outside. “Lucas, you coming?”
The boy scrambles behind her.
“Let’s get you home,” Robin squeezes his arm. 
He takes one last glance at Eddie’s trailer and nods.

It’s all misery from there. He makes camp in the living room because that’s where the tv is and he needs some entertainment while sitting on his ass and coughing. Robin takes stock of his medicine cabinet and whatever else he may need while housebound. She forces him to take his temperature. He’s prissy about it because it would make the sickness real, but it’s barely above average.
“Good. Let’s keep it that way.” Robin pats him on the head while inspecting the thermometer. “Where’s your walkie?”
“There’s no need-”
“Little shitheads need to know they’re on their own. Or rather on their parent’s mercy.”
He nods.
“It should be on my desk.”
She’s gone for a while which makes him assume he’s excluded from the conversation. There’s probably a lot of yelling happening from the kids and Robin’s saving him the headache, bless her heart. She comes back eventually, walkie in hand. 
“I’ll leave it nearby in case you need anything, but I told them not to bother you, that you’ll contact them if you need anything.”
“Thanks,” he smiles. “You’re the best.”
“I know,” she smiles back. “Dustin isn’t happy, of course, but his mom said they’ll come with some soup later. Max said, and I quote “serves them well.”
“She's not wrong,” he mutters.
“Will and Lucas said they’re sorry. Will said Mike’s sorry too.”
Steve snorts.
“Course he did. What did Eddie say?”
“Nothing,” she shrugs. “Either he was sleeping or too sick to speak up.”
“Huh.” He’s weirdly disappointed about that.
“Anyway, I gotta go to work now because my coworker called in sick.” She pats his knee as she stands up.
“Uh, I’m sorry?”
She shakes her head.
“You’ll pay me back when I come down with whatever I just caught from you. I’ll come over tomorrow with some movies. don’t forget Dustin’s coming later today!”
He groans.
“Right, of course.”
“Yeah, not jealous about that, buddy.” She pats his head. His hair is ruined enough that he doesn’t protest. “Walkie if you need anything, do not leave the house, keep yourself warm. Toodles!”
“See you, Rob.”
Later he has to listen to Dustin yelling at him from the other side of the room (“I’m not getting any closer to your germs, Steve!”). Claudia, the wonderful mom she is, doesn’t have such reservations and hands him the soup she brought after heating it.
“Dusty made us make rounds to all your friends to gather a care package for you.”
Steve makes a surprised sound over his cup.
“Being sick is so boring, we thought it could help!” Dustin adds, still yelling from afar. But the anger seems to have seeped out of him. “We’re going to Eddie’s next, his care package is cooler.”
“Dustin!”
Steve laughs.
“He’s probably right, Ms. Claudia, I don’t think our interests overlap as much as with Eddie.”
“Well, you’re gonna get educated because we do not have boring jock shit for you.”
“Dustin!”
“What?! It’s the truth!”
Steve snorts so hard, he needs a tissue.
After they leave, he digs into the care package like it’s a Christmas morning. Everything has little post-it notes with get-well wishes and signed who it’s from. From Robin, he got promised medication restock and some hard candy for his throat. Will gave him a copy of Hobbit and a tape which upon opening, turned out to have a small joint hidden inside, courtesy of Jonathan. El lent him a Wonder Woman comic. Dustin gave him a Batman comic and a handwritten guide titled “D&D for dummies”, that actually made him chuckle. At the bottom, probably because Dustin was ashamed of his friend, was an issue of Sports Illustrated with a note “Read the Magic Johnson interview!” and below that, a girly-looking magazine, dryly signed “from Erica.” He chuckled to himself and opened it first. Inside was another Post-it note that read “page 17”. Intrigued, he flips the pages to find it.
On page seventeen, there is a segment titled “Flirting or bullying?” and one of the questions/stories is highlighted with a pink marker. Steve gets to reading.
“Dear TM team,
My friend, S, is being followed by this boy who keeps starting snowball fights. He’s waiting for S’s shift to end, sitting in his van outside the shop to do so. It’s turning into a full-blown snowball war by this point. My other friend thinks they are pulling pigtails, but I just think they are dumb. So, is it flirting or boys being idiots? -E”
Steve drops the magazine and goes into the kitchen to have a refill of his soup.

When Robin comes in the next day, the magazine still lies where he left it, taunting him. His heart stutters when she picks it up with a laugh.
“I guess under all her snark Erica is just another girl, huh?”
Oh, how wrong she was.
He licked his dry lips before speaking up, barely audible and fucking terrified.
“Open it.”
Surprised, her eyes snap at him, but something in his tone makes her comply without a word. He pretends to busy himself studying the romcoms she brought.
“Huh,” he hears among the rustle of the pages. He looks up, too tempted to watch her face while she reads.
“What’s so fucking funny?” he asks, watching her lips quirk.
“Nothing!” she squeaks. “I’m surprised she did that.”
“I’m not. It’s Erica.”
“True,” she giggles, closing the magazine. He frowns at her.
“What did they say?”
“You didn’t read it?”
He taps his fingers against his mug.
“I chickened out,” he admits.
“Why don’t you ask Eddie yourself?”
“Robin,” he whines.
“Steve,” she whines back. She scoots closer and takes the mug out of his hand to lace their fingers together. “Listen, I rejected you and now we’re friends. You’re friends with Nancy too. You can let him down gently, it’s not the end of the world.”
“No, Robin…” He sighs, squeezing her hand. “I think I was, um… pulling his pigtails back.”
“Oh shit.”
“Oh shit,” he nods.
They look into each other’s eyes, giddy and nervous, before bursting into giggles. Their eyes fall back on the magazine. 
“Hey.”
“Hm?”
“Didn’t Eddie get a care package from them too?”
“Oh shit.”

“Dude I can’t stay here forever, pick up the phone!”
“Your yelling is really not helping me.”
“Oh, so you’d rather do it by yourself?”
He winces.
“No? Yes? I don’t know!”
She groans and he’s pretty sure she’s about to strangle him when the phone calls. They both jump and stare at it. Robin eyes him but he’s not moving a muscle so she groans and picks it up in the middle of the third ring.
“Yes?” She sounds calm and collected. “Oh, hi Eddie!” She smiles like an imp, staring straight into Steve’s soul. “You sound like shit.”
He makes a sound of protest, but she puts a hand up to stop him.
“Oh, you just got your voice back? And you’re calling Steve first thing? How sweet!” She’s making kissy faces at him and he’s about to commit murder. “Yes, he’s awake, I’ll get him.” She holds out the receiver. “For you.”
“Fucking obviously,” he murmurs, snatching it from her. She snickers.
“I’ll be in the living room,” she says and struts away, but he keeps an eye on her just in case she decides to eavesdrop. 
“Steve?” 
He does sound terrible.
“It’s me, hi.”
“Hi, um. Did you, by any chance, maybe, perhaps, get a care package from the kids?”
Steve’s insides twist.
“Yes?”
“From Erica too?”
“Yes.”
“A magazine?”
“Page seventeen?”
Eddie breathes hard into the receiver. 
“Yes, that.”
The silence hangs between them. His clogged sinuses make it hard to formulate thoughts.
“What did they say?”
“What?”
“Was it flirting or bullying?” he clarifies, fumbling with the cord. 
“You didn’t read it?”
“No.” He tries to find an explanation that doesn't sound bad. “Wanted to hear it from you.”
Eddie takes a ragged breath, it turns into a coughing fit. Steve frowns.
“You should go back to bed, we can talk about it later.”
“No!” Eddie protests straight away. Coughs a bit more. “I just… Yes, they say it was flirting,” he spits out.
Steve suddenly feels worse.
“But they were wrong,” he pushes for clarification.
Eddie sounded like they were.
“I don’t know,” he admits instead. Steve frowns.
“What do you mean you don’t know? You either flirt or-”
“I never thought about it, okay?” Eddie interrupts him. “I always assumed I’m into chicks but I’d definitely not flirt with one like that.”
It feels like a punch in the gut and Steve knows his own answer. Robin’s right, he’s survived rejection and unrequited feelings and got life-long friendships out of it. He can bear one more.
“Well, I’m pretty sure it was flirting on my part.”
Eddie starts coughing again.
“It’s okay if you weren’t i just wanted to be clear,” he adds as soon as the coughing subdues. “I never thought about it before either.”
“No, listen. Steve. Stevie.”
Steve’s stomach makes a backflip against his will.
“Yes?”
“I’m still thinking about it, okay? Just, the fever isn’t helping. Like, I want to say yes, but I’d rather say it when I’m not sick and half out of it, you know?”
Steve barks out a laugh, relieved and hopeful.
“Sure, makes sense. I’ll still be here.”
Waiting, like a dumbass.
“Cool. I’ll call you tomorrow, I’m out of stamina for today.”
“Sure, uh, sleep well.”
“You too, sweetheart.”
Steve’s too stunned by the pet name to put the phone away, so they just breathe into each other's ears, startled. But he won’t let Eddie one-up him like that.
“Goodnight, handsome.”
Eddie made a choked sound before ending the call. Steve puts the phone down and walks back into the living room, where Robin is waiting for him, the TV forgotten.
“Well? What did he say?” she asks before he can sit down.
“That he’s still thinking about it.”
“Nooooo!”
“But he did call me a sweetheart.”
“Oh?”
“I guess neither of us realized we were flirting.”
“Steve!” She starts slapping his arm.
“What? What?!”
“I hate you so much! You were each other’s gay awakening? How is that fair?!”
She’s pouting when he grasps her hands to stop the assault.
“Well, we can plot a snowball war against Vickie next,” he offers.
“Are you kidding me?! She’d hate it!”
Steve imagined a gaggle of kids ganging against the poor little redhead.
“Yeah, you’re probably right. I guess men are a simpler species.”
“You are so lucky I love you.”

DnD AGSZC. You know you have HCs. Sharing is caring.
oh well, twist my arm why don'tcha!
So to start, Sephiroth is one of THOSE players. You know the ones: makes broken characters that seemingly can do anything by level five; consistently has a rather depressing backstory that drives their character to be a dick to everyone for the sake of "roleplay". one of THOSE PLAYERS (see also: the Chocobro... or as Salty has pointed out to me, the Genebro.)
Likes to dable with his Characters. Though his favorite remains his Dragonborn Oathbraker Paladin, named Azriel who turned on the party in one paticular campaign to join forces with a powerful female Dragonborn Litch... I don't thing I really need to tell you why.
Angeals a pain because he wants to play "correctly". he's not competative but heis a rulebook warrior. Cloud has banned the Player's handbook from the table for this very reason. Angeal complains about "house rules" and the "rule of fun" all the time, even while activly enjoing the game. He's a pain.
He usually plays a Paladine and his drive for adventure is always "to avenge/ make his father proud. he once pushed the boat out at Clouds behest and broke his oath, and it didn't go... Well. to put it lightly everyone at the table cried (esspecially Zack) and Angeal had to make a new character.
Genesis is predictable to the point of hilarity. always a Bard or a Warlock. Always a Tiefling. Always gender ambiguous. if the games not starting withthe party finding Gen drunk and bemoning exsistence in a tavern then are they really playing DnD? He will always be playing a College of Tragedy bard (Thank you Matthew Mercer.) He's never pushed the boat out once in all the time they've played and if he can squeeze a loveless Quote in where he can he's gunna do it.
Genesis is however the table flirt and the Horny player. he's rolling to seduce the dragon. Cloud has Vowed never to let them play Curse of Strahd... EVER.
Zack is never predictable in his Character build. In the beginning he went similar to Angeal except a human young fighter with dreams of being a hero, But now he likes to dabble with his classes sometimes and mess around in terms of race. Cloud likes Zacks approach to DnD cause it keeps him on his toes.
His Favorite build thus far is his Halfling Rough/Monk multiclass he based off of a little girl he met in Wutai (you know who.).
When Kunsels Available to play he plays as a College of Lore Bard. He knows everything and Cloud is pretty sure He's been spying on his notes between games.
They are all suprisingly big on Roleplay which is fine by cloud cause it makes his job more fun. He's made them cry multiple times with his storylines, and His NPC voices are unparalelled. concidering he's not expressive in his day to day, he comes alive as DM.
There has been some massive in jokes that make other people question if they are sane or not. things like all the boys mimicing Clouds voice yelling "DON'T FUCK THE DRAGON!" everytime they gointo monster dens. Or looking Angeal up and Down and saying "I don't have the hit points to clinb you like a tree," .
Genesis begs Cloud to make a LOVELESS based Campaign... Cloud doesn't want to admit he already has one, hes just afraid Gen will pick holes in it.
Zack is a bastard for casting Fireball when he doesn't have the hit points to survive his own spell. the one time he played a wizard he cast it, did 39 points of damage and only JUST survived by one singular hit point.
Kunsel has the magic touch where dice are concerned. He constantly rolls consistently high rolls.
Cloud is absoloutly sure Sephiroth uses loaded dice. but he can't prove it.
Angeal always seems to end up getting attacked by mimics. doesn'tmatter how many times it happens, he always has too much trust in everyday objects.

After that night, you did your best to distance yourself from Eddie. He had a girlfriend now, after all. He didn’t need to be spending so much time with you anyways. You tried to see the best of the situation. Without Eddie, you had more time for yourself. Less chaos and more peace. Sure, you missed him talking about his campaigns and watching him struggle to write new songs. Sure, you missed his daily Lord of the Rings quotes and the way he liked to doodle on your arms when he was supposed to be studying instead.
Fuck. You really missed Eddie.
But it’s fine. This is fine. You finally get to really explore who you are and what you like as a person, a person without Eddie Munson attached to your side all the time.

Eddie was scribbling into his notebook more campaign ideas. A blunt rested beside him on the coffee table. Julie sat beside Eddie with a bored expression on her face.
“Baby, why don’t we go out? Take a break from that dumb game and let’s go party or something.”
Eddie scoffed, “Dumb game? Julie, Dungeons and Dragons isn’t dumb! It’s life! It’s adventure and problem solving and-“
“Okay, okay! No need to have a nerd freak out on me!” She got up from her couch and headed to the kitchen.
It’s been five months of them dating. At first everything was all fine and dandy. Eddie believed Julie to be the person he always dreamed of. She was a metalhead, hated the idea of conforming to society, loved to just chill out and let life take its course. But then he started realizing that maybe she wasn’t all who he expected her to be. She didn’t understand his love for DND and his club. She called him “a bit of a loser” for having a club dedicated to a “board game”. She always wanted him to play her some songs or try to write music. He was starting to feel like she was using him for something.
Eddie also realized how little he’s seen you since that big gig of his. He’d called you up a few times, inviting you out, and you’ve denied him every time. He’d show up at the diner to see you, only for one of your coworkers to take care of his orders instead. It was driving him crazy! You were his best friend and he’s felt like he hasn’t really been around you in a long time.
He sighs and closes his notebook. He pulls on his leather jacket and gathers his things, “I’m heading out,” he mumbled to Julie.
“Seriously?” She asked with a scoff.
“Can we please not do this?” He asked, “I forgot my Uncle Wayne asked me to take care of some shit, so I need to do that before he gets home.”
“Whatever,” Julie mumbled, plopping back on the couch and taking Eddie’s blunt.
Eddie saw himself out and got into his car. He left Julie’s apartment, heading back to his. He drove past Family Video to see you getting out of your car and heading inside the shop. He immediately stopped and swerved back around into the parking lot.
He entered the shop and stopped in the doorway to see you smiling and laughing Steve Harrington. What. The. Fuck.
His eyes narrowed as Steve grinned, leaning closer to you to murmur something in your ear. You laughed again and, for some reason, Eddie saw red, “What the fuck is going on?”
You jumped back when you heard Eddie’s voice. You cleared your throat and smiled at Steve, “Well thanks for holding this for me. I’ll see you around. Tell Robin I said ‘hi’!”
Steve waved at you, “See ya!”
Eddie watched as you walked passed him, “Faerie-“
“I have somewhere to be, Eddie.”
He continues to follow you to your car, “So you and Harrington are all buddy-buddy now?”
“Perhaps. Why does it matter?”
“Thought you didn’t have friends besides me.”
That made you stop and glare at him, “Fuck you, Eddie,” you murmured before unlocking your car door.
“Wait! That-I didn’t mean it like that! Faerie, please! Listen to me!” He called for you as you slammed the door shut and sped out of the parking lot.
Eddie doesn’t know how things went so terribly wrong between you two.

THANK YOU!!!! The characters and titles are all references to the PCs from my D&D campaign and I made the dust jackets fit actual books, I keep them in my bedroom! The flaps have the book synopses and my author info and headshot, and the backs are all covered in fake reviews from friends, family, my professors, and a few cheeky ones I wrote and credited to like, Neil Gaiman and Oprah 😆 All five books have different quotes!

Plus, I intended for this to be the Collector’s Edition of the series (since it’s a NYT #1 Bestseller, after all 😝) so I measured everything out so the spines put together reveal an image of the pantheon of gods in my dnd world! (And the symbol of the BBEG…)

I just finished a Court of Fey and Flowers by @dimension20official, it was absolutely amazing, hands down the best AP I have ever seen, or imagine I might see.

As someone that is strongly anti-D&D 5E and Anti Wizards of the Coast, it took me a long time to give dimension 20 a chance, and I will strongly suggest that anyone in that same position give it a shot.
I am gonna talk about it below the cut here, cause this will likely be long, this will be things I both liked and didn't like.
So i'm gonna talk abit about my feelings and experience with games and APs, because we're all different, we all like different things in a TV Show and by extension those variable preferences would also expand to APs. So I want to give you a little bit of information about where I stand as I explain my thoughts. Sorry if this gets very SEO Recipe lmao.
If you don't care about all that, skip to the next bold line, however if you are gonna comment or argue or whatever, at least read the context first and then probably don't do that.
I've been gaming for 30+ years, I started very early, and i've played definately dozens, probably hundreds of different games. D&D doesnt even rank in that list, I didn't like it much as a kid, when i grew up and it was 3/3,5 I hated both it and pathfinder with a passion. I played 5E for a bit but its lackluster and very poor design led to a game of boring mechanical options and choices that quickly grew old. And if I was gonna play a narrative game, i wouldn't be playing D&D in the first place. 4E is the only edition of D&D I've actively enjoyed.
I was an immense Critter during Campaign 1 and partway through Campaign 2. Like... "my wife and I have Critical Role quotes engraved on our wedding bands" critters.
But I quickly fell away from both Critters and Critical Role, by and large Critters is the worst fandom ive been apart of (and I was a SuperWhoLock back in the day) and the CR cast talks a lot of nice ideals and backs them up with absolutely nothing but lip service. I am now, tbh, somewhat uncomfortable when I see any of them on my timeline.
Dimension 20 is the first AP my wife and I have tried to watch since CR (we find most APs to be unwatchtable in most situations, just our own preference), My wife was curious about seeing Brendan as a DM after watching him on Game Changer, so we watched Mice and Murder (it was fun, and good, but has NOTHING on aCoFaF), and then on a suggestion moved to watch aCoFaF).
Last piece of the puzzle, WotC is a fucking nightmare company that has harbored some of the worst pieces of trash imaginable (though tbf that is not unique to them, its a major "large/old ttrpg company issue". And I quite frankly would love to never have to hear or see about anything wotc ever does ever again, preferably because they burned down and everything they ever made goes with them (this sadly means I would lose 4E but sacrifices must be made).
Things I like about a Court of Fey and Flowers
The first thing I love about it, is its a very role play heavy AP, and it centers on matters of Political fey intrigue, and that is done so masterfully by every single player and by the GM. (I absolutely avoided D20 because of the DnD/WOTC connection, but I in retrospect absolutely understand the whole "Season of Aabria" that was going around now).
The characters were thrilling, dramatic, sneaky, nuanced and hilarious, and the storyline was gorgeous and beautifully made, allowing the players to make their own messes and their own relationships and romances. So much romances.
I absolutely loved that I didn't have to see dnd 5e be played most of the time. This is something, and one of the only somethings, you'll see me talk about in the "don't like" section, so it is strangely enough both. The system was changed and mostly ignored that I almost never had to see dnd played, the AP is so heavily social and rp and during the state of the AP only had two very very short combats that were more priority on the social implications of the combats than the combat itself. Overall it could have used any system and done what they did, but mostly I didn't have to see 5E played and that made it pretty solid, despite "being 5E".
I also love Brennan Lee Mulligan's Captain KP Hob, a very good bab and the first and only Bugbear PC ive seen in an AP (and I love me some Bugbear)
Thing's I didn't like about a Court of Fey and Flowers
This is gonna stay light, because really there wasn't much. The only thing really is that the system, while ostensibly "5E" the system was so lightly applied, used or stuck to that the game could have used almost literally any other system to better affect and I absolutely hate that they still gave 5E and WOTC some sort of props/bandwidth by barely using the system but still selling it as DnD.
