waiiiiit tell me more about my man Chopin 🧐🧐
oh absolutely i will!! in this article from 2010, the author talks about how scholars have frequently erased and covered up evidence for chopin being queer, including homoerotic letters. the article is in spanish but I can write a translation if you're interested in reading it and don't read spanish! the abstract is in english and contains some really interesting thoughts. this is a super common story in music history - in the late 90s a SUPER controversial article came out suggesting that schubert might be queer and (straight) musicologists lost their Shit. i can talk about the nuances of that if interested (it would turn into a long infodump about queer scholarship that i would be super happy to go on <3). i'm having a hard time finding potentially accessible and scholarly sources, but if you want more info i can go on an academic journals deep dive and collect some pdfs :)) in conclusion i will present this little selection from the chopin wikipedia page without comment :)

[Image description: text that reads:
Chopin was friendly with members of Warsaw's young artistic and intellectual world, including Fontana, Józef Bohdan Zaleski, and Stefan Witwicki. Chopin's final Conservatory report (July 1829) read: "Chopin F., third-year student, exceptional talent, musical genius."[21] In 1829 the artist Ambroży Mieroszewski executed a set of portraits of Chopin family members, including the first known portrait of the composer.
Letters from Chopin to Woyciechowski in the period 1829–30 (when Chopin was about twenty) contain apparent homoerotic references to dreams and to offered embraces.
Now I am going to wash myself. Please do not embrace me as I have not washed yet. And you? Even if I were to anoint myself with fragrant oils from Byzantium, you would not embrace me – not unless forced to by magnetism. But there are forces in Nature! Today you will dream that you are embracing me! You have to pay for the nightmare you caused me last night.
— Frédéric Chopin to Tytus Woyciechowski (4.9.1830)

The voice of the sea is seductive; never ceasing, whispering, clamoring, murmuring, inviting the soul to wander for a spell in abysses of solitude; to lose itself in mazes of inward contemplation. the voice of the seas speaks to the soul. The touch of the sea is sensuous, enfolding the body in its soft, close embrace.

I tell my piano the things I would have once told you.
Fryderyk Chopin, in a letter to Tytus Woyciechowski on October 3, 1829
secret context:
This is probably the most famous Chopin quote of them all, to the point that it's on the verge of cliche. The notion that this teenager (he's 19 here) with his extraordinary musical destiny would be confiding in his piano as if to a friend is super compelling. BUT there's another reason why I find it satisfying, and for that I give you the extended passage, Polish and all:
Nie uwierzysz, jak dla mnie teraz Warszawa smutna; gdyby nie to, że familia mi uprzyjemnia, to bym nie wysiedział. – A jak to przykro nie mieć pójść do kogo rano, podzielić z nim smutku, radości; jak to niegodziwie, kiedy coś cięży, a nie ma gdzie złożyć. Wiesz, do czego ta aluzja. Fortepianowi gadam to, co bym tobie był nieraz powiedział.
You wouldn't believe how depressing Warsaw is to me now; if it weren't for my family cheering me up, I wouldn't be able to stand it. -- How miserable it is not to have someone to go to in the morning, to share with him the sadness, the joy; how wicked it is when something weighs on you, and you have nowhere to lay it down. You know to what I allude. I tell my piano the things I would have once told you.
Yes go ahead and enjoy, it's lovely.
the thing is, historians have interpreted this as: poor Chopin is feeling stifled in Warsaw after his big trip abroad (he'd been to Vienna recently) :'( now he can't wait to leave again and go to a proper european city like Paris or Vienna where he'll finally be able to make real art for real :'( :'(
but the thing is, the only thing Chopin finds "depressing" about Warsaw is specifically that his bff/maybe secret boyfriend, to whom he is writing this letter, is not in it anymore. so while a 100 years worth of historians are trying hard to west-ify him, our boy is over here just telling a man he misses him. hero.

Things I've seen (and sometimes participated) in the childemains-adjacent part of genshin fandom so far.
Quoting Greek tragedies extensively
People discussing technical details of sex with giant butterflies for several days
Discussions about The Symbolism Of Whales
Debates about what constituents an orphic myth
Four people looking at a 200 questions checklist for dissociation symptoms (one day I'll fill it)
Repeated complaints about the limitations of modern psychiatric diagnoses

LOOK. i get the winnix hype ok. i get it i truly do. but ALSO. also. it's just not for me. i read one winnix fic that WRECKED me forever, but honestly, my thoughts on winnix and shipping and relationships is Complicated and Long-Winding forever. they still are a big part of my frontal lobe tho i am not gonna lie
4 - baberoe - you called me babe
the fuckin OP of Relationships That I Am Unable to sufficiently define. i love them dearly, but the Baberoe Shipping Journey and Subsequent Massacre of Babe Heffron's Characterization and its slow recovery was honestly insane and had a permanent impact on my psyche
3 - speirton - hell, it was you, first sergeant
they r just.... they're soooo..... well. i haven't written them since the bonnie and clyde au because every speirton feeling i have is wrapped up in that in some way, but basically, Devotion and bringing out both the freakiness and love in one another is Big for me and they r a vibe. and they must have insane chemistry bc one actor is insane catholic and the other's a fucking wahlburg
2 - webgott - i can't choose a quote for them everything that came out of their mouths was batshit insane
they're in love. they're chasing each other. they're leading each other. they've broken up 3712847 times and gotten back together 9823413 times. they're emotional dykes they're insane they have all the limited edition star trek plates and all of kate chopins books idk how else to describe it
1 - luztoye - hell of an idea, joe

Today was a much better day! Also, I was very excited because for the first time since I first learned it a year or two ago, completing the square finally made sense to me. I have no idea how I never understood it until now. All I had to do was divide the x factor by 2 then square it and add that square to both sides of the equation. It's so simple! In other words, I had a lot of fun working on Geometry today because I was thrilled that it finally made sense.
In other news, I accidentally wrote my Biology assignment in my World History notebook. I am not sure how since my Biology notebook is larger than my World History notebook, but it happened. It was three full pages worth of writing, so that is not getting copied over. When I realized what I did, I laughed it off because I was shocked and amused that I had done that.
Tasks Completed:
Geometry - Reviewed completing the square + learned about general equations of circles + practice + honors work
Lit and Comp II - Reviewed Unit 19 Vocabulary + read chapter 29 of Emma by Jane Austen + reviewed figurative language terms + sentence types quiz (non-graded) + read through my next project (due next Tuesday)

What I’m Grateful for Today:
I am grateful to live somewhere where I have access to clean water, fresh, local foods, and low air pollution.

19 and 20
19. Adam Zamoyski’s “Chopin: Prince of the Romantics” And I have the signed copy! 😚 I absolutely adore Chopin because I play the piano. The book is so well written, sometimes I forget that I’m reading about an actual real person. But some descriptions, the very gritty and depressing parts of his life, are so raw and emotionalllll gurlll I cried! 😭😭
Tumblr media
20. Uhmmmmmmm. I have sooo many. Prepare! 🤭💕
Tumblr media
The one and only, Johann Sebastian Bach! He’s incredibly talented like omggggg how does he even come up with all these amazing pieces of music?!? 😨😳 His genius is unmatched. There will never be another composer like Bach! I have dozens of portraits and stickers of him and even a t-shirt. Omggggg it’s so embarrassing 🙈
Tumblr media
Glenn Gould, the quirky autistic Canadian Bach wizard! He’s so handsome even well into his older years. And he’s soooo eccentric, like you should read about some of his quirks, it’s really out there💀👀 Also, did I mention how talented he is?! He gets criticised a lot for his weird playing style and humming (sometimes singing) during his performances. I love it tho 😘 it really adds something to the records
Tumblr media
Louis👏Nicolas👏Davout👏 How can you not like this absolute beast of a man?! Sure, he was a bit rough with his soldiers, but I like a leader who doesn’t fuck around! We need more men like him! I feel for him though. He really was the least liked out of all Napoleon’s marshals, I relate to that because my fam doesn’t like me even though I’m a girl boss 👹 Poor old Davout was just doing his best! Here’s a quote that he wrote to Berthier —
“I cannot help admitting to myself that often my exactingness and my severity alienate good officers from me even before they barely have time to assess my true intentions."
Ommmgggg 😭😢
Tumblr media
Ahemmm…. As a student I kinda have a love-hate relationship with this guy. I’ve suffered so many sleepless nights because of him 👩‍💻📚📚📚 But without this guy we’d probably still have our children working 16 hours for absolutely nothing (we still do actually, it’s heartbreaking). His works literally had soooo much impact on history, it’s unbelievable.
Tumblr media
And of course, how can we forget our hero!?! I wanna be like him soooo much it aches 😫 My family genuinely don’t understand my obsession with this man, like how could they not?!! His image is literally on the wiki page for the “Great Man Theory” — that individuals with certain traits are able to affect the course of history rather than it being due to some larger force or something I dunno it’s an IR/history thing I’m studying 😢

After Chopin died in 1849, whether as a tribute or coincidentally, Liszt spent some time writing music in Chopin-esque genres, such as etudes and ballades, transcribed Chopin’s Polish songs on piano (”Six Chants Polonais”), and even wrote polonaises (”Polonaise mélancolique”), mazurkas (”mazurka brillante”) and of course nocturnes.
See, the nocturnes are very interesting, because it’s the genre Chopin popularized and became the most well known for. Liszt published a set of three nocturnes known as “Liebestraüme” in 1850, a year after Chopin’s death. They were originally conceived as lieder - songs with lyrics based on poems. I’d very much like to quote some fragments of these poems for you, as a little trivia.
The first nocturne is based on “Hohe Liebe” (“Exalted Love”) by Ludwig Uhland. (Full text)
Drunk, rest ye all in the arms of romance, Yon fruits of life do thee beckon and call; Though on me was cast but a single glance, Far richer still am I than all.
The second is based on “Seliger Tod” (“Blessed Death”) by Ludwig Uhman
I was dead from love's bliss; I lay buried in her arms; I was wakened by her kisses; I saw heaven in her eyes
And the last one is based on “O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst” (“Love as long as you can!”) by Ferdinand Freiligrath. Full text can be read on Wikipedia. It’s certainly the most interesting of the three as it seems to mirror Liszt and Chopin’s situation.
O love as long as love you can, O love as long as love you may, The time will come, the time will come When you will stand at the grave and mourn! Be sure that your heart burns, And holds and keeps love As long as another heart beats warmly With its love for you And if someone bares his soul to you Love him back as best you can Give his every hour joy, Let him pass none in sorrow!
Later on this poem talks about forgiveness, which in a way seems fitting knowing that Chopin and Liszt’s friendship subsided in the 1840s, though of course it might have been coincidental and the reasons for turning these particular poems into nocturnes only Liszt will ever know.

Psycho Analysis: Judge Claude Frollo
Tumblr media
(WARNING! This analysis contains SPOILERS!)
The Disney Renaissance was home to some of Disney’s greatest villains. Scar, Ursula, Gaston, Jafar… The films from 1989 to 1999 all redefined what it meant to be an animated antagonist. But while there were many great villains during that time, one in particular managed to be regarded as one of the darkest and most terrifying villains in the entire Disney Animated Canon: Claude Frollo, the sinister minist—er, judge who serves as the main villain of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
The man is heavily entwined with the more complex themes of the movie as well as a lot more cold and vicious than one might expect from the company that brought you Mickey Mouse, but what exactly is it that makes him such a great villain? Well, read on, because I try my best to explain it.
Motivation/Goals: Frollo is a horrible, bigoted prie—er, judge who wants nothing more than to totally eradicate all of the filthy Romani from Paris in the name of the Lord. Unfortunately, he ends up falling hard for one of them, Esmeralda, after watching her do a saucy dance routine. From there, Frollo is consumed by a single-minded lust for the woman that drives his actions, with his conflicted feelings on the matter leading him to blame her for giving him sinful thoughts and determining that all of Paris needs to burn because he is… well… he’s a
Tumblr media
I get a lot of mileage out of that gif.
Performance: Tony Jay was picked specifically for this due to his memorable bit role in Beauty and the Beast, and boy does he manage to prove that that was the best decision Disney could have made. His naturally magnificent voice lends Frollo the class, dignity, and intimidation it deserves. One could even say that Dr. Lipschitz is off his shits for this one.
Final Fate: As he attempts to slice through a gargoyle and sent Quasimodo and Esmeralda tumbling to their dooms, he loses his footing and ends up clinging to his gargoyle for dear life. Said gargoyle comes alive, breaks off, and sends Frollo hurtling into a river of fire below, which ends up being a pretty spot on interpretation of his attempted one-liner: “And he shall smite the wicked and plunge them into the fiery pit!” With this in mind, it’s pretty easy to interpret what happened to him as karmic divine intervention—Whether you think it’s God Himself, the spirit of Notre Dame, or something else entirely enacting it upon him is up to interpretation, and ultimately unimportant. What matters is he didn’t go to heaven where the angels fly; he fell in a lake of fire and fried. And we definitely won’t see him again on the 4th of July.
Best Scene: It is really not even a contest here. “Hellfire” is without a doubt the greatest Disney villain song ever made (and maybe even the best villain song period) and is a prime showcase of Frollo’s internal struggles and motivations, so of course it is his best scene.
youtube
Best Quote: When finally he has Esmeralda at his mercy near the film’s end, he echoes a line from “Hellfire” and says ”Choose me or your pyre.” It’s such an unsettling line that really highlights how deep into his lustful entitlement Frollo has fallen, and what’s more these words echo the real life sentiments of certain disturbed individuals. It’s a truly timeless villain quote in that regard;there are men who would rather a woman die than not be with them, unfortunately, and Frollo is the poster child for that brand of manchild.
Final Thoughts & Score: At the start of the movie, Chopin asks, “Who is the monster, and who is the man?” in regards to Quasimodo and Frollo. While the answer is fairly obvious even just after the opening number—Frollo attempts infanticide after murdering a woman, after all—the way the movie goes about expounding in the two characters in a way that explores this question is deeply fascinating.
Frollo is an incel to put even Gaston to shame. Almost immediately after seeing Esmeralda for the first time, he begins to obsessively lust for her, but his bigotry and zealotry leads him to condemn her because he’s unable to get a grip on his emotions. He ends up being the latter extreme of the Madonna-Whore Complex, contrasting Quasimodo as the opposite extreme. It should come as no shock that Quasi picked up some negative traits from the guy who raised him, but thanks to being a supremely nice guy his incel traits manifest as venerating a caricatured ideal of Esmeralda rather than condemning. There’s a reason the end of “Heaven’s Light” segues right into the start of “Hellfire;” both men have toxic views of Esmeralda, objectifying her in opposite yet equal ways.
It is how they deal with these toxic mindsets that ultimately resolved the question posited at the start, as well as cementing Frollo as one of the darkest villains Disney has ever done. Quasimodo, while not happy at being rejected, still cares for Esmeralda and does all he can to help her, culminating in him saving her from being burned at the stake. His experiences lead to him accepting Esmeralda and Phoebus as couple gracefully, shedding away his toxic mindset. This ends up reaffirming his humanity, earning him the adoration of Paris and the end to the loneliness he’d experienced for so long; he is the man.
Frollo, on the other hand, deals with rejection by going on a racist, genocidal rampage against the Romani, setting the city ablaze simply because his perverse affections aren’t reciprocated. This culminates with him offering Esmeralda either death or to give in to his advances, and when rejected conclusively he doubles down on his murderous rampage, which ultimately leads to his doom. His inability to see Esmeralda as a complex human being instead of an object to lust after, an inability brought on by his own bigoted views, is what ultimately peeled away his humanity and revealed him as he truly was: A monster.
And Frollo is a monster in a very resonant, chilling way. In this day and age, we see people like Frollo all the time. They’re in our schools, seething when the girl they like rejects them for another; they’re on the internet, spewing misogynistic bile because they can’t get dates; they’re in our churches, preaching intolerance to their mass while desperately trying to bury their own sins; and they’re in our government, using their power to oppress and demoralize those with less power than them. “Choose me or your pyre” is the sort of attitude you see in the incels who end up on the news for committing or planning to commit atrocities.
And this is what makes it so good and cathartic to see him fall. We want people like him in real life to face the consequences of their actions, and we can only wish that said consequences are falling into a river of molten lava. It ends up being all the sweeter if you interpret his fall as being an act of God, as mentioned above.
Tony Jay apparently described his role as Frollo as his “bid for immortality,” and it’s safe to say he succeeded. He pretty much singlehandedly elevated the film he’s in so far above its flaws that it’s astounding and proved to the Disney Renaissance, all while giving us a villain song more incredible than any seen before or since. Thank God I’m doing fractions now, because this man deserves a 10.5/10. He’s not quite an 11 because I wouldn’t call Frollo one of the most important and influential villains in the vein of, say, Darth Vader, Count Orlok, or Fu Manchu, but he’s still a cut above the rest when it comes to villains. He’s easily the second most incredible antagonist Disney has ever made, and the only flaw he has is that you don’t get to personally beat his ass in Dream Drop Distance, which is especially bad since he straight up racially profiles Sora before immediately calling him a slur.

F1 - Second Star to the Right by @\gufettogrigio - Surely one of the most beautiful brocedes/princess cake fics ever. This is kind of weird to say but it Not to expose myself but I specifically loved it because of how raw and accurate the depiction of mental illness is. There are specific quotes in this that I think about all the fucking time and I've reread it at least half a dozen times over the past three months. That says a lot about me tbh.
Merlin - Pianos are made for falling by fishwrites - Devastating. Haunting. One cannot simply move on from this. Lowkey scared to reread it because it would wreck me.
The Man from U.N.C.L.E. - A steel hand inside a velvet glove/丝绒铁腕 by Huoshao - It's a shame not everyone can read chinese because it's the best post-canon Napollya longfic hands down. It's super famous amongst Chinese fans of western media–I've come across people who watched the movie because they wanted to read the fic.
Enhypen - Bestie Vibes Only by @\drivestraight. Fun fact: this is how I discovered Val, her F1 fics were very much a pleasant surprise for me. Genius writing that managed to pull off the cliche college au by having the most insanely messy intra-group dynamics. Beautifully insightful descriptions of love, especially at the end.
Inception - Autonomic by radishface (+ the sequel How to use a lifejacket) - As an Inception rarepair truther (cobb/arthur... don't judge I have my reasons) I owe my life to the more open-minded livejournal authors tbh. A lot of good shit out there but I'm particularly fond of radishface. One of the first fics I downloaded to my hard drive for archival.
(additional shoutout to the garden of eden by relationshipcrimes. I haven't consumed the source material (persona 5) so I can't judge the characterisation but this genuinely is one of the most horrific + devastating things I've ever read. pandi why would you rec this to me)
Top 5 artists I'd like to see live (excluding mcr & fob–they're my top priority but I've already seen them):
草东没有派对/No Party for Cao Dong - One of my favourite bands, their latest album is insane in terms of musicality, even if you don't understan Chinese it's still really good!! It's my dream to see them live.
Seong-Jin Cho - My favourite classical pianist <333 I'd sell a lung to see him play Chopin
The Killers - Idk singing along to their hits would cure me
Mãneskin - They would be so fun to see live oh my godddddd
Enhypen - I NEED to see nishimura riki's dance live I need toooooo
Top 5 nico pics - impossible fucking challenge considering the sheer number I've saved... I really can't choose but here are 5 I'm currently enjoying. Shoutout to all the really cunty pre-f1/early williams era long-hair nico pics <333 couldn't choose between them so none of those made the cut

Shadow High OCs Bio 6: Niamh Frost
Tumblr media
COLOUR: Frost blue
YEAR: Second
GENDER: Female
FOCUS: Creative Writing
STYLE: Dreamy. Ethereal. Chill.
QUOTE: “Snow and ice and all things nice.”
BIO: Having spent the first fourteen years of her life with her grandparents in the Irish countryside, Niamh was raised on all sorts of spooky awesome folktales about crafty fairies, shape-shifting animals, and greedy pumpkin men—all of which continue to inspire her. She’s a creative writing focus whose genres of choice are fantasy and horror, and the supernatural tales in her award-winning short stories and classic poems are based on the type of stories she grew up hearing at bedtime. At Shadow High, Niamh is known as a huge gossip and a bit of a trickster, fond of blowing school urban legends out of proportion (and making up a few of her own) with her twisted tale-telling skills. Even if it freaks some people out, she genuinely means no harm, and just likes to share as many of her ideas as possible and contribute to the culture of Shadow High in her own special way. After all, who doesn’t love a good story?
OTHER:
-She’s sixteen and was born in Limerick, Ireland, but spent most of her life living with her grandparents in County Mayo.
-She has several classes with Scarlett Rose, and while they’re not super close, they’re happy to be each other’s beta readers.
-She’s a huge fan of moody classical music (think Chopin), and she’s been playing the cello for two years and the piano for six.
-Her (unrequited) crush is Eliza McFee.
-Her outfit inspo comes from nu goth and hippie goth subcultures, with flowing sleeves and skirts and huge hats.
-She definitely still writes creepypastas, but only posts the ones she deems “not quite good enough” to go in a published short story collection. She posts them anonymously under the handle cailleach_of_beara.
-Apart from short stories, Niamh also loves writing classical poetry. Her most well-known work is a series of poems called “Lady Winter”, based on her experiences travelling from the wide-open countryside of Ireland to the bustling crowded cities of the west coast US.
-She has a strong belief in ghosts, spirits, and the paranormal, and the way she sees it, ghosts gain more power from human fear and above all, their notoriety (i.e. the more people spread legends and rumours about spirits, the more powerful they become).

Arcane Incorrect Quotes:
Tumblr media
“But, um... I'm so ill... and I have been for such a long time, and my body is such a great disappointment to me, that I've already said goodbye to it, I'm... not really in it any more, I'm just... happier floating about in music. And if I should come back... inside this miserable collection of bones, then I... am afraid that it would probably collapse altogether. Forgive me. I'm ashamed.”
-Chopin (Impromptu 1991)
