UMMMMM WHAT 😭💔💔
UNHAPPY MARRIAGE??? YOU MEAN HER UNHAPPY RELATIONSHIP WITH 🤢DUNCAN🤢???
AND THE FACT THAT IT SAYS “they can sacrifice for those they love” HAS ME THINKING, WHAT IF IN TGG SHE HAS TO SACRIFICE HERSELF FOR HER FAMILY?? NOT SO HEROICALLY I THINK BUT I MEAN WHAT IF SHE GIVES SOMETHING OF HER OWN UP TO PROTECT HER FAMILY??
i am not ready for the grandest game to come out because then that means we’re probably gonna have more sad savannah scenes 💔 (and her finding out about what really happened to her dad)

Saw Nina Menkes' Queen of Diamonds (1991) last night, the only one in the theater. The last shot stuck with me so I had to do a quick rendition from memory. There were some very stunning shots of light. The valley in darkness, the saturation of the mountains, the bleakness of the sky here was one of them.
Been doing color studies from film screenshots as warmups... out of my comfort zone stuff. These two are from Frank Hebenlotter's Frankenhooker (1990).
Currently at the "fighting the materials" stage but I'll figure out the right technique to use as I go along. Maybe start with a digital notan study, then a values study, then colors? That breaks my brain less, so I haven't wanted to go that direction. Really trying to push comfort zone and block in shapes wholly in color with a brush. We'll see how this continues!
Picking colors from sight (not the eyedropper tool) and mixing those colors to blend has already been very insightful. It's been a long time since I used acrylics. The end products here aren't valuable in themselves, just the process so far.

Wild Card Queen of Diamonds IPA (Picked up at Oddbins in London). A 3 of 4. Light tropical fruit in the nose, and a relatively simple, clean body. Slightly thicker than I was expecting, and nicely balanced with a touch more bitterness than I was expecting in the finish.

Celebrating Nina Menkes!
“A distinct and idiosyncratic figure in American cinema, Ms. Menkes... has also remained somewhat overlooked, an outsider both on the indie film scene and in avant-garde circles. Her work is sometimes called experimental, but unlike most experimental filmmakers she makes narrative features."

Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power (2022)
"The film was never meant to present a balanced view. The film is a polemic that is balancing 120 years of the male gaze on our backs. I’m not trying to be balanced. That’s the first thing I want to say. The second thing I want to say is that the film is purposely simple. The diagrams we present are simple on purpose. We want you to be able to apply a basic diagram to each of the different and complicated situations that unfold in the film."

Dissolution (2010)
"Thematically somber but visually luminous, “Dissolution,” the remarkable new work from the Israeli-American filmmaker Nina Menkes, explores a soul stained by blood and smothered by loneliness."

Phantom Love (2007)
'"Phantom Love" is intentionally designed and structured in an open manner, welcoming the viewer to various interpretations. One of them — implied by the title — is that much of the rest of the film's images and sounds are the wandering thoughts Lulu experiences during sex.'

Queen of Diamonds (1991)
"The latest jewel in the crown of independent filmmaker Nina Menkes, QUEEN OF DIAMONDS may become for America in the 90’s what JEANNE DIELMAN was for Europe in the 70’s—a cult classic using a rigorous visual composition to penetrate the innermost recesses of the soul."
