SPOILERS!!! REFERENCES AND EASTER EGGS IN F&C ep. 6: THE WINTER KING

This one didn't post before for some reason.

These fellas are iceclopses as seen in Prisoners of Love, and in the pilot episode before that.

This musical section is animated by Smallbu, who previously animated the story sections of Ketchup and most of Beyond the Grotto.

Cake selfcest moments volume 2.

Ice Marceline raises some questions! I've seen a lot of people theorise that this means Marcy is dead but I don't think that's necessarily true. Presumably she was pretty pissed off with the Winter King when he turned her ex into an insane maniac and lost some of himself in the process. What is a mystery is how the Winter King got his hands on her bass guitar, which she is very attached to.

The shopkeeper at the candy store is Lord Monochromicorn, who is mute just like in his original appearance. Also that vending machine is obviously modelled after the Gumball Guardians.

There's a brand of candy called Heartstopper. That's the name of a famous real-life series of British gay highschool romance graphic novels, which seems appropriate for this very slice-of-life Gumlee (Garylee?) subplot.

The humanised Lemongrabs are called the Lemoncarbs, which is what Tree Trunks mistakenly called them in the episode Mystery Dungeon.

The Winter King says it would be unethical to make an ice Betty, which is a bit hypocritical considering he has an ice Marcy in his basement.

This is humanised Bee Princess. They don't look very genderswapped but maybe he's just femme.

The Candy Queen's eyes match the eyes of Bubblegum's yak in the episode Bonnibel Bubblegum, which was itself a reference to Tank Girl.

Both songs in this episode were written by Pat McHale, who has been with the show since the pilot episode.

Fionna exclaims "This is what was missing!" while slicing up the banana guards, which is what Finn exclaimed for slightly more wholesome reasons in the episode What Was Missing.

Gary's innate desire to create the Candy Kingdom is manifesting itself in his baking. It was very dark seeing his cute biscuits paralleled with the real candy people being brutalised by Fionna and Cake.

It's still not clear why things keep getting de-magicked when Fionna and Cake interact with them. Perhaps it's just a passive ability they have because they come from a non-magic universe, but it doesn't happen to everything they touch.

Bubblegum seems to have learned how to use her candy powers in this universe despite the fact she was cursed a hundred years ago and presumably hasn't had the chance to learn that she's an elemental. Perhaps she learned it from her time being the Candy Queen.

When Marshall Lee asks for more details about Gary's Candy Kingdom, he begins describing the plot of Slumber Party Panic, the first episode of Adventure Time.

According to production notes, baby world was created by BMO's wish. The monkey's paw twist was that he lost his personhood and became a baby monitor.

This episode's dream features an ice fortress shaped like the crown.

Gabriel capturing Cat inside Shelter, not to mention paralysed by Venom...and then Kagami barricading him in Shelter yet again...

It's all just echoes of the bars on his windows, the rules, the cage in Sandboy, the akumatisations, the cage on the film set in Queen Banana, the mind control....

I know Kagami locked Marinette in a shell too, but this just keeps happening to Adrien :(

I can’t BELIEVE for the nights and days of life is over, I was starting to think that novel would last forever.

I hope you all are ready for the fact that it’s not over here on my blog, as my 5-5 ass is not done with it yet. In that respect, here are the chapter ten notes. No spoilers in the comments for me and any people who haven’t read yet, or are for some godforsaken reason, reading along with me.

And @mochalottie u are a queen and my favorite, I’m so sorry for taking so so long to read your work and being so bad at responding to your dms, I’m at the stage in adulting where every text from anyone seems like a monumental task lol. I’m trying to manage time better and respond better. It doesn’t help that I work in a high school so it blocks tumblr!!

Onto the for the nights and days of life chapter 10 notes! Happy Halloween all!

-The way I feel like my own children are growing up too fast when I hear that Spider and Neteyam aren’t sitting with Mo’at in the infirmary much anymore.

-Ur fighting my Jake and Mo’at spend an insane amount of time gossiping headcanon. Ur simply spitting on it. Just think about it, just pICTURE it. Mo’at’s grinding up a paste and Jake sneaks in like “…Have your heard about what happened with Moe and Ninat?” and Mo’at goes “JAKE SULI I would never talk behind someone’s back. Tell me everything.”

-Hey, Neytiri being like unable to acknowledge Paz as Spider’s mom? Banger. It really gets to me. She’s like well fuck off that’s my kid all while doubting herself. But Mo’at's right baby Spider was Neytiri’s number one fan from day one, he was literally always a momma’s boy.

-Also because you mentioned the kids taking an afternoon nap, I wanted to take a moment to just highlight how hellish that year or so where Neteyam, Kiri, and Spider were done with naps and Lo’ak still needed them was. You know his ass threw the bIGGEST tantrum every time it was time for a nap and everyone else was still playing. He was enRAGED because no one has fomo like Lo’ak. The kid was feral, crying overtired tears simply insisting that he is absolutely not tired and does nOT NEED A NAP.

-Spider being in the sleeping pile is one of the things that makes my heart grow three sizes every time I read about it. But you made it 20 times worse by adding in that by himself he spreads out for safety but he feels safe in the pile, like I’ll kill myself.

-I literally can prove Spider always asks for banana fruit and I’m starting to become convinced it’s the only fruit he knows.

-Lol Norm and Max sitting on Earth absolutley fIGHTING over who has to tell Jake things are going BadTM.

-Lol I just literally kNEW that Neteyam wanted to make Spider a present, and yet instead his gift to him was even more of a complex.

-YOU CANNOT TEASE TARSEM LOVE STORY TO ME. ALSO I’M NOW ASSUMING HE’S GAY THAT SCENE READ GAY.

-This is what both Jake and I thought of when Neytiri told him to keep his secrets:

SHE QUOTED THAT MOVIE ALMOST BAR FOR BAR MAN, IF I WAS JAKE THAT WOULD’VE SENT MEEEE. When I was younger I used to have to share a bed with my cousin on family vacations, and I’m telling you bitch is possessed. She sleep walks and sleep talks, and sleep assaults me in my sleep. But one time she fucking quoted The Princess Bride and the next morning when I told her I loved that movie, she told me she’s never seen it. I have never felt more fear for my life. Picture Jake struggling to explain the plot of Lord of the Rings, his ass has seen it, his twin was a nerd.

-Jake as soon as his child needs comfort: Oh fuck, I’M the only one here!

-Spider, like 7: I won’t be able to mate dad. Jake: I have to go. I’m not ready for this.

-HUMANS ARE BACK, time for things to get a little fucking sad. I know I’m ALMOST twenty chapters behind and you guys are already in it, but I’m just getting started baybeeee.

-Also I love Spider calling his parents Ma and Da, your Irishness has crept in.

I’m not sure if you answered this before but can you give us a timeline for the Corrupted Holders AU like how long has Gabriel been Monarch, how long were the temp heroes holders before Felix stole the Miraculous, how long did they all fight Gabriel as Hawk Moth and Shadow Moth also I was curious are you planning on sticking to the canon powers or are you planning on changing them at all like I was curious how Ziggy and Orikko’s powers would all play out specifically

Marinette and Adrien become heroes at the age of 13, Season 1 is one year, and Akuma attacks happen every week or month.

Season 2 is two years, Marinette turns 14, and Adrien turns 15, Kagami and Luka enter the picture but there is no romance yet. Marinette and Adrien start hanging out, Marinette starts to lose hope.

Season 3 is two years, and Marinette is now 16 and Adrien is now 17, Marinette slowly loses feelings for Adrien and begins having romantic feelings for Chat Noir as she starts to hang out with him more, Chat Blanc happens, and Marinette becomes Guardian. Adrien starts dating Kagami, Marinette starts dating Luka.

Season 4 is one year, Marinette struggles with her Guardianship and the consequences of Chat Blanc, and Adrien feels left out and alone. Luka and Marinette date for four months, and Kagami and Adrien date for three.

Season 4: Rewritten: Events that happen

Lies- Kagami dumps Adrien, Adrien is now single and sad, and Marinette is still dating Luka

Gang of Secrets-The girls are worried about Marinette due to the lack of sleep and her missing on dates with Luka. Marinette does not reveal her identity to Alya, she instead talks to Chat Noir about the pressure and he offers to help, Chat Noir becomes Co-Guardian(He has certain kwami babysitting days)

Mr.Pigeon 72- Ladybug and Chat Noir are trying to decipher the grimoire and make some potions. Marinette finds out that Kagami broke up with Adrien and goes to support her friend and try to get them together. Chat Noir figures out the grimoire and both heroes get upgrades. Adrien hangs out with Marinette.

Psycomedian- Adrien finds Marinette's humor funny, Ladynoir bonding, Marinette's nightmares about Chat Blanc begin.

Furious Fu- Su Han appears Marinette feels insecure about her being Guardian, Chat Noir shuts Su Han down and reminds him that times have changed and he hasn't helped at all with Shadowmoth. Su Han goes after Fu. Marinette proves herself to Su Han but Chat Noir keeps an eye on him. Su Han doesn't like Chat Noir but grows fond of Marinette. Marinette's duties as Guardian grew due to Su Han and his teachings.

Truth- Marinette breaks up with Luka after four months together due to Shadowmoth's more persistent attacks and Su Han's teachings and giving Marinette more duties.

Sole Crusher- Two weeks later Zoe meets Marinette. After Chloe's betrayal, Chloe is more silent and lashes out more, suddenly Audrey reappears after years of being gone and brings a half-daughter with her. Chloe feels replaced and lashes out. Zoe meets the friend group. Chloe feels replaced and starts distancing herself from others. Sabrina starts gaining freedom.

Queen Banana- Chloe is lashing out, Zoe is making friends, and Adrien is somewhat happy to spend time with Marinette and doesn't know why he is happy that she broke up with Luka. Zoe becomes Vesperia temporarily. Marinette has her first chosen as Guardian and has a Bee in her order. After seeing Vesperia, Chloe feels replaced entirely and breaks. Chloe ends her friendship with Sabrina. Zoe starts worrying about her half-sister.

Gabriel Agreste- Felix comes back to Paris to steal the ring, Felix is an asshole to Adrien, and Marinette sneaks in under suspicion that Gabriel Agreste might be Shadowmoth. Felix finds out that Gabriel is Shadowmoth and starts to take an interest in the Miraculouses and in Ladybug. Marinette holds onto her theory that Gabriel is Shadowmoth. Gabriels allies make deals with Gabriel about the Miraculouses.

Mega Leech- Polymouses debut

Guiltrip- Pigella’s debut, Ladybug talks to Chat Noir about his feelings and the two support each other

Crocoduel- Purple Tigress’s debut, Marinette talks to Luka, Adrien grows a bit jealous when seeing Luka and Marinette together. Chat Noir treats Purple Tigress like a sister.

Sentibubbler- Shadowmoth targets Alya believing that she has the Fox Miraculous, Pegabug and Chat Noir save the day. Alya is assigned the Fox Miraculous in secret and has to report to Chat Noir by the end of everyday, Rena Furative debuts. Shadowmoth starts targeting the previous holders.

Glaciator 2- Paris is obsessed with Ladynoir pestering Ladybug and Chat Noir. Both hero’s are annoyed and a bit upset that it can’t be true as they both have feelings for each other but Ladybug is traumatized by Chat Blanc and denies it harshly. Adrien is upset at the thought that Ladybug will never love him, Marinette sees Adrien in the park and goes to check up on him. Marichat talk to each other about feelings. Marinette is falling more in love with Chat Noir but is heartbroken as she remembers Chat Blanc. Adriens feelings are confused.

Rocketear- Nino fears Alya is cheating on him with Chat Noir, Nino tells his fears to Adrien who does his best to support his friend. Alya lies to Nino. Rocketear beats Chat Noir up, Marinette is horrified and scared for her partners safety. Ladybug tells Rena Furative to talk to Nino. On patrol Carapace talks to Chat Noir, Chat Noir reassures Nino that he is not in love with Rena Rouge and he would never do that to his turtle friend. Caracpace says he will help Chat Noir win Ladybug over.(Bros for life, fuck you zag my boy Nino would never). Nino is in on the Rena Furative secret with Ladybug and Chat Noir. Caracpace becomes the protector of secrets.

Wishmaker- Luka finds out Ladybug and Chat Noirs secret Identities, he does not tell them. He talks with Sass after battle, Sass tells Luka that Adrien and Marinette are soulmates. Luka is respectful but heartbroken. The snake begins to know all.

Dearest Family- Tikki gets hangry, Marinette learns more about the kwamis and their history. Marinette gets a glimpse of Tikki’s real form and makes sure Tikki never goes hangry again.

Ephemeral- Su Han manipulates Marinette into revealing Chat Noirs identity, Adrienette start to date after reveal, Gabriel akumatizes his son. Luka stops the wish and learns of the consequences of what happens when Creation and Destruction reveal identities when there is still a threat, Marinette is murdered by Gabriel, Adrien is forced to watch the love of his life die. Bunnyx separates the timeline and resets everything. Marinette wakes up with ‘neck pain’.

Penalteam- The class play soccer, Marinette creates the Miraculous team, Sabrina proves herself to earn the Dog Miraculous by sticking up to Chloe who is still lashing out. Rooster Bold, Minotaurax, Caprikid, and Miss Hound debut. The Miraculous Team is created and official.

Risk- After half a year, the Miraculous Team is official in Paris and are constantly joining Ladybug and Chat Noir on patrol. Chat Noir still feels sad about the team but has warmed up to them and treats them like his family. Risk happens, Adrien and Felix switch places. Felix pretends to be Adrien, Ladybug is affected by Risk and old feelings begin to rise. Adrien is conflicted with how his father treats him.

Strikeback- Felix finds the fake Peacock Miraculous, Ladybug and Chat Noir argue, Pennybug finds Felix and believing he is Adrien gives him the Dog Miraculous, Felix is amused and interested in Ladybug. Felix uses Fetch on Ladybugs yo-yo. Strikeback is defeated, Felix makes a deal with Gabriel. Ladybug realizes that Felix was pretending to be Adrien. Marinette’s trust and feeling of safety is shattered. Felix trades all the Miraculouses for the Peacock. Ladybug breaks down in Adriens bathroom sobbing over the lost Miraculouses. Adrien listens to his partners heartbreaking cries. Monarch is born. Chat Noir supports Ladybug and Marinette’s feeling for Chat Noir starts to show and Chat Noir realizes he can’t stop thinking about Marinette.

Season 5 rewritten:

Evolution- Ladynoir steal the rabbit Miraculous back from Monarch, Bunnyx debut, Alix begins her duty as time Guardian. Marinette is depressed after having the Miraculouses stolen from her, Marinette says goodbye to Fluff and is all alone. Adrien can’t stop thinking about Marinette. Marinette cries in a very empty room.

Multiplication- Adrien admits that he is in love with Marinette but Marinette seems to want nothing to do with Adrien, Marinette’s hopes of getting the Miraculouses back one by one are shattered when Ms. Tsurgi reveals no Mouse Miraculous on her. Marinette becomes depressed and begins rejecting everyone of Adriens attempts to kiss her.

Destruction- Monarch attempts to find Ladybug through the kwamis, Monarch goes on a wild goose chase, Monarch is cataclysmed. Gabriel melts the Miraculouses down creating the Miraculous rings, the magic in the Miraculouses begin to malfunction leaving the Miraculouses vulnerable. Adrien stops modeling, Marinette supports him. The alliance rings are published. Monarchs reign begins

Jubilation: Marinette is unhappy with how Gabriel uses Adriens image and how he treats his son, Marinette saves Socqueline, Dark Owl traps Ladybug and Chat Noir in the gift using the Pig Miraculouses power, Ladynoir get married and live the lives they dreamed of having. Ladybug realizes its a dream and Chat Noir breaks over realizing its not real. Ladynoir kiss and accept that they can’t be with each other till Monarch is defeated. Chat Noir almost cataclysms Dark Owl. Ladynoir lose hope.

Determination- Adrien goes to the wax museum with Kagami who promised to help him win Marinette over, Marinette doesn’t want to be left alone with Adrien and calls Luka. Adrien grows jealous seeing Luka with Marinette. Kagami and Luka meet. Adrien flirts with an uncomfortable Marinette. Marinette realizes she’s over Adrien but Adrien is only falling harder.

Passion- Lady Noire is thirsty for Misterbug that’s it.

Reunion- Marinette meets Joan of Arc who tells her story of her time as Ladybug, Joan tells Marinette how heavy their duty is and Marinette realizes she can’t be in a relationship until her duty as Ladybug is over only then can she be free. Adrien tries flirting with Marinette. Paris begins blaming Ladybug for losing the Miraculouses, Marinettte’s insecurities start coming back.

Monarchs reign continues for 8 years.

Totk spoilers and speculation ramblings as I've just completed a main quest and am emotionally wrecked from it.

Zelda after her mom died when she was so young and her father Rhoam crushed her under the weight of his expectations and responsibilities finally found a mother and father figure who loved and cared about her and wanted the best for her. Sonia and Rauru did what Rhoam never could, they supported Zelda in what she wanted. And when Zelda gushed about Link, that look in Sonia's eyes and both her and Rauru's faces conveyed the intrigue and concern and doting love of two parents hearing about their daughter's clear crush on her best friend. Sonia saw Zelda as her own daughter and held so much love and warmth for her.

And then it was all too soon snatched away from them when Sonia was murdered by Ganondorf (what the fuck was that face he made tho like seriously wtf body horror alert). Zelda and Rauru had to bury the first queen of Hyrule and the first mother figure Zelda really had after the Calamity a century prior (because I absolutely think Urbosa also was a mother figure to Zelda too). The amount of grief and strife and trauma Zelda continuously goes through, the number of times she bonds with someone and they're killed or otherwise taken away from her, poor girl is Not Okay.

And Link, seeing these memories of Zelda and discovering her Fate in the distant past and having to hold that information close. He so far hasn't told anyone the truth of where Zelda went - who the fuck is going to believe him if he tells them the princess turned into a Dragon? Sure most people are willing to believe some wild claims coming from Link knowing who he is and what he deals with - Paya is quick to believe the claim that the Zelda seen across Hyrule giving strange orders is a demon king imposter. But the princess being a dragon feels like it may be a bit too far fetched even from Link.

The emotional pain Link must endure every time there's a lead on Zelda to find it's for naught, or worse, that it was a trap to try and kill him via the Yiga. The Yiga having the audacity to impersonate Zelda to get at Link must be so incredibly nerve-wracking for Link because all he wants is to find Zelda and bring her to safety and these bastards are using it against him. I wouldn't blame Link for turning evil in the way of not caring if the world burns if it means he can get Zelda back. I know the game implies the Yiga don't die and always poof away without actually dying but I know in my heart Link would kill the Yiga without mercy especially if they made the decision to impersonate Zelda or use her as bait. The Yiga are people, choosing to sew destruction, and the reformed Sheikah man in Kakariko is proof they have the capacity to be reformed, but I doubt that's at all on Link's agenda when he sees a Yiga blade master poof out of a disguise as Zelda and laughs at Link.

Master Kohga and the Yiga clan may largely be comic relief but their actions are so dark when you look beyond the slapstick and banana jokes.

And throughout it all, the real Zelda is robbed of her agency for the sake of her responsibility once again. She's so selfless that she literally gave up her sense of self and identity to save the world she knew. I'm sobbing. So is she, perpetually crying dragon.

The Banana Chronicles

Wee the first chapter(well, prologue) of my twst fanfic! Hope you enjoy! (This contains spoilers, so @simping-myjob go read the first 5 chapters of book 7 before reading 🔫🔫🔫🔫😠/j)

Prologue

To Lilian, this had become normal.

Her surroundings were pitch black and she was stepping on a puddle of water that spread apparently to no end. Ever since she arrived to Twisted Wonderland, those kinds of dreams came up often.

As usual, she followed the creature that eerily ressembled Grim until the decor changed. This time, she was in what looked like a medieval castle made of monochrome chalk-like material.

It was decorated for a party, probably a baby shower since all the attention was on a tiny bed over which three old ladies hovered. Lilian tried to get closer, but she was stopped by a large green burst of fire erupting from the center of the large room.

It then faded to reveal a dignified horned lady cloaked in black with a face that was familiar to Lilian, though she couldn't put her finger on it yet. The woman stroked her scepter with a malicious glint in her eye.

"What a wonderful party... With everyone invited. Well, except one, I'm afraid." She spoke snarkily like a snake. She was barely hiding the fact she was hostile.

"It's because you're not wanted here! Spat the old lady dressed in blue, the youngest of the three. -Not...Wanted...? Oh dear, how vexing."

The horned woman stepped towards the craddle. The old ladies tried to stop her, but she easily pushed them away with magic. She put her finger near the baby's cheek, who grabbed it and started laughing.

"I too, shall bestow a gift upon this child."

She took her finger back and glared towards the couple sitting on the two thrones.

"She will grow with grace and kindness, adored by everyone around her... -That's a lovely gift, the Queen intervened to ease the atmosphere. -...I'm not finished. When the bells of her sixteenth birthday will ring across the kingdom, she will prick her finger on a fiddle and fall into a deep sleep of which she will never wake.

Sounds of horrified screams filled the room as the Queen fainted into the King's arms. With an angry shout, he ordered guards to go after the horned woman, who disappeared into the same green flames of which she came.

The scene then began to disintegrate into powder and the ground beneath Lilian's feet split open. As "Grim's" featureless figure watched over her from above, the girl fell with a scream.

It's time to wake up.

WIP Questions Tag

I wasn't actually tagged by anyone, but @owlsandwich opened it up to everybody so I'm giving this a try! Open tag, but also no pressure tags to @somethingclevermahogony , @queen-of-the-weenies and @sarandipitywrites !

We're gonna do my main current WIP, God-Touched, and also a couple I've tabled for a bit due to stress, which are called Gods of Steel, and Nico after the name of the MC, respectively. I copy pasted the questions and I may have missed one or two.

What has been your biggest struggle with your wip?

God-Touched: This is more of an overall writing struggle for me, but underwriting/being too concise. I tend to make unnecessary time skips when outlining and not add enough descriptive passages.

Gods of Steel: The world building. I usually enjoy complex world building, but I may have bitten off more than I can chew with this project. I'm taking it slow and building one aspect of it at a time as I'm motivated to do the necessary research, so fingers crossed that works out.

Nico: This one's kinda stupid, but keeping myself from imagining my protagonist as Nico di Angelo. She's completely different in appearance, mannerisms, etc, but I'm a rabid PJO fan and that was my first association with the name.

If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?

God-Touched: Definitely something by Imagine Dragons, probably Natural.

Gods of Steel: Probably some kind of epic orchestral thing, I haven't found a specific track yet.

Nico: Song Of Women by the HU and Lzzy Hale. Going purely off of sound and vibes.

What other pieces of media do you think would share a fan base for your story?

God-Touched: Supernatural, Firefly, the King Arthur reincarnated as a space lesbian book (Once and Future) and the book Spellhacker by MK England.

Gods of Steel: This is gonna sound really presumptuous, but I'm trying to make it similar to Dune and the Na'vi Avatar movies.

Nico: Honestly, Tamora Pierce, even though my story is more sci-fi than fantasy. Also slightly the Divergent movie (haven't read the book in years), in that the MC slowly realizes just how much of a dystopia she's actually living in, even though she started out compliant.

What was the first part of your wip that you created?

God-Touched: The general concept of Christian mythology put into a queer science fantasy context.

Gods of Steel: The setting, (humanity's original non-Earth home), and some of its history.

Nico: The idea for the relationship arc between the two main characters. It was the first time I'd ever wanted to write romance, and it was an interesting challenge to come up with how that would play out.

Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!

God-Touched: This is a major spoiler, but the main gang ends up adopting an iridescent rainbow baby space dragon. She looks majestic, but is actually a huge derpy goof. She's heavily based on Banana, my little sister's big ginger cat who is not exactly the sharpest crayon in the box

Gods of Steel: The main villains on this story are cyborgs, but some are cyborg animals rather than people. They started out as normal robots, but then got this virus that made them grow flesh, skin and other organic parts, but many of the animal-like ones still have working blades or guns as part of their bodies that they use when hunting humans for food.

Nico: The fauna of the setting for this one is very ice age influenced, the main character has a war mammoth that she's raised from a calf to be her mount and companion.

What part of your wip are you working on rn?

God-Touched: First draft of the first two books, if all goes well it's gonna be a five book series.

Gods of Steel: World Building.

Nico: In my first stage of outlining.

How do your characters get around? (ex: trains, horses, cars, dragons, etc.)

God-Touched: spaceships and hover bikes

Gods of Steel: spaceships, then on foot after all their tech gets infected by the cyborgs.

Nico: Mammoth-back riding.

What are your hopes for your wip?

This is the same for all of them so I'll just do one answer: A devoted fandom that uses my books as inspiration to create their own awesome content. Fanart, fanfic, animatics, those character analysis YouTube videos, anything like that.

Jonathan Bailey interview with the Evening Standard (2021)

There are worse places to conduct an interview than a park, and at least it’s only drizzling.

The only problem is that people won’t leave Jonathan Bailey alone. Which is to be expected, of course: he’s in Bridgerton, the most-watched original Netflix series in its history, viewed on 82 million accounts in a month since it dropped on Christmas Day. Wait. Did I say people? I meant dogs. They snaffle at his heels and rub against his legs while the humans remain impervious. This is because, devoid of his mutton chops and tailcoat, the 32-year-old actor looks a world away from Viscount Anthony Bridgerton, brother of Daphne; lover of Sienna; friend and foe of Simon, Duke of Hastings.

Today he’s dressed in a nylon jacket and sporting very different hair. ‘Bit of a spoiler for season two — I’ve had a light perm,’ he smiles.

And even if Bailey had spent the past two months in full regency costume, fame would have eluded him until lockdown eased and the usual signifiers — being hassled in restaurants, endless selfie requests — were back on the table. Until then it lies in wait, preserved in aspic.

Having spent lockdown thus far on the East Sussex coast staying home like the rest of us, Bailey admits the disconnect is confusing. ‘I feel like I’m being gaslit on a global scale,’ he laughs. ‘Even today, just meeting and talking to actual people who have seen the show feels weird. To me and all the British cast, it feels like Nasa. Netflix launched this spaceship, and you get launched into space. It’s a brilliantly traumatic thing to experience. The launch only happens once, and then it’s about tethering yourself and working it out. I think that might take a while.

‘The isolation of lockdown has been incredibly hard for everyone, but the isolation of feeling like you can’t inhabit the experience that other people are experiencing around you, while being locked down and not being able to see your friends…’ he tails off. ‘Presumably all it will take to shake it off is a big dinner, or even just having a few pints and going out.’

With a slew of TV parts under his belt (Broadchurch, Crashing, Chewing Gum, W1A) and an Olivier award for his role as Jamie in Company (2018), Bailey isn’t exactly an ingénue. But Bridgerton is one of those rare TV programmes that has bestowed fame on a global scale.

Produced by Shonda Rhimes and adapted from the historical novels of Julia Quinn, Netflix’s genre-busting costume drama reached the top 10 in 189 countries, thanks to a sharp script, lavish costumes and racially diverse cast that saw actors of colour inhabit the highest echelons of 19th-century society in a way that had never been seen on screen before. That this high society is presided over by a black woman, Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel), might be diversity divorced from any historical context, but the alternative — another costume drama inhabited by white people — has never felt more wrong.

Bailey auditioned for the part in 2018 while appearing in Company, sending off a tape to Rhimes’s production company, Shondaland. ‘I got offered the job on my 31st birthday, 25 April 2019,’ he recalls. Filming started in July 2019 and ended in March 2020, narrowly avoiding any impact from the pandemic.

‘For me it feels like a lockdown anyway when I’m working, so it’s a long time since I can remember normal life.’ Has he been he a banana bread-baking stereotype over lockdowns? ‘I made more than banana bread,’ he laughs. ‘I started with banana bread but went on to cinnamon rolls, although they looked like turds — terrible. But I made amazing hot cross buns.’

The million dollar cliché: what did he learn about himself? ‘I feel more complicated than I thought I was,’ he says. ‘And then I’ve been affirmed by certain things. I did a lot of cycling between lockdowns, in Cornwall and around Italy last summer — pure recharge, pure perspective. Nature is so important. I know everyone’s saying that, and that some people can just keep going flat out, but I know I need to recharge. And I love a bath. I’ve had weeks where I’ve had a minimum of two a day.’ He suddenly looks horrified. ‘Actually, that’s awful. Don’t put that, ’cause it’s wasting water.’

Barely has ‘what did you miss the most?’ escaped from my lips and he exclaims, ‘Theatre! Not just theatre, but the possibility of theatre. But then, I’ve been watching really brilliant theatre creatives smashing it on TV instead.’ He points out that Bridgerton cast members Rosheuvel, Ruth Gemmell, Adjoa Andoh and Luke Thompson are all regulars on the stage. ‘We should be proud in Britain that there’s a massive crossover between theatre and TV. It’s not a semi-permeable membrane: it’s all one talent pool.’

Could the Government be doing more to support theatre? ‘Absolutely. It’s just the people who are making the decisions; if it had been someone who loves theatre, and understood the importance of it, this would never have happened. There are certain things in life where you go, “That’s a marker”, and the [2019] government campaign about Fatima having to retrain in cyber was one. That was a wound that will take a long time to heal. And the other marker of a moment is Ruth Sheen’s performance in It’s A Sin [the veteran actress had a cameo as a hospital visitor who took Keeley Hawes’ character to task in the final episode]. The last year hasn’t been about Christmas and Easter. It’s been about markers like those.’

Bailey has been described online as ‘openly gay’. I point out that no actors are ever described as ‘openly straight’, and he laughs. ‘I’d say I’m not openly gay. I’m just gay.’ Although he is wary of discussing his sexuality for the sake of it. ‘Then it becomes a commodity and a currency. I knew that I wanted to be visible about my sexuality, because in all the territories that Netflix goes out in, there might be a boy somewhere that goes, “Wait, what?” Which is what I didn’t have when I was young. All I know is that I’m happy to keep working really hard and if there are opportunities for representation, and to make that point, then that’s something I’ll always strive to do.’

Like just about everyone else, he loved It’s A Sin. ‘It was an incredible way to talk about an awful pandemic, and an absolute tragedy that so many people will be triggered by it. In Ruth Sheen’s character, you have a heterosexual woman who is mother to a gay son, challenging another mother. I found that rage incredible. The gay fantasy isn’t just hanging out in bars and meeting men. The gay fantasy is to have guardian angels of allyship.’

He’s hesitant to say whether he agrees with director Russell T Davies’ assertion that gay people should play gay roles. ‘It’s a big old conversation and one I’ve spoken to Russell about, and many other actors. But it’s really hard to give a sound bite to sum up.’

I tell him I don’t want a sound bite. ‘It’s about redressing the balance of access to roles. There just aren’t that many gay roles, so when straight actors go to take that space up, it’s eliminating the chance for other [gay actors].

‘We know there has been a history of needing to be closeted to succeed and be famous, especially in acting. And the idea of not being able to believe heterosexual relations and narrative, if you know one of the actors is gay… everyone should be able to play absolutely everything. But let’s blow away all the cobwebs, and one of the hang-ups and shadows of the past is that we need to be a lot more open to the idea of sexes playing different sides. There have been amazing performances by straight people playing gay and by gay people playing straight. It’s a moment to think about that, and I think Russell’s point was that there’s a vitality and a joy to It’s A Sin because he cast gay people in gay roles. That’s completely true. It’s not a bad thing to own your narrative.”

He is glad not to have received any flack for playing a straight role such as Viscount Anthony. ‘Bearing in mind the internet is a place where anyone can say anything, there hasn’t been anyone who’s had any animosity, or challenged it, so that’s good. Yes, I’m looking forward to gay actors playing gay parts, but for me it’s so important that everyone at home can see a bit of themselves on screen, to allow them to feel heard and seen, and also allow them to have aspirations.

‘Good actors can do anything, and there’ll be amazing writers who are willing to write for everyone. If there are people who don’t have access to creating their own TV shows or telling the stories they want to tell, then absolutely, everyone has to make space for them. That’s not just to do with gender or sexuality. It’s to do with race, religion and everything else.’ He pauses. ‘The idea that someone could read that and go, “God, that’s just a woke viewpoint,” I find really funny. It’s just basic sense, isn’t it?’

Another dog — this time a cockapoo — launches itself on Bailey mid-flow. ‘We have a family cockapoo. I looked after him in Lockdown 1,’ he says. ‘That was a real baptism of fire. He ate a sock. A full sock. It was a Muji sock. Stripy. And then it came up again three days later.’ What’s he called? ‘Benson, after the village I grew up in.’

His sounds an idyllic childhood. Brought up in Oxfordshire, he eschewed drama school for an Open University degree. Neither his parents nor three older sisters have anything to do with acting, but his interest was sparked as a child after watching a production of Oliver in the village hall. He joined the local drama club and also pootled around at the back of the class while one sister did ballet. ‘I wasn’t really invited, but I remember having Velcro trainers and just squeaking in the back and trying to do some pliés. I stopped dancing aged 12 because of the inevitable narrative — peer pressure. Ballet became a euphemism for something else.’

Was he the sort of kid who always got the lead in the school play? ‘I did play Jolly Roger in Jolly Roger,’ he smiles. ‘But then I was taken down a peg or two when I played a raindrop in Noah’s Ark. You win some, you lose some.’

With Bridgerton likely to run for many more seasons, and Viscount Anthony’s storyline taking centre stage in season two (now that sister Daphne is married off, the plot will focus on his own romantic life), Bailey’s newfound fame isn’t going to dissipate any time soon. He has mixed feelings. ‘You work and strive to be an actor and you can get better at it and enjoy it. But you can’t be good at fame or enjoy it. Some people do, some people don’t. It’s a different cocktail for everyone. There are suddenly opportunities available, which is brilliant, and I’m incredibly lucky. But then I realise this is when people say it’s about saying no, because what you say no to keeps you on the path.’

What also keeps him on the right path is the role itself. ‘Bridgerton is actually delivering on changing the bar, and the standard, of representation. Because of that, I’ve had amazing messages from people who have been able to talk about their sexuality, or people who have seen themselves or their children in the Duke of Hastings [storyline]. For me that’s the thing that’s always going to ground [the experience]. It’s a candyfloss juggernaut theme park ride — like multiple sensory overload.

‘So thank God for family. Thank God for friends.’

Welcome to the Dead Guy Death Match Elimination Round!

Due to the broad nature of death as a concept, most of the submitted characters only received a few votes each causing a massive tie. I figured the fairest way to sort out this issue would be to hold an elimination round to let you guys vote on who you want to make it into the bracket.

There will be two elimination rounds the first of which will start on Monday the 3rd of April at 3pm BST and the second will start on Saturday the 8th of April at 3pm BST.

Elimination Round 1 will feature polls of 5 or 6 unrelated characters (all of the matchups were generated randomly) for you to vote on. The lowest voted character will be eliminated and all of the remaining options will progress to the bracket.

Elimination Round 2 will feature polls of differing numbers of characters from the same or similar media and only the highest ranked character among them will progress to the bracket, all of the others will be eliminated.

Both sets of polls will last 24 hours.

I've tried my best to only include official images for all of the characters on the polls but I'm not familiar with every series listed so, when the polls go up, if you notice I've used a fanart or cosplay image without permission or credit please let me know and I'll add credit and correct it for any future appearances of that character.

Why do I do this to myself?

Sup everyone. Surprised to see me? Yeah I'm surprised to be posting. But as my head get slowly closer to exploding despite me doing everything that normally helps with my headaches? I thought I'd share a Miraculous hot take that I came up with a while ago but never actually shared. Warning. Spoilers and slight salt ahead.

Okay, so while I was trying to take a nap to hopefully rid myself of this headache, my mind went back over opinions I have come across on Tumblr and other sites as a sort of "yeah right, I'm not letting you sleep, have some month old anger instead". Specifically around Zoe Lee and how she's a Mary Sue.

Now. Three things piss me off about the term Mary Sue just on its own. Number one, it's more than likely being used incorrectly. Number two, it forever ruins a great sounding name (Mary Sue just sounds sweet to me and I would use for the kind neighbour next door if it wasn't for this) and three? Is used as an insult despite being EXACTLY WHAT SUPERMAN IS AND I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL WITH A GODDAMN NUKE SO COME AT ME!

pants Sorry. That always gets to me. Anyway, the term as it's applied to Zoe? Falls firmly in the first scenario. See, people call her a Mary Sue when in reality what they mean is "bland nice girl" so kind of like Mylene until Horrificator or Rose until Princess Fragrance where we actually saw more of their personality. I'd go further into what I mean but that's not the point of this.

No, the point is all the people who say Zoe has no reason to exist and to them I say. "She's a fictional character her reason is because the writers say so." But... I also agree. This is where the salt comes in because, had Miraculous not been stubbornly controlled by a bullying manchild incapable of receiving criticism, who also hates a teenage girl he made up to an extent that it's disturbing? Zoe wouldn't exist.

Now people have said that she was just a replacement for Chloe. And again I agree but not for the reasons they believe. Zoe is what Chloe should have become had Mr "nobody appreciates me so I'll put myself in the show telling them why they are idiots" actually followed through on the redemption arc. Yes I'm insulting him more than I have ever even mentioned him before. Why? Because I recently saw his tweets where he said Chloe wasn't abused because she has a father throwing money at her despite her mother rejecting her existence. Fuck. Him. Not to mention the ones where he basically calls us idiots for thinking Chloe was getting redeemed in the first place.

Anyway I'm getting off topic. What do I mean when I say Zoe is basically a redeemed Chloe? Well our first introduction to her in Sole Crusher shows she's capable of being a copy of Chloe, something she does because she just wants to feel loved by her family. We know from the whole Queen wasp thing that Chloe doubts her mother's love for her (something that is never mentioned again despite Audrey's opinion on Chloe never really seeming to change. Unless you want to count keeping her like some kind of mini me which is... Arguably worse and reminds me of how Chloe treats Sabrina) and it was believed by the fandom that Chloe acted the way she did because she wanted her mother to love her and be proud of her. But nope. She's just irredeemably evil. Despite being a 15 year old girl who still cuddles her bear and sucks her thumb for comfort when she's upset. Totally evil.

Grr... next. Point. Before I devolve into pointing out all the times Thomas Asshole showed he knew jackshit about characterisation.

Anyway. After Zoe realises that she'll never get her family's love in a way she's satisfied with she turns to her newfound friends for comfort cutting all attempts to please her mother. Something we expected Chloe to do. Then comes Queen Banana. Not only is Zoe given the bee miraculous (which I don't understand why people were surprised at, who else was gonna get it? Aurora? Marinette doesn't go far to pick new members. And if you say, "well they could always just fuse" you clearly don't understand the benefit to having another person for the Akuma to focus on.) But the way she got Chloe to keep the charm showed that she's capable of manipulating people. A skill we all thought Chloe would put be able to put to better use should she be redeemed. See Matt's Honey and Vinegar comic for a brilliant example of this.

Then we get to the major point in my mind. Something everyone (may be an exaggeration) had pegged for Zoe since she was introduced and that most theorised for Chloe as a potential explanation for some of her actions. Having feelings for Marinette. Now when this was confirmed it wasn't a surprise to me. It was so far from a surprise I was actually slightly disgusted that they chose Zoe to be the blatant one and not confirm Rose and Juleka or even Marc and Nathaniel. You can say it's obvious from how Rose and Juleka interact but Alya and Marinette act the same at times and they haven't known each other nearly as long. Or as intimately since Juleka kept Rose's illness a secret for who knows how long and that tore her to pieces every time it happened. I'm a dude. I'm so conditioned to see Yuri in female friendships that I've reconditioned myself to go the opposite way and assume it's just me being perverted. Do I believe Juleka and Rose are a couple? Yes. Will I call it canon? Not until I see a kiss, because they've definitely already confessed by now if it's true. Do I care if the writers confirmed it? No. Because JK Rowling said Dumbledore was gay and Hermione could be black. Only one of those is possible given what she's written, the other is clearly just an attempt to please this new era obsessed with inclusion at the expense of preestablished facts.

Dammit I got off topic again. Anyway, Chloe has been in the same class as Marinette for the past four years, something I remember joking about a while back calling Chloe out for being a stalker. But with her dad being Mayor, her fully using that to get what she wants even in school, and her focus on making Marinette miserable to such an extent that it's almost like Mari is the only target Chloe actually cares about hurting? Well I've seen enough "bully because I like you", "lash out because I'm confused" and "overcompensate because it's not normal/ my parents would disown me if they knew" tropes to suspect that they're might be a deeper meaning to why she does it.

Or at least that's what I would think. You know. If she wasn't completely and utterly evil. Between all the play heroes, tickle fights with Sabrina until they fall asleep, and being the sole person to throw off an Akuma before it takes hold because of their firm belief they are a hero. I mean how can you not see how evil and irredeemable she is when she has all that on her resumè?

sighs To finish up I want to make one thing clear. I like Zoe. In better hands I'm sure I'd have loved her even more but, even if she's just the replacement we were given so we'd shut up about Chloe, the fact is she's a good friend to Marinette (her lack of presence and late introduction means she hasn't done anything to annoy me like the others have), her design is amazing (reminds me of Equestria Girls Sunset Shimmer actually) and is basically the only one Chloe can't touch. The potential she brings to fanworks is absolutely staggering but in the show as it is? She's another pillar of support for Marinette. With the crap that girls gone through? That's more than enough for me.
