QOTS Rewatch - 5x05 - Mas Dinero Mas Problemas

I think this is my second-favorite full episode of the season (I mean we'll see, I still have a few more to get through until the end) which is saying something because obviously 5x09 is incredible too but there's something about this one that's just unmatchably fun. I feel this way about 1x05 too, actually! It's not like a serious "jeresa episode" the way 1x03 or 1x06 are, and 5x05 isn't like 5x02 or 5x09 (or even 5x08 to a point), but it is so fun that it makes for really delightful rewatching. Here, go read my live reaction to it last year, then come back for a few updated thoughts.

What's funny now re-reading my live reaction is how preoccupied I was with how the season (the entire show) would end. It really kept me from focusing on the episode itself, and I suspect that's true for the remaining episodes, too. It was less true in the first four, where more of my recapping was focused on dissecting the episode itself. I guess by this point, watching live, the anxiety about where it was heading and the sense of pressure regarding how little screen time was left made it harder to just watch the episode for what it was.

With the benefit of hindsight, I'd say this episode is really so enjoyable, in a way it apparently wasn't when I was just totally consumed with whether Teresa and James were going to get their happy ending.

It's also funny, revisiting my initial recap, how irritated I was by this point with Pote. I think my Kote irritation didn't really pick up until towards the end, and honestly the Kote stuff has been totally fine up until this point, if I'm being fair. But by this episode Pote had definitely overstayed his welcome as a boorish sexist uninteresting bodyguard lol. Listen I appreciate him for what he was--a loyal sicario to a female boss who, against the cartel odds of the time, he'd grown enormous respect (which he never wavered from). But the sexism gets to be so stupid. I really feel like Pote is there for the men who watch the show to appreciate and laugh at his dumb sexist jokes. I guess it works because I know Pote is totally a fan favorite. But by the time this episode ends I can barely tolerate him anymore. I guess I'm way too much of a politically correct queer liberal snowflake or something 😂

And a word about the Jeresa content: my point from my original recap that I wished we could get a bit more than just business talk between these two for the entire middle section of the season still stands, but. But. I was thinking back to the early part of season 3, right? Episodes 3, 4, and 5 up to the end? This is also a time when Teresa was keeping James at a distance. She wasn't sure she fully trusted him yet and she wasn't ready to really let him in. In these episodes too, there isn't much aside from business stuff between them. In fact, I find these episodes (Jeresa-wise) comparable to this one, 5x05. They are "all business" while still the body language and non-verbal signals are totally more than just business and feed the tension between them. Even without "personal" conversation this episode (like we got more of later in season 3 -- 3x08 especially), it works for me as a relationship-building episode because it shows how their working together, when they're in sync, does build their personal relationship too (and makes it impossible to ignore the simmering tension between them).

I think what makes the middle of this season feel less satisfying than early season 3 is just that 5x03 and 5x04 had such a fissure that was never satisfactorily addressed. I do understand that part of the point of this season was that she had to get 'ugly' and truly questionable and that the distance between them would be because of that and not because of trust issues. So I'm okay with that. But (and I know I'm getting ahead of myself here and I'll talk about this more in the next two episodes) I just wish we'd had a bit more explicit dialogue between them so that we could've heard her grappling a bit more with her decisions and thus understood their relationship and what was underlying its development this season.

(But it still doesn’t make sense for James to stick around for all of this just because she asked when he doesn’t believe in any of it and hates who she’s become. When do we get a feasible explanation beyond the implication that he loves her? Like, yes, obviously, we know that, but why do they want James to have absolutely zero self-respect? Tell me that preview for 5x06 signifies we are moving into the part of the story that explains why it was important for James to stay and be a simp etc.)

QotS 5x05: Reactions

Hi, 

First of all, I don’t think that Marcel will stay alive (after rewatching episode 4), remember when Pote killed Lucien, his blood splashed on a picture with him and Marcel. If it’s not foreshadowing, I don’t know what it is?!

Regarding 5x05, we finally have the boat that we have seen Teresa on it in France. 

Also, don’t like this secret agent thing with KG and Boaz, maybe KG will die. Interesting this time it’s KG that took coke, not Teresa, in a way to see the effect that this drug has on people. Like this Teresa can realize in a way what she is into. 

Again, James will not die. He is Death. 

Oksana cannot take Teresa’s business. She is too weak. And I believe in the introduction that Kostya will be the last person Teresa will see, because they mention it again. 

Yes, we had finally Teresa and James on a balcony together as the closing scene. 

Can’t wait the face of Pote when he will learn that he is expecting a daughter. 

I’m wondering more and more if Teresa’s actions is not related to the drug she is using. I find this, “Cocaine causes a short-lived, intense high that is immediately followed by the opposite—intense depression, edginess and a craving for more of the drug. People who use it often don’t eat or sleep properly. They can experience greatly increased heart rate, muscle spasms and convulsions. The drug can make people feel paranoid, angry, hostile and anxious—even when they aren’t high.” So maybe, at the beginning everything is very intense, enjoyable, and finally everything go to Hell. Interesting parallel. And when you add the color white, with her outfit also can be something with it, or when George is looking for sleep deprivation.

Honestly, Teresa questioning James on “why is doing this type of work a problem for you now?”, IMO, is no different from Devon telling him that “this (the job), isn’t about your feelings, just get it done”. I’ll explain exactly how and why it all means the same in my mind, at a later time, when I’m not still angry --- but what Teresa said to James this episode was cruel, sick, and very insensitive.

QOTS 5x05 Reaction Post

Good news if you like your blood bath’s angst free: there’s zero agonizing over pulling the trigger this week, thanks to some less morally grey villains.

But if you were looking for any fallout or repercussions or I don’t know an acknowledgement of last week’s proceedings effects on the interpersonal relationships of La Familia you’ve come to the wrong place.  

That definitely does not happen.  Instead we have the A plot of Teresa takes Europe and the B plot of GTFO Before Boaz Murders You KG.  The KG/Boaz stuff was allowed to leisurely marinate in it’s foreboding.  The Teresa takes Europe plot was like three episodes worth of plot in 30 minutes.

Don’t ask me to explain the Oksana issue.  I couldn’t even if I tried lol.  The show needed a reason to get Teresa to Europe so sure, paper-thin excuse, come on down!

I’ll accept nearly any reason to get the gang in suits and night out attire tbh. I’m easy like that.

Overall I liked the idea of this episode more than the execution.  The stuff with Teresa and Oksana and Teresa and Kelly Anne could have been great if it were allowed to breath a bit more but instead I was like “wait, what? EUROPE! the huh now? HEIST! who? INTERNATIONAL INCIDENT! 

I know there were scenes longer than 30 seconds but it sure didn’t feel like it watching live lol

I did thoroughly enjoy Teresa and Oksana kicking Durand’s ass though.

I thought we were going to get a Jeresa art heist but can it really be called a heist if all it entailed was James walking by the painting *once* and being like ok got it lmao.  TOO COMPETENT, VALDEZ.

(Seriously though is there anything not on his resume? He’s got the full vest of criminal scout badges: art theft, motorcycle stunts, private army, surveillance, assassinations, etc etc.)

I love that we’re conditioned as an audience now to know James not appearing at the showdown = him holed up in his sniper’s den.  That was badass.

I do kinda wish Rocco had been there to be a part of the massacre. I’d have loved to see Teresa encounter him again.

Though gotta love the moment Teresa hears Rocco is dead she’s like ca-ching EUROPE BABY.

Can you tell I’m avoiding talking about KG and the pervasive feeling of imminent doom hanging over all of his scenes???

Because my dude, Boaz looked you straight in the eye and showed you what he does to people “infiltrating his business”...get out while you can I beg of you!!

Also don’t mind that forklift in reverse beeping sound, it’s all the anvils loaded up for Pote’s dialogue.  Saying “You’re never going to be left behind” to Kelly Anne is like the same as pushing the Indiana Jones boulder of doom off the ledge, and we’ve seen how much Pote sucks at running.

P.S. When Pote interrupted Kelly Anne’s super vulnerable conversation to insist their baby HAD to be a boy...I might have whispered: “dump him.”

And one last thing, it looks like 5x06 will make up for it but if I were the editor of this ep, I’d have cut a few of the KG/Boaz scenes to fit in just a few longer scenes between A plot characters...particularly Jeresa after last ep would have been nice. And oh idk James learning about the pregnancy on screen perhaps? Who even told him? Or at the very least squeeze in James and Pote’s reaction to Teresa walking out of her unarmed meeting with Durand holding him at gunpoint b/c that would have been priceless.  But that’s just me.

And speaking of that preview...whew.  Not sure I’ll survive 5x06.  Goodbye sweet world, cause of death: Jeresa content.  Cannot wait.
