Most annoying NMJ or JC take is when someone that dislikes them is like "oh you're a fan of him? *scoff* Well obviously you've only seen cql, where he was super watered down. In the novel he's a dislikable asshole and that's the objectively superior canon I'm working from instead of your woobified fanfic." Meanwhile your main canon is novel canon and you genuinely find novel Jiang Cheng and Nie Mingjue complex sympathetic characters.

if nie huaisang had a twin he wouldn't just be one of those twins who occasionally swaps places with their sibling — no, no one would even know that he had a twin.
(no one except for qinghe nie, of course.)
the nie twins would be frighteningly dedicated to keeping up the act so that they would only need to do half the work and attend half the classes/conferences/events/etc.
(notice that i didn't say half the training, since unfortunately da-ge is more than aware that he has two brothers, not one.)
the poor lans at cloud recesses would feel like they're absolutely losing their minds since they know they just saw nie huaisang in class with lan qiren less than five minutes ago, but somehow he's now by the river on the other side of cloud recesses?!
can he teleport? can he just move really fast? can he time-travel? is one of them an illusion or a doppelganger? how can he be in two places at the same time?! no one knows!!
and this of course continues at sect conferences, as well — someone will see nie huaisang sitting by his brother in the meeting hall, but when they leave the room and walk down the hall to go outside, there he is peacefully reading a book out in the gardens! how?!
---
the only way they can really be differentiated is by their sabers, which are similar but not quite the same — but that's irrelevant, since nie huaisang is never seen carrying a saber anway, so how is anyone (outside the sect) to notice?
---
they would be absolutely obsessed with making sure that no one outside the sect ever saw them both at the same time, making an effort to disguise the other in ordinary disciple robes, style their hair differently, and even carry a saber any time that the two of them have to be near each other at the same time.
(but only when they have to be near each other — otherwise, they just make an effort to never be seen together.)
---
both of the twins go to the indoctrination, but one of them goes in disguise.
no one's going to notice if a random little nie disciple goes missing, but they will notice if the nie heir himself disappears. so while one of them stays in place, the other goes exploring...
and when the disastrous night hunt happens, they're able to get help.
(—and maybe nie mingjue himself arrives just in time to wrest that stupid cursed sword away from wei wuxian before he can get any bright ideas, saving us all a lot of heartbreak in the long run...)

do people have headcanons for how the Nie mothers died? Is there a non-canon but widely accepted fandom headcanon? I'm curious, we got a death story for their father but not their mothers.

Finally ready to talk about how Nie Huaisang’s revelation of his Sect’s immoral sacrifices to the Sword Spirit in Fatal Journey directly calls back to the main show’s overarching plot re: the vilification of the entire Wen clan, and the subsequent persecution of Wei Wuxian for attempting to stand up for the Dafan Wen sect.
Most notably, this parallel occurs as Nie Huaisang challenges his brother on why the Nie can heartlessly sacrifice human beings for the sake of controlling the sword spirit:
Tumblr media
["This is not balance, but sacrificing flesh and blood."]
I don’t think I can even try to describe how this line so perfectly frames the ideological argument of the value of human life against some higher measure of worth. Especially as Zonghui tries to reason that:
Tumblr media
["Those corpses belong to evil men."]
To the contrary, this only serves to strengthen Nie Huaisang’s conviction, because it doesn’t matter to him if they were good or evil. He looks straight into his older brother’s eyes as he counters:
Tumblr media
["Aren't they human beings?"]
Consider the weight of the entire chronological plot of MDZS, of Wei Wuxian’s character arc, until this moment:
How, at this point in the main story’s time-skip, Nie Huaisang may still be grieving the loss of his friend and trying to reconcile his experience of Wei-xiong's character with the reputation of Yiling Laozu - and how that reputation was both built up and torn down by the very Sect leaders who remain in power: his brother included.
Consider how Nie Huaisang, in this moment, may remember that his dear friend stood up against everyone - again, the Nie included - when he dared speak out against this same polarised judgement of good and evil, and how Wei-xiong died for it.
And so now, here, Nie Huaisang finally dares to ask -
“Are you qualified for deciding their fate?”
Tumblr media
Of course, at this point, we know that Nie Mingjue himself was a young leader newly minted by war, trying to balance the welfare of his clan against the will of the more powerful sects, and that (more pertinent to the plot of Fatal Journey) he is simply trying to maintain Nie tradition and carry out the role he has been taught to assume since childhood.
But just like his friend before him (and with a fair amount of desperation, considering this might very well be the moment Nie Huaisang fully comprehends the consequences of Dage’s illness - that he will eventually, and is already, sacrificing himself for the same end) Nie Huaisang dares to ask his brother, “Even if [our ancestors] are wrong, you would follow their lead?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This scene is, of course, much more than an echo of past prejudices from the war against the Wen. It becomes a question of Nie Mingjue’s sanity - how much his illness is influencing his perception of reality, and how it not only perpetuates the prejudices from the war, but also actively harms the Nie by exposing the skewed morals at the core of their clan identity.
But that aside, it is this conflict of ideology that Nie Huaisang exposes which brings us right back to Wei Wuxian, and his stand against the main Sects and their systematic prejudice. In this moment, Nie Huaisang recognises that same flaw, and calls it out in his brother - not only for his current actions, but (with some internal, existential horror) for the crimes of their ancestors the Nie are built upon: sacrificing human beings in order to maintain a fallacy of harmony that is ultimately corrupt.
I wonder if Nie Huaisang would later think back on this moment and grieve in understanding for his friend.
I wonder if his choices from then on - from this moment of Fatal Journey to the resurrection of Wei Wuxian, and further - Nie Huaisang's actions were partially guided by the example of Wei Wuxian.
Am I thinking about a demonic cultivator Nie Huaisang now? Yes absolutely.
I could go on, but I’m gunna stop here. I’m just so full of feelings for the character growth of Nie Huaisang in Fatal Journey.

Wei-xiong! Jiang-xiong!
Wei-xiong! Wei-xiong! I heard you came back! It's really you!
Nie Huaisang of Nie Clan, greets Grandmaster.
Be careful! This is my favorite holding fan! It's exquisitely crafted and carefully painted. How is it? It's one of the finest grade, isn't it?
I don't know, I really don't know. Don't ask me, I really don't know.
—Nie Huaisang
Known as the Headshaker and current leader of Nie Clan after his older brother, Nie Mingjue. He is also known as the manipulator as he set the whole scene and made everyone his puppets on his hand strings. Nevertheless he achieved his goal of avenging his brother.

you ever wake up and think about nie huaisang's entirely off-screen journey?
(thirteen years.) do you think about how easy and yet nauseating it must've felt for nie huaisang to use his own childhood self as a mask? to maintain the appearance of a vapid child quick to run to others and whine instead of setting aside hobbies and trying to figure out how to work through responsibility?
(thirteen years.) what was he thinking? surely he didn't formulate everything to a tee in one sitting. how long had he taken until he was fully sinking into the balancing act of pretending he hadn't changed one bit in front of all the other clans, in front of his elder brother's close sworn brothers, while running the qinghe nie sect well enough behind the scenes to still maintain their unequivocal loyalty and respect?
(thirteen years.) do you think he hated himself now and then for becoming so quietly manipulative and focused on the ends over the means? looked at himself in the mirror at times and had to turn away because he saw a flicker of the one man he was trying to permanently unravel in revenge, the man his brother despised for always stooping to trickery?
(thirteen years.) how often did he get nightmares of qi deviations and being attacked, of that near-miss opportunity to save his older brother? the war and aftermath changed his school friends permanently and nie huaisang, in spite of his ability to worm his way out of things he didn't want to confront, was not an exception. how long until he got used to shoving his own squeamishness aside, accepting losses and violence and collateral damage and pain to other people for his own goals?
(thirteen years.) it drives me crazy. it drives me so damn crazy that mdzs is a story told from the perspective of wei wuxian. crazy that a few choice words and meaningful reactions at guanyin temple are the only reason we know even a fraction of what nie huaisang did over those years and why.
(thirteen years.) lan wangji and jiang wanyin were not the only ones who had to bear with the weight of time on their grief.
how many fans and paintbrushes can a person collect in thirteen years? (i don't know, i don't know, i don't know.)

Proposal - Nie Huaisang
Tumblr media
Pairing: Nie Huaisang x f!reader
Word Count: 1669 words
Warnings/tags: none i think, the events leading up to the wedding, fluff
Notes: (C/N)-your clan's name, (Y/N)-your name
A/N: I planned this to be a one-shot but I got carried away, so the actual action *wink wink* will happen in the next chapter.
I did some completely unnecessary research for this (my adhd ass basically got distracted) but nothing specific. My cultural knowledge is from the show so I'm sorry for any possible mistakes regarding culture. This is my first time writing The Untamed. Also English is not my first language.
Part 2
You met Nie Huaisang at one of the cultivation meetings Jin Guangyao held in Carp Tower. You were a member of one of the smaller clans, so you didn't attend such gatherings in general. That one time your older brother insisted for you to come, as there were some issues to be discussed which might need your expertise as a healer.
During the many battles of the Sunshot Campaign, you actively participated in the healing of wounded soldiers, so many members from the bigger clans also knew you. So it was no wonder they were all pleasantly surprised to see you there at the meeting. After the greetings and toasts you were free to mingle, and almost everyone greeted you with a pleasant smile and grateful eyes. You also greeted them politely, asking about their family and health.
After a while you noticed that Zewu-jun were looking at you, wanting to invite you over to where he was standing with his brother Lan Wangji, Jin Guangyao and another finely dressed young man. As you walked over Lianfang-zun excused himself to greet the other guests. You turned to the remaining three men with a smile, and they bowed to you in return.
"(C/N)(Y/N). It's so nice to see you. What brings you here?" Lan Xichen asked with a small smile on his lips.
"Apparently, Lianfang-zun requires my help with something. And I took the chance to reunite with old acquaintances."
Lan Wangji stared at you in his usual way, not showing any of his emotions. You also wanted to ask what brought him here, but with a curt nod to you and his brother he also excused himself. Finally, you turned to the man now standing next to Lan Xichen. You had an attention to detail, so only a quick glance was enough for you to notice his handsome face and elegant clothing however, you didn't remember meeting him before.
"It's nice to meet you, Master...," you trailed off somewhat nervously as you didn't know how to address him.
He appeared lost in thought for a moment as he seemed to ever so slightly jump at your words. Still, he quickly schooled his expression into a calm and dignified look, but you could still see his nervousness underneath.
"I am Nie Huaisang. Pleased to meet you Lady (C/N)," he said as he bowed to you again, holding his fan in his hands.
As you realized your previous mistake, you were quick to return his bow.
"Ahh, please excuse my rudeness Clan Leader Nie."
He didn't seem offended at all as he glanced at you with a small smile, which appeared to be sad to you. You knew the story of his ascension to clan leader, after all his brother's death was still a widely discussed topic between cultivators. You also heard the various mean stories about Nie Huaisang himself, in which cultivators often referred to him as the Head Shaker or Good-For-Nothing. Stealing another glance at the man, he didn't seem quite as incompetent to you as these stories described him. He might not carry a sword and appear generally nervous, but you could also see the intelligence in his eyes. Right when you wanted to ask him about the situation in Qinghe, your brother called out to you to return to your tables. You exchanged bows with the two men again and returned to where your clan was sitting. However, you didn't seem to think about anything else that day but the handsome and mysterious Clan Leader Nie.
In the upcoming weeks you had the chance to meet with Nie Huaisang many more times, at political meetings and at night hunts too. You were not one to attend often, but as time went by you became more and more interested in the leader of the Nie Clan. As far as men go, he was the first one with whom you could always stir up meaningful conversations about various topics, not just politics or war. As someone who were always interested in music and arts, you found it exceptionally refreshing to listen to him talk about his passions, especially painting and his favourite fans. Looking at him, it always made you happy to see him quite relaxed during your conversations. After a while he even became bolder and started to show you his beautiful smile and laugh and you had to realize, that you, at the same time, started to fall in love with him.
Your brother always had a watchful eye on you two and he always let you know when he thought you spent enough time in the company of the clan leader. You understood his reasoning of course, so you always rejoined your family after a short conversation with Nie Huaisang.
After a few such meetings though, you started receiving gifts from him. At first you didn't know from whom they came from, but one time a messenger, who delivered some letters to your brother, handed you a neatly packaged hand-painted folding fan. It was the most beautiful thing you have ever seen, and you instantly knew who it was from. As you carefully traced the intricately painted lines on the fan with your fingertips your heart was beating so hard you felt it might jump out of your chest at any moment.
The next week your brother informed you that Clan Leader Nie requested a lunch with him and that you should also attend. Despite his reputation, everyone in your home made sure the preparation for the lunch were going smoothly. Everyone seemed excited to host such a high-ranking cultivator in your home. To say that you were nervous when the day finally arrived was an understatement. Actually, you thought you were never this nervous before.
During the lunch you were actually becoming calmer until your brother finally steered the conversation toward the actual meaning of the whole thing.
"Clan Leader Nie, may I ask the reason of your visit?" Your brother inquired after you exhausted all the general conversation topics.
Nie Huaisang seemed rather nervous too during the whole lunch, but looking at him now you were worried he might actually faint. Good thing you are a healer, you thought. For a few moments he sat there completely silent and almost motionless. Only his hands fiddling with his closed fan revealed his emotions. He looked up at your brother and opened his fan to hide behind it. The longer he spoke the quicker his hand moved the elegant accessory, and it seemed his face got redder by the minute.
"Clan Leader (C/N), as you probably noticed, we became quite well-acquainted with your sister. I would like to believe we became rather close even in the past few weeks. And you didn't seem opposed by my advances either. What I mean by all this is that...," he trailed off, even his ears were bright red by now. He appeared to be steeling himself for his next words. Finally he reluctantly lowered his fan and looked at you with frightened but hopeful eyes. God, you just wanted to hug him at that moment. But you couldn't, so you mustered your most encouraging smile and nodded at him. You were certain your cheeks were also red at that point. Nie Huaisang looked straight into your brother's eyes and said:
"I would like to ask for your permission to take your sister as my wife."
When he finally said it, it seemed like a huge stone was lifted off of his shoulders. His posture became more relaxed, but the fan opened again, only at his chest though, not covering his face. Now it was your turn to nervously glance at your brother. His face didn't show anger or disgust, only deep contemplation, which was a good sign, you thought.
"Clan Leader Nie, I am honored you think so highly of my sister. I have to say however, your bad reputation is not something I can ignore..."
"Gege!" You exclaimed, looking at your brother shocked and scared. Thinking back, you never thought your brother believed all those mean rumors about Nie Huaisang because he was just as good at reading people as you were.
"Meimei, let me finish," your brother said not even looking at you, a slight warning in his voice.
"Clan Leader Nie, as you said, I never opposed your relations with my sister. You seem to me an honorable man, and you never behaved inappropriately around her. But you have to understand, my sister's future depends on me. That's why I brought up your reputation. They say you are incompetent, but that's not what I see. I think you are very good at this whole political game. All I ask of you is to take care of my sister and don't let her reputation be ruined."
As he finished speaking you instantly turned to Nie Huaisang, who seemed to freeze, only his eyes turned impossibly big. His mind probably stuck to the same thought as yours, because that meant your brother actually agreed, right?
With his next sentence, he confirmed your suspicions: "I accept your proposal. If my sister agrees, she is yours."
You could only nod your head furiously as Nie Huaisang stood up and bowed deeply to your brother in thanks.
"Clan Leader (C/N), I assure you, your sister's happiness will always be my top priority. I will take care of her until my last day," Nie Huaisang said, his voice shaky.
As he straightened up, you could see his eyes glistening with unshed tears and you couldn't hold yourself back anymore. You basically jumped up, walked around the table and grabbed his shaking hands.
"I would love to be yours, Nie Huaisang," you said squeezing his hands.
He looked at you with that self-assured half smile you loved so much, and which he showed so rarely these days, but it always signaled some kind of mischief.
You didn't notice your brother looking at you two with a fond look on his face.
To be continued

Hey, novel people who can come with citations!
The timeline is busted, but what chronology is given for Sunshot generally and for Meng Yao’s trajectory after getting kicked down the stairs more specifically?
Because! Given that he’s from Yunping and joins up with the Nie clan to fight during Sunshot… what led to Meng Yao, born and raised in Yunmeng, to join up with an isolated northern sect (whose peculiar cultivation practice means they are less likely to welcome him as an inner disciple) and NOT with the local sect with ties to Lanling Jin that is currently desperate for new inner disciples and will take and advance anyone who can prove themselves?
Was Meng Yao living near Qinghe already? Was Sunshot already in full swing for a REALLY long time before Lotus Pier’s destruction? Was it a quirk of timing, and he joined up with Nie Mingjue in the little sliver of time when Jiang Cheng is still recovering/in hiding? Is it unstated because timelines and geography are fake and they’re even more fake if you aren’t one of the story’s two leads?

oooo for the AU Ask Game, an alternate universe where JYL marries someone else who isn't Jin Zixuan? (your choice on who she marries and why!)
Oooh this is a fun one! All right, here we go... this might change EVERYTHING lol
Who does JYL marry? There is absolutely no question in my mind that the best option in terms of inter-sect connections, and a desire on JC and WWX's parts that she be safe and cared for, is for her to marry Nie Mingjue. She would have had a chance to get to know him during the Sunshot campaign, and we all know NMJ drinks respect -women-juice for breakfast - and is a big softie, like look what he lets his brother get away with >.< So yeah, JYL goes to Qinghe and gets a spare didi out of the deal!
But why does she marry? Because yes, she still has feelings for JZXuan, but he's still a man-child who doesn't know a good thing when he sees it ;) But seriously, we have YMJ which is still rebuilding after the war and likely getting more and more in debt to get the supplies and manpower to fix up Lotus Pier, not to mention attracting new disciples to feed and clothe, so they'd need an alliance with another great sect - one that's stable financially and could even help YMJ. Gusu is still rebuilding as well, so they're out, and we've eliminated the Jin. THankfully Qinghe is a solid option all around (as stated above). And JYL has known from the time she was young that she would marry for an alliance, not for love - she would be the one to sit JC and WWX down to tell them it needs to be done (when they hear her suggestion of NMJ, that's the thing that gets them on board - they would have fought just about anyone else).
So at Koi Tower, things might be a little more uncertain because these clans are based on hereditary hierarchy, and without an heir along Jin Zixuan's line, his position is uncertain even if he's the only legitimate son. So JGS pushes for a marriage - even worse when he sees Qin Su's pursuit of JGY, because he'll be DAMNED if he allows JGY to marry before JZXuan. Sadly, I have no idea who he'd marry, probably the daughter of a smaller sect's leader (Yao or Ouyang maybe), but it would be a rushed deal and will make poor JZXuan miserable - but he'll do it because it's what's expected of him, and even though he will not love his wife, he will still give her far more respect than his father gave his mother (I know, low bar, but the boy is TRYING).
So with JYL engaged to NMJ by the time of the Phoenix Mountain Hunt, things go a little different - yes WWX will bust out the Wen remnants and fuck out of dodge, but JYL will go to NMJ and ask him to help WWX (at the very least give him a chance to explain instead of denouncing him with everyone else). This turns the tide for many things because once NMJ sees the conditions of the Burial Mounds and what's left of the Wen, he will be amenable to helping - but will do so under the condition that WWX give up demonic cultivation (and in fact he suggests Nie cultivation as an alternative - this will lead to a sad moment when WWX FINALLY comes up with a proper story and claim that WZL melted his core to explain that he's core-less, and after much crying all around, they can finally move forward from this mess).
So the Nie will lend their protection to the Wen in the Burial Mounds and actually suggest they move up into Qinghe - not by the Unclean Realm, but he will give them land to live on that isn't full of resentful energy, and they will have QHN's protection. This is good, and in return, a certain doctor meets NMJ and will start researching his condition to treat (and hey, if you wanna have fun, have her join NMJ & JYL, I'm easy ;)
So yeah! One change and everything changes like dominos :D
Thank you for the ask!

I don’t think we appreciate the atmosphere of Xinglu Ridge enough - specifically, how it’s portrayed in Fatal Journey.
It is cold: the fog closes around anyone who enters, so thick they can barely see.
It is dark and barren: the man-winding vines feast on the flesh and blood of unfortunate wanderers for nutrients - sunlight does not reach here, at any time of the year.
Seasons, therefore, mean nothing- a liminal space that grows outside the passage of time.
But, twisted as this place seems, the vines have simply adapted to their habitat, finding nourishment in the only resource available to them:
They, like all living things, have a survival instinct. And that instinct stops them from pursuing their prey into the Nie sect’s ancestral hall when the Sword Spirit has become unbalanced. They know the Sword Spirit requires sacrifice.
As does Nie Mingjue.
