[TRANSLATION] VOGUE KOREA Magazine April 2019 issue x JUS2
190319 Vogue Korea JUS2 April ‘19 photoshoot & interview
Translated by defdaily & doobseedoda
JUS2 is a unit of two members who were in charge of intensity in GOT7. This is a chemistry created when JB and Yugyeom, who love R&B in common, were absorbed in creative activities. Their hybridization was completed in a "minimal" state, which is neither strong nor soft. The mini album contains a story called six senses. Starting with the word Focus on Me, Drunk on You, Touch, Senses, Love Talk, and Long Black. It doesn't mean much nowadays to classify music into genres, but there are emotions of Deep House, Slow Jam and R&B in JUS2's music.
Tumblr media
The unit's name was bound to be JUS2. It's only JB and Yugyeom, and it's a stage that can only be presented. "Actually, JUS2 means that it's both a performance and a song. We danced, sang, wrote and composed, and did everything." JUS2 is an example of a completely new creation without losing the members' identity in the group and reveal their talents and tastes.
Q. We are curious about the similarities and differences between you two.
JB: Our personalities are similar but our lifestyles are different. I really don't believe in blood type personalities but we're both type A and there is definitely a timid side to us. When you see us in reality we don't seem that timid. To sum it up, we're both timid and not timid at the same time (laugh). Both of us are considerate so we match well in some aspects. Yugyeom is all about 'let's live life having fun'.
Yugyeom: I don't put too much meaning behind the word 'happiness' and I'm a person who often feels happiness (doing little things).
JB: I like enjoying everyday life but I have a compulsion to not let my thoughts and mind slip alway so I tend to think a lot. There is music that we both like and there's also a point where (our styles) meet. I like strong/fast paced music and I also like calm smooth music, I like all kinds of music. Yugyeom likes the strong turn up kind of music and tends to lean towards the strong music.
Q. If GOT7's energy is bright and fresh, what would JUS2’s energy be?
Yugyeom: Jus2 would be having control and restraining yourself. If GOT7's energy is 'attacking' then JUS2’s energy is more like 'holding yourself back'.
JB: If GOT7 were the shooting star ice cream then JUS2 would be the Vanilla ice cream. Soft and smooth. Personally I like JJ Project's album the most. The story and track order contained all of what I wanted to say/include so it's the album I'm most proud of. After that is JUS2’s album which I'm highly satisfied with. Although there is no overall storyline, the theme of sensation was unraveled.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Q. You wrote and composed 'Focus On Me', if you could tell us about the collaboration process.
Yugyeom: We listen to the track and figure out whether to decide the theme first or make the melody first. The theme of FOCUS came up while writing the melody for Focus On Me and that's how it was settled. If anyone can think of a melody while listening to MR, they record it. "This part seems okay" then JB hyung sings it and I try singing it then we keep matching parts.
JB: At the start when I was working on the song and writing the chorus 'focus on me' stuck to me as matching. Since everyone else liked it we decided on it as the theme and wrote the lyrics. The first and second verse were written separately then the lyrics were put together.
Q. In what moments does inspiration tend to come to you?
JB: When I sense if a song's mood is a certain way, I think about what happened in the past or whať's happening now or what I've seen in movies and books. If I get inspiration first then I write it down in my notebook or phone. There are times when I turn songs on and look over what I have written down from the past. And sometimes the lyrics match what you want.
Q. What kind of lyrics do you think are good lyrics?
Yugyeom: the way you listen and the way you write is different. I'm the type to play a melody when I'm trying to write lyrics then I see what matches well in terms of pronunciation. JB hyung pays more attention to the lyrics so lyrics I could never think of came up (from JB). I would be into something else and hyung would come up with lyrics like ”Today you'll raise the white flag".
Tumblr media
Q. What is a point you appreciate about each other's dancing?
JB: Yugyeom's dancing line is very clean cut. When he stretches out, the lines are really pretty and it also gives off a modern dance feel. He is the best at peculiar moves with his long legs. On the other hand my dance has more roughness.
Yugyeom: what's funny is, I realised this after watching the music video, that I dance with all my fingers out (?) together whereas hyung is the opposite
JB: (his fingers out together?) Yugyeom really likes this.
Yugyeom: That's what my favorite American dancer always did. It has become a habit.
Q. Yugyeom is always wearing black skinny pants in his Instagram dance videos, is it like a uniform?
JB: Not only when he dances, he just doesn't wear other pants in general. Yugyeom has lots of the same pants (laugh). He likes black skinny pants so much that he wears them even during practice. And he has stage shoes, which are more comfortable than sneakers, so he always wears them during practice too.
JB: For me I need the pants width to be big a little. And I always need to have sneakers on. Yugyeom likes skinny style while I'm the type to like a flimsy style.
Q. Things you talked about the most while preparing for JUS2.
JB: It was 'How should we organise/format the album”. Since it's our first time doing a minimal sound, we wondered if it would go well and we worried a lot about the album. We had lots of public relation meetings too (laugh). Looking back, it was fun. Feels like I've been travelling abroad for a few months. To be honest, I haven't been able to travel abroad much but whenever I travel even for a short time I feel really excited, but rather than an amusement park kind of fun I would feel a calm kind of fun. To paraphrase that, it's similar to the feeling.
Yugyeom: It was really fun. Seeing hyung almost everyday, we also talked a lot. I also liked the times where we would go grab a drink after finishing writing songs. Since JUS2 participated in songwriting and also outfits and choreography so it has lots of meaning. The teasers were also captured freely with a film camera while listening to music. Many new unique attempts were made in the preparation process.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Q. Feels like you have expanded a lot musically. Is there something you do to keep growing?
JB: When I see people I respect or people who are doing well think I should have more thoughts of ’Why is this all I can do'. That's how it works. I think. “Let's have a lot of experiences that will touch me, both indirectly and directly” When I have a chance, I go to exhibitions and think about the agony of the artists. I also wonder how I can use the SNS, which is so full of things, for my development. l once wondered how l could use so much SNS for my development. I take note of places and exhibitions recommended by people, I thought it would be good to get ideas from impressive artwork or videos.
Q. You've been a part of GOT7 for more than 6 years but this is your first time working together with just the two of you. Is there something new you learnt?
Yugyeom: There is no such thing. If I really try to find one, I thought hyung only ate Korean food but he actually likes eating even cream, curry and udon now.
JB: I feel like I've gotten influenced by the other members. I thought my preference for Korean food would never change but I've come to an acceptance point. Last time when we went to Paris, Bambam wanted to try snails. I rejected saying I could never eat snails but it was actually more delicious than I expected. That's the case, I have even eaten snails.
Tumblr media
Q. If you were to pick the happiest moment in your day?
JB: When I clean the cats' dung. I see with my eyes that I can do something for someone else. I feel joy seeing the cats in a good shape/image. When I see the bin full of their dung, pride overcomes me as l know (they) have become cleaner.
Yugyeom: I'm the type who likes having lots of schedules but there are times when I become tired physically. I consult with my company and decide on a day off, and the moment I step foot into my house I feel really happy. A break once in a while could be so sweet. I'm happy when I can sleep late after working on songs all night.
Q: Is there anything you've discovered or thought about differently recently?
JB: On the way home after producing yesterday, the taxi driver took a wrong turn and we ended up at Yeouido. Looking out at the buildings through the window, this thought came to me. Within those buildings, people may be fighting or happy but the buildings seen from within the taxi only just look beautiful. I thought maybe the world looks more beautiful if you see it from a distance instead of up close. I thought we too might need some distance in our life as well.
Q: Is there anything you've discovered or thought about differently recently?
Yugyeom: I have always thought this but recently there's something that I've felt more strongly.I must really love music a lot (laughs). I would go crazy if I don't listen to it. If lI'm not listening to music, it feels like I have to and l'd keep thinking about the music I want to listen to. I've been producing songs lately and they've been very healing to me. Listening to and making good music in itself is a source of healing to me. So l realised once again. Ah, I must really love music.
Tumblr media
Q. Do you feel the stress of writing while listening to music you like?
Yugyeom: not at all. I've never had such thoughts. There's a song I'm into lately. I really like Travis Scott's Can't Say' so l keep listening to it and watching the music video.
Q. JUS2 will have a world tour in April. GOT7 also proved themselves through a world tour too. What is the meaning behind world tours.
JB: It is like the result of one's efforts. Something that tells me how hard I've tried. An album allows me to witness the response to my agony/thoughts and a world tour allows me to experience that response.
Q. JB you've been uploading mixtapes on music sites for a few years now. How did this experience influence JUS2 work?
JB: I think it made me want to try doing what I really like. In fact, when you make music and keep storing them and going back to edit them, that way you won't have any results. Even if I get a beating (get punished) let's just show them!' that kind of mindset. The fans liked it but people around me reacted coolly. They said I put too much strength in it. I'm also considering different formats. Using the name Def. I wanted to differentiate between me who is in public and me who likes hip-hop R&B. Def. means the best with a full stop after it, ending it with the best. I wanted to convey the meaning that it's only over after I do my absolute best. Moving forward, of course l'll work hard doing the things I'm doing but I really want to show the image of me doing the things I like.
Q. What you want to achieve through JUS2.
JB: Music site ranking was not our goal. "Leť's show a fun and cool different colour”, let's show a completely different image from GOT7 were our goals. Actually even now I'm satisfied. As much as the album was well made, I like it/feel good.

Five Questions about Korea on Quora by the Korea-Curious
Welcome to the Quora Questions Series, where I answer five random, recent questions related to South Korea from Quora, the Q&A forum website.
In last week’s post, I answered questions about if Korea has milk, how did South Korea become so rich, GFriend idol group, if you need vaccines in Korea, and how women tourists should dress.
This week, I found five more questions about Korean holiday Chuseok, opinions of English language, Disney in Korea, and Korean translations of “Have a good day!” and “Korea.”
Below are five questions from Quora in December 2019. (You can click on the questions respectively to see what other Quorans had to say.)
Tumblr media
The first question from Quora is about one of the biggest holidays of South Korea, called Chuseok.
Question 1: What’s Chuseok in South Korea?
Chuseok (추석) is the traditional Korean holiday similar to “Fall Harvest” or “Thanksgiving” on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar on the full moon, or usually at the end of September. Chuseok is a family holiday when Koreans will eat many traditional foods and play traditional games with their family members. This year Chuseok will be observed from Wednesday, September 30 to Friday, October 2, 2020.
(My source: Public Holidays, December 2019)
The second question is about the English language in Korea.
Q2: Is English viewed as a “cool” language by Korean in South Korea?
Did you know that many Koreans learn Chinese and English? I think knowing English is viewed as “essential” for getting a good job in the future and one of the best ways to connect with the Western world’s economies and cultures.
Many Koreans listen to American pop music, watch western movies on Netflix, and wear English brands.
Students in South Korea must take an English exam on advanced vocabulary, grammar rules, and essays before they graduate. Because of this big English exam, many parents enroll their children into English after-school private  “hagwons” academies to learn more vocabulary and grammar rules.
In my personal opinion, I think many Koreans wish to know French, Spanish, Chinese, or Russian languages; however, English seems to be much more common and has the sentence forms as those languages.
The third question is about Disney’s popularity in Korea.
Q3: Is Disney popular in Korea?
Yes, Disney is popular. Koreans mostly love Disney movies, characters, princesses, merchandise, and of course, Disney Land is well-known too. However, there is no Disney amusement park or Disney Plus in Korea as of 2019.
Koreans love the Marvel movies, especially the Avengers: Endgame was super popular in 2019.
This week, many Korean children, elderlies, and families will definitely go watch Frozen 2 when it releases in movie theaters this week, and then sing all the songs.
The last questions are about Korean language translations.
Q4: How do you say “have a nice day” in South Korea?
The most popular way to say “have a nice day” in Korean is “좋은 하루 보내세요.”
좋은 (joh-eun) means good/nice
하루 (hah-roo) means a/one day
 보내세요 (bo-nae-se-yo) means to send/have
좋은 하루 보내세요!
(My Source: Talk to Me in Korean, December 2019)
Q5. What is the English translation of the word “Korea”?
I love answering this question.
Koreans call their country as 대한민국. A simpler and conversational form would be 한국 Hangook, which means the nation of Korea.
국 at the end of the country usually means “nation” or “country” so USA would be 미국, England is 영국, Thailand is 태국.
And 한국어 means the Korean nation language.
Hope this information was useful! 좋은 하루 보내세요!
What questions or comments do you have about South Korea?

[trans] 180617 - NICOLE full interview with ‘the star’ magazine june / july issue.
Q: it’s been so long, how have you been?
i’ve been quite busy, but it’s also been relaxing. it feels like i spent time for independent maturity. i traveled a lot; i went to japan, where i used to go for promotions, two or three times and i went to a backpacking trip to europe by myself.
Q: i’m curious about the ordinary daily life of girl jung yongjoo when she is not in front of a camera instead of NICOLE’s.
during my trip to europe, i realized a lot as i met and talked to various people. one was to take care of my body, so i eat mostly at home nowadays (to cook her own food). i made gomtang (korean soup dish) to kalgooksoo (korean noodles dish), and various korean food and italian food this year. this morning, i even woke up early to eat and cook meat. sometimes, i plan my meal for the week beforehand.
Q: is cooking your hobby?
yes, it started with baking, then korean food, and now italian food is fun (to cook). i want to try making them all. gomtang is the best dish i made! i tried it just once but even i admit that it was great. people that ate it also said, “it was really good!” i have fun inviting guests over and serving them food. i get energy from that sort of hangouts.
Q: i’ve been watching and i’m surprised by your figure. please share your secrets.
(my figure) has been okay up until last week but i ate way too much this week so it’s whatever now (laugh). I like to work out so i do pilates three times a week. i take a walk with my dogs at least 30 minutes every day.
Q: there are many fans who are curious because there hasn’t been a solo NICOLE album since the one in 2014.
i’m always thinking of a good time for a comeback. i think the image people usually associate with NICOLE is healthy and cute/bright sexy, so i think summer would be fitting. i want to try many songs. the kind of music that women can relate to and men would think, “NICOLE has that kind of charm”. i think it would come out next year but I’m not sure.
Q: where do you usually get your musical inspirations?
i look up many foreign artists. i like camila cabello and ariana grande’s music. i also like the voice of kehlani. i also have a strong ‘dance’ image so i tend to pursue pop music. but i like to listen to soulful country music, like from the artist tori kelly.
Q: i’m curious about NICOLE’s music that will be coming. what kind of story do you want to tell through your lyrics?
the side of a confident woman. i want to portray an energetic charm.
Q: you are from an idol group, what is the best part about being out of it?
it’s that my opinions get reflected a lot. i also feel the pressure because that means i am responsible. but i like being able to do things i want to try.
Q: on the contrary, when do you miss being an idol?
it’s less lonely, and it was good that i got breaks. for example, i had no breaks and had to keep on with the photoshoot today since i’m all by myself. when i was with my members, even if the wait time got dull, it was good because i got to rest for a bit. during that time, i would just chat, and 30 minutes to an hour would zoom by.
Q: there are many solo female artists nowadays, who’s the person that catches your eye?
chungha. from singing to mannerisms on stage, i think she is very good. she also seems relaxed. whenever i see staff members around me, i end up complimenting chungha. and I like to dance so seeing other artists who can dance well makes me happy (laugh).
Q: is there a hoobae idol group that gets your interest?
bts. they debuted when i was promoting as KARA. i thought they were cool back then as well. it was amazing to see them on the ellen degeneres show and billboard (music awards), which are shows i always watch when i’m in the states. it was cool to see them grow to become the hottest (group). i’ve been hooked to the song ‘anpanman’ from their recent album.
Q: i’m curious if you still keep in touch with KARA members.
of course, we constantly do. it was KARA’s 11th anniversary recently. it was weird that so much time has passed by already. time moves on too fast. it is starting to feel more so since this year. when we promoted as a group, gyuri and seungyeon unnies would always say “we are too tired” when we were dancing, and i thought, “they can’t be that tired”. but now i understand them. i’m sorry to the unnies (laugh). to think, “why couldn’t i understand how tired and exhausted the unnies were before,” i feel sorry.
Q: do you guys meet up often?
i see jiyoung when i go to japan. due to everybody’s schedules, we can’t meet up as much as we keep in contact.
Q: when you guys meet up, what do you guys usually talk about?
we talk about the old days, which means that time has passed a lot. we also talk much about the future, and about our work.
Q: if KARA gets together again, what kind of music do you want to present?
i think KARA’s image was associated with healthy energy. i want to showcase that kind of bright/cheerful music butiI also want to do the opposite, ballads. i want to gift the fans with a song that carries the message i wish to tell them. a while ago, i listened to an older song (of KARA) and i got emotional.
Q: what is NICOLE’s goal as a singer?
i want to showcase a NICOLE-esque stage. looking back, i had many inexperienced moments during my first solo. how do i say it, i was very anxious. but for my next album i want to show off a more natural side of me. it’s kind of funny to say that i have aged but you can’t ignore the fact that much time has passed so i became more relaxed. for my next album, i just hope not to feel small next to other artists (laugh). i want to pursue music that gives off energy and showcases my strong suits.
Q: other industry you want to try other than being an artist?
i didn’t have that much interest in acting before but these days i think it would be fun. i am a bit worried due to my korean accent. or it would be fun to go for a certificate test in whatever field.
Q: you got attention from variety shows, is there one you want to do?
instead of talk shows, i think variety shows that are more physical/active fits well with me. after going on a trip to europe by myself, i see the world a bit differently now. i used to have a personality that was like, if things didn’t go the way i planned, i couldn’t deal with it. but i am more at ease now. i feel like i got out of some kind of a pressure. i think i would be good in a travel related variety show.
Q: it’s been 11 years since your debut, you must have had some tough times, but what kept you driving to keep on working (as a celebrity)?
even though there were hard times, this occupation fits me well. I enjoy hard work. i also have fun with the progress i make with performances and such.
Q: three most memorable moments after your debut?
it’s hard to pick just 3. i remember when we performed at tokyo dome and the japan tour. i like to take pictures so i have many photos of the members and the staff. i have all their embarrassing/funny photos (laugh). for example, when we were on a diet, we ate cucumbers with mayo and ssamjang? (laugh) oh, and unnies (gyulham) would always go home after completing a schedule because they were too tired. but hara, jiyoung, and i, us three, would go get massages and hang out. i think i have a huge heart for memories and jung.
(ssamjang= mix of gochujang and Korean miso, so it’s a very strange food combo with mayo jung= there really isn’t a good English word for this but it’s like affection, feeling of attachment, and friendliness)
Q: what troubles you or what do you think about the most these days?
the thought that ‘i’m already in my late 20s’. it’s probably because i’m in my late 20’s even with the american age. time passes too fast. maybe it’s because spring was so short? it’s already summer.
Q: do you get lonely?
a lot. i was getting groceries by myself recently and my friend sent me a text message asking, ‘are you not lonely’. i got lonely immediately from that text. when that happens, i invite people and cook them food and talk together. or i read a lot. it makes me ease up.
Q: please leave a message to the fans who are waiting for you to make a comeback
i am sorry to my fans for not being able to promote continuously. one by one, I’m preparing to meet with you guys so please wait for me. i have matured over time, and i feel confident in showcasing the better side of me.
Q: lastly, what is NICOLE’s version of a happy life?
to feel calm. when I’m anxious i get negative thoughts so i want a steady life. i want to be always happy.

We can do it. It just hasn’t been done yet… I want to acknowledge every African American who has walked through those doors with the same desire to be that face that I have. I see you, I salute you and I appreciate you. You came in here, you knew the odds were against you, you knew it was going to be an uphill battle and you still fought and you fought like hell. Director of Medicine Belichick talks to his staff and is irate that instead of researching Vrabel-Tannehillitis, they brought him documents on Bunglaria. He punishes them by making them work on back cases and organizing them by bacteria count. In the operating room, time is not on the side of the staff as the patient is also suffering from Henry Syndrome where he rushed for 182 yards and a touchdown. To further accentuate the problems, Belichick finds out that Vrabel-Tennehillitis eats up the time left in the patient, despite his efforts to make time stand still. With time running out, Brady tries to push through his decline and makes a dangerous surgical operation. Sadly, the operation would turn to be fatal for the patient as Brady slips and cuts through vital organs and the scalpal is intercepted by the heart. The patient dies on the table and leaving both Brady and Belichick wondering if they still have what it takes in this new era of medicine. Will our dynamic duo return? find out next season...on St. Patswhere.” -Cyndi “That looks nothing like Tom Villard.” -Mike, anytime someone mentions Chris “Captain America” Evans as “America’s ass” “Okay, no no no no stop halt quit it cease desist. The culture.” -Chico “Go be bitter elsewhere.” -Hannah “Happy holidays ... and you’re welcome.” -Wayne Brady.... after telling us he’s not wearing underwear. === May our collective 2021 not suck as much as this year did. Seriously, I tried to burn my calendar and it wouldn’t burn.  Anyway, here’s to 2021... Come together, just think of tomorrow.

【INTERVIEW 】 ☆ JISIN x NU’ESTs individual interviews: 5 princes’ real personality? ~MINHYUN~ ☆
Lovely prince, handsome prince, naughty prince…Each 5 NU’EST members have their own charms. From here on every Tuesday and Friday, we'll share one by one the close ups! This week it's the thorough investigation of Minhyun's real personality!
Minhyun
Birthday: 1995/8/9
Height: 181 cm
Soft toned attractive vocals. A beautiful and lovely guy who is loved like a mother by the other members.
Tumblr media
Q. What were you like during your childhood?
I used to be a class committee member in elementary school. During the 3 years in junior highschool I was in the beautification committee where I've been in charge for cleaning the classes. Although it was pretty serious, I was a lively boy who liked to play with friends.
Q. Why did you decide to become a singer?
I liked listening to music and singing as well before . The reason why becoming a singer myself turned into an actually dream is, because of TVXQ who had their comeback with the album "MIROTIC" in 2008, and I saw them performing LOVE IN THE ICE on TV. That those 5 men each with a different personality can create such a wonderful harmony...I was moved and started to think that I also wanted to do that someday. Now, I'm glad I became the singer I am today.
Tumblr media
Q. Who of the members left the strongest impressions on the 1st meeting?
Minhyun: Should have been Aron. I was born in Busan and when I was selected as trainee and came to Seoul - JR , Baekho, and Ren were already trainees. At that time, I just came from Busan so it may have been a little disappointing. So, there was a part of me who was a bit worried due to my outward appearance thinking things such as "What if you are not cool enough compared to the other members?" But actually everyone's face was small too and I was happy they all were cool. After that, Aron from the USA came to Korea. I was really looking forward to seeing that "I'm from America." I imagined a gentleman, but Aron was like having his pants up to his stomach, wearing red converse and even the shoelaces were tightly tied. I thought that he was really from the American countryside (laughs).
Aron : It's a misunderstanding! I lived in L.A. but L.A. is warm in winter, so it doesn't snow. However, when I came to Korea I got surprised by the heavy snow.
Minhyun: It seemed that he wore all the clothes he brought with him that day.
Aron : Yes (Laughs). When I brought the clothes with me I did it for the time being, till I met Minhyun.
Q. What do you remember about when you 1st entered the dorm ?
Even now I still remember about the day I was scouted, and I went to Seoul. The other members had practiced a long time already so they took a day off and returned home. However, it seemed like the company told the members too late about the vacation, and Baekho was the only one who couln't return home ... he was sulking. I remember it was pretty awkward since I met Baekho for the 1st time on that day (laughs). But, even I went to the dorm for the 1st time that day, Baekho cooked dinner for me using my mom's homemade side dishes I brought along. That's why the 1st Impression I had of Baekho is very good. It was awkward but we got along well with the rice of the day.
Tumblr media
Q. The struggle about the dorm life?
The Toilet. Other than that it's fun! It's good as it keeps going like eating together, sleeping, etc while creating memories.
Q. Have you ever thought about giving up the dream of being a singer?
I've never thought about quitting but it's really painful for us not to get the results that match our effort, even if we do our very best and work hard to release an album. Apart from that, I'm enjoying the life of being a singer alot. Q. What's the most memorable episode since your debut? After all, our debut live is the most unforgettable. We practiced for about 1.5 years to 3 years, but isn't the debut live the moment when that dream comes true. Also it was the stage to show us to the public for the 1st time, so I still remember the throbbing sound (of my heart) at that time.
Tumblr media
Q. What's your favorite fashion style?
I like the simple style. But, if it's too simple, It's not idol like so I point out shoes, belts, bags and so on.
Q. What type of female do you like?
I liked short hair before but now I'm not particularly like a hairstyle. As an entertainer, I recently like Lee Seong-kyung.
Tumblr media
Q. What are you addicted to recently?
I'm very into watching drama! Recently I watched "Plus Nine Boys" which was pretty nice. Also, I'm watching "My lovely Girl" in which BI (RAIN) appears. Ah! "Discovery of Love" was also good!
Q. How did you feel when you heard about debuting in Japan ?
I heard about that we'll be working in Japan when we were in the practice room. During the break time the office's president came in suddenly, telling us "You will be active in Japan!" We used to like Japan for a long time , so listening to that when I was tired of practicing got me really exciting. I was happy.
Tumblr media
Q. What was the Impression you had when you came to Japan for the 1st time?
When I came to Japan for the 1st time, our Japanese company treated us delicious Japanese cuisine, and that kind act really touched me, besides I felt that many Japanese people are kind. Also, when going to other countries, there are times when the dishes don't match my taste, but Japanese food is very delicious! I thought that I could survive in Japan even if I got to have to work for a long time here from now (laughs) .
Q. Where will you go when you come to Japan?
The place I go to whenever I come to Japan is our favorite restaurant so I always go there at least once . Also, there was a time during holiday when I also went to Hakubuku and Shibuya with Baekho. It was a fun experience when we both rode the Japanese Train for the 1st time. If there's a chance, I want to go to the scrambled intersection in Shibuya as well. I can't stand places which are crowded by many people but there were various buildings which were shining brightly and were surrounded by a mysterious aura. I want to go there again.
Tumblr media
Q. Working in Japan is a great opportunity for the group, what do you think is the most meaningful?
We're Korean singers, but as Korean artists who want to extend K-POP to the outside of Korea, I think that Japan is that one step to make it. So, I would like to work harder for the future Japan activities and I would like to show our charms to all of our fans through various live shows.
Q. What kind of artist would you like to be in the future?
My motto is 「Become a person without scratches」, but in a different meaning from perfection, my goal is to be a straight person with no real weak spots/ cracks/chinks.
Tumblr media
Q. What kind of goals are you targeting as NU'EST?
Since we've never ranked number 1 in Korea, I'd like to shed tears of joy when we become 1st in a music program. Japan has more 'live' culture than South Korea, so we will hold a lot of lives and tours. Our goal is to become singers, who can enjoy the time together with their fans who are watching our live, as well as feel happy while seeing the fans who will sing and dance as we sing!

[170531] Go Away With ... Rap Monster (of BTS)
Fresh off a win at the Billboard Music Awards, the K-Pop band BTS (Bangtan Boys) is continuing its sold-out world tour, which included arena dates in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Based out of South Korea, BTS recently hit No. 1 on the Billboard Twitter Chart, beating out One Direction's Harry Styles and Niall Horan. Rap Monster (ne Nam-Joon Kim), 22, phoned us for this interview as the group headed to L.A. from Las Vegas. For more information on the seven-piece group, check out their website (http://bts.ibighit.com). BTS is also active on social media, including Twitter (https://twitter.com/BTS_twt, https://twitter.com/bts_bighit) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/bangtan.official).
Q. Was this your first trip to Las Vegas?
A. For me, it was the second time. For the other boys, it was the first time. I was last here in 2009 when I was 15. What I remember the most was the inside of the Bellagio. It was amazing. I had never seen a hotel like that before, where there was a whole world inside the hotel. It was beautiful. I got to see Cirque du Soleil's "O" show. It was so nice. I remember the night view of Vegas, which was tremendous. I remember all the lights and people having fun. I saw a lot of people drinking, which was shocking to me then (since I was so young).
Q. What did you do in Vegas this time?
A. (We went to see) Cirque du Soleil's "KA." After we won (our Billboard Award), we had a small party for just our band members and the staff. It was really nice.
Q. You speak like an American. I've heard that you taught yourself to speak English. Is that true?
A. Oh, thank you for saying that. I guess I taught myself, but really, it's my mother. My mom taught me, because she made me watch the news on CNN and BBC and that really helped. She also bought me some DVDs of the (sitcom) "Friends." I watched that over and over. I am more confident with my English now. In 2014, I knew my English was not so bad, but I had no confidence in talking directly to an English-speaking reporter. I had to do a short interview with, I think, Reuters from France. I was so nervous. I practiced memorizing three sentences for two hours. But, I think that these kinds of interviews make me develop a lot and that helps me. I like learning. I've been studying Japanese for years now, but it's really hard. It's definitely the next step for me to learn Japanese. I'm seriously studying it quite hard.
Q. Which childhood trip stands out for you?
A. I don't remember what my first trip was, but my parents always took me to areas around rivers in Korea. We would go camping and sleep outside in small tents. That is a great memory for me. I also studied in New Zealand for four months when I was 12 years old. It was exactly 125 days. I remember that because I wrote about it in my diary. Traveling helped with my education. I got to experience so many things.
Q. For newcomers who wanted to visit Korea, what would you suggest as must-sees?
A. I would recommend that you see at least two places that I love. You should definitely visit Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul. It's a traditional palace that was built many centuries ago and it is really beautiful. Also, I think you should definitely go walk by the Han River (in Seoul). It's a place I go to at least once a week.
Q. What kind of food do you look forward to eating on the road?
A. Besides Korean food? I don't think my answer is that interesting, but I always eat pasta and steak. (Laughs) My taste is kind of normal. I love to try the local food wherever I am. But I'm not that adventurous when it comes to eating. I prefer to be safe. I have failed at eating some daring food. (Laughs)
Q. And speaking of Korean food, how is the Korean food outside of Korea?
A. It's good. There are really good Korean restaurants in Brazil and the United States. They're everywhere. Our company is really good and thinks of our food tastes so much. They always bring us Korean food from restaurants wherever we go. So wherever we tour, I know that we will eat well. It's not that I don't love other food. I do! I'm just so used to Korean food that I need to eat it if I haven't had it for a while.
Q. What are your five favorite cities?
A. Wow, that's really hard to pick just five. But I love New York. The city means a lot to me. So much of the music I like comes from there. I love the views and the buildings. I just really love New York. I've only been there once, but I really loved Moscow in Russia. Tokyo. Berne (Switzerland). And, of course, Sao Paulo (Brazil). I've been there three times and love it so. The fans in Brazil -- they are passionate and fun and kind. We are so lucky because all our fans from around the world are great. We love all our fans from everywhere and they want us to visit them. We will try! They are really the best fans we could wish for.

DOs  & DON’Ts of Venice
Venice is undoubtedly one of the most mesmerizing cities in the world, and every year many people (perhaps too many - but I won’t discuss this point now) fly to the city to witness its beauty. But just like everything, there are some rules, some official and some unsaid, in order to enjoy the city.
Tumblr media
As a now former (*sobs*) student at the university of Venice, I’ve walked in the narrow alleys for three years, I’ve realized that tourists often don’t know how to deal with the city, and come quite unprepared. Venice is unique, no one can be fully prepare to experience the city, so I’m going to spill some secrets on how to enjoy the city and what should be avoided when you are here.
Tumblr media
DO: PACK LIGHT
I know, many of the tourists that overcrowd the city come from overseas or from the far East, and perhaps they visit multiple cities in Italy and Europe. Nevertheless, you should remember that Venice has many bridges, some of which have tiny steps, and doing them with heavy suitcases is definitely not easy. Plus, bear in mind that the vaporetto usually makes you pay for an extra ticket for large and heavy suitcases!
DON’T: WALK AROUND IN UNCOMFORTABLE SHOES
Wear tennis shoes/sneakers/however you want to call them for your feet’s sake. They are more practical and your legs are not going to be exhausted after only a few hours’ walk. I’m saying this because I’ve seen people (mostly Americans and British) walking around in flipflops, on the other hand, many Japanese and Korean girls walk around in high heeled sandals (nevertheless I admire the bravery of these girls, I didn’t even wear high heels on the way to my graduation, but I put them on when I got to the location!)
DO: GET LOST
Forget maps and guides, get lost and find the most unique sights of the cities just by wandering around. Sooner or later, you will end up in either St. Mark’s Square or on Rialto Bridge, so don’t worry!
Tumblr media
DON’T: STOP SUDDENLY WHEN WALKING
This is a personal plea. People on holiday in Venice tend to forget that it is a living city, and many are commuters and students who are probably rushing to catch the train or the bus. So, be kind and try to avoid stopping suddenly in the middle of the narrow streets, someone behind you may be late.
Also, when walking in large group, please avoid walking in rows of five and thus occupying the entire width of the tiny alleys. Again, think of your neighbour.
DO: TRY LOCAL FOOD AND RESTAURANTS
It is undoubtedly very romantic to drink a spritz near Rialto Bridge or in St. Mark’s Square, but the chances are that you’ re going to be overcharged for whatever you order from “central restaurants and bars”. Think about it, if you have already been to Venice: have you ever seen a local in those restaurants? I don’t think so. Also, I know Burger King is a cheap option for lunches and dinners, but ask yourselves: “When am I gonna eat a real Italian pasta?”. Carpe diem said a rather wise man.
My suggestion is to look at where locals go, ask them, and try those places: usually, they go to the bacaro, which is something like a pub but still it is not a pub. They are laid-back “pubs” that serve drinks (not only spritz!) and also offer you the cicchetti, which is the equivalent of the Spanish tapas, made with local products. Also, if you want to get very drunk (be careful not to end up in the canal, though), google “bacaro tour”, and you’ll find the best ones to try in Venice.
Tumblr media
DON’T: DIVE / BATHE IN THE CANAL
I though this was an obvious thing, something people with common sense do, but apparently many are attracted by the canal and have an unstoppable urge to bathe or even dive in it. The water is extremely polluted - ust think of how many boats and vaporetti pass everyday - and the water is populated by load of rats and all sorts of germs.
Recently people also though it would be funny to jump from the Calatrava bridge: besides being extremely dangerous - there’s loads of vaporetti in that area -,  you’re breaching the law and if they find you (very likely to be frank), you are going to be fined.
This also applies to the high tide (acqua alta).
Do yourself a favour, avoid any physical contact with the Gran Canal water.
DO: WAKE UP EARLY
Well, maybe not everyday, I’m not that crazy, I know you’re on holidays! However, if you want to see the landmarks and enjoy them even more, I’d suggest going to see them early in the morning. Being a commuter, it is something that unfortunately I’ve never done, but if you are in the city center, you can witness the beauty of a rather desert St. Mark’ Square when the sun is rising.
Tumblr media
Having said this, enjoy the city and be respectful: it’s an endangered gem we absolutely must take care of. If you are respectful, the city is going to live more.
If you have any q’s, feel free to drop me a message on here!

Sojourn Country Report: North Korea by Amy Ferris
Tumblr media
North Korea is a place that is very far away-not only physically, but culturally too. Sojourning to this far away land is sure to titillate any traveler yearning for something different, maybe even a little absurd. I say this because North Korea is a place that remains functionally influenced by the old Soviet era, with many parts of the capital city Pyongyang resembling Communist-era cities in Russia. Even more odd, is that this appearance goes along with a traditional Korean culture that unlike South Korea, hasn’t changed much in almost a century. As a matter of fact, there used to be huge portraits of Lenin and Marx hanging on the brutalist style buildings in Pyongyang. Now though, the pictures of those leaders are gone, leaving only the current leader (Kim Jong Un) to stake any claim in leading the country. Unfortunately, North Korea is a country infamous for its lack of human rights and closed borders, being nicknamed “The Hermit Kingdom”. Let’s take a closer look at some of the features of North Korea.
Tumblr media
The normal starting point for any tourist or sojourner travelling to North Korea is Pyongyang. This is North Korea’s showcase capital, and it is the largest and most developed city in the country. Pyongyang is a place where the most elite of North Koreans live, who in this country are usually the top scientists and government workers. These elite people usually hail from a long line of family members who have served the “leaders” faithfully or made great contributions to the betterment of the country. While you’re out on your closely-monitored tours around Pyongyang, keep in mind that the city and the people that you see there are not typical North Koreans. Many people in this country are very poor, and outside of Pyongyang the streets are poorly maintained, and most people live in more traditional style Korean flats. While in Pyongyang, you may notice the sporadic blackouts. This happens because the city relies on coal for power, and their economy isn’t strong, so they don’t have enough resources to keep it reliable. When the power goes out, relax and notice that the North Koreans around you just keep working like nothing happened. They’re used to it, and they are probably not allowed to mention it, as this makes the country- well, the “leader” look bad. I don’t advise making a big deal out of issues like this. I actually don’t advise making a big deal out of anything you see there at all. Anyone visiting North Korea should really just keep their opinions to themselves and mind their proverbial “P’s and Q’s”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, onward now to North Korea’s language and culture. This country, like other Eastern Asian countries is homogeneous. This means that the overwhelming majority of people in North Korea are ethnically Korean. They all speak Hangul, which is what the Korean Language is called. Interestingly, even though the North and South Koreas have been separated for quite some time, the language is relatively the same. Time does change things slowly though, and North Korea has been left behind in time. Their mannerisms and dialects are archaic compared to South Korean Hangul. Imagine if a time-travelling American businessman from the 1940’s appeared and started banging on about how swell things were here. I think that’s how outdated the North Koreans sound to other non-North Korean Hangul speakers. Since Hangul is a language that functions much like Japanese, it is a context-based language.
Tumblr media
Basic customs and culture in North Korea are traditional in a lot of ways. Women in North Korea are not typically considered leaders, and they’re not equal to men. The women are closer to women from the American 1940’s or 50’s, as they are encouraged to be teachers or housewives. Women outside the city also do other jobs suitable for females such as farming and cleaning public spaces. There are women in higher positions such as scientists and Professors though, and jobs like this are not banned for them. Men in North Korea are mostly relegated to “manly” jobs like construction and sculpting, farming too of course. Gender doesn’t matter at all in one field though- the military. North Korea has a huge military and most citizens are required to complete long enlistments. In America, the normal enlistment contract for all services is usually four years for people who want to join, but in North Korea that enlistment requirement can be ten years long.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
North Koreans aren’t religious, as the “leader” forbids the worshiping of anyone but him or his family. The closest thing to a religion is the concept of “Juche”, or “self -reliance” in North Korea. This is the propaganda that the first president Kim Il Sung came up with to convince the people to accept being trapped in this country, and to believe that the whole world is against them. Anyway, I am sure that there are North Korean people who believe in different things of course, but they are not allowed to show it, and they can only talk about it with people they trust.
Tumblr media
Entertainment in North Korea has become its own phenomenon. Hearkening back to the old Soviet State in places like Russia and Ukraine, there is only one state-run news station on TV, featuring “The Pink Lady”. She is a news reporter who can be found loudly proclaiming the soon-to-be defeat of all opposition to North Korea while images of ballistic rockets launch behind her on the green screen. Radio is just the same, often only playing patriotic war songs and the required minute-to-minute praising of the “leader”. Unfortunately, many people around the world are unaware of the artistic abilities of the North Korean people in both performance, art and film. I suggest trying to attend the Arirang festival which is held in the biggest stadium in the world in Pyongyang. Also, there is a home-done film festival tradition now in North Korea as well, as the animation techniques and filmography in North Korea is actually pretty good.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lastly, but surely not least- a quick word about food. North Korean is a country riddled with poverty and famine. They struggle to grow enough food for themselves, but they are very generous when it comes to foreign visitors. This is due to a generally East Asian cultural obligation to take care of their guests well, and also to show (pretend) that they have more than enough food to go around. Almost everything that happens here has a political charge to it, food being no exception. Regardless, the most typical kinds of food eaten in North Korea is rice, pickled vegetables and hot peppers like what is in kimchi, various soups and kimbap rolls. There is a chance for receiving some mystery meat as well, as animals such as dog and horse is not a taboo food to eat in North Korea. Try your best to be polite and don’t waste food in front of people who may not have eaten much that day.

Five More Questions about Korea on Quora by the Korea-Curious
Welcome back to the third post of the Quora Questions Series where I find and answer five random and recent questions from the Q&A website Quora.
Any questions about “Does Korea have…?” are interesting to me, so here’s a question about stores in Korea selling milk.
Tumblr media
Question 1. Do stores in South Korea sell milk?
Yes, they do. In Korean schools, students can also order milk cartons to their classrooms. Korean milk is usually high in fats and calories, so the children can grow well.
Koreans also eat cereal for breakfast or snacks sometimes.
Also, in supermarkets and convenience stores, you could see flavored milk being sold: Banana milk, Strawberry milk, chocolate milk, melon milk, almond milk, and other flavors.
Tumblr media
The next question is about Korea’s recent economy and companies.
Q2. How did South Korea become so rich? South Korean companies are on fire. This is a surprise given that in 1960 South Korea was an extremely poor country.
Today South Korea is 11th for the largest economy.
“South Korea’s economic development cannot be discussed without mentioning chaebol, the country’s family-run conglomerates, such as Samsung, LG, and Hyundai.
You know Samsung today for its smartphones; Hyundai for its cars, LG for its high-tech refrigerators. But these companies started off in the mid-20th century selling basic goods like sugar and wool (Samsung), plastics (LG) and rice (Hyundai).“ (My Source: KoreaExpose website, December 2019)
Chaebols built the first highway connecting Seoul to Busan, and later worked with Japanese and American companies of imports and exports for factory and apartment construction, food, and other products.
“South Koreans strived not only for personal success but for the advancement of the companies they worked for and, ultimately, for their motherland.“
How well do you know K-pop? The next question is about a popular K-pop girl group, GFriend.
Q3. Is GFriend popular in South Korea?
Honestly and personally I didn’t know about the group GFriend since I don’t often listen to Kpop.
But yes, they are. Maybe not so famous internationally, but they are signed to Big Hit Entertainment in July 2019. They’re one of the top groups in Korea in this past decade.
It seems GFriend cares more for their image, growth musically, and their “Buddy” fan group, than the charts anyway.
GFriend history: GFriend is a six-member South Korean girl group formed by Source Music in 2015. The group consists of Sowon, Yerin, Eunha, Yuju, SinB, and Umji. They made their debut with the EP Season of Glass on January 15, 2015. (My Source: KProfiles, December 2019)
The next question is about vaccines needed for Korea.
Q4. Do you need vaccinations for South Korea?
For traveling and visiting South Korea for less than 90 days depends on where you live or where you are coming from. To be safe, you should ask your doctor, travel agents, or your government official travel website.
If you’re from the UK or US, then no vaccinations are required to enter South Korea. (Because the US or UK citizens should already have them, such as Tetanus, Hepatitis B, Rabies, Measles, Typhoid, Chickenpox, Shingles, Pneumonia, Influenza, Rubella.). (My sources: Gov.uk official website and Korea4expats, December 2019)
The last question from Quora is for tourist women visiting Korea.
Q5. How should a woman tourist dress in South Korea?
You can wear your normal everyday clothing and your normal style.
Since tourists typically visit the popular cities Seoul and Busan, it doesn’t really matter what you wear as long as you are respectful and considerate, of course. Koreans see many foreigners in their everyday clothing and casual clothing in the subways or restaurants, palaces or any places.
Today, most Koreans and foreigners usually dress up in business suits, or business casual, street-style, modern Western-style clothing.
Don’t wear anything too overly tight or too low (no cleavage). And wear socks if you are visiting a sit-down type of restaurant or visiting a Korean’s home since you should take off your shoes inside.
What questions or comments do you have about South Korea?
If you found any mistakes in this, please contact me!
Thank you for reading the Quora Questions Series!

Atlanta: Best places to eat, drink and play
Tumblr media
Atlanta (CNN) — Downtown Atlanta is home to a host of densely packed attractions — the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, the Center for Civil and Human Rights, the College Football Hall of Fame and more.
But the city’s real flavor comes from its neighborhoods, and any visit to Atlanta should skew heavy on food and beverage outings, as this guide does.
So while fans in town for the Super Bowl would do well to check out what the area around the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium has to offer, they should also explore a bit beyond downtown.
Grant Park
Zoo Atlanta is home to more than 1,500 animals, including several giant pandas.
One of Atlanta’s most interesting and storied spots, Historic Oakland Cemetery (248 Oakland Ave) opened in 1850, making it the city’s oldest public park.
The graves serve as resting places and reminders of Atlanta’s layered history. Jewish, Confederate and African American grounds are all part of its 48 acres. Mayors, former slaves, athletes and authors are all buried here.
The elaborate Victorian cemetery carries its dual role as a park into the modern era. Picnickers and dog-walkers are welcome, and Oakland Cemetery is host to a whole calendar of events from music festivals to Halloween tours. Tickets for various tours can be purchased in advance.
Memorial Drive near the cemetery runs along the border of the Grant Park neighborhood to Cabbagetown and Reynoldstown, where Petit Chou (662 Memorial Dr) and Home grown (968 Memorial Dr) are top spots for breakfast or brunch.
In the evening, Golden Eagle (904 Memorial Dr) serves up expertly crafted cocktails and bites in a knock-your-socks-off space — think plush, retro hunting lodge.
For a kid-friendly outing, Zoo Atlanta (800 Cherokee Ave), located in 131-acre Grant Park, is a crowd-pleaser. The zoo is one of only four in the US to house giant pandas.
Old Fourth Ward
Tumblr media
Martin Luther King Jr. was born in this house, right, on Auburn Avenue.

Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birth Home (501 Auburn Ave) is located about a mile from downtown.
The National Park Service offers ranger-led tours that are first-come, first-served and limited to 15 people. Getting to the visitor center early in the morning to sign up is key.
A block south of the MLK birth home, Atlanta’s young (and youngish) gather along Edgewood Avenue.
Among its eclectic bars: “Nerdy dive bar” with arcade games Joystick Gamebar (427 Edgewood Ave) and Sister Louisa’s Church of the Living Room and Ping Pong Emporium (466 Edgewood Ave) — Church, for short — where adult beverages meet ping pong, a church organ and all manner of irreverent religious art.
Also on Edgewood is Staplehouse (541 Edgewood Ave), named America’s best new restaurant by Bon Appetit in 2016.
Tumblr media
The Eastside Trail of the Atlanta BeltLine connects several intown neighborhoods.

About a mile and half north, Ponce City Market is a beacon of adaptive-reuse development and premium dining and retail.
Casual chef-driven eateries — fish shack, burger joint, fried chicken, tacos, ramen, doughnuts — dominate the market’s Food Hall, located in the rehabbed 1920s Sears, Roebuck & Co. warehouse.
Ponce City Market sits along the Atlanta BeltLine, a 22-mile urban trail that, when finished, will connect 45 intown neighborhoods. This stretch, the Eastside Trail, is the place to people watch and get a sense of Atlanta’s rapid redevelopment.
A few blocks down Ponce, in the Poncey-Highland neighborhood, the Clermont Lounge (789 Ponce De Leon Ave NE) is a you-have-to-see-it-to-understand Atlanta institution where a 60-something stripper named Blondie crushes PBR cans with her breasts.
Upstairs, the trendy boutique Hotel Clermont recently opened, complete with a sultry lobby bar and a fun rooftop watering hole with great views of the city.
Midtown
The “Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors” exhibit has been a sold-out success in Atlanta.
In Midtown, the fabulous Fox Theatre (660 Peachtree St), has hosted musical acts, theater performances, movies and more in its ornate Moorish- and Egyptian-influenced auditorium since 1929. Ticketed tours of the space can be booked in advance.
The Center for Puppetry Arts (1404 Spring St) is the largest American nonprofit dedicated solely to puppet theater. There’s a museum with a Jim Henson Collection and a Global Collection, rotating performances (for kids and adults), workshops and other programs.
The High Museum of Art (1280 Peachtree St) is wrapping up its blockbuster showing of “Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors.”
Advance tickets are sold out, but for the patient and optimistic visitor, the museum offers 100 walk-up tickets to the Kusama exhibition each day. Lines for those tickets begin several hours before the museum opens. There’s also a cache of tickets going on sale on February 5 for the final week of the exhibition (February 11-17).
Nearby, 200-plus acre Piedmont Park is Atlanta’s biggest city park and a hub for exercisers, meanderers and a host of festivals and events.
Hungry now? Empire State South (999 Peachtree St) serves creative takes on Southern cuisine, while Lure (1106 Crescent Ave) is a stylish seafood restaurant.
East Atlanta Village
Tumblr media
Banshee is an upscale restaurant addition to the no-frills East Atlanta neighborhood.
Courtesy Banshee
Southeast of downtown, East Atlanta Village is home to a bevy of casual bars (and food, too) at the intersection of Flat Shoals and Glenwood avenues.
The Earl (488 Flat Shoals Ave) offers consistently good bar food, a winning dive-bar atmosphere and a full schedule of local and national bands in the back room. (Take note: smoking is allowed inside.)
Down the block, the menu at gastro-pub Argosy (470 Flat Shoals Ave) ranges from hot chicken to charred octopus, plus a long list of craft beers.
Across the street and down an alley, Gaja (491 Flat Shoals Ave) offers contemporary takes on Korean classics alongside cocktails, soju shots and so on.
Mary’s (1287 Glenwood Ave) is often voted Atlanta’s best gay bar. Tuesday night karaoke is popular at the 21+ spot.
East Atlanta’s newest and swankiest dining option, Banshee (1271 Glenwood Ave) showcases locally sourced ingredients, plus creative cocktails from its arresting turquoise and indigo bar.
West End
The historic West End neighborhood is a classic Atlanta story — an area that started out as a transportation hub (a trolley stop), hit hard times but is bouncing back strong now.
One thing driving that resurgence is the West End Trail portion of the BeltLine. And for those who find the Eastside portion too crowded, you might find a little more elbow room here.
For a classic soul-food experience, the no-frills Q Time delivers (1120 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd). You can fill up on large portions of delicious Southern favorites such as turnip greens, black-eyed peas, fried chicken and peach cobbler.
If that’s too heavy, the opposite end of the food spectrum is nearby at Tassili’s Raw Reality Cafe (1059 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd), with a menu of raw vegan delights such as Moroccan Couscous or their Original Kale, a wrap with kale salad, avocado and tomato.
West End also has two sightseeing attractions worth a visit:
The Hammond House Museum (503 Peeples St) is an excellent place to learn more about the contributions of visual artists of African descent. The museum has 18 works by influential 20th-century artist Romare Bearden.
The Wren’s Nest (1050 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd) is an Queen Anne architectural pleasure and the former home of Southern newspaper writer and fiction author Joel Chandler Harris of “Uncle Remus” fame. It’s a close-up look at how an upper-middle class family lived at the end of the 19th century.
West Midtown
Howell Mill Road and the surrounding area is a hot spot for shopping and dining.
Long a hub for furniture, fabric and all things design, the Westside has filled in with restaurants, boutiques and chain stores.
Bacchanalia (1460 Ellsworth Industrial Blvd), opened in 1993 by chefs/owners Anne Quatrano and Clifford Harrison, has been at the top of Atlanta’s fine dining scene for decades.
Entertainmentwise, The Painted Duck (976 Brady Ave) offers duck pin bowling in a glamorous venue also equipped with shuffleboard, horse shoes, air hockey, etc.
And in an area teeming with craft cocktails, Northside Tavern (1058 Howell Mill Road) is the spot for a bottle of beer, lives blues and a game of pool. This smoky dive bar dates back to 1972, and it’s holding its own as new buildings rise up around it.
CNN’s Forrest Brown contributed to this story.

Their album WINGS, released on October 10 of 2016, clmbed to the number 26 on Billboard’s 200. Check out what they told us.

q: what exactly is your job?
“i eat, drink, and make comments my mother thinks are appropriate.”
q: it’s rare you give interviews like this, so forgive me if i ask some boring questions. how did you get here? what got you to this point?
“that’s a bit vague. where do you want me to start? conception? the debate over whether the chicken or the egg came first?”
q: i mean your family history. where did you grow up, etc.
“my parents immigrated here from south korea i would say about two or three years before i was born? the details there get fuzzy. but yeah—they settled down and began working towards the ‘american dream.’ they opened up a restaurant and i was born a little after that.”
q: did your family owning a restaurant make you want to go into culinary arts?
“no. not at all. besides my parents always pressed me to be look higher. they had careers before moving to the states to begin with-my dad taught science and my mother worked teaching kids how to read, so they’ve always had high expectations. it’s only because of language that they ended up opening a restaurant when they got here.”
q: so what were you doing before becoming a chef?
“i was in college for journalism. i didn’t like it, but it was decent because you could always change fields a little bit.”
q: what were your college days like? were you a party kind of guy or were you studying on saturday nights?
“a mixture of both, i would say. i would go out with friends sometimes and try and make time to study too. my parents were always looking for my grades so i kind of had to keep them up. my roommate had a stick up his ass too, so it wasn’t like i had girls coming over or getting drunk in the dorm real often either.”
q: sounds like you had a nice college experience.
“it was hell. i hated it, actually. there was nothing nice about being stuck in some college with only handful of non white kids, because quite a few of them were just, a fucking shit show. a lot of them had some racist shit to say when they got real drunk, so that’s half the reason i didn’t spend tons of time partying. my roommate was actually half the reason i managed to stay for three years. he was the real deal.”
q: did you have a close relationship with your roommate?
“i wouldn’t say close, it was more like i was always getting on his nerves and he just tolerated me. i was a real asshole back in college, so i’m always wondering how he put up with me. he’s korean too, so we had that in common at least. it was nice to at least go back to the dorm and have somebody kind of understand the pressure you were under or some of the social problems on campus. he actually managed to be the first asian head of one of our clubs too, so i was really proud of him. he didn’t really give a shit about what others had to say and just did what he wanted, and that’s why he’s so successful now.”
q: when did you realize you wanted to drop out of college?
“midway through my third year. i just burnt out. i didn’t want to be there, i started really hating journalism and deadlines, i just wanted out. i didn’t have a backup plan or anything, but i decided once that semester was out for the summer, i was leaving.”
q: how did you tell your parents?
“i waited until the very end of spring break to tell them. i wanted to say it the first day i was back, but they were so happy to see me and my sister, who was in her first year of college. and i didn’t even have a backup plan, so i just kept quiet.
during the break my sister and i mostly just helped out at the restaurant-i worked in the back with my mom cooking. it’s gonna sound corny but it was so relaxing! i never cooked often but i had some skills from my mom, and i had to learn how to make up stuff in college because you know, most of us were living off of mcdonalds, old takeout and ramen noodles. when i was back there, i just didn’t feel as pressured, even when my mom started nagging me about being slow. i think i realized then i wanted to do something with food, so i made the split decision to go to culinary school.
i told them the night i realized that. we were closing up and i came from behind the kitchen and just blurted out, ‘i’mdroppingoutofcollegeandgoingtoculinaryschool’ in one breath.”
q: how did they take it?
they weren’t happy, let me tell you. i sat through a long hour plus of silence with them just staring at me, and then my dad finally just said, ‘at least it won’t be as expensive as the college you’re going to now.’ i don’t know why he kind of accepted it because it was clear he was disappointed, but i was a pretty stubborn kid, so they kind of just let it go? to this day i never understood really why they went so easy on me, but i’m glad they just let me do it.”
q: so the rest after that is history?
“pretty much. i finished the semester, dropped out, and applied for culinary school. i spent my whole summer reading stupid cookbooks and watching cooking shows to improve my skills, and i spent as much time in the kitchen with my mom, who kind of became my personal trainer. she would wake me up early in the mornings, take me to the restaurant, point to a big ass bag of onions and tell me to get chopping. i hated it at the time, but it came in handy later.
finished culinary school with no problems, got a job on the line in a couple restaurants and gradually worked my way up. i was thirty when i got my first job as head chef and ended up leaving that year when a friend of a friend asked me about doing a documentary about food around the world and cultures and people attached to them, and i said yes.”
q: that documentary turned into a show for you.
“yeah, it did. it was crazy, i got up one day and i got a call from a network like, ‘hey, we want to take your documentary and turn it into a show’ and i was just looking around like am i being punk’d? and i was hungover when i got the call so i was sure somebody was just fucking around, but it was the real deal.”
q: why do you think your show is so popular now?
“honesty. nobody wants to see some smiley chef running around the world trying to make their versions of dishes with no cultural background or fucking it up completley. i think it’s the fact that i go into another country and let the locals make my path for me, because i get to sit in their homes and they tell me stories, and all of that really connects around a dinner table. i think it’s also for the sake of representation. i would want to think any kid from a different country, or who’s a first generation kid like me, can look on tv and see their home country being represented in a good light too.”
q: what’s next for you? you’ve accomplished a lot at thirty two.
“no clue. i’ll let you know when i get that figured out.”
q: earlier in the interview you mentioned that your former roommate is very successful now. are you still in contact with him?
“that nerd? yeah, of course. we still talk and occasionally meet up—i’m surprised you don’t know who it is, i always mention him on twitter for the pure enjoyment of embarrassment. he’s ashamed to be friends with me, but i know it’s love deep down.”
q: do you still help out at your parent’s restaurant?
“do i have a choice? everytime i walk in the door my mom shoves me in the kitchen, points to a stack of vegetables and tells me to get chopping.”
q: sounds like she hasn’t changed.
“she hasn’t, and i love her for it. keeps me grounded.”
