Nola Rose's Big Birthday Poll

This is Nola Rose:

She is my best girl, my babylove, my beloved little butt and my most precious evil eel, and in one week, she will be one year old!

Recently, I ordered her an Embark test, in the hopes of one day reuniting her with one of her siblings or other family members, and to maybe get an idea of what other health problems I could expect in the future.

I was not expecting any surprises on the breed front, because the rescue had Nola's original paperwork from her "breeders," indicating her mama was a brown Cocker Spaniel named Spruce, and her daddy was a registered blenheim Cavalier King Charles named Fellow. AND YET.

...and 7.2% something I did not expect at all. Full honesty, I don't see it, but maybe it explains a few things about her?

ANYWAY. For Nola's impending birthday, I thought it might be fun to survey other people, to see their best guesses at the third breed in Nola's genetic cocktail. I've pulled all poll options from an article on the most common breeds for Cavalier crosses, and additional photos and possible clues to her ancestry below the read more.

Starting from the top, BABY PHOTOS, of Nola Rose and the two sisters the rescue picked up from the puppy mill auction.

That photo of Nola on the left was the photo in her Petfinder listing, the one I saw by accident in the middle of the night that made me fall in love with her immediately. I honestly have no idea how she was the last of her siblings left to be adopted, but I will never not be desperately grateful.

Maybe it was because she had the dramatic eyebrows and mutton chops of a civil war general, I can't say. In more recent photos, you can see that the eyebrows and bushy cheeks have subsided, but the insanely luxurious eyelashes remain.

Her color has darkened immensely since I brought her home in August. She used to be a much lighter sable, and fully blonde on the top of her head.

Speaking of which, sable isn't a breed standard color in either Cavaliers or Cockers, and her ridiculously long chin beard (which you won't see in any of her photos because I have her groomer trim it off) doesn't appear in those breeds either. Coincidence?

At just shy of a year, she's hopefully maxed out at 18 pounds, and she's unbelievably leggy, with an outrageously long body and the deep chest of a racing dog. (She's also fast as hell, good god.)

Her fur is unbelievably silky, save for a coarser ruff over her shoulders and trailing down her spine, and her cocker-fluff booty feathers. Her back end was trimmed down substantially before the above photo. Her tail might be the softest part of her, and I love how it's both silky and curly.

Behaviorally... she's. Something.

Nola has the strongest prey drive of any dog I've ever met, including that time we babysat a rat terrier mix named Ella The Killer. Nola's little heart is so full of murder that I have to close curtains so she won't hurt herself trying to break through the windows to get at bunnies. She is a grand champion at "breaking the necks" of her toys by way of viciously shaking them.

Nola likes to burrow! She tunnels under blankets, rugs and throw pillows, and her favorite way to sit On A People is between our legs when we're in recliners. She likes to feel confined. She also deeply enjoys being held, and she asks to be picked up by my father at least once a day, even tho she's perfectly capable of jumping into his lap by herself now.

She LOVES to lie in the sun until her little body is radioactively hot and her mouth smells like hot rotting garbage, which is actually extremely weird, because she's our second sable dog in a row to have solar-powered halitosis and I'm not above begging people for answers. If you have a dog that has especially stinky breath after they've been in the sun, indoors or out, please talk to me because I'm dying for answers.

Ahem. What else.

Nola is disturbingly smart, and has no concept of obedience, but an excellent grasp of the concept of naughtiness. She knows exactly which items in the house are Forbidden, and which ones will get our attention the quickest if she takes or otherwise threatens them. She also knows the names of most of her toys and can distinguish between them when she's feeling cooperative.

Her favorite way to wake me up when it's time for work is to jump up on my bed, pounce on me, and oh-so-gently bite the tip of my nose. (I know I shouldn't encourage it but it's so sweet I may die.)

She investigates new people by aggressively sniffing their eyes.

She is my tiny daughter with every disease, but despite her allergies, and her asthma, and her megaesophagus, and her subluxated hip, she is the happiest, most delightful little being in all the world.

Okay so a dog bit a dad when he was around 9, right? It was a Pomeranian and my dad thought it was cute and tried to touch it as soon as he saw it. So my dad didn't go near a dog his life.

Well, for a long time he didn't. My uncle(dad's older brother) got my parents a dog for their wedding(overkill, I know). It was a shih-tzu poodle cross from what I know. So anyway, the dog like really loved my mom. So he(the dog) would rush into the room and jump onto the bed whenever my parents were in the room together and on the bed chilling and my dad apparently used to get as far away as he could.

So somehow Dog #1 got really sick. Didn't get all his shots. It was bad. So my dad(the car was in repairs at the time) held the dog and cycled all the way to the vet. Which would be the first time my dad ever touched a dog in decades (the dog died though).

Then came in Dog #2. My cousin let in some strays and insisted they keep them. So anyway, 1 stray turned to 2 then 4. The puppy, that's our doggy 2, was like. Hated. She stayed far away from near the house, to the garage where she stayed, mostly, as it was near the back gates. The other dogs would eat the food my dad bought for her. And literally attack her. It was basically hell. My dad used to bring dog #2 food at night, around 10pm, and the noons and you know. The likes. She ran away soon enough. The other dog died of old age(mean little shit, he was always angry as hell, tried to bite me)

Dog #3 was my buddy. Like um yes. Dad used to tolerate her the most. Didn't mind her, sleeping under the sofas where he sat(mm, dog #2 only sat under people she liked, which just happened to be me, mostly, and my parents sometimes). Dad even greeted her when he saw her (yes, he said hello to a dog) so anyway, she died a while ago, early 2020. My dad never patted her.

And then came our beloved Dog #4. Dumb ass extraordinare. Always hungry. Still intelligent. Very floof. Love him. Did I mention my dad actually tried to touch him?(he didn't bite! because prince is a good dogg and also not a stranger) And my dad tried to tell me to not touch him behind the ears or on the head (he very stiffly pats dog 4 on the back) like I thought you never patted a dog in less than half a century. stop.

Dog 4 is very much alive. Will send pic soon.

The First Drawing to post for this New Decade, and it's the Best of the Movies that I've seen in the Cinemas, and one I've heard of for a while. So here are some Favorite Characters of mine that were fun to Draw, along with the Reviews for the Films.

Missing Link - My First movie to see in the Cinemas of this Year, and it's another Laika Classic, and despite being a Box Office flop, It did receive some very Good Reviews from Critics, and even my Foodtown Boss' Grandchildren saw the Film on a Thursday(?) and they Loved it, so I figured I give this film a watch, and I was amazed at the Final result, An Amazing sight to see that some Folks out there don't know what their Missing. It was directed by Chris Butler, who was co-Director of Laika's other projects 'ParaNorman', and it had an Amazing cast such as Mr. Zach Galifianakis (Felix of 'Bob's Burgers' & Lego Joker of 'the Lego Batman Movie'), Zoe Saldana(Avatar, Gaurdians of the Galaxy), & Hugh Jackman (Van Helsing & Wolverine of the live-Action 'X-Men' films). And once again, the Folks of Laika really did some good Work & Commitment in Making this Film, especially when I loved the Film's settings & Landscaping, and the Action Sequences are Phenomenal, especially in those Action sequences when the Ship rotates with the People in it when it was Struck with the Storm's Big Wave, and How Suspenseful it was when the Characters are dangled into Ice blocks or big icicles, and how shocking on how the Villains' defeat of Lord Piggot-Dunceby, his neurotic right-hand man Mr. Collick, and Bounty Hunter Willard Stenk were killed in Cold Blood, cuz I knew that that Ice Bridge in the Film was gonna Break in a Sequence. Plus there were some Cute Humor in the Film as well, especially after when Mr. Link/Susan Roared at a Dog during a Bar Fight, and after a Moment of Silence, the Dog just attacked on of his Men and the Bar Fight continues (that's when most kids in the Auditorium laughed at that part), and how Susan literally thrown some Objects over the Wall. And I'm always fascinated with Cryptozoology creatures such as Bigfoot, Abominable Snowmen, & the Loch Ness Monster, even when they make me think about that 1970's film entitled 'the Mysterious Monsters'. And even if the film was Distributed by United Artists (a Subsidiary of MGM I suppose), it's kinda Weird now now that it was released on DVD and Blu-Ray from 20th Century Fox, even after Disney's Conquest, but can we still call ML a Non-Disney film, even if some MGM films are being released by FOX under a Contract?

Godzilla: King of the Monsters - Well me and my dad certainly love Giant Monster movies when we were Young, and I certainly remember renting every Godzilla movie on VHS back when Blockbuster was still around, and we certainly enjoyed that one 2014 'Godzilla' movie, unlike the 1998 Matthew Broderick one, so we decided to give this new kaiju movie 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' a viewing pleasure, not to be confused with the 1956 Americanized 'Gojira' movie starring Raymond Burr. And i gotta say that it was an Epic Thrill-ride of our Lives, even the monsters we were familiar with were Amazing, Godzilla being all greatly Huge and Buffed-up as always in the USA, Rodan looking a-little Sinister lookin', Mothra playing out like the original 'Mothra' movie, starting off as a larva hatching from her Egg, then Evolving into a beautiful Butterfly-like Moth, then King Ghidorah was so Menacing in this one, and being like Lizzie in 'Rampage', he was such a "Pain-in-the-Ass" character, even once being Nicknamed 'Monster Zero', either that Nickname was also used in Japan, or used for one of Ghidorah's old film appearances in the US, that was double-billed with 'War of the Gargantuas'. I even like how they referenced some stuff from Warner Bros. & Legendary Films' 'Kong: Skull Island', as that films along with the 2014 Godzilla, and this Film are all in the same Universe, Monsterverse that is. And how surprising that there are other Kaijus in this Movie that I'm not even certainly familiar about, like that one Arachnid-like featured titan, or the Giant Ape Body/Mammoth Trunk beast, or another Muto(?), and I am wondering if the Demolished Boston at the end of the movie is gonna be the new 'Monster Island'. The human characters were good, I mostly like every member on the character Dr. Mark Russell's team, they seem likable, and the Cast was great, even after looking at the film's Poster befor we went inside the theater, I saw the familiar name of Thomas Middleditch, the same man who did voices in 'Captain Underpants' & 'Bob's Burgers', doing a Live-action role, and while writing this review, I've discovered some other actress who starred in this film include Sally Hawkins, who starred in the previous 2014 Godzilla movie, and also in Guillermo del Toro's 'the Shape of Water, and the woman playing the daughter in this film, also played in 'Stranger Things' as Eleven. And also I love on how the film as a Newer Version of Godzilla's approach-like film that was used in the old films, and even the end Credits have Cover version of Blue Oyester Cult's classic hit 'Godzilla'. And one of the Film's story plot is Fascinating, like how this Earth was once ruled by Giant Titans, until us small Humans have taken over while most of those Titans went Extinct and hiding in the Earth's Spirit.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 - Well, Illumination has done it again, as it Amuses me once before with 'the Grinch', 'Despicable Me 2', 'the Secret Life of Pets', & 'Sing', they have released a Sequel to my Favorite Secret Life of Pets movie that I saw in theaters back in 2016, and now have it on DVD. And when I heard that the Original voice for Max got replaced with a Guy I know of who has a Great Career in Animation, I was like "Whuuut?", but even after reading what Happened to that one Guy, i figured I'd give this Movie a Watch, since I'll like Patton even more. And I gotta say, this Sequel does have some Cute and Lovable moments in the Film, and those Subplots in the Film are Wonderful, leading up to a Story on how to save a White Tiger cub from a Wicked Ringmaster (voiced by Funny voice man, Mr. Nick Kroll(Sausage Party, Sing, Captain Underpants). And Snowball is more luvable in this one as he is in the first Film (Kevin Hart is so Wonderful!), even teaming up with a Cute/Funny character such as Daisy, a Shih Tzu voiced by Tiffany Haddish (who just did a guest voice role in 'Bob's Burgers'). Also with a Cute story on how Max & Duke's owner fall in Love with a Fun Gentleman and have a Kid together, and I love how the Dogs raised the Boy up, by helping him to Crawl & walk, and have Good Animal Instincts, which makes me think that what if my Sister & her Husband had a Pet Puppy that could be a good a Good Companion to my Little Layla niece. And some of the Parts in the Film have Good humor in it, like did I just heard a Cow say "Rat Turd" in front of an auditorium full of Young children? Plus Mr. Harrison Ford(Han Solo in 'Star Wars' & Indiana Jones) was great as a character named Rooster, who tries to Man/Brave up Max and a few characters, after Max has devoted his Life to Little Liam, which led to the Funny Collar on his head. And I'd figured there was something Familiar about that Young Lamb Cotton's voice in the Movie, as he is voiced by Mr. Sean Giambrone, the voice of Jeff in 'Clarence' & Shermy in the 'Adventure Time' series Finale.

Abominable - Well, Dreamworks has done it again, a new film from a Creative Team was made and about to be released soon, and when I saw the Previews of it for the First time, I thought I wasn't too interested in it, especially with the humorous Blueberry gag parts. But after a while, and see that if it looked cuter as Dreamworks' previous film 'Home(2015)', I thought I give it a go, and hopefully it look way better than that one Weird-Looking film in 1995 called 'to catch a Yeti' starring Meatloaf. But for the 'Abominable' film, since the Movie was getting Good Feedback from Reviewers and Viewers, I was Lucky to watch the Film for myself. The Characters were Cute and Funny, almost like the ones from 'Home', especially with Ethnic Protagonists. And the settings and Designs of Asia in the Open Fields, Forests, and Cities are really nice, wishing I could visit and/or live there. And the Great story is like an E.T. Extra Terrestrial thing, expect that the Heroes goes with the Creatures on an Adventure of a lifetime to bring back the Creature to his Beloved Family that they Tried to protect from any threats what's-so-ever. And there are some Amazing plot Twist among the Villainous Characters, like just when you thought the villain was actually an elderly Man who has been hunting Mythical creatures for rewards, but it turns out that the True Villain was actually a Nerdy Woman who thought was a seemingly-gentle Scientist just doing what's right for the World, who almost Barely looks like a geeky version of Kari McKeen of Disney/Pixar's 'the Incredibles', and when she let down her Hair, she may look like a Devious version of Merida of Disney/Pixar's 'Brave'. The Effects in the Movie is Super Nice & Super Awesome, especially in the Yeti's Humming effects, some Action Sequences, and that one moment when the Heroine's Father's Violin broke, the Yeti fixes it by using his own Hair for the String replacements, and I know from that Moment, with Yi's Musical skills and the Yeti's Powers combined, and when the Hearts are Full, and the Heavens are listening, Magic is bound to happen. And for the one other part when the Heroes are Gazing into the Stars, they say that the Stars could be our Ancestors watching over us, and that if we don't see any Stars in the Sky, there will be always there for us, almost like even if for some Folks lost their Love ones, they will always be there, even if we can't see them. But I'm glad i enjoyed the Movie, and I know that some Tween kid group enjoyed it as well, laughing at some Funny Parts in which i enjoyed, sometimes with the Woofing Snakes, "WOOF, there it is, WOOF, there it is".

the Addams Family - Well, a another Fantastic new Animated feature has been made, and it's based off of what I remember from my Childhood, cuz I do remember watching the early 1990's Live-Action movies of the Creepy Family starrring Christopher Lloyd and Christina Ricci, before I knew who some of the Actors were, and I remember the Animated Hanna-Barbera Kooky series on Cartoon Network a while back, even making a Spooky Guest appearance in 'the New Scooby-Doo Movies', but I haven't watched much of their old Ookie Live-action series, and the Family I'm talking about is 'the Addams Family'. And I've read a while back that an Animated CGI feature is gonna be released soon, and I knew back there that that would be interesting for me to see, so I've waited several months for the to be released in Cinemas, and I finally got a chance to do so. It was a Fun and Entertaining movie, and surprising it was made Directed and made by the same team who did the 2016 R-rated Animated film 'Sausage Party' starring Seth Rogan & Kristen Wiig, and the Character designs for the Film were to be based off the old design from the Original Addams Family comics in the old days, and with modern help from Mr. Craig Kellman(Hotel Transylvania, Madagascar). And the voice cast is amazing, we got Mr. Nick Kroll(Captain Underpants) voicing Uncle Fester, Chloe Grace Moretz(Kick-Ass) as Wednesday Addams, Finn Wilfhard(IT, "Beep, Beep, Richie") as Pugsley Addams, Charlize Theron(Kubo and the Two Strings) as Morticia Addams, Bette Midler(Hocus Pocus) as Grandmama, Snoop Dogg as Cousin Itt, Elsie Fisher(Despicable Me) as Parker Needler, even the film's co-director Mr. Conrad Vernon as Lurch ("YYYOOOOOOUUUUUUU RRRAAAAANNNGGGG?!", LOL!!!), a priest that presides over Gomez and Mortica's wedding, the spirit that haunted the abandoned asylum that Gomez and Morticia move into (who often threatened them to get out, much to the family's delight, which i find those Parts to be entirely Hilarious, even in the Theater's Booming Stereo), and Dr. Flambe, a Devil-like relative of the Addams family with fire-like abilities. And the Film's Story is very cute, even with the Film's Opening Scenes on the Origin story of the Addams Family and their "Creative Differences" with other Societies, and it gives me some Good comparisons with Sony's 'Hotel Transylvania' as Creepy Creatures who have lived through the Centuries and Years soon get into Modern times and how other people dealt with Beings like the Monsters of HT and the Addams Family and their Clan. And it would be nice if my Parents were watching the Film with me in the Theaters, cuz during the Film's Ending, me and the people in the Auditorium got a chance to sing-along with the Film's Theme Song, and everyone was Snapping their Fingers to the tune. So If you wanna celebrate Halloween in a Great and Wonderful way, I think that this film is for you, and for all you Goth, Emo, and Young-at-Heart Artists out their who would love a Creepy Treat, and just can't wait to get it on DVD. Klaus - To come clear, I've heard about this movie, and I've even seen some Pencil Tests of it way back then, but I've actually never seen the whole thing, or catch it in a Selected Theater, but I really did see the Film's Trailer. And sorry if I didn't catch 'IT: Chapter 2' like I did with the first one, But I'm hoping o see some more clips of it online. And I Never had interest in seeing the 2019 'Child's Play', though I still like Ms. Aubrey Plaza & Mr. Mark Hamill. And I had no interest in seeing 'the Angry Birds Movie 2' since I'm never a Big Fan of Thurop Van Orman's creativity. And lastly, I didn't felt like seeing the 'Spies in Disguise' movie ever since Disney's Horrible Conquest of the whole 20th Century Fox media.

Though you and Freddy had known each other for about four years, you hadn't had him over to your apartment once. One afternoon, you finally decided it was time to change that, so you invited him over to do homework.

"Now, Freddy, remember; my dogs are extremely excitable, so I'll hold them back until you can sit down." You wanted to prepare Freddy for meeting your beloved puppies.

Your best friend just chuckled as you walked down the street together. "Didn't you say they're Shih Tzus? Those things are tiny, aren't they?"

"They are small, yes. But they've got a lot of energy, so I want to be careful."

A few minutes later, you stopped at the door to your apartment. The door was unlocked, so you knew your mom was home, probably making cookies since she loved baking and you knew she would want to make cookies for your friend. As soon as you and Freddy walked in, Maggie came running over to say hello. You scooped her up before she could barrel into Freddy, leading him over to the couch in the living room and letting him sit down before releasing Maggie. She excitedly sniffed at him and wagged her tail while you called to your mom, letting her know you were home and asking where Charlie was.

While Freddy loving played with Maggie on the couch, you walked into your bedroom to dig Charlie out from under your blankets. You brought him back to the living room, where he practically leapt out of your arms to greet your best friend. Freddy's laugh was pure and happy, and yours was quite similar as you sat on the couch together, playing with your dogs and talking to them in that special voice reserved for animals and small children.

"I don't what you were so worried about, Y/N. Your dogs are so sweet!" After half an hour, Maggie curled up on Freddy's lap and Charlie snuggled with you while you both did homework and your mom made cookies.

Despite your concern, your puppies were actually relatively calm and nip at Freddy or try to climb all over him. They were as sweet as could be. Freddy loved them, and you knew he'd want to come over more often now.

Chapter 24 - A pot of tea

Nara was going to kill, or at least throw Alyse into the pond of tortoises in the garden when she saw the Shih Tzu puppy again. But when her guard told her the puppy belonged to Qi Fei, she was glad she brought it back. The next day she brought the puppy to Qi Fei and it turned out to be more useful than she expected.

Qi Fei lost her usual elegant composure the moment she saw the puppy in Nara’s arms. She ran towards Nara and lifted the puppy, immediately held it tight in her arms. She was laughing and crying at the same time while she cuddled the puppy, uttering “Beibei” over and over as the puppy barked joyously at her.

When she finally remembered the noble lady and her attendant standing awkwardly in the middle of the living room, she walked over promptly and thanked Nara, grasping the noble lady’s hand tightly. When Nara told her Beibei was injured when she found it, and how she nursed it back to health, Qi Fei had to let the puppy onto the floor and pull Nara into a tight hug.

So Qi Fei found her beloved puppy, Nara finally got the attention she wanted, but not everybody was happy in that living room. Gasha was irked to see her mistress’s overt fondness of the new noble lady. She had been serving the consort for years but she had never held her hand, let alone a hug. Grace was miffed that Nara lied about taking care of Beibei and loving it when she would not even enter her room all those time when the poor puppy was nursing its injured leg on her bed.

But of course she did not confront Nara. Instead, she bemoaned to Alyse that evening, babbled heatedly about how fake Nara looked when she played with Beibei in Qi Fei’s living room, how superficial her frown was when she told Qi Fei how she could not bear to part with the puppy. However it vexed her even more when she realised her cousin was not listening the whole time, lost in some dreamy world of her own. She realised that when she saw that silly smile Alyse had. Alyse would not tell her what had been occupying her mind, but Grace reckoned it had to do with the day she brought Beibei to the guard house and did not return till the next morning. And she would confidently predict a probability of nine over ten that it was Irgen who was occupying Alyse’s mind.

There was one more person who was unhappy too. Of course Ji Fei got wind of the touching moment Qi Fei and the new noble lady shared in the living room. The same noble lady who had been conspicuously trying to please her with regular visits and small gifts. She also heard about the afternoon snacks the two women had been sharing, and heard even more about Nara when Qi Fei could not stop praising her during dinners. About how smart and knowledgeable the noble lady was, and of course how much she loved Beibei as much as her.

So one morning when Nara was paying her respect again, Ji Fei did not offer her a seat like she usually would. She just snorted when Nara greeted her.

“My Lady, did I do something wrong and displeased you?” Nara bowed her head, looking at the floor.

“Oh no you didn’t. But I think I must be the one who has done something wrong. Which is why you decided to serve that bitch Qi Fei instead.” Ji Fei huffed as she observed her nails.

“No, my Lady! I didn’t! You’re the only one I would serve with the whole of my heart!” Nara placed her tightened fist over her left chest, her voice filled with panicky.

“Didn’t you just become her new favourite after you returned that stupid dog to her?”

“I did returned the dog to her after I happened to find it, but that was all I did! I suppose she is only nice to me because of that dog.”

Standing farther away, Grace nodded to herself silently. That was correct. That was the only thing Nara did with the puppy.

“So you’re not switching side?” Ji Fei finally looked up from her nails.

“No, and I never will! I will only serve you, my Lady!” Nara looked at Ji Fei earnestly.

“Hmm. Take a seat.” Ji Fei gestured to the seat on the other side of the small table on her side. Nara did as she was told, wondering what was on Ji Fei’s mind as she went back to observing her recently manicured long nails.

Just as Nara was preparing more excuses in her mind in case Ji Fei asked about the time she spent with Qi Fei again, Ji Fei broke the silence. “If you want me to trust you again, you’ll have to do something for me.”

“I’ll do anything for you, my Lady.”

“Bring this back.” Ji Fei took a small pack out of her gown, neatly wrapped in a white cloth, and placed it on the small table.

“Thank you, my Lady.” Nara bowed slightly and quickly kept it in her gown.

“It’s not for you. It’s pu’er leaves mixed with dry longan flesh. I want you to brew it and bring it to Qi Fei.” Ji Fei instructed nonchalantly.

Nara was stunned. It was clear as a bell what Ji Fei was trying to do. Everybody knew that Qi Fei could not eat any sweet food due to her illness, which was why the kitchen would prepare savoury snacks for her instead of the usual sweets. More importantly, Qi Fei knew that Nara was aware of her illness. Now Ji Fei wanted Nara to bring a pot of sweet tea to Qi Fei. And it was not an instruction which Nara could disobey if she wished to get back in Ji Fei’s good books..

“Yes, my Lady. I will bring it to her tomorrow.” Nara promised. And Grace was not surprised at all. The Emperor had already shifted all his attention from Qi Fei to Ji Fei, especially when Qi Fei was all broody after she lost her dog. If Nara had to choose a side, she would be smart enough to choose Ji Fei.

The next morning, Nara instructed Grace to brew the pot of tea and carry it with her to pay respect to Qi Fei. Grace knew from the description of Qi Fei’s illness that she was most probably diabetic. And while Qi Fei should indeed stay away from sweet food, Grace also knew that a pot of longan tea would not kill her. Thus she did as she was told, with the conscience that as long as she was not helping Nara to kill someone.

Nara and Grace reached the consorts’ house like usual, Nara greeted Qi Fei with a warm smile and Qi Fei affectionately asked her to take the seat next to her. After Nara took her seat, she beckoned Grace over.

“My Lady, the weather is getting cold so I’ve asked Geleishiyi to brew you a pot of tea.” Nara told Qi Fei with her warmest tone while she took over the pot and poured the tea into a cup.

“Oh you shouldn’t have, my dear. I can always ask Gasha to brew me tea.” Qi Fei accepted the cup joyously.

“I just wanted to do something for you, my Lady. I hope this tea is good enough for you though.” Nara gazed intently at Qi Fei, or more specifically, the cup of longan tea she was holding.

“Oh I’m sure it’ll be nice.” Qi Fei smiled and finally brought the cup to her lips. The moment she had a sip, Qi Fei’s warm smile was extinguished. She gave Nara a hard and stern stare as she stood up and threw the porcelain cup onto the floor, breaking it into pieces. “How dare you serve me this!”

With a loud gasp, Nara quickly stood up from her seat and bowed her head low. “May I know, what’s wrong with the tea, my Lady?”

“What’s wrong with the tea?!” Qi Fei snorted, her finger pointed to the pot of tea still sitting on the table. “You knew I can’t eat sweet food and yet you serve me longan tea?!”

“No! No it can’t be!” Nara shook her head ardently. “I handed a pack of top grade white peony to Geleishiyi, not some longan tea!”

“You can have a sip yourself if you don’t believe me!” Qi Fei growled, crossing her hands over her chest furiously.

“Of course I believe you, my Lady!”

Grace cursed “oh crap” silently when she heard what Nara said about the tea, and more importantly, the mention of her name. But she was not prepared for what Nara intended to do when she saw the noble lady strode over. Nara raised her hand and gave Grace a slap which echoed in the living room. “How dare you steal from me, you useless bitch!” Nara screamed into Grace’s face. “What did you do with the white peony I handed to you?!”

“What…” Grace was going to ask Nara what the hell she was doing when Nara gave her another slap.

“I’ve treated you so well, and this is how you repay me?!” Nara yelled even louder and when she raised her hand again, Qi Fei held it and stopped her.

“Enough, Nara.” Qi Fei gazed at Nara sternly but the fury in her eyes was gone.

“I’m so sorry, my Lady.” Nara sniffed, tears welled up in her eyes.

“It’s fine.” Qi Fei took a glance at the petrified Grace with her hand holding on to a red and swollen left cheek. “I’m sure she has learnt her lesson.”

“I’m so sorry… this is not supposed to happen…”

“No, I’m sorry for yelling at you.” Qi Fei heaved a soft sigh and patted Nara’s hand in hers. “Why don’t you go back and have a rest?”

“I’ll brew you the white peony personally tomorrow.” Nara nodded.

“I look forward to it.” Qi Fei smiled warmly at Nara again.

A Reflective Essay

     I will never forget the day we decided to adopt a new puppy. My siblings and I begged and pleaded with our parents to allow us to buy the puppy off a Facebook page, we all agreed that the puppy would be our collective Christmas gift as a family. As soon as our parents conceded to our nonstop begging, all of us chipped in a portion of our individual allowances to buy her before Christmas Day arrived. I came home from school to find a small puppy around the size of my hand, her fur was furry and pure white, she had short legs, she would wobble around our living room trying to get closer to us. She was a mix between a toy poodle and a shih tzu, which meant she was very small. After much scrutiny, we unanimously decided to name her Martha, after the Beatle's song "Martha My Dear" , the song where Paul McCartney wrote about his own beloved dog.

     After two wonderful years with Martha and her antics of chewing on wires and shoes, picking fights with dogs five times her size, waking us up in the middle of the night because she wanted to cuddle and horsing around with our three other dogs, she started getting sick. After awhile, she had become lethargic, wouldn't eat or drink any water, lay in a corner on her own and she began vomiting a lot. At first we thought it was just something she had ate, so we didn't pay it much mind. Things started to become worrying when this continued for almost a week. We brought her to see the veterinarian and a few hours later, Martha was diagnosed with Infectious Canine Hepatitis, a disease that caused her liver and kidneys to deteriorate at rapid speeds. She had to be admitted and monitored very closely. The veterinarians told us that so far, no dogs afflicted with this disease have survived.

     A few days after her admission, my parents were told that the infection had spread to her brain, and she began to have seizures. My parents told us that they had to make the worst decision every dog owner is terrified of. They had no other choice but to put Martha to sleep. The vets said she was already in a lot of pain, and she needed to rest. They gave her a proper funeral, and I was later on told that my dad sobbed the hardest among everyone else. These days, I swear Martha still lives her life vicariously through our other dogs. Sometimes, as I walk down the stairs I think that Martha will still be waiting to greet me with her wagging tail and beady eyes. A part of me wants to believe that she's still confined in the hospital, and that she'll be coming home any second now. My heart aches when I realize that she's no longer with us. And yet, after all this I still hold on to the faith that she's in a much better place, with all the treats her little heart could want, running around the infinite expanse of lush fields, playing fetch with Jesus. Someday, I'll see my angel again and she'll greet me at the golden gates of Heaven.

In my family, the holiday season means lots of food, lots of grocery-store runs, and lots of dogs underfoot. For the last several years, we have celebrated the holidays at my sister’s place. She has two little dogs, a yappy (but adorable) old Bichon and a cranky (but adorable) old Shih Tzu. Since my parents live about six hours north of the city we three kids are in, they bring along their two senior dogs. 2. Decide: All dogs inside or all dogs outside?

I was reluctant to add to the chaos already happening in the house, and as a result I wasn’t being fair to my dog or my husband. When my guys first arrived, I put poor GhostBuster in the backyard until we could figure out how to integrate our ungainly Lab mix into the crowded kitchen without him moving about like a bull in a china shop.

GhostBuster is never left outside on his own at home, so he was quickly doing his World’s Saddest Dog act. I knew I wasn’t being fair, and my husband encouraged me to either bring GhostBuster inside or let the other dogs out. We proceeded with an indoor meet-and-greet before a group pee break.

3. Introduce your dog to new dogs with caution

GhostBuster knows my sister’s dogs pretty well. They’ve gone for lots of walks together and hung out in the backyard a bunch of times. My parents’ dogs, on the other hand, didn’t know GhostBuster at all — and since Pagan the Jack Russell Terrier has been known to start scraps with my siblings’ dogs, a slow and steady introduction was needed.

When we first brought GhostBuster into the kitchen, I stood right beside him while the other dogs all circled around my feet. To Carlos and Sophie, he was old news, but Pagan and her BFF Rags were leery of this new giant before them.

My mom kept a close eye on her little Pagan as the five dogs sniffed around each other. GhostBuster was not a hit with Pagan, who growled at him — twice. My mom and I calmly separated the two, but didn’t move them very far from each other. It was obvious that Pagan was intimidated by GhostBuster, so we just kept him at a distance by until she got used to him.

By the time the humans were moving on to pumpkin pie, Pagan had begrudgingly accepted GhostBuster as a fellow member of this temporary Thanksgiving pack.

4. Don’t be a helicopter pet parent

When the turkey came out of the oven, the dogs were all very excited to do a little (safe!) taste testing of the Thanksgiving treats, and they congregated in the kitchen to get their collective beg on. My mom was giving each of the dogs a little bit of turkey, but when she got to GhostBuster, I butted in.

“It’s better if you hold it flat in your hand instead of dropping it,” I told her.

I knew I was being ridiculous, but GhostBuster’s (one and only) biting episode was still fresh in my mind, so I also tried to school my dad on the best way to deliver treats.

“Stop hovering!” my husband scolded me. “They’ve given treats to dogs before! He’s fine.”

My husband was right. My parents have probably delivered hundreds of thousands of treats and table scraps into the mouths of many dogs in their lifetimes, and GhostBuster was being a perfect gentleman, sitting and waiting for these nice people to feed him.

Once I backed off a bit and stopped trying to control every interaction, GhostBuster was able to relax and enjoy the holiday a little more.

5. Know when to call it a night

Just like holidays are stressful and overwhelming for some people (obviously, myself included), they can be overwhelming for dogs.

My husband and I were very, very proud of GhostBuster for how well he did for his first multi-dog Thanksgiving. We left Thanksgiving dinner rather early and took him on a nice, relaxing evening walk to calm down from the hectic holiday.

In my family, the holiday season means lots of food, lots of grocery-store runs, and lots of dogs underfoot. For the last several years, we have celebrated the holidays at my sister’s place. She has two little dogs, a yappy (but adorable) old Bichon and a cranky (but adorable) old Shih Tzu. Since my parents live about six hours north of the city we three kids are in, they bring along their two senior dogs. A couple of years ago, my brother got himself a pair of Miniature Schnauzer puppies, which increased the holiday guest list to six dogs, eight adults, and one human child — a multi-dog Thanksgiving.

My husband and I were the only ones who weren’t bringing a dog to holiday get-togethers, but that changed in October when our rescue Lab-mix GhostBuster attended his first (Canadian) Thanksgiving dinner.

There were already four smaller dogs (including one who is blind and another who is deaf) crowding into my sister’s kitchen when GhostBuster arrived, but somehow our Dogsgiving wasn’t really that chaotic.

I’m pretty sure I was more stressed out than all of the dogs combined. Here are five tips — based on our recent experience — for keeping calm with an extended family of dogs under the table.
