recommendations for “local” spots in PR? im going over springbreak and im so excited!!! (anything fun do/ explore besides el yunque and san juan?)

omg i love this questionnnn!!!!

so if you get the chance: RENT. A. CAR. There are so many amazing spots in PR but because the public transportation system here might as well be nonexistent, you need a car to get to most of them. so here is the list of my personal fave spots that you need a car for: (dw i will include another list of things that are more local to san juan and also one more thing)

- Playa Sucia, Cabo Rojo: gorgeous beach, i spent a lot of time there in college. you have to walk a bit to get to the actual beach but it’s so worth it. you can also hike up the cliffs surrounding the beach which is so fun and beautiful. and you can go up to the lighthouse which has the most amazing view.

- Crash Boat beach, Aguadilla: another beach, another college me spot. it’s just really cool, people are always playing music, there’s a big ol pier. just very awesome.

- Toro Verde Adventure Park: ZIPLINE. VERY BIG ZIPLINE THAT TAKES YOU 95 MPH. I believe it’s the longest in the US and the third longest in the entire world. the view while you’re on it is unlike anything i have ever seen before 10/10, taking my bf there this weekend.

- Surfing: my fave surf spots are Domes Beach in Rincon. Jobos Beach in Isabela. and La Punta in San Juan. You can search up surf lessons in these beaches and you’ll get a bunch of instructors.

-La Parguera: Bioluminescent bay. It’s so gorgeous and so worth it

- Piñones: Long strip of road with different spots you can get out in and go to the beach in. It’s littered with a bunch of typical puertorican food stands like fried shit that we love. if you want the real PR experience, go on a weekend

Now for some more local San Juan area things to do:

- Again, Surfing: literally just google surf lessons in san juan and a bunch will pop up

- Distrito T-Mobile: Has a bunch of restaurants and live music, definitely a good spot to just kinda hang out in. There’s a huge arcade there as well as one of my fav restaurants: La Central by Mario Pagan (get the truffle butter on the steak)

-La Placita: Drinks. Legal age is 18 here so if you want to PARTY, go here.

-Calle Loiza: same as la placita but more locals go here methinks

-The Place: my fav burger place ever, it’s in Condado. Build your own burger w really good ingredients 10/10

-Pirilo: amazing pizza place. it’s in old san juan so this might be a bit of a cop out but it’s really good regardless.

-Casa Bacardi: Rum factory, you can take a tour and it’s pretty cool

-Paddle Boarding: you can go paddle boarding in Condado Lagoon, if you’re lucky you might even get to see manatees or turtles!!!

- Metropol: my favorite restaurant. they have a bunch of locations but you can’t go wrong with any of them. typical puertorican and cuban food. fucking delicious i can never get enough. (get the sorullitos you won’t regret it.)

Now for the something extra:

-Culebra and Vieques: You can either take a plane or a ferry to either of these islands. They are the most beautiful islands i have ever seen. Very remote so little to no cell service but genuinely so so so worth it because the stars look so amazing at night it’s like nothing i have ever seen before. also Vieques has a bioluminescent beach as well :)

ik some of these are kind of touristy things and not necessarily local but they are genuinely some of my favorite things to do and i will always always always recommend to do at least one of them.

If you google Discover Puerto Rico, that website is amazing and gives you like a million things to do 10/10

➥ summary: Rio and her friend are catching up with one another over some drinks when suddenly Rio remembers that her son will be back with some friends and not only that, she hasn’t started dinner yet! No problem here especially when her friend offers their help in the kitchen

➥ a/n: I total wasn’t sure how long you wanted this but hopefully this isn’t that bad :)

The late afternoon sun bathed the city of New York in a warm glow as (y/n), a vibrant and spirited Puerto Rican woman, made her way to her friend Rio Morales' apartment. The anticipation of spending time with her close friend filled her heart with joy. As she knocked on the door, she could already hear Rio's cheerful voice calling her in.

"(y/n), mi amiga! Come on in!" Rio greeted her with a warm hug, her radiant smile instantly infectious.

(y/n) returned the hug, feeling the comfort of their friendship enveloping her. "It's so good to see you, Rio! How have you been?"

They settled down in the cozy living room, sharing laughter and stories over a couple of drinks. They had known each other since their college days and had been through thick and thin together. As they caught up on each other's lives, (y/n) noticed the twinkle in Rio's eyes whenever she mentioned her son, Miles.

"I just remembered, Miles will be over later with some friends of his later this evening," Rio suddenly exclaimed. "I should get started on dinner!"

(y/n) smirked playfully, raising her drink in a toast. "Well, two hands are better than one, girl. I'll gladly help you with dinner."

Rio's face lit up with gratitude. "You're a lifesaver! I knew I could count on you. Let's get started then!"

They headed to the kitchen, donning aprons and working as a seamless team. As they chopped vegetables and sizzled spices, their banter and laughter filled the kitchen, turning the task of cooking into a joyful experience.

"I have to say, (y/n), your recipes are always a hit," Rio commented as they prepared a savory rice dish.

"Well, that's because I learned from the best – my abuela," (y/n) replied, her eyes sparkling with pride.

As the aroma of the meal filled the air, they set the table and awaited the arrival of Miles and his friends. The anticipation of a fun-filled evening together warmed their hearts.

Before long, the door opened, and in walked Miles, a young man with an easygoing charm that mirrored his mother's. He was accompanied by a group of friends, all chatting and laughing as they made themselves at home.

"(y/n)! I didn't know you'd be here!" Miles exclaimed, giving her a warm hug. "This is awesome!"

"Surprise!" (y/n) laughed, delighted to see the joy in Miles' eyes. "Your mom invited me over to help with dinner. She knew it'd be a blast with both of us in the kitchen."

Appearance: Gin is 5'3 feet tall, pretty skinny, has tanned skin and brown eyes along with puffy brown hair that is dyed half blue, half light pink that is pushed back by a headband and the bangs are dyed a soft lavender color. She wears a red tank top with slightly baggy bluish gray pants and black boots. She wears fingerless black, leather gloves, has a light reddish brown purse that she always carries with a bisexual pride flag pin with a star in the middle.

Background: Gin is a young girl that originated from Puerto Rico and moved to Norrisville when she was 12 or 13, starting to study at Norrisville High in 8th grade. She has a mother named Miranda and an 11 year old sister named Amy, they own a family business which is a bakery. Gin's specialty are brownies. She loves drawing, writing, gossiping, music and singing, especially songs from shows that she likes. She is semi-[popular, a 'floater' if you will. Floaters are the kids that don’t really have one specific group of kids they hang out with and are generally shy but are also polite and friendly. They tend to have a lot of friends and get along with most everyone. The only group she doesn't float around would be Bash's. She has great academic intellect and tries not to brag about it but subconsciously does so. She is rather touchy with friends but avoids physical contact with strangers like the plague. She lived in Puerto Rico for a whole lot of years before moving to Norrisville in 9th grade where she was reunited with her long time friend Gin Rose, who she had met in Puerto Rico and had studied with her in the same school. Her parents are named Ava and Alexander while her older and younger twin sisters are named Abigail and Alanis. Her mother used to be a pretty well known singer back in the day but after having the triplets, she retired and became a gardener while her father was a lawyer. They have a fat cat named Gordis who sometimes gets out of the house and follows the triplets to school. She is mostly distant with most people, a bit of a loner you might say, but she acts rather lovely with those who are close to her. She likes to listen to music, train in boxing, gossip, dance, overall just perform like her mother once did, and stump people with legal facts that she learned from her father. He wears a dark yellow turtle neck, black pants and brown Uggs. He always wears eyeliner and a bit of eyeshadow, plus some lipgloss, he likes to stay pretty like that.

Background: Daniel is a young boy that originated from Portugal, having been born into a rather wealthy family. Helen loved in Portugal until he was 9 and then moved to Shanghai and lived there until he was 12 and then moved to Norrisville where he now is studying at in Norrisville High. His mom is Portuguese while his dad is from China, their names being Reina and Kai. He has three other siblings, an older sister named Victoria, a twin younger sister named Diane and a younger brother named Eugene. Daniel’s mother is a model and sometimes helps out Gin’s mother with her bakery rather often, so Daniel and Gin hung out together and became friends due to so. Other than that, Reina has a little shop where she sells handmade things while Kai is a retired military officer and now a stay at home dad. Daniel and his siblings were trained in self defense by their father, just in case anything was to happen, although Daniel is too scared to actually hurt anyone. Daniel is shy and usually nervous but can be excited when trying out stuff he likes with his friends, sometimes getting flustered when given affection but always appreciates it. He likes makeup, fashion, modeling, watching sappy and sad movies, cooking and baking and hanging out with his friends. He may have a crush on someone.

Foundations

I was born in brooklyn, New york and was raised in a pentecostal church. The church was all I knew up until the age of 15. I went to a Spanish speaking church but at home we spoke english. I went to an english speaking school and i grew up in a tiny community, majority of my friends were caribbean a tiny bit were puerto rican. But i didn't even know i was puertorican until i was the age of 7. I knew I was Hispanic of some kind because the church I went to spoke Spanish and my parents would speak about me or stuff they didn't want me to know in Spanish, but I didn't really know who I was. It wasn't until the week on puerto rican weekend i had asked my father where were we from, and as he told me i had got excited. Not just because I was Puerto rican but because I was part of the culture. So that same weekend I asked my parents to buy me all of the flags and the shirts and from then on I wanted to embrace who I was.

   My church was made up of mostly Dominican people, so the Spanish I learned there was of Dominican teachings. It was never full of sentences but it was words and what were things called. Most people believe spanish is spanish, but it truly differs based on your origin. I always asked my parents to translate the service, but it's hard to stay focused on what was being said when you are asked to translate, So they translated when they could. I grew up singing in spanish and learning how to read in spanish but ask me anything head on i couldn't speak back to you. Everyone always told me you should speak Spanish, everyone from church down to my family members, but my response was always that my parents never taught or spoke to me in spanish. My family always said it was an excuse but they never spoke to me in Spanish either. What everyone didn't understand was that Spanish in my household was used for arguments, talking about important stuff, for chisme(gossip), or speaking about me. One day as i was ending highschool, i had asked my parents “why didn't they teach me spanish?”. Their response was “they didn't see it as an importance, because my schooling was in english”, but here i am 24 years old with a child and still unable to speak fluently in spanish. Sure I can understand and read it, but to have a conversation with my daughter? Is out of the question. 

   I was born into church , and as for my siblings they started at the age of 11 yrs and 15 yrs of age. My siblings knew where they came from long before I was born, because my mothers parents, who were from Puerto Rico, were still alive in their childhood. They died before I was born so I never had the opportunity. According to my sibling my grandparents spoke to them in spanish and about puerto rico since they were born. My fathers parents I barely saw, my dad had a semi distant relationship with them, until they got older. My siblings had the privilege of learning who my family really were, both culture and personality. Since my parents were in church I grew up learning and living a christian life. I discovered my talents there and what I can do as a full blown artist. Church is where I found my voice to sing and to desire to create. I would sing in church, create plays and puppets. From there I knew I was created to create and perform. 

  My upbringings at church other than church were very americanized, other than drinking coffee from a young age I was americanized. My parents too were born out here so it wasn't like they knew what it was like in Puerto rico either other than when they would visit as kids. I had a lot of Caribbean influence being that the majority of my school teachers and principles were west indian up until high school. My parents made sure I was kept out of trouble and gossip  and involved in school activities as much as I wanted to. I involved myself in musical theater , singing and art programs as much as I had the opportunity to. Eventually musical theater was what I majored in when I got to highschool. It was all i wanted to do and i kept going until after after school. It wasn't until college where i was an art major that i had the opportunity to have a puertorican history class. This was going to be the class that filled in the missing gaps for me about what I knew about Puerto rico and I was invested.
