The Sellout ~ Paul Beatty
The Sellout ~ Paul Beatty
Rating: 3/5 I find this book to be ingenious in a lot of ways. First of all, Beatty has crafted a well developed character without using his name once throughout the course of these pages. Written in the first person perspective, Beatty gives us “The Sellout” a man who describes the ways in which he and his community have failed. This is a satire, and a lot of the humor is very biting and…

A Window Opens ~Elisabeth Egan
A Window Opens ~Elisabeth Egan
Rating: 4/5 I really enjoyed this story about family and one woman’s journey to finding her way through changing family circumstances. Although nothing stellar or groundbreaking, this quiet story hit me at the right place at the right time. Alice’s life is shaken up when her husband gets fired/quits his job at a big firm and decides to hang his own shingle, requiring Alice to quit her part time…

Furiously Happy ~ Jenny Lawson
Furiously Happy ~ Jenny Lawson
Rating: 4/5 I enjoyed Furiously Happy more than Lawson’s last memoir, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened. Which is funny to me because the person I bought this book at at a garage sale last summer said she preferred the first book, which I ended up reading and didn’t enjoy that much, so it took me a while to pick this up. Of course now I’ve requested and been approved for her next book coming out…

Rising Strong ~ Brene Brown
Rising Strong ~ Brene Brown
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rating: 5/5
Rising Strong takes Daring Greatly up a notch. Brown has this trajectory to her research on vulnerability that she begins in Daring Greatly, progresses in Braving the Wilderness, and culminates in Rising Strong. Likely there will be more, and variation on the same vulnerability research, but for now this is the way the arc goes.
Rising Strong is about getting back up when…

Red Queen ~ Victoria Aveyard
Red Queen ~ Victoria Aveyard
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rating: 4/5
After seeing this book everywhere, I finally decided to pick it up now that the series is either finished or significantly further along. Let me just say, I was a little shocked by how much I enjoyed the story! This is a plot based YA fantasy, heavy on the politics. There’s a lot about family, a lot about the government style, a lot about the rebellion, and a little bit of action.

Sapiens ~ Yuval Noah Harari
Sapiens ~ Yuval Noah Harari
Rating: 4/5 I listened to Sapiens on audiobook, narrated by Derek Perkins whose narration is perfectly suited to the subject matter. His reading is steady and his inflection fits the intrigue behind the writing. While Harari’s book is nonfiction, the story of how humans came to be, at times it reads like a drama. Our eventual rise to being the only human species currently alive, our…
