THE DRIVING METAPHOR
Tumblr media Tumblr media
images by @unladyboss
So, there are a lot of mentions of driving in the show, I will do my best to put them all together.
Carmy doesn't own a car, but he seems a competent driver. We have seen him walking to his home at night multiple times already, particularly in 1x02. We don't know why he doesn't own a car.
Sydney was a professional driver; however, she described the experience as "the crazy shit that made me do this crazy shit" (talking about the restaurant business). She mentions not owning a car to indicate how much she hasn't accomplished, next to still living with her dad.
Both Carm and Sydney are the designated drivers of Richie's car.
Both Carmy and Sydney commute by public transit and walking.
Claire is a terrible driver, but she enjoys the risk of it. Yet, when she is with Carmy, she is the one driving.
Richie got his license suspended. This could be for many reasons. I think that he may have been intoxicated while driving or had a road incident of some sort, something that happened after finding out about Mickey's death.
Cicero had a vivid dream of being driving a car out of control while Carm's dad was in the passenger seat. They eventually have to push the brakes to avoid hitting a kid on the road. Carmy's dad went through the windshield at full speed, with the kid waving at him. Many people have speculated if this is some metaphor for Papa Berzatto's addiction. If you are a car, the addiction makes you go out of control. But then, why is Cicero the one driving? I think this may be an analogy for their business, KBL, which supposedly has some dark corners that gave Cicero all his money. Was Papa Berzatto's death something related to KBL?
Donna, on Christmas night, attempted suicide in front of her children and her whole family by crashing a car through the wall of their home. My God. How the fuck we even begin to unpack all that? If Cicero's dream was more literal, and Donna's attempt had succeeded, both parents of the Berzatto family would have died in car-related incidents.
Sweeps, Tina, and Ebra don't drive.
Marcus drives, and we have to presume he owns a car since Carmy offered him to go to pick out flour in 1x02. Random fact: Marcus mentions sleeping in the restaurant to save time on his commute. How long would his commute be if he owned a car? This may be an indicator of him living way outside of the city.
THE RESTAURANT IS THE VEHICLE
Carmy is "driving," as in conducting the restaurant his brother and mom previously drove. He is supposed to give "direction," aka purpose, to the passengers so they can move in the same direction. He was supposed to have the wheel and the map on hand.
Her mom wanted to crash it all, the family and the restaurant, giving that burden to his eldest son.
Carmy doesn't trust himself to control the restaurant or the people, the other passengers in the car, and he finds Sydney and gives her that role. Right after he learned she was a professional driver.
Sydney didn't like driving for ups, the same way she didn't like managing people in her previous jobs, as mentioned at the beginning of Brigade. Still, she takes the wheel.
The people unhappy with the sudden change of driver and direction gave her a bad time.
The most unhappy person with the change was Richie, the most unqualified person to drive because he got his license suspended. His redemption arc was completed when Sydney asked him to call the orders, the passengers listening to him and Sydney's voice. "Richie, drive."
Tina, Ebra, and Sweeps didn't "drive" the restaurant because they still needed to have a purpose and identity.
DRIVING IS A METAPHOR FOR TAKING OWNERSHIP AND DIRECTION ON YOUR LIFE:
Again, we won't start with Papa and Mama Berzatto wanting to crash it all.
Mickey was Richie's map for finding the love of a family. So Richie had to find a new map and destination. The map was hospitality, based on recognizing his own people skills.
Carmy let Claire take the wheel of their relationship, again, there is so much to unpack here. But she is a terrible driver and doesn't seem concerned about how her recklessness behind the wheel may affect others. Sydney, again, was a professional driver. Is this supposed to be a message of people with addictions or trying to heal from them, surrounding themselves with people who have direction, vs the reckless ones? I will take this as a chef-kiss victory.
Sydney wants full ownership and the capacity to make her path. That is why she wants her own car.
Why does Carmy keep failing/avoiding the role of the person behind the wheel? Is there something related to Richie calling him Donna, who tried to take her own life behind the wheel?
Is Carmy dealing with some hidden addiction? check @unladyboss theories about Carmy being a high-functioning alcoholic in this post, they got me sweating at night.

HOW COULD YOU DO THIS? / 4.2k words / pt 4
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It had been nine months since they officially broke up.
Their breakup wasn't public, but people figured it out when they weren't really seen together. And Harry's new album told the world what they had already anticipated.
Y/N's heart was still sore, but the hole in her chest had lessened and she learned how to have fun again.
She took the job in Australia, and was relieved to find out she wasn't as recognizable there as she was in America. Her name still came up online, but I guess people didn't expect her to be here so they didn't approach her the same way they did in LA. She was grateful.
"Guess what I got?" Her roommate, Malika, sung as she sat across the table.
"Chlamydia?" Y/N joked
"In college, yeah, but not today" Malika retorted, pulling a slip from her back pocket "I got us a treat"
Y/N's eyes lit up.
She could use a treat. She had been working a lot, and very hard. People out here were much more intense than her, and after taking a year off of school, she was a bit rusty compared to her colleagues. She caught on quick; she was resourceful and knew her stuff, but she felt like she had been working in overdrive to meet deadlines. She needed a break.
"What kind of treat?" Y/N pryed. She really hoped it wasn't work related.
"Well, not to be weird, or anything, but I hear you blaring Harry Styles across the hall every so often." Y/N swore the colour drained from her face at the mention of his name. "And he's performing in Sydney next week! This guy I'm seeing knows a guy who knows a guy.. and I was able to get us tickets to go on Thursday!"
Y/N felt bad that she couldn't feign more excitement. She didn't know how to break it to her.
"Jeez - tough crowd." Malika caught on "Guilty pleasure? Is he not really your fav?"
Y/N smiled sheepishly, and pulled the tickets from her friends hands.
"No - yeah. That's great. Sure, we can go."
She could admit she hadn't thought of him much these days. She had been so busy and hadn't relistened to his new album in a couple of months. When it came out in May she listened to it almost too much, sobbing to the steady stream of songs that were undeniably about her, and once the heartbreak subsided she hadn't found much reason to listen to it again.
"I don't know many of his new songs. 'As it Was', of course, but most of the others are gonna be unfamiliar to me" Malika said, taking the tickets back "If it sucks we can definitely leave early"
Y/N knew it wouldn't suck. If Harry was one thing, it was a good performer. She wondered how long she could get away with concealing the fact that she knew him. Hopefully forever.
Thursday came quickly, and Y/N's nerves were heightened but she just pushed through.
"Ummm okay, great seats." Malika boasted. They weren't that great, Y/N had seen many shows from a lot closer, but she kept that to herself.
"Best seats in the house" She lied.
Y/N was self conscious. She spent hours deciding what to wear and ended up just buying a whole new outfit. Nothing crazy - she wore some flared jeans and a white crop top. She felt comfortable but still dressed to impress. She was satisfied.
The concert was great. Nothing made Harry more attractive than when he was dancing around on stage. His stylist was getting more ambitious and so was he - and Y/N's heart ached listening to the series of songs she had spent so long crying in the bathtub to. She tried to not let it affect her.
The night went quickly and she was happy that no one seemed to recognize her or come up to them. They left shortly after the show and that was that. Y/N figured this was good closure and she was happy that being there didn't seem too weird. He didn't know she was there - and she was going to keep it that way. This is what she told herself, anyway.
The next day, though, she realized she didn't get out of there without getting caught.
"Ummm???? you didn't tell me you fucking DATED him?" Malika furrowed her eyebrows as she shoved her phone into Y/N's face. Of course she was going to be photographed at the concert; of course his fans would recognize who she was.
"Yeah." She admitted. What else was she supposed to say?
"Well? Want to elaborate, or?"
Y/N shrugged. Why couldn't her friend just goggle her name like everyone else?
Malika tapped her foot, patiently waiting for her friend to give her any further information.
Y/N sighed and filled her in, and she was grateful that Malika was, 100%, on her side.
"Well I can't believe you didn't tell me, but I'm glad you broke it off. Dating someone famous seems like a lot of work."
She shrugged. It was. But Y/N had to admit she hadn't thought about anything other than Harry since the show the night before. He was so charismatic and she missed the way he made her laugh. He was never himself like when he was on stage.
Before she could reply, her phone began to ring. Face up in front of them, Harry's contact popped up onto the screen. She let it ring for a moment, debating whether or not to even answer. Before Y/N knew it, Malika smirked, taking it upon herself to pick it up.
"Hi, this is Y/N's phone. Who is this?" Malika answered, she placed it on speaker. Y/N rolled her eyes.
"Oh - uh, this is Harry. I was hoping I could speak to Y/N, if she's available..."
"Mhmm" Malika ruffled her papers, pretending to be flipping through god knows what. "She's a very busy woman, who was this again? Harry... Harry... Harry who?"
"Harry Styles" She could tell he was clenching his teeth. She wondered if it was because he was nervous or because he was frustrated. Maybe both.
"I don't have a Harry Styles on the dial through list. Could I take a message? Get her to call you back?"
Y/N gave her a look, and Malika put up a finger pleading her to wait.
"Of course, yeah. Yeah. Um, can you just tell her I would love to chat? Maybe go for lunch? I'm only in Sydney for two more days but I was hoping I could maybe see her...."
"Sure, I can pass that along." Malika paused for a moment. "Anything else?"
"Uh - yeah. Um, how is she?'
Y/N was reaching for the phone now, to Malika's dismay.
"Oh! She's just walked in, You can ask her yourself, please hold."
Y/N rolled her eyes at her friend, sucking in a breath before connecting the line, turning it off speaker in the process.
"Hi Harry." She said sheepishly
"Hey" He let out a breath "How are you?"
"I'm okay - yeah, been good. I decided to go for that job here in Sydney. We head out to Cairns every few weeks and, yeah it's been really good."
She paused for a moment
"How are you?"
"I'm okay. Touring, you know, the usual." They were silent for a moment.
"I saw you came to the show last night." He paused "Did you enjoy it?"
"Of course I did, Harry." She smiled at his modesty. "You always put on a good show."
"Thanks." She could tell he was smiling "One of my best ones, I reckon. Almost like I knew you were there."
Almost, she thought.
"You should've texted, could've got you free tickets or somethin - saw you after the show'"
"My friend surprised me with them, actually"
"Oh" He didn't know what to make of that. "Well I'm really glad you came. I've, uh, missed you."
"Yeah - of course. I miss you too. I loved the new album too, by the way."
She cursed herself at how awkward this was. What was she supposed to say?
"Thanks, I had some pretty good inspiration"
She smiled to herself
"Yeah"
"Well uh - I'm in town for a few more nights. I was hoping I could see you, maybe? Catch up a bit. If you're free! I know you're pretty busy and stuff-"
"Never too busy for you." She admitted. She cursed the butterflies in her stomach. "I'd like that, when were you thinking?"
"Tomorrow? For lunch - if you're free. I can send a car."
"Sounds good. I'll text you my address."
"Okay." He sounded satisfied "I'll see you tomorrow, then."
"See you then." She bit her lip. Malika was looking at her with her eyebrows raised.
"Can't wait."
~~~~
If Y/N thought she had a hard time picking an outfit for the concert, she was in for a rude awakening. She had tried on everything she owned and nothing seemed appropriate for a 'private lunch date with former celebrity boyfriend'.
Malika had never been more invested in anything than this. It didn't take her long to realize that while Y/N should want nothing to do with him, she was clearly still interested and Malika was going to make sure Y/N took the chance while it was in front of her. She had never seen Y/N even remotely interested in someone, and after looking them up online she understood that Y/N had been downplaying her relationship with the celebrity. Y/N needed a life. She needed excitement; and this was the first time Malika had seen her even remotely nervous for something.
"Ugh - stop" Malika demanded. "One sec."
Y/N waited for her friend to return, nervously biting the corner of her lip as her mind raced.
The cargo pants Malika let her borrow were perfect. They were loose enough that she felt comfortable but fit her waist perfectly. She made a mental note to go shopping and get a few outfits, since she clearly hated all her own clothes.
"Lookin good." Malika grinned. Y/N decided to give up on the thought of doing her hair and just let it fall naturally. She needed to stop worrying. She would be fine.
"Thanks." Y/N said, rubbing her palms onto the front of the pants "Is it too late for me to cancel?"
Y/N was nervous. She had no idea was to expect from this lunch - were they just going to catch up? It had been almost a year since she had seen him last, and she had changed so much that she wondered if he would be different too. She suddenly felt she was being irrational and shouldn't have let Malika answer the phone in the first place.
"Yes it is." Malika rolled her eyes "You're going."
Y/N wasn't sure what she wanted out of this, and that was her issue. She had finally moved on, and she was just going to open back up the very thing that tore her apart to begin with?
"You're over analyzing." Malika said softly "Just go to the fuckin' lunch, and if it doesn't feel right just be honest and don't do it again."
Y/N nodded at her friend. She still wasn't convinced, but she wasn't going to argue with her.
"Just remember he's a dirty cheater and you're allowed to take this as closure. If that's what you want."
"Thanks."
Malika was right. She didn't have to put any pressure on this - maybe Harry was feeling the same. Maybe this wasn't going to be anything other than a quick lunch from the past. She decided to just go in not expecting anything, it was safer that way.
Checking the time, she decided to head outside as the car should be there soon.
"Ms L/N?" The driver asked, pulling up to the curb.
Y/N let out a breath she didn't know she was holding. Is this a mistake?
"Yes." She smiled, climbing into the back seat. "Now, where are we going?"
"Surprise." The driver said knowingly. "Bit of a drive so please make yourself comfortable."
Harry had been frantic from the moment he got off the phone with her. He needed this to be good - really good. If it didn't go well he knew he would never see her again, and he was determined to stop that from happening.
She came the show. He reminded himself. She wants to see him, or she simply wouldn't have come.
She didn't tell you she was coming, though. He thought. He brushed it away. It doesn't matter. She still came.
Harry had planned something good. They were going to a seafood restaurant, one with a glass floor so you could see fish and sharks swimming below your table. He had only been there once but he remembered thinking she would love it. He never had the chance to take her before so he wasn't going to let the opportunity pass this time.
It was a bit outside of Sydney. He probably shouldn't have committed to going so far from the venue but honestly, he would've cancelled tonight's show if she had only been available for dinner. They're lucky she was good for lunch - he stopped worrying about that.
He opted to going there early, he had rented out the main floor so he knew they wouldn't be bothered. He didn't want to risk anyone coming over and bringing up their past, so it seemed easier this way.
Harry was nervous. He didn't know what to expect, and even worse, he didn't know what she was expecting. He had missed her a lot, anf he would get back together with her in an instant if that's what she wanted. But he didn't want to pressure her. He just wanted to see her and was relieved she had accepted the invite.
She came to the show. He reminded himself. She said yes to lunch. She wants to see you.
Harry repeated those thoughts a few more times before heading out. He decided to drive himself, hoping that maybe she would want a lift home after and they could spend the drive back together.
No pressure. No expectations. Whatever happens.
Harry breathed out, starting the car and making the drive. He couldn't think of anything other than her the entire ride there.
Y/N was starting to get antsy, alone in the backseat with just her thoughts. It was further than she expected, which would be okay if she was even a bit familiar with the roads in Australia. She didn't even know what direction they were headed.
Eventually they hit the ocean, and she regained a bit of familiarity. At least they're on the coast; she loved to be near the ocean and immediately took comfort as she watched the waves in the horizon. She wondered if Harry remembered that or if he had someone else make the reservation.
It was a short ride after that, the driver stopping outside a small building on the edge of the beach. She thanked him and climbed out - taking a look at the small restaurant. There were no other cars around and minimal people along the beach.
Y/N was relieved for the privacy and made her way inside.
There were few employees, but they were expecting her and ushered her to the table promptly. Y/N didn't even have time to register who was around, her eyes glued to the glass floor. There were fish swimming beneath her - sea turtles and bass and a few more she didn't see long enough to properly identify. She couldn't stop herself from smiling widely.
"Hi." Harry greeted, standing as she arrived at a table right in the middle.
"Hi" She repeated, biting her lip. Y/N didn't know what to expect but it sure as shit wasn't this.
"You look great" He smiled. She felt underdressed compared to him but that was okay. Better to be underdressed than overdressed.
"This is so fucking cool." She gushed, squatting down to look at the aquarium beneath them. "Like really cool"
"Yeah - I came here for a work thing a few years ago and thought you might like it. I ordered a bottle of wine but you can get whatever."
Y/N nodded, looking back at Harry. She took her seat and he sat back down in front of her.
"Wine is good." She said, and Harry smiled. She was just as he remembered.
"How are things? Are you enjoying Australia?"
Y/N bit her lip again, eyes darting between the man across from her and the water just inches below them.
"So far so good." She smiled, flipping the wine glass right side up. "People are nice here."
"Nice people attract nice people." He said, pouring some wine into her glass. "I'm doing a few shows so it's been cool to stay here for more than just one or two nights"
Y/N nodded, taking a sip of the wine. It was very good, not that she was surprised. It probably costed more than her rent.
"Yeah it took me awhile to adjust to the time difference but I think once I finally settled into that, things just sorta went up from there."
"Good. I'm still struggling with the jet lag." He admitted, pouring himself a glass "But I definitely can't complain."
Y/N nodded again. It was definitely less awkward seeing him in person than the phone call they had the day before.
"So." He started, looking at her expectingly "Tell me about your work"
So she did. She told him about the job and the people - and the cool things she had seen since coming here. She was able to see some species she had only looked at in textbooks and was happy to talk about the experiences she'd had so far.
Harry nodded along, listening intently. He kept up even though she used the scientific names that went right over his head. He admired how smart she was and was relieved when he found out she had taken the job after all. She deserved it and he was happy she came to that realization after they split up. She didn't need anyone and the confidence looked good on her.
Y/N talked about fish for awhile. She talked about seeing sharks when she scuba dived and the nice family from France that just about shit when they saw it swimming near them. Y/N wasn't scared, though, and told him how proud of herself she was for taking risks she didn't know she was capable of.
"Congrats on the number one, by the way." Y/N complimented, turning the conversation towards him. Harry shrugged. He didn't care about commercial success but was happy to have the label ease off since the album was doing well. He knew she was aware of what he had written about so he didn't delve much further.
"Seriously - I hear it everywhere. Drove me crazy the first month or so but now I just smile everytime I go into a store and they're blaring it." She said
"Thanks, yeah. I almost didn't want it to be the lead single but I knew it was one of the best songs."
Harry was more or less the same as the last time Y/N saw him. His hair was a bit longer, not much but the extra inch or so looked good on him. He was dressed different - but she kind of liked it. He seemed more comfortable than she had ever seen him before. She was happy for him.
"I filmed another movie" He shared "Think it'll be my last one for a bit, though. Was a lot more work this time around."
"I can't wait to see it." She admitted. She had seen the last two films he was in and he did great. It was weird to see him pretending to be someone else, but she was proud that he stepped out of his comfort zone. He needs that - everybody needs that.
"It's not the same without you, though." He said, and she looked at him puzzled.
"What's not?'
"Touring - travelling, I dunno. Life I guess. My life. It's been a long time since I was out on the road without any reasons to go back."
Harry had gone back to LA everytime he was off. He didn't call her, or go to her house or anything crazy. He just felt a kind of comfort being 'home'. He chuckled at how many times he felt close to her when she was actually halfway across the world, unbeknownst to him.
"Me too." She admitted "It was weird to know what days you didn't have shows and not count the moments until they came."
Harry nodded, deciding not to comment on the fact that she knew at least some of his tour schedule.
"I didn't know you were in Australia though" She said "I sorta got lost in my work the last few months and it's funny how that happened right when you were nearby. I just about shit when Malika pulled the tickets out - I honestly didn't even know you were coming to Sydney."
Harry smiled sadly, he hadn't thought of her for a few months either. This leg of the tour had been constant - and she was so far away back in the US that he hadnt thought about what she was doing or if he may run into her in LA. His days off were spent writing and cooped up in the hotels.
"I didn't know you were in Sydney either." He smiled "Until I saw an article that you were at the show. Most of my team was surprised that I didn't know you attended."
Y/N bit her lip. She didn't want to admit that she decided against texting him that she was going.
"Yeah - I'll admit I had hoped I would fly under the radar." Harry was silent at that, so she quickly added "I'm really glad I got caught though"
Harry smiled to himself and finished his glass of wine, reaching to pour himself another.
"Yeah I kinda figured you didn't want me to know so I went back and forth about calling you." Harry said, and Y/N bit her lip
"Glad I did though" He winked and she let out a breath
"I was stupid to think no one would recognize me." She mumbled "I had gone so long without anyone knowing who I was I think I just assumed everyone forgot."
"I love them, but my fans never forget." He replied
"Yeah." Was all she said. She wasn't upset that people knew her anymore - she had really gotten used to it and had grown more accepting of the fact that it was just a part of being with someone famous. She was pretty lucky - people generally liked her. She was upset that she was naive enough to think it had really subsided, though.
"I'm still glad you came, though." He said, almost in a whisper.
"Me too." She finished her glass, turning her attention to the menu. "So, what should I order?"
The rest of the lunch went smoothly. They took their time eating and catching up, and Harry was sure he would never get her off his mind again. It was going well, really well.
But Y/N still wasn't sure what his intentions were. Would he want to be with her again? Was he happier without her? They both seemed to be doing okay but she felt her stomach drop at the thought of this lunch coming to an end. She didn't want to go back to her life without him after finally seeing him again.
She knew what she wanted so she decided to get it together and be straight forward.
"Uh, weird question. Is this a date?"
Harry nearly choked on the last bite of his food, not expecting her to say that at all.
"Oh um." He started, and Y/N regretted asking. "I don't really know, honestly."
Y/N sighed in relief. She didn't really know either. At least they were on the same page.
"Do you.. want it to be?" He finally added, turning his attention from his plate to the woman before him. He knew what he wanted - and yes, he hoped it was a date.
"I think so." She bit her lip. She was doing good, but the thought of reconnecting with Harry excited her more than anything. She was scared; she still felt a bit worried that things wouldn't work out between them. But now she knew she would be okay if they didn't. She could admit she wanted to try and that being with him right now made her feel like the last 18 months hadn't really happened.
"Okay." He smiled. He didn't expect it, but he definitely wasn't going to complain. He had prepared for the worst so he was happy to be pleasantly surprised. "Then it's a date."
Y/N blushed, nodding as she finished her third glass of wine. She didn't know where this was going to go or if things would work out between them, but that was okay. She was okay with that.
"We don't have to pick up where we left off." He said softly "I mean - let's just take it slow and see how things go."
"I like your rhymes." She smiled
"Thanks, It's the songwriter in me" He joked
"Thanks for calling me." She said "Not sure I would've ever gotten the courage."
"Not sure where mine came from." Harry said. That wasn't true, he saw she was at the show and knew he wouldn't be able to live with himself if he didn't at least try. She came and he knew that meant something.
"Well, I'm really glad you did. I didn't think this.." She motioned between them, not really sure what to call it "Was even on your mind anymore."
He wanted to tell her that he thought about her for months after they broke up. He wanted to tell her that she was the only thing that mattered and he was a mess without her in the beginning. He wanted to tell her he hadn't been with anyone since because he knew it wouldn't be the same. He wanted to tell her a lot of things - but he decided to just enjoy that they could move forward now.
He was pleased she even wanted anything to do with him and he wasn't going to do anything to mess it up this time. He would make sure of it.
"It wasn't." He decided on. "But I think that's why it was perfect."
She nodded in agreement. It was perfect, and they both knew they would work hard to keep each other this time. She wanted to, though. And she was happy things would only go up from here.
"It is perfect."

hey lottie, i found your blog about 10 mins ago searching 'australian national university' ... imagine my surprise when i saw you're doing political science, which is exactly what i want to study at ANU!! i live in sydney and am currently in yr 12 and am gonna go to open day on the 16th. i was wondering if you had any advice (no matter how small, id love to hear it) to someone who's currently at my stage or just any info about things i should be prepared for. or any xtra info about accomodation!
hey hey!!!
i have loved my degree, i gained so much knowledge and insight. the quality of teaching is really high, and the profs do genuinely care for their field. the department has some of the best political scientists in Australia
Study wise, get ready for lots of content, first year is pretty much the basics but probably the hardest in terms of volume of content. I actually prefer later years courses because you get more specific information about a topic, whereas first year courses are introductory level. It may seem boring, but these courses will teach you how to study and write essays at a uni level.
My other advice would be to try and get in the APS as soon as you can, either in an entry level role/internship (if you intend on going the public service route. Either way, it’s quite easy for polisci undergads to find APS work, and much better than being in hospo). You can look around on LinkedIn or the APS Gazette website for jobs. Look around for internships and stuff too. If you’re interested in academia/honours, I would suggest asking profs from second year if they need any research assistance, that’s really great experience. Definitely make an effort to show up to class and do the readings, profs love eager students. If you do honours, getting to know profs will be useful in picking a supervisor later, and they’re good contacts to have for job references. Profs will always be happy to give you references if you get like over 70 in their course. Networking and connections are important, so get on that linkedin game and have good relations with profs. It’s very different from high school, but they do care if you reach out.
Accom wise, I’ve been at UniLodge (I don’t want to say which one for obvious reasons) for all of my degree (I’m South Australian originally), and have generally liked it. Very good atmosphere if you get involved, we put on a great o week. Definitely stop by lodge on open day, you can see some of the buildings etc. lodge is still the cheapest accomodation on campus I believe. ANU is great if you’re from Sydney, they are loads of buses and train connections. I’ve been to Sydney several times for concerts and stuff, it’s pretty easy to pop back for a long weekend (way harder for me to go home to Adelaide frequently. I’m jealous of my Sydney sider friends aha).
I hope this is helpful. Let me know if you have any more specific questions after open day!

Science Saturday
This Saturday we bring you some of German-American artist and graphic designer Fritz Kredel’s illustrations from the 1971 Limited Editions Club publication of Charles Darwin’s The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex, edited and introduced by anthropologist Ashley Montagu. The book was handset, printed, and bound in an edition of 1,500 signed by the artist at Griffin Press of Australia. Book design was overseen by Douglas A. Dunstan, who had run Griffin until he retired from printing in 1967.
Dunstan (1906-1987) became interested in printing at a young age through exposure to the business via his brother-in-law, typographer and publisher Perce Green. Dunstan originally trained as a lithographer before settling into letterpress printing, eventually going on to work for Green at Green Press in Sydney. In 1938, Dunstan became the manager of Advertiser Printing Office, a job printing outfit associated with the city of Adelaide’s newspaper The Advertiser (both founded 1858). Dunstan saw potential in the press and sought to improve the quality of the printing, but World War II put those plans on hold and Advertiser Printing Offices converted into a munitions plant for several years in support of the war effort. Dunstan finally rechristened the business Griffin Press in 1954. We hold several other Limited Editions Club publications designed by Dunstan and printed at Griffin Press: The Explorations of Captain James Cook in the Pacific (1957), On the Origin of Species (1963), and A Voyage to the South Seas (1975).
The Descent of Man was first published as two volumes in February of 1871, twelve years after On the Origin of Species. It sold out immediately and a second printing was ordered within weeks. A second edition, extensively revised and produced in a single volume, was published in 1874. It is this second edition that is most commonly reprinted today, and is the edition that editor Ashley Montagu worked from. While The Descent of Man sought to apply the evolutionary theories put forth in Origin of Species to humankind, it “placed man squarely in the continuum in which he belonged—the animal kingdom,” wrote Montagu.

Could 'Menstrual Leave' Change the Workplace?
Francis, A. (2022, April 28). Could ‘menstrual leave’ change the workplace? BBC Worklife. https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20220426-could-menstrual-leave-change-the-workplace
Tumblr media
Ali Francis writes: “Menstrual leave has existed in various forms around the world for at least a century: the Soviet Union introduced a national policy in 1922, Japan in 1947 and Indonesia in 1948. But it’s still rare in many large global economies, ... Now, however, a movement endorsing it is growing, as more and more companies around the world are starting to introduce the benefit. If widely introduced, women, transgender and non-binary workers who menstruate stand to gain: they would have direct pathways to rest when they need it most, be happier and more productive at work as a result and find it easier to remain in the labour market. Yet, since menstrual leave has entered the global zeitgeist, some of its critics have argued that the benefit is unfair, or that it could further stigmatise people with periods. Does menstrual leave help or hinder workers who struggle without the leave they feel they need?”
“Most women try to push through and go to work, anyway. This is often because they feel reluctant to disclose menstrual-related symptoms to their superiors, for fear of being perceived as weak or incapable of doing their jobs, says Gabrielle Golding, a senior lecturer at South Australia’s Adelaide Law School. Results from a 2021 survey from the Victorian Women’s Trust and Circle In, an HR software provider based in Melbourne, Australia, showed 70% of the 700 participants didn’t feel comfortable talking to their managers about how they could accommodate their menopausal symptoms (which often include heavy periods); 83% said their work was negatively affected as a result. And this tends to be ‘exacerbated in the absence of a menstrual leave scheme’, adds Golding – with dire knock-on effects, often prompting women to ignore their physical and mental health.”
“And although these policies might benefit the workers who decide to use them, corporate perks – like paid menstrual leave or the ability to work from home – are not afforded universally. Service workers with intense periods, who spend full days on their feet, are forced to choose between a day off and a pay cheque. Golding believes this inequality must be fixed systemically: ‘A right to paid menstrual leave, which is mandated in a broadly applicable statute, would mean that women from a vast array of socio-economic backgrounds would be afforded the opportunity to take leave.’”

Spain Plans Menstrual Leave in New Law for those with Severe Pain
Spain plans menstrual leave in new law for those with severe pain. (2022, May 12) BBC News. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-61429022
BBC News writes: “A draft bill says women could have three days of leave a month - extended to five in some circumstances. But politicians warned that the draft - leaked to Spanish media outlets - was still being worked on. Three-day sick leave for painful periods will be allowed with a doctor's note, the draft says, potentially extending to five on a temporary basis for particularly intense or incapacitating pain. But it is not expected to apply to those who suffer mild discomfort. It is part of a wider approach of treating menstruation as a health condition, El País reports, which also includes the abolishing of VAT on some hygiene products - the so-called ‘tampon tax’ - and free hygiene products being made available at public centres such as schools and prisons.”

Sure, America knows now (because SNL is not worldwide), but ultimately the only people that matter are in the business. Rich people don't really care about regular people, and other rich people understand the game. Looking at it from the perspective of someone who is not in the business is pretty much useless. Sydney's fiance probably has a say in what she does in terms of her career, it seems like he's been coaching her through it.
Btw. Davino is only 40, so you must be a child if you think he is "old as fuck". He is older than Sydney and their relationship is definitely icky, but he is not that old.
As someone who is in the business, I’m giving my thoughts/musings/whatever you want to call it on how this looks and how it looks to others I’ve talked to about the subject. Public perception DOES matter, it’s called public relations for a reason, there’s literally people paid to maintain celerities images. All I’m saying her team is doing a great job at maintaining her image (as they should) but it’s at the expense of her partner. Which is something I haven’t seen before, most celebs ignore silly rumors or address it within reason, the exact opposite is happening and her partner is publicly made into the butt of a joke. Maybe he doesn’t care because he isn’t a public figure but as someone who does business with her and is her producing partner, he genuinely looks like a joke who can’t be taken seriously.
Maybe he doesn’t care and, if not, good for him but I was simply musing my thoughts on the matter because homeboy has literally been made into a punchline for like a year.
And to clarify, he’s “old as fuck” compared to her considering there’s a 13 year age difference and they met when she was 20 (I believe that’s correct). But no 40 is not old, that’s old compared to the woman he’s dating. But I’m also aware that’s the norm for Hollywood, so wouldn’t be the first time a twenty something married a man 10+ years her age.

AUSTRALIA – UK – FREE TRADE AGREEMENT – TACKLE RISING LIVING COSTS
Tumblr media
Much Awaited Australia – United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement (FTA) enters into force from 31st May 2023
The agreement is a gold standard trade deal that delivers benefits for all Australians – including manufacturers, workers, farmers, trades, innovators, families, and students.
The United Kingdom is one of Australia’s major trading partners, with two-way goods trade worth $10 billion in 2022, and two-way services trade worth over $11 billion in 2021-22, making it our second largest services trading partner.
As of today, over 99 per cent of Australian products will enter the UK duty free. These include some of our key exports, such as wine, short and medium grain rice, sugar, honey, nuts, olive oil and food supplements.
UK tariffs on Australian industrial goods, such as auto parts, electrical equipment and fashion items are now eliminated. Australian agricultural products, including beef and sheep meat, sugar and dairy products, will have duty free transitional quotas, with eventual elimination of all tariffs.
For Australian consumers, tariffs on 98 per cent of UK imports to Australia are now eliminated, with the remainder removed within six years.
The agreement strengthens our people-to-people links with the UK. Australian professionals now have the same access to the UK job market as nationals from the European Union, except the Republic of Ireland.
The agreement also includes measures designed to improve the mobility of skilled workers and young people, in both directions. From 31 January 2024, Australians up to the age of 35, up from 30, will be able to apply for working holidays in the UK and stay for a maximum of three years instead of two.
Trade is more than just the exchange of products and services, it also boosts the exchange of ideas. Which is why our new trade agreement lays the foundation for Australian artists, including First Nations artists, receive royalties when their original works of art are resold in the UK.
The UK is Australia’s second largest source of investment, amounting to over $1 trillion in 2022. Modern investment provisions will help promote further growth in two-way investment.
Importantly, an investor-state dispute settlement mechanism is not part of the agreement. This means Australia’s sovereign right to develop and implement legitimate policy measures in areas such as public health and the environment is preserved.
The Albanese Labor Government prioritized legislation in the Parliament to bring this trade deal into force in record time, delivering on our commitment to help businesses diversify their trade and help bring down the cost of living for Australians.
Australian business looking to enter or expand into the UK market can seek assistance from Austrade. Business can also check how the tariff cuts under the agreement apply to their specific goods through DFAT’s FTA Portal and read DFAT’s Guide to Using the A-UKFTA to export and import goods.

Tree Lopping: When Do You Need It
Tree loppers Sydney services have been beneficial to many homeowners because of what they can do to help trees. You will see them bringing out their tools to check the condition of the tree and know the next steps they will take. If you do not know when to get the service, here are some signs you can use as a guide and learning foundation:
Overgrown and Unbalanced Canopy
The first on the list is the overgrown and unbalanced canopy. Sometimes, you look up above the tree and notice the shape of the canopy. Though they might be fun to look at, overgrown and unbalanced ones cannot be healthy for the tree. And with that, they must be checked by a tree professional and cut some. Overgrown ones cannot let the sunlight penetrate the ground, making it unhealthy for other trees. If you go outside to feel the sun, you will also notice and experience the disadvantage it gives.
When it comes to an unbalanced canopy, it could be a sign of an unhealthy tree. It means that there might be something wrong that affects the shape and growth of the tree. If you notice this issue, do not let it worsen and call the professionals immediately.
Dead or Dying Branches
Dead or dying branches are signs that the tree has been distressed for a long time, and no action was done to make the matter go away. But do not be discouraged because there might be some way to improve the health of the tree. Tree lopping is one of the options you have, but it must be done by a tree professional. DIY in this situation might not be ideal because of the severity of the situation. Leaving the job to tree loppers can give you peace of mind and guarantee that every step is within the safety and health of the tree.
Low-Hanging Branches
Low-hanging branches might look like nothing to some, but they can be a threat to anyone. If they are kept in that condition, you will notice that people have challenges moving in the area. To prevent accidents related to this, cutting the low-hanging branch might be the step needed. Say goodbye to obstructed pathways that could become a threat to people. But aside from inside the property, you will also notice this problem in public spaces that could disturb pedestrians and vehicles.
Leaning Trees
Leaning trees might look unique, but this cannot be the case for their health and development. They can be unstable and dangerous to anyone who will encounter them in that shape. The growth is incorrect, so tree lopping is needed. But aside from these, they can also damage the property. Once they fall, you do not know where it will hit. If there is open space, there is a chance that no one or nothing will get involved. But if this is not the case, it means more damage occurs.
Pest Infestations
Tree pest infestations are one of the many problems of trees. If the trees can ever talk, they must be screaming because of this issue. With this, help them by checking any pest infestation in your trees. If there is anything, call the tree loppers,and they will do the tree lopping. This service can lessen the risk of spreading the infestation to the healthy parts of the tree.
Disease Symptoms
Aside from pests, trees can also suffer from diseases. These situations can deteriorate their health slowly and can make them die if not resolved. Tree lopping can help in this situation, but it is also better to understand the differences between the diseases to know what they are going through. Here are some disease symptoms to start:
Discoloured or Wilting Leaves - they could be brown, black, or yellow. The leaves should be green.
Fungus or Mushroom Growth - you will commonly see this on the base of the tree.
Reduced Growth - instead of growing, the opposite happens. The size and health do not match the age of the tree.
Here are other situations that can happen to the tree:
Storm Damage
Interfering with Structures
Excessive Shade
Sightline Obstruction
Aesthetic Concerns
Trees also have a life, so proper tree care is needed. Keep them healthy and maintained to ensure that they will last for years. Even if they are not on your property, slowly taking care of them will not hurt, and it will be a big thing for the tree.

In addition, the program requires students to participate in a range of first aid courses and physiotherapy-related volunteering opportunities.
In the third and fourth years of this degree, you’ll take part in clinical placements. These are a great way to gain practical experience and learn about the profession. They’re also a valuable opportunity to network with other professionals in the field. In addition, the university’s PhysioSoc offers networking events and mentoring programs to students.
Musculoskeletal physiotherapists work with conditions that affect muscles, bones, and joints. These include sprains, injuries, and chronic conditions such as arthritis. They use a variety of techniques to help people reduce pain and improve their movement and function. They also educate patients on how to manage their condition and prevent future problems.
Symptoms of musculoskeletal disorders can vary, but typically they include pain, stiffness, and limited mobility. They may be caused by trauma, repetitive strain injury, poor posture, overuse, or degenerative conditions. Physiotherapists can prescribe treatment including pain medications, manual therapy, exercise, and education.
The musculoskeletal physiotherapy program at Western Sydney University is designed to produce professionals who can truly help their clients and communities lead healthier lives. It includes restoring lost muscle function, increasing movement range and enhancing balance and coordination. It also prevents deterioration of functional ability and reduces pain.
Some of the treatments that may be performed by a physiotherapist include limb positioning and splints, movement training, exercises or activity modification and use of assistive devices. It also involves a comprehensive evaluation of the person’s condition and may incorporate special techniques such as constraint-induced movement therapy or mirror box therapy.
Family members are encouraged to join the sessions as they are crucial to rehabilitation success. This increases morale and keeps clients motivated. It also improves consistency and repetition of the exercises, which is necessary to improve strength and improve mobility and independence.
A sports physiotherapist can help with a wide variety of injuries. These include muscle strains, ligament sprains and tendonitis. They also treat chronic conditions such as arthritis and bursitis. In addition, they can improve weakness and imbalances to increase an athlete’s overall performance.
During your assessment session, the physiotherapist will ask you about your health history and what sports you take part in. This is to assess the severity of your injury and get a better understanding of the type of treatment you will receive. They will also want to know if there are any important events in the near future that you’re hoping to attend. To know more about Physiotherapy Western Sydney, visit the MVP Rehab Physiotherapy website or call 0450603234.

The Freud-Hole, and Bernays' Extimate Space
There’s possibly no greater malady for a writer, in our day and age, than to be stuck in the Freud-hole, and yet here eye am. My former friends (please note here the playful melodrama) are glad to have escaped the event horizon of my eternally unsatisfied, ouroborean questing. Truly, they’d have rathered gouge out their eyes in favour of reading anything written by the hand of such a swollen-footed, motherfucking dreamer, affixed only to the chase of his own tail. The teaching staff where I study smile politely but you can see the apprehension in their Is. What’s he gonna do next?, I hear them thinking, what might he be projecting onto me at this very moment? Into what kind of strange, subconscious streamscape has he lost himself this time? What monstrous slips of the tongue? In truth, my close reading of Freud has been minimal over the years, though to admit this might only make things worse.
Because it could be reasoned that the only sin greater than the writer who finds himself stuck in the sinkhole of Freudian thought is the sin of finding one’s way there unwittingly. A few chapters of The Interpretation of Dreams, maybe a few chapters of The Wolf Man, and at one point, on the edges of memory, Civilization and its Discontents and besides these some sections of papers: Beyond the Pleasure Principle, The Uncanny. If anything, based purely on reading I’m probably more of a Jungian. I said earlier that there’s nothing so frowned upon than a writer who has become affixed in the threads of Freud’s various orbits, but within academia this is perhaps not quite accurate: to be an open Jungian might give your peers the impression that at any moment, you’re likely to begin spouting Swedenborg, or quoting lines of William Blake’s obscurant poetry, or pontificating on the profundity of the writings of Aleister Crowley in relation to man’s collective unconscious. Of course, I’ve probably read more Nietzsche than either of them, but there are some things you dare not admit. In his biography Memories, Dreams, Reflections, Carl Jung writes, of reading Nietzsche:
I felt like the old peasant who discovered that two of his cows had evidently been bewitched and got their heads in the same halter. “how did that happen?” asked his small son. “Boy, one doesn’t talk about such things,” replied his father.
Recently a team of students from Western Sydney University (WSU) were provided the opportunity to visit New York as part of their training in Digital Communications. One photo, dated 16.07.23 depicts the gang visiting the Museum of Public Relations to learn about “the history and evolution of American public relations.” As part of this tour, the students got the chance to observe and interact with original materials from the offices of Ivy Lee, Arthur Page, and Edward Bernays himself, who, the poster points out in what she describes as a ‘fun fact’ was the double-nephew of none other than the father of psychoanalysis himself. It’s certainly not my intention to grate on the team or the poster here, I’m sure they’re doing a fine job in their role as students, but I can’t help but feel as if this connection may be somewhat understated in contemporary society. That he was Freud’s nephew was certainly never understated by Bernays himself. By all accounts, he used every opportunity to prop up his own reputation by reference to the relation. There is also widespread evidence that many of Freud’s ideas formed a central core of tenets for Bernays’ ongoing practice, his upbringing in Austria putting him in close proximity to his uncle’s rising notoriety.
I bring this up, not just to be a stickler, or as some kind of Freudian knight errant who demands recognition of his Lord. But personally, I can think of no better tale of history to illuminate more succinctly the particular kind of media PR hell we experience today, than that of the application of Freudean theory by Mr. Edward Bernays. Freud’s theories arose from his experience as a medical doctor, beginning with his fellowship with Jean-Martin Charcot, a French neurologist who had developed treatments for hysteria based on hypnosis. Freud developed his ‘talking cure’ as a method to uncover and shed light on strange behaviours in patients, often women, which, to his view, had no seeming basis in objective reality. Freud posited that such behaviours, often otherwise labelled simply as ‘hysteria’ (and perhaps, by a retrospective extrapolation, we might notice the historical proximity of madness with the ‘feminine’ within medical discourse, not to mention the witch-burnings) were in fact victims of psychical events which had played out at some point during their personal history (and in most cases, as he would discover, at various points) beneath conscious awareness, and well beyond the ability to articulate such wounds into language. Noting his uncle’s work in uncovering the power of psychic phenomenon that seemed to operate beneath the active purview of consciousness, Bernays developed his theory of propaganda as “the mechanism by which ideas are disseminated on a large scale.” As a practice, Bernays posits propaganda to be a kind of philosophical art-tool grounded in a teleological ends-based politics, utilised best by an ‘invisible government’ for the good of the people. Such an overbearing, yet shadowy agency, according to Bernays, seemed the only way to bring about a socially cohesive zeitgeist, something which could ensure the election of the right candidate (the one funding Bernays, that is) and the dissemination of the right kinds of products (those who hired Bernays as consultant). All for the good of the people. At the time of the publication of his seminal text, Propaganda (1928) Bernays had already forged a reputation for himself, being instrumental in shaping international views regarding America leading up to and during their intervention in WWI. One fan of Bernays’ assertions that “only through the active energy of the intelligent few can the public at large become aware of and act upon new ideas” was Joseph Goebbles, who utilised this vision to construct the Nazi propaganda machine that would sell the population of Germany a concentrated and clearly exaggerated vision of the anti-semitism that had been festering throughout Europe during the 18th Century and beyond. Freud would flee Austria 04.06.38 despite reluctance to do so, even after Hitler, on the 15th of March that same year, had been welcomed by the state leading to an extreme escalation of violence towards the Jewish population. Bernays would move away from the term ‘propaganda’, declaring loudly that any tool, psychological or otherwise, can be utilised for good or evil, depending on the ones that wield it. The new term he coined was ‘Public Relations’. Consulting with Austrian-US psychoanalyst A.A. Brill, Bernays would go on to popularise smoking for women in the adult population of The United States by organising groups of (paid) women to march while smoking cigarettes in the Easter Sunday Parade of 1929, as a way to battle against taboos relating to women smoking, being some considerable market restriction for those paying Bernays. Despite the organisation of these spectacles, Bernays vehemently opposed his wife’s smoking, indicating that he knew at least some of the dangers involved in this.
Of course, one could write an entire thesis on this relationship. The trajectory we see forming here is undoubtedly more complicated than simply asserting that Freud = Bernays (propaganda) = modern advertising. I’m not out here demanding we hold a parade for Freud and throw Bernays in the trash can, but I would be open to the idea of a world in which I could admit freely that I found value in Freud’s endeavour, notwithstanding the many things I found disagreeable and short-sighted about the man. If I’m to accept (as some of my colleagues keep telling me) that Freud’s legacy is just another ghostly voice of the old dead white hegemony, well then at least I’d like them to recognise that same undead ghost in their freedom torches, their 3am tik-tok deep dive eyes and their Barbie ads.
