Trust in God
1 For the leader; with stringed instruments. A psalm of David.
I 2 Answer me when I call, my saving God. When troubles hem me in, set me free; take pity on me, hear my prayer.
II 3 How long, O people, will you be hard of heart? Why do you love what is worthless, chase after lies? Selah 4 Know that the Lord works wonders for his faithful one; the Lord hears when I call out to him. 5 Tremble and sin no more; weep bitterly within your hearts, wail upon your beds, 6 Offer fitting sacrifices and trust in the Lord.
III 7 Many say, “May we see better times! Lord, show us the light of your face!” Selah 8 But you have given my heart more joy than they have when grain and wine abound. 9 In peace I will lie down and fall asleep, for you alone, Lord, make me secure. — Psalm 4 | New American Bible Revised Edition (NABRE) New American Bible, revised edition © 2010, 1991, 1986, 1970 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, Inc. 1 When I call, answer me, O God of my integrity! Deliver me from my distress! Have mercy on me and hear my prayer. 2 O men, how long will you try to destroy my dignity? How long will you assault me with lust and continue to live a lie? 3 Know that God protects Her daughters! She hears when I call out for help! 4 Stop sinning, and repent with fear and trembling. Consult the depths of your own hearts in sacred silence. 5 Offer to God the sacrifices of integrity and respect for all. 6 Many women say, "Who can do us any good?" Let the light of Your face shine upon us, O God. 7 You fill my heart with a joy that is greater than the pleasure of those stuffed with the best food and drink. 8 In peace I will lie down and sleep. For in You, Shaddai, I dwell in safety.
Possible uses of this psalm:
Alleviate insomnia (read along with a short prayer before bed)
Justice in court cases (read psalm several times by a blue candle and John the Conqueror Incense the night before a court appearance)
Restful and peaceful sleep
Change luck from bad to good
Prayer of praise and gratitude (v6-7)
Prayer for protection (v3,8)
Request blessings (v6-7)

‭Psalms 4:1-3
Answer me when I call to you,
my righteous God.
Give me relief from my distress;
have mercy on me and hear my prayer.
How long will you people turn my glory into shame?
How long will you love delusions and seek false gods?
Know that the Lord has set apart his faithful servant for himself;
the Lord hears when I call to him.

Learning to Trust (Psalm 4)
We all find ourselves in a tight spot, between a rock and hard place, at times. It’s what we do when we are in that position that is critical.
Answer me when I cry out, my righteous God!    Set me free from my troubles!        Have mercy on me!        Listen to my prayer! How long, you people,    will my reputation be insulted? How long will you continue    to love what is worthless    and go after lies?Know this: the Lord takes    personal care of the faithful. The Lord will hear me    when I cry out to him.So be afraid, and don’t…

Psalm 4 - A Meditation
Confident Plea for Deliverance from Enemies
To the leader: with stringed instruments. A Psalm of David.
1 Answer me when I call, O God of my right!     You gave me room when I was in distress.     Be gracious to me, and hear my prayer.
2 How long, you people, shall my honour suffer shame?     How long will you love vain words, and seek after lies?
Selah 3 But know that the Lord has set apart the faithful for himself;     the Lord hears when I call to him.
4 When you are disturbed,[a] do not sin;     ponder it on your beds, and be silent. Selah 5 Offer right sacrifices,     and put your trust in the Lord.
6 There are many who say, ‘O that we might see some good!     Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord!’ 7 You have put gladness in my heart     more than when their grain and wine abound.
8 I will both lie down and sleep in peace;     for you alone, O Lord, make me lie down in safety.
Footnotes
- a.Psalm 4:4 Or are angry
** ** ** ** **
This is another Psalm where, surface level observation, I am so glad that I currently am not being stalked by an enemy. Life has its problems and I wish I could change a large number of factors, but no one trying to actively destroy me is nice. I have been there and would not recommend it as a hobby.
So, I am not planning on going super deep with textual criticism, but I think it is worth defining the term selah, as it appears numerous times within the Psalms.
Selah is a Hebrew term which calls for the reader/listener to pause and reflect during this song.
The honesty of the writing ha always appealed to me as a Christian and philosopher. The writer is perfectly okay with demanding a response from God. That emotional honesty was something I rarely saw as a teenager at church, but something I have tried to carry over in my prayers.
I think my favorite insult is when an ex called me a Christian mystic because of how I would be try to be honest in my prayers. People trying to hider their emotions while praying has always confused me. Evangelical culture seems to have this emotional blockage, this fear of seeing and being seen.
If someone believes God to be all knowing, every present, and all powerful... it seems silly to try and pretend God doesn't know us, he does, and then he invites us to know him.
As absurd as it seems, this emotional honesty is scandalous within certain faith traditions....
There use of pauses to breath is brilliant. Honest emotions, strong emotions, and then telling to reader to STOP, breath, pause, feel, but do not let your extreme emotions drive and control you. Emotions, feeling, and being honest are important, but it's important to not let emotions be our sole driving force.

"The Lord Has Set Apart The Godly Man" -- Bill Boyd
“The Lord Has Set Apart The Godly Man” — Bill Boyd
In the fourth Psalm David said, “The Lord hath set apart him that is godly for himself” (Ps. 4:3).  It was good for David to remember that, for David was distress by his enemies. He said, “O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing?” (Ps. 4:2). “Leasing” is an old word for “falsehood.” Their falsehood had made David angry, but…

Psalm 4
To the chief Musician on Neginoth, a Psalm of David.
1 Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer. 2 O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing? Selah. 3 But know that the Lord hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the Lord will hear when I call unto him. 4 Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah. 5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the Lord. 6 There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. 7 Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased. 8 I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.
