"Fearful and suspicious, Lowe fretted day and night about the dishonor he would suffer if the most important prisoner in the history of the world escaped on his watch. He placed more and more insulting restrictions on his prisoner.
Napoleon soon grew to despise his captor and, for his personal amusement, decided to wage another war, this time on Governor Lowe. When Lowe ordered his men to do a visual check on Napoleon twice a day, the emperor refused to leave his rooms. He drew the blinds whenever he saw a red uniform in the garden. When working in his garden, Napoleon instructed his servants to wear clothing identical to his own, including a huge floppy hat so Lowe’s soldiers had no idea which one, if any, was the prisoner.
He had his priest, a man of Napoleon’s physique, wear his coat and hat and sit with his back to the window, then turn around grinning to show the officer creeping through the garden that he wasn’t Napoleon."
The Royal Art of Poison- Filthy Palaces, Fatal Cosmetics, Deadly Medicine, and Murder Most Foul - Eleanor Herman
I hate french people but napoleon bonaparte was funny for this.

"The New York City Council voted to ban most uses of solitary confinement in city jails Wednesday [December 20, 2023], passing the measure with enough votes to override a veto from Mayor Eric Adams.
The measure would ban the use of solitary confinement beyond four hours and during certain emergencies. That four hour period would be for "de-escalation" in situations where a detainee has caused someone else physical harm or risks doing so. The resolution would also require the city's jails to allow every person detained to spend at least 14 hours outside of their cells each day.
The bill, which had 38 co-sponsors, was passed 39 to 7. It will now go to the mayor, who can sign the bill or veto it within 30 days. If Mayor Adams vetoes the bill, it will get sent back to the council, which can override the veto with a vote from two-thirds of the members. The 39 votes for the bill today make up 76% of the 51-member council. At a press conference ahead of the vote today [December 20, 2023], Council speaker Adrienne Adams indicated the council would seek [a veto] override if necessary.
For his part, Mayor Adams has signaled he is indeed considering vetoing the bill...
The United Nations has said solitary confinement can amount to torture, and multiple studies suggest its use can have serious consequences on a person's physical and mental health, including an increased risk of PTSD, dying by suicide, and having high blood pressure.
One 2019 study found people who had spent time in solitary confinement in prison were more likely to die in the first year after their release than people who had not spent time in solitary confinement. They were especially likely to die from suicide, homicide and opioid overdose.
Black and Hispanic men have been found to be overrepresented among those placed in solitary confinement – as have gay, lesbian and bisexual people.
The resolution in New York comes amid scrutiny over deaths in the jail complex on Rikers Island. Last month, the federal government joined efforts to wrest control of the facility from the mayor, and give it to an outside authority.
In August 2021, 25-year-old Brandon Rodriguez died while in solitary confinement at Rikers. He had been in pre-trial detention at the jail for less than a week. His mother, Tamara Carter, says his death was ruled a suicide and that he was in a mental health crisis at the time of his confinement.
"I know for Brandon, he should have been put in the infirmary. He should have been seeing a psychiatrist. He should have been being watched," she said.
She says the passage of the bill feels like a form of justice for her.
"Brandon wasn't nothing. He was my son. He was an uncle. A brother. A grandson. And he's very, very missed," she told NPR. "I couldn't save my son. But if I joined this fight, maybe I could save somebody else's son." ...
New York City is not the first U.S. city to limit the use of solitary confinement in its jails, though it is the largest. In 2021, voters in Pennsylvania's Allegheny County, which includes Pittsburgh, passed a measure to restrict solitary confinement except in cases of lockdowns and emergencies. The sheriff in Illinois' Cook County, which includes Chicago, has said the Cook County jail – one of the country's largest – has also stopped using solitary confinement...
Naila Awan, the interim co-director of policy at the New York Civil Liberties Union, says that New York making this change could have larger influence across the country.
"As folks look at what New York has done, other larger jails that are not quite the size of Rikers will be able to say, 'If New York City is able to do this, then we too can implement similar programs here, that it's within our capacity and capabilities," Awan says. "And to the extent that we are able to get this implemented and folks see the success, I think we could see a real shift in the way that individuals are treated behind bars.""

Rundown of the current protests, rioting and state crackdown that have erupted in France over the police murder of a 17 year old brown boy.
I've seen way too many Europeans on here insisting ACAB is just a USAmerican thing. It's really important y'all know that it isn't. Cops as an institution is fundamentally fascist, and in the Global North, white supremacist.

but..but do we meet alt bf sukuna in the future again
I was justtttt thinking really hard about this anon…. head in hands cw: slightly toxic
Years later you find out that Sukuna became a lawyer, of all things. You’d think he gain a sense of justice and changed into a better man that helps others….. ha.
If anything, he now legally gets to have that twisted feeling of control that he likes over people and get payed for it. He still flaunts those ugly bits of him proudly, in a fitted and dark three piece suit worth someone’s rent instead of a leather jacket. The new lifestyle fits him well, annoying so.
It’s actually so unnerving to see him this way when you work in a coffee shop while he drives a bmw. Clean cut and snobbish in a way which money does to people. But you knew better than chucking off that smugness to being rich because Sukuna has always been this way. He still wore his hair up, still had that sharp glare that domineers and makes people flinch instinctively, black ink of his tattoos peeking just above his white button down’s collar and under the cuffs of his suit’s sleeves. Sukuna always remains himself no matter how much he changes. He has always been the one to outgrow and thrive whatever environment he’s in. Always above everyone in every way.
You figured he outgrew you too. Just another ex from his youth, forgotten in his list of past lovers. But you’re shocked that he asks you out for dinner, something swirling in your chest when you recognize that his way of asking was just a courtesy. He already knew the answer.
“What makes you think I’ll have dinner with you?” You manage to bite back, defiant. The breakup had not been pretty, you remember yelling that you never wanted to see him again like it was yesterday.
Rather Sukuna remembers it too or not, he chooses to gloss over it, putting a too big and too generous tip in the tip jar that feels condescending coming from him.
“Since when have you ever said no to me?” He shots back retorically- and when his eyes flicker lower, the flimsy and overworn necklace suddenly weighs too heavy on your collarbone. “Thought we did everything together. You’ve always been my girl.”
Your face burns, in anger, in shame, in guilt- as he slides a card on the counter and takes his coffee, grinning wider because all you can do is glare at him with those pretty eyes that he kept fresh in his thoughts.
With nothing left for you to say, Sukuna takes his leave with parting words over his shoulder. “Text me your address. I’ll pick you up at 8.”
You have half a mind to rip his business card to shreds, because it all feels the same as it did years ago- but you take up his offer for that same reason, because it seems like you stayed the same too.

🖤 Our current drug laws are unjust and nonsensical – and disproportionately harm Black and brown communities. 🕷️🕸️🖤
Digital illustration of a young witch with brown skin and pink hair wearing a green cape and hat. Next to her is an owl sitting on a book along with an open spell book. There is a variety of objects scattered on the table in front of her including a cauldron, a bag of soil and candles. Text reads, ‘to be blunt, drug criminalization is racist.’

curtain call
The Mechanisms are uncharacteristically quiet as they walk off the stage. Even Jonny doesn’t know what to say as the remaining eight space pirates file into the dressing room of the venue they booked for their last ever show on Earth.
The first one to break the silence is the Toy Soldier who sniffles, gasps tremulously, and then wails, “Is all that really going to happen? With the—the black holes and the bar fights and the octokittens and everything?”
Jonny stifles a groan. This is exactly why he’d locked it out in the first place. What’s going to happen is what’s going to happen, and they all might as well accept it.
To make matters worse, the Toy Soldier’s sniffling has set off some of the more sensitive Mechanisms. Ivy pats it on the shoulder with a forlorn look, eyes glassy with unshed tears, and Marius’ fragile expression suggests that if Ivy starts crying, he’ll follow suit.
Tim has his arm around Ashes’ waist, as if worried they might disappear, and though his metal eyes betray no sadness, the firm set of his mouth worries Jonny more than anything else.
“The odds of us changing the future now that it’s been written are over three hundred million to one,” Ivy says sadly. “It’s statistically impossible that we will live forever.”
“B-b-but we have so many more songs left to sing!” the Toy Soldier weeps. “Tales to tell! Wars to wage!”
“And we will,” Jonny says shortly. “None of us are instantly about to keel over, are we?”
“N-no?” the Toy Soldier says.
“Everyone seems in decent health to me,” Marius says quietly. He holds Ivy’s hand in both of his.
“So don’t worry about it,” Jonny says.
“That’s easy for you to say,” Marius says. “You’re not dying for another millennia. I could get eaten by octokittens tomorrow.”
Jonny’s stomach twists, and he wrenches his mouth open to retort, but someone interrupts him.
“No,” Raphaella says sharply. “You will not. We know for a fact that we each die alone. I’m not letting you out of my sight, and you’re certainly not going to check on the octokittens any time soon. I’m planning to have Ivy feed them when we arrive back at the ship.”
“It’s not the same now that I know they eat Marius,” Ivy sniffles.
Marius’s expression shatters. “Don’t hold it against them, Ivy! They’re just hungry! They can’t help it! Don’t be sad!” he pleads.
Jonny feels sick as Ivy starts to cry harder, expounding on the hunting habits of felines, which only makes Marius more upset. He throws himself into a chair and starts taking his makeup off with a wet wipe, trying and failing to ignore them as Raphaella attempts to comfort them both.
“You’re being awfully callous about all this,” Tim says, still with one arm around a stony-faced Ashes. Brian and the Toy Soldier have joined the fray, and Brian’s platitudes about everything coming to an end in time are almost as unhelpful as the Toy Soldier’s weeping and wailing.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Jonny snaps.
“Well, you could at least pretend to be sad like the rest of us,” Tim says. “I know you’re all excited to die, but that doesn’t mean the rest of us are.”
“God damn it, Tim,” Jonny snaps, throwing the wet wipe on the floor. “You think I’m not sad?”
“You’re not acting like it,” Tim replies. “Marius had a point. You’ve got a run-up and a death you’re looking forward to. Ashes here could go at any time.”
“Hey, babe, don’t bring me into this,” Ashes mumbles.
“Am I wrong?” Tim says.
“Yeah, you fucking are wrong!” Jonny shouts. “You think I want to die alone in some backwater asteroid bar centuries after the rest of you are gone? Yeah, I’m excited to die, but that doesn’t mean I want to watch the rest of you disappear first!”
The rest of the dressing room falls quiet, and Jonny realizes belatedly that he was shouting. Worse, he feels tears in his eyes, and he scrubs at them angrily, smearing the remains of his face paint.
“Oh,” Gunpowder Tim says. “I guess I didn’t think about that.”
“You choose how you go out,” Jonny says. “I have to wait until it finally decides to fucking stick. You know how many times I’ve been stabbed in the heart? I could go start a barfight on an asteroid tomorrow, but I guarantee it won’t stick.”
“All the same,” Tim says quietly. “I’d prefer you didn’t risk it.”
“And I’d prefer you wore your fucking seatbelt, but we don’t get to choose, now do we?” Jonny says.
Tim flinches, and Ashes frowns at Jonny who takes a deep, shuddering breath.
“I—I mean. I don’t want you to die either,” he says. “But we have to die s-sooner or later. And I don’t want to waste whatever time we have left crying about it.”
Despite this, tears are dripping from his eyes as he speaks, flowing faster than he can scrub them away. No one says another for a long moment, but he feels the eyes of several of his crewmates on him.
“C’mere, you mean ol’ bastard,” Ashes says. They spread the arm not curled around Tim’s waist and gesture for him to approach.
“What?” Jonny says, standing up and shuffling closer.
Ashes crushes him to their chest in a one-armed hug, and Jonny breaks and grabs both Ashes and Tim as best he can. Before he can recover, he feels someone else wrap their arms around him from behind, and before he can protest, he’s at the center of a tangled mass of weeping space pirates—colloquially known as a group hug.
It’s awkward with so much metal and wood and weapons, but Jonny can’t even pretend to be annoyed by it. He’s too focused on not breaking down into sobs. He’ll be damned if he lets his crew see him cry anymore than they already have.
“I love you all very much,” the Toy Soldier says happily. “Best space pirate crew ever.”
Jonny rolls his eyes and sobs silently. Hopefully, buried as he is in a mass of bodies, no one will notice.
“Well, now that that’s been dealt with,” DrumBot Brian says, “I would like to return to the Aurora. I am concerned our parking pass has expired.”
Jonny sighs. “Fine, but you stay away from the damn airlock.”
“Your concern is touching and noted,” says the DrumBot.
The Mechanisms disperse and hurriedly gather up their things. Jonny lovingly coils up his microphone and tucks it safely away, and the band of space pirates begin to make their way back to the Aurora and off to destinations unknown.
